Asante Kotoko legend Joe Debrah passes on

Asante Kotoko SC legend and ex-Ghana international Joe Debrah has passed away aged 52 following a short ailment.

Debrah, who was the poster boy for the Porcupine Warriors in the 1990s, succumbed to death on Friday, October 27, 2023.

Debrah was undoubtedly one of the best performers of the local game in the early and mid-parts of the 1990’s, due to his brilliant ball control skills and amazing goal scoring instincts.

But a knee injury in the late 90s hindered his progress and subsequently saw him moved from Kotoko to Goldfields in 1997.

He donned the famous red shirt from 1989 to 1997 and also played for Ivorian giants Africa Sports.

GFA wins substantive CAS case against King Faisal FC, King Faisal ordered to pay cost of CHF4,000 to GFA

The Court of Arbitration for Sports has dismissed King Faisal FC’s appeal filed against the decision of the Appeals Committee of Ghana Football Association (GFA).

In a decision announced on Friday, October 27, 2023 to both parties, CAS confirmed the decision of the Appeals Committee of the GFA in the case of King Faisal FC vrs Tamale City FC.

According to the CAS decision, the costs of arbitration to be determined and served separately to the Parties by the CAS Court Office shall be borne entirely by Kumasi Faisal FC.

King Faisal FC has already paid a fee of CHF45,000 to CAS at the institution of the case.

The decision also stated that King Faisal FC shall bear its own costs and is ordered to pay to the GFA the total amount of CHF 4,000 (four thousand Swiss Francs) as a contribution towards the GFA’s legal fees and other expenses incurred in connection with the arbitration proceedings.

The GFA was represented at the arbitration proceedings by Naa Ofofoley Nortey (Esq) with support from General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo (Esq), while King Faisal FC was represented by Lawyer John Kwame Quayson.

King Faisal are currently playing in the Division One League Zone 2 after suffering relegation after the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League season.

Goldfields invest $13 million in construction of TNA Stadium

Gold Fields Ghana Foundation has reported that it has invested $13 million in the construction of the TNA Stadium, which is poised to become the new home ground for Medeama SC.

This state-of-the-art stadium is designed to accommodate 10,400 spectators.

According to the company, “The Foundation has so far invested over US$13 million dollars in the stadium, out of a budgeted US$16M, and this has proven to be one of the high-cost ticket items it has funded besides the Tarkwa to Damang asphalted road.”

In addition to the stadium investment, Gold Fields Ghana has also allocated $100,000 to support Medeama in their advertising efforts, including jersey and bus branding, for the period of 2023/2024.

The stadium will be completed in March 2024. Initially, Ghanaian champions Medeama had anticipated that the stadium would be ready in November to host their CAF Champions League group games.

However, with the stadium set to be completed next year, the club have opted to use the Cape Coast Stadium. Medeama are scheduled to face Al Ahly, CR Belouizdad, and Yanga FC in their first-ever group stage appearance.

Bernhard Lippert steps down as Ghana FA technical director

Reports suggest that German national Bernhard Lippert has stepped down from his role as the technical director of the Ghana Football Association.

The reason for his abrupt departure has not been disclosed. Lippert was initially appointed to the role in 2020 for a two-year period, and despite serving beyond this term, no official extension was announced.

Lippert’s appointment came three years ago when he succeeded the veteran Ghanaian coach Oti Akenteng. As technical director, he was responsible for creating guidelines, strategies, and policies aimed at the training and technical development of football coaches in Ghana.

His duties also included providing counsel to the Executive Council on coaching and technical development matters while supervising national football team coaches.

During his tenure, questions were raised about Lippert’s performance, and his resignation appears to have been met with enthusiasm by some. The German national’s departure leaves a vacant position in the Ghana Football Association’s technical leadership.

Unbeaten Bofoakwa Tano host strugglers Accra Lions

Bofoakwa Tano – one of the Unbeaten sides in the betPawa Premier League will square off with Accra Lions on Matchday 7 at the Sunyani Coronation Park Friday. 

Accra Lions – winless in their last three games in the betPawa Premier League have conceded 6 goals in their last two games and lost three consecutive times against Asante Kotoko, Accra Great Olympics and Real Tamale United.

Bofoakwa Tano who were off to a brilliant start to the season after winning their first two games have drawn their last three games but have yet to lose a game after six Matchdays. 

The Sunyani based club are unbeaten at home following with two wins and one draw against Real Tamale United, Hearts of Oak and Bibiani Gold Stars.

Accra Lions are winless on the road this season having drawn 2-2 against Medeama SC in Tarkwa, 1-1 against BerekumChelsea and lost 3-0 to Accra Great Olympics.

Bofoakwa Tano have won two of their last five games in the league and sit 4th in the table with 10 points whiles Accra Lions occupy the 18th spot with 5 points after winning one, drawing one and losing 3 games in their last five matches. 

Saaka Dauda who has netted 2 goals at home for Bofoakwa Tano will be available for selection with Benjamin York, Blessing Dana, Bright Kyereh, Andrews Kwadwo Appau, Clement Ansah and Najib Fuseini Ibrahim all aiming to start for Bofoakwa Tano.

Accra Lions side have the likes of Baba Salifu Apiiga, Bernald Kesse, David Oduro, Remember Adomako Boateng, Daniel Kwame Awuni and Shawkan- Hunalf Mohammed available to start.

The Ghana Football Association has announced the full fixtures for this weekend’s MTN FA Cup Preliminary round games.

The games are scheduled to begin from Friday, October 27, 2023 to Monday, October 30, 2023.

Winners from the preliminary round of the competition will advance to the Round of 64 where they will join winners Dreams FC and the other Premier League Clubs.

      Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum finally reveals Kotoko’s target for the first round of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League

      Asante Kotoko coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has revealed that his side’s target is to be at the top of the league after the first round of the 2023–24 Ghana Premier League.

      The Ghanaian giants have had a difficult start to the season after failing to win a single game in their first three games against Heart of Lions, GoldStars, and Karela United, respectively.

      The record Premier League champions, however,  secured their first win on match-day 4 in a 1-0 victory against Accra Lions before picking up a second consecutive win over Aduana FC in Kumasi and a draw against Nations FC over the weekend.

      They currently have 9 points out of a possible 18 after six rounds of matches in the Ghanaian top-flight.

      However, the Porcupine Warriors boss expresses confidence in their chances of getting to the top of the log when the first round comes to a close, despite not being happy with losing half of the points after six games.

      “I think as far as point accumulation is concerned, myself and the players are not happy because, if you look at it, it means we have given half of the points away. Looking at the games we have played and the creativity we have shown in front of goal, we shouldn’t be having 9 points,” Ogum told the club’s media.

      “It is a learning curve, and looking at the remaining games, I think we should be able to win all these games and ensure that we will be at the top, where Kotoko is always known to be, and we must prove that we are the best.”

      Kotoko will battle Bechem United in their next Premier League game at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday at 3 p.m.

      Dan Quaye blasts Hearts of Oak for signing players without a coach

      Former defender for Ghana and Hearts Of Oak, Daniel Quaye has voiced his displeasure with Hearts of Oak’s administration, critiquing the team’s choice to sign players for the 2023–2024 Ghana Premier League season prior to selecting a coach.

      Ten players had already signed contracts with Hearts of Oak for the season when Martin Koopman was named coach.

      Quaye claims that the team’s performance in the Ghana Premier League has fallen short of expectations and that the team’s performance is being adversely affected by its player recruitment strategy.

      Quaye emphasized the unusual nature of the move and questioned the appropriateness of signing players before a coach was appointed.

      “Who signs players without a coach? Where will this happen in the world if not Hearts of Oak? Elsewhere even when they are signing players without a coach, they have scouts who have monitored players for a long time but at Hearts of Oak the Board with their selfish interests do all these transfers without a technical person,” he said on Rainbow Radio.

      “They do things anyhow in the club and when the experienced players talk, they force them out. We all know why Awako was sacked from the club. He was sacked because if things are not going well and he speaks, then there is a problem.”

      “There is no proper leadership in the club. The same thing happened to Sulley Muntari because they will not accept any contributions he brought on board considering his experience in the game,” Dan Quaye added.
