2020-21 GPL: Preview: Medeama face Aduana Stars at home Saturday

Medeama SC will on Saturday, lock horns with former Champions Aduana Stars in a match day 8 fixture at the Akoon park in Tarkwa.

The mauves and yellows have failed to replicate the form they displayed in last seasons League winning only once this term. They have drawn all three home games and lost twice on the road to Dreams FC and WAFA.

Agyenim Boateng’s solitary strike in Cape Coast earned them their first and only win of the season thus far as they won 1-0 against Ebusua Dwarfs.

Coach Samuel Boadu’s side have rich experience with the likes of Rashid Nortey, Justice Blay, Eric Kwakwa, Akwasi Donsu and Agyenim Boateng in their fold but they have yet to show that class in this seasons League.

They leaked five goals against WAFA on Sunday, their heaviest defeat in history and not even their impressive fight back could earn them a point at the Red Bull arena at Sogakope. Medeama SC play without fear, they have flair and tenacity going forward. But wastefulness is the reason for their woes. Their three outings at home have been nothing but poor as they have scored two and conceded two.

Pressure continues to mount on Coach Samuel Boadu and his players as the fight for three points rambles on. On Sunday, they have a test against Aduana Stars, one of the experienced sides in the Premier League. The Ogya lads, came from a goal down to record a 2-1 win against Great Olympics on Sunday at Dormaa to continue their four-game unbeaten run.

The former League champions have not lost a game since losing 1-0 to Elmina Sharks at the Nduom stadium. Talisman Yahaya Mohammed is gradually picking up the pieces as he continues to impress for his side.

Bright Adjei, Samuel Bio, Justice Anane and Farouk Adams have bagged experience over the years and could prove a tough customer for the home side. Aduana stars sit in 7thplace with 10 points, winning two and drawing four in the process.

Matches between the two sides is always fierce as both teams consistently compete for the League title. Yahaya Mohammed scored the winning goal at the Dormaa park last season when they met in the cancelled 2019/2020 campaign.

A win for Medeama SC could turn their season around and boost their confidence and belief for the re4st of the matches.

The game will be broadcasted live on StarTimes Adepa channel 247 at 3pm.

Manchester United announce the signing of Ivorian Amad Diallo

Manchester United have now officially announced the signing of youngster Amad Diallo from Atalanta.

Diallo is Manchester United’s first signing in the January transfer window so far.

The Ivorian has signed a contract with Manchester United until June 2025, with the option of another year.

In 2020, Atalanta reached an agreement for Diallo’s transfer on the last day of the summer transfer window.

His work permit, and medical have all now been completed, and he is officially a Manchester United player.

At Atalanta, he played twice for the Serie A club first team earlier in the Italian season.

In his first Manchester United interview, Diallo said: “After waiting for so long, it is a dream come true to become a Manchester United player. I am ambitious and i want to achieve in the game.

“When I spoke to the Coach, I was happy because i joined the right club.

“This is an exciting Manchester United squad with great players, I will now work hard every day to learn and develop my game.

“The coaches are fantastic, we have talked before regularly and they have given me so the advice i need.

“I had all the time to prepare for this transfer, physically and mentally, and I have worked hard to be ready to take this next step to this club.”

Diallo’s United shirt number is yet to be announced by Manchester United.

In November, He played as a substitute in the last 10 minutes of the Serie A match against Hellas Verona.

Ghanaian winger Emmanuel Boateng completes move to New England Revolution

New England Revolution have announced the signing of Ghanaian winger Emmanuel Boateng ahead of the 2021 Major League Soccer season.

Boateng joins New England for his ninth professional season and sixth MLS campaign after stints with Columbus Crew SC, D.C. United, and the LA Galaxy, in addition to three years in Sweden’s first-tier Allsvenskan with Helsingborgs IF.

The soon-to-be 27-year-old has reunited with Bruce Arena, whom he played under for three-years at Los Angeles Galaxy.

“Ema Boateng is an experienced left-footed attacking player with very good pace. He is comfortable playing on the flanks, which is an area where he can help improve our team.” Revolution Sporting Director and Head Coach Bruce Arena said.

“Ema’s character and professionalism will be welcomed additions to our team, and we look forward to his arrival in Foxborough.”

Boateng played in three games with D.C. United in 2019 before joining Columbus via trade later that season.

He played in 10 league games with Crew SC in 2020, with two additional postseason appearances en route to winning the 2020 MLS Cup.

The three-time African best mingled with the locals of Kawukudi on Thursday during the launch of the Sports retailing shop

Former Ghana captain Abedi Ayew Pele was at the launch of Decathlon Ghana’s shop in Kawukudi in Accra on Thursday.

In an event graced by France’s foreign minister Jean Yves Le Drian as the special guest of honour, Ayew was showered with praise for his numerous roles in football in Ghana and France.

“Ayew has been an excellent footballer and I’m very excited to have met him personally today,” Yves Le Drian said as quoted by AshesGyamera.com.

“I’m more happier because I’ve come to realise that one of his sons lived and played in a city I was the mayor some years back. I thank him for his roles in football in France and Ghana,” he added.

Pele said: “it always feels great to be with kids, especially those in sports.”

Decathlon Sports Firm whose slogan is “Sports for all – All for sports” are the official football retailers for Ghana Football Association and are the ones that brought the Kipsta footballs which are used for Ghana Premier League and Division One League games.

CONFIRMED: Al-Hilal progress ahead of Kotoko after COVID-19 troubles

The Confederation of African Football, CAF have finally confirmed that Sudan side Al Hilal have advanced to the Group Stage of the 2020-21 Champions League at the expense of Asante Kotoko after COVID-19 row.

This comes after the African football governing body, CAF on Thursday, January 7, published the teams that have made it to the Group Stage of the competition.

Kotoko’s CAF Champions League return leg against Al Hilal in was called off on Sunday after the Porcupine Warriors failed to raise the required number of players for the game due to COVID-19 positive cases.

The Ghanaian giants were rocked by positive cases in the team after seven players and four officials tested positive for the virus. Again, the result of one player got missing as the club never received it.

The situation led to the cancellation of the reverse fixture. The decision was made after conversations with medical experts and the health department officials in Sudan.

However, the Porcupine Warriors suspect foul play after the results were released by the Sudanese medical authorities.

The results released showed discrepancies which the Porcupine Warriors are eager to challenge.

According to our sources, the Ghanaian giants are yet to receive any official communique from CAF despite sending an email over 24 hours ago as at the time of this publication.

Hearts Of Oak to miss six key players ahead of Elmina Sharks clash

Hearts of Oak will be missing the services of six key players when they make a trip to Elmina Sharks FC in the 2020-21 ongoing hand Premier League on Sunday.

Sharks will welcome the Phobians to the Nduom Sports Complex in a match-day 8 which promises to be fireworks.

Midfield trio Emmanuel Nettey, Abdul Aziz Nurudeen and Nigerien international Abdoulrahmane Mamane Lawali are out of the trip with respective injuries.

Hearts will also trek without forwards Michelle Sarpong, Kwadwo Obeng Jnr. and Isaac Mensah who are also in the treatment room.

Kosta Papic will, therefore, be counting on youngster Victor Aidoo – who scored his debut goal for Hearts of Oak in their 6-1 thrashing of Bechem United a week ago – as a lead striker.

But Larry Sumaila who did not play in the Bechem game due to injury has resumed training.

Hearts are currently occupying 5th on the 18-club league log after seven matches.

Preview: Winless Legon Cities battles free scoring WAFA Friday

Legon Cities Football Club will on Friday square off against WAFA in a match day eight fixture at the Accra Sports stadium.

Coach Bashir Hayford’s side have yet to win a game in the ongoing League and currently sit at the foot of the table with three points following 3 drawn games against Berekum Chelsea, Medeama SC and Dreams FC.

The Royals, have lost four games in the League but put up an impressive showing against Liberty professionals on Sunday. Against the scientific soccer lads, they were hard done by their profligacy in front of goal in a one nil loss.

The return of Asamoah Gyan has yet to improved their fortunes as the former Ghana captain continues to stay on the sidelines due to injury.

Gyan has featured in only three games and his absence has impacted negatively on their scoring ability as they lack the cutting edge and the experience to punish opponents.

Legon Cities have scored only two goals in the League with both goals coming from spot kicks, meaning they are yet to score in open play.

They recruited Michael Ampadu, Jonah Attuquaye, Mathew Anim Cudjoe and Raphael Ocloo before the start of the season. But these players have yet to sparkle huffing and puffing in games. In defence, they concede easily and give away points cheaply.

Captain Fatau Dauda and his backline have kept only one clean sheet in the League and that needs to improve before Friday’s game against a free scoring WAFA side.

Legon Cities are chasing after their first win of the season to save their campaign. But how they can do that against WAFA remains unknown.

The Academy boys last Sunday scored five goals against an experienced Medeama SC side at the Red Bull arena at Sogakope, their highest score line this season.

They have scored 13 goals and conceded 10 in the ongoing season and currently occupy the third spot in the table with 13 points. Four goal hero Daniel Lomotey will be expected to lead the lines for WAFA against a Legon Cities side that is low in confidence, having picked only two points at home this season.

Goalkeeper Ferdinand Sabi Acquah,Lawrence Agyekum, Forson Amankwah, forward Augustine Boakye and Godwin Agbevor have been outstanding.

They have an impeccable record at home as they remain unbeaten in four home games in the 2020/21 season. But they also boast of an impressive away record losing one, drawing one and winning one in three games.

Last season, Legon Cities beat WAFA 4-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium before the league was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The game is scheduled for 6pm kick off at the Accra Sports stadium.

How Ghanaian players fared in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup: Sey on target, Atta-Agyei and others make group stages

The 2020/2021 CAF Champions League group stage qualifications were concluded on Tuesday and Wednesday whilst the play-off round of the CAF Confederation Cup is also determined.

There were a lot of Ghanaian players who made appearances for their respective clubs as they booked their places for group stage and the play-off respectively.

This season’s CAF Champions League group stage will see Inusah Musah and Isaac Mensah with Angolan giants Petro Atletico.

Godfred Asante, Brefo Mensah, Sebe Baffour Kyei, Ocansey Mandela and Enock Atta Agyei will be present with Guinean champions Horoya AC.

Tanzanian champions Simba SC secured a spot in the group stage and winger Bernard Morrison will be featuring.

CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Daniel Darkwah played full minutes for Enyimba FC when they beat Sudanese champions Al Merrikh SC 2-1 at home on Wednesday.

Farouk Mohammed started for the Nigerian giants but was substituted in the 19th minute following an injury he suffered.

Defender Emmanuel Ampiah was named on the bench for Enyimba as they bowed out of the competition on a 4-2 aggregate.

Former Hearts of Oak defender Inusah Musah saw all 90 minutes for Petro Atletico as they beat Zambian champions Nkana FC 1-0 to make it to the group stages of the competition.

Central defender Richard Ocran enjoyed full throttle of the match for the losing side Nkana on Wednesday.

Horoya AC made it to the group stage of the competition once again after their 1-0 win over Ivorian champions Racing Club Abidjan on Wednesday.

Enock Atta Agyei started for the Guinean giants but was replaced in the 57th minute by Ocansey Mandela due to an injury.

Godfred Asante was introduced in the game in the 68th minute as he replaced Ibrahima Aminata Conde.

CAF CONFEDERATION CUP

Striker Stephen Sey scored again for Namungo SC as they drew 3-3 with Al Hilal Obeid in Sudan on Tuesday to advance to the play-off round of the competition.

Sey has now scored four times in the competition for Namungo.

Stephen Duah also featured for the Tanzanian side as he played all minutes of the game.

Tunisian side US Monastir progressed to the next stage of the competition when they held Al Ahli Tripoli to a goalless draw on Wednesday.

Shafiu Mumuni was handed a start for Monastir who advanced with a 2-0 aggregate scoreline.

Defender Daniel Adoko lasted the entire duration of the match for Zambian side Napsa Stars as they earned a vital 1-1 draw in Mozambique against UD Songo to make it to the next round via away goal advantage.

Nartey Polo was at the heart of defence for Burkina Faso side Salitas FC as they completed a double over Alamal Atbara of Sudan with a 2-0 win on Wednesday to progress to the next stage.

FC San Pedro suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to ASC Jaaraf in Abidjan on Wednesday to bow out of the competition.

Mohammed Saaba Gariba started the game for San Pedro whereas forward Richard Zumah started from bench as they failed to hold onto their first leg 1-0 advantage.

John Antwi who scored the only goal for Pyramids FC when they beat Al Ittihad Tripoli 1-0 in the first leg didn’t feature in the secon leg as they won 3-2 to progress to the play-off round.

I will still play for Black Stars even when at 40 – Jonathan Mensah

Columbus Crew captain, Jonathan Mensah has emphasised that he will still play for the senior national team of Ghana even when called aged 40.

The central defender last played for the Black Stars during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations held in Egypt. Ghana got eliminated at the round of 16 by Tunisia and, since then Mensah has been out of the plans of current gaffer, CK Akonnor.

But he still has hope of returning and will play when called at 40 years.

“My doors are wide open to the national team always. I’m never going to retire from international football.

“I don’t even have the ink in my pen to write and announce a retirement,” Mensah revealed to Angel FM.

“Even if I’m done with club football and needed by Ghana at 40, I will avail myself.

“Even the likes of Roger Milla and Flavio Amado were grown and unattached yet they still played for their national teams.”

The aggressive defender led his side to glory in 2020 when they beat Seattle Sounders to clinch the MLS Cup.

Mensah has played in two Afcon finals and two Fifa World Cup tournaments.

He was part of the Black Satellites squad that won the 2009 Fifa U-20 World Cup in Egypt.

The 2021/2022 Ghana Women’s Premier League is set to commence as each participant gears up for the upcoming season.

The Ghana Women’s Premier League for the past seasons has undergone a sudden revolution of young female players taking the game by storm and this upcoming season has been tipped to be no exception.

1. DORIS BOADUWAA – HASAACAS LADIES

Breaking into a team’s set-up is a pretty tricky thing to do but that’s exactly what Doris did upon her arrival from Nana Afia Ampem ladies.

The lanky forward scored nine (9) goals in 7 appearances for the Green and White side in the annulled 2020 campaign and is expected to take up from where she left off in the previous campaign.

2. MILOT ABENA POKUA – HASAACAS LADIES

Arguably the most prolific striker in the 2020 Ghana Women’s League campaign, Milot gave out a lot to talk about, netting 10 goals, 10 assists and emerging joint top-scorer with Ophelia Serwaa Amponsah.

The Black Princesses forward has been tipped to steer Hasaacas Ladies to the summit of the league with her partnership with Doris Boaduwaa.

3. ABIGAIL TAWIAH – BERRY LADIES

The new Black Queens shot-stopper stole the headlines in the previous campaign with some remarkable saves for her side in the Southern sector of the women’s league.

Following Abigail’s heroic saves in the previous season, she was handed a call up into the senior national women team and has been likened to former Black Queens great goalkeeper, Memunatu Sulemana.

4. RAHAMA JAFAR – NORTHERN LADIES

The in-form Black Princesses winger is expected to capitalise on last season’s form to gear her side to the top in this year’s competition.

Her versatility on both wings and ability to wriggle away from defenders before firing home resulted in six goals in the Northern zone. Rahama is the glue that holds things together, although she doesn’t score goals for fun like others, but gets the best out of each one of her teammates.

5. OPHELIA SERWAA AMPONSAH – AMPEM DARKOA LADIES

Ophelia surprisingly stepped into the gap following the departure of Princella Adubea at Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC as her previous season saw her warm the bench mostly due to the presence of the latter.
Notwithstanding, she got her name on all lips of every Ghanaian female football loving fan with her superb and outstanding performances in last season’s campaign, netting the first haul (4 goals) of the season on match-day.

Again, she recorded a hat-trick on match-day 5, paving the way for a call-up into the national U-17 team, the Black Maidens. Ophelia has been impressive at the international level, bagging 5 goals in the FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup qualifier against Liberia.

6. BARIKISU ABDUL-RAHMAN – PEARL PIA LADIES

Undoubtedly, an experienced and incredible talent gracing the Ghana Women’s Premier League for the fourth continuous season for Pearl Pia Ladies in the Northern Zone. She is one of the most disciplined and reliable players for her side and has played every single minute for Pearl Pia Ladies in last season’s campaign.
