Caf CC: Kotoko name 21-man squad for ES Sétif showdown

Asante Kotoko Coach, Johnson Smith has named a 21-man squad for their CAF Confederation Cup final play-off first leg tie against Algerian giants, E.S Sétif.

The two sides battle in a two-legged encounter for a slot in the group stage.

The Porcupines arrived in Accra on Friday, February 12, 2021, and trained at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday ahead of the crucial game on Sunday.

Sétif on the other hand, arrived in Ghana on Friday afternoon with a chatered flight.

Coach Johnson Smith’s side includes enterprising forward Kwame Opoku, Fabio Gama and Felix Annan – who has returned from an injury.

Kwame Adom Frimpong, who missed the club’s recent Premier League games due to injury make a return to the team for the all-important clash.

Augustine Okrah also makes the squad for the first time this season in Africa after returning from Morocco.

Below is a full list of Johnson Smith’s squad for the game:

Goalkeepers: Kwame Baah, Felix Annan, Razak Abalora.

Defenders: Christopher Nettey, Samuel Frimpong, Ibrahim Imoro, Abdul Ganiu, Yusif Mubarik, Habib Mohammed, Andrews Appau, Wahab Adams.

Midfielders: Emmanuel Sarkodie, Adom Frimpong, Godfred Asiamah, Emmanuel Gyamfi, Mudasiru Salifu, Fabio Gama, Latif Anabila, Augustine Okrah

Karim Zito names 26-man squad for U-20 Afcon tournament

The Ghana U-20 male team have departed to Mauritania for the 2021 CAF U20 African Cup of Nations.

The tournament is taking place from February 14- March 6.

A delegation made up of 26 players, 9 technical team officials and the management team left Accra on Saturday to Nouadhibou where Ghana will be based.

Ghana’s Black Satellites are in Group C where they are pitched against Morocco, Tanzania and The Gambia.

Coach Karim Zito’s side will face off with Tanzania in their opening match on Tuesday February 16 before squaring off with Morocco and Gambia in subsequent group matches.

U-20 Afcon: Black Satellites leave Ghana for Mauritania today

Ghana Under-20 male team, Black Satellites will depart Accra for Mauritania today, Saturday, February 13, 2021, for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations which kicks off this weekend.

Coach Karim Zito’s side has been camping for almost a month for the African youth football tournament, playing several friendly games.

Ghana qualified for the tournament after clinching the WAFU Zone B U-20 championship in December 2020 in Benin.

Ghana Football Association President, Kurt Okraku at the Airforce to see of the Black Satellites as they depart for the tournament today.

The Black Satellites are housed in Group C alongside Tanzania, Morocco as well as Gambia.

Ghana will open their tournament against Tanzania on Tuesday 16 February, 2021 at the Stade Municipal de Nouadhibou.

Legon Cities FC sign highly-rated forward Richmond Antwi

Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities FC, have secured the services of a new striker Richmond Antwi.

The highly-rated attacker joins the Royals on a three-year deal.

The 20-year-old forward had been unattached before joining the Royals after deciding against extending his stay with Sudanese side Al-Merrikh SC.

He was the top scorer of the Sudanese Premier League in 2018/2019 where he netted 19 goals for Al Khartoum Al Watani.

Legon Cities sit 13th position on the Ghana Premier League log with 14 points after match-day 13.

Bashir Hayford’s side will play King Faisal FC in the match-day 14 of the Ghana Premier League on Monday, February 15, 2021.

Diawisie Taylor named GPL Player of the Month for January

Karela United attacker Diawisie Taylor  has been adjudged the Premier League NASCO Player of the Month for January.

Taylor beat off competition from Great Olympics’ Maxwell Abbey, Daniel Lomotey of WAFA and James Bissue’s of Elmina Sharks.

Taylor scored his 9th goal of the season in the epic clash between his side Karela FC and Medeama SC at the Anyinase CAM park on Day 11 of the season.

In the month of January, Taylor scored a total of five goals with a brace in the game against Berekum Chelsea and a goal each against Elmina Sharks and Medeama.

He also assisted his team mates twice in the month as he won one MVP award.

For his award, Diawisie Taylor will receive NASCO Television and a personalized trophy from the award sponsors, Electroland Ghana Limited(NASCO).

Karela United coach Evans Adotey wins GPL Coach of the Month award for January

Augustine Evans Adotey of Karela United FC has been named the NASCO coach of the month for January.

As Head Coach of the Pride and Passion, Coach Adotey lead Karela FC to three wins in January. All three wins were secured at the Anyinase CAM park.

The team also drew away to Great Olympics at the Accra Sports Stadium giving them a total of 10 points in January.

At the time of his nomination, Karela United was on top of the Ghana Premier League table.

‘Unhappy’ Kosta Papic considering quitting Hearts Of Oak

Accra Hearts Of Oak head coach, Kosta Papic could be on his way out of the club following a row with the hierarchy of the club, according to journalist Saddick Adams.

Snippets of information gathered indicate that events at a mini-board meeting held on Thursday didn’t end well. As a result, the 60-year-old Serbian gaffer is not happy with the Board of Directors of the club.

The report further indicated that Papic has instructed his camp to draft a resignation letter by Monday if the situation remains the same.

His resignation will be a big blow to the Ghanaian giants following the departure of the assistant trainer, Joseph Asare Bediako last week.

Kosta Papic rejoined the Phobians in December last year after a stint with the club in 2009 where he left mid-season.

He is believed to be returning to South Africa where he had stints with Maritzburg United, Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Young Africans SC, Chippa United, Black Leopards and Polokwane City if he does not meet his expectations.

Papic has also had spells with Lobi Stars, Enyimba FC, Enugu Rangers, all in Nigeria.

Caf CC: ES Sétif cannot stop us from progressing to the group stage – Felix Annan

Asante Kotoko SC captain Felix Annan is optimistic that his side will make it to the group stage of the Caf Confederation Cup as they battle ES Sétif in the play-off round.

The Porcupine Warriors will play as hosts to the Algerian giants in the first leg of the tricky duel on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Annan insists their target is to book a place for the group stage of the competition and Setif cannot be an impediment.

“No way. ES Setif cannot stop us from progressing. Our target is to make it to the group stages and we are going for that,” he told GNA Sports.

However, the goalkeeper admitted their Algerian opponents are a strong side but remain optimistic his side is equally strong to advance.

“Qualification to the next stage is our target. Setif is a strong team and we are also strong. We are ready and focused to meet them and we are going all out.”

The game is scheduled to kickoff at 15:00 GMT.

It will be telecast live on Oyerepa TV, GTVSports + and CEEK.

The second leg is scheduled for next week in Setif.

Hearts defender Mohammed Alhassan earns Black Stars call-up for Afcon qualifiers

Hearts Of Oak defender Mohammed Alhassan has been named in Black Stars’ squad for Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Hearts centre-back was named among 32 home-based players announced by Ghana coach C.K. Akonnor to Black Stars for next month’s doubleheader against South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe.

Alhassan – the only Hearts Of Oak player in the squad – has been Kosta Papic’s first-choice centre- back for most of Hearts games in the ongoing Ghana Premier League.

Some foreign-based players will join the home-based players later to continue the preparations for the two games in March.

6 Asante Kotoko players earn Black Stars call-up

Six Asante Kotoko players have received an invitation to the senior national team of Ghana, Black Stars for their next month African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier trip to South Africa and the home game against Sao Tome and Principe.

Following series of scouting exercise conducted by the Black Stars coach, C.K. Akonnor and Technical Director of the Ghana FA, Mr Bernhard Lippert, the players are seen as having exhibited high-quality football knowledge and technique to play at the highest level.

The players include goalkeeper Razak Abalora, defenders Abdul Ganiu, Imoro Ibrahim, Christopher Nettey and Mubarik Yusif and striker Kwame Opoku are part of the list to make Coach Charles Akonnor’s team for the doubleheader games.

The six players are joined by other local-based players such as Joseph Addo of Aduana Stars, Bawa Lawd Martey of Elmina Sharks, Eric Ofori Antwi, Olympics defender Karuna Jamal Deen, Konadu Yiadom of WAFA, Mohammed Alhassan of Hearts of Oak Kwadwo Amoako of Ashantigold, Akoumah Dennis Korsah of Ebusua Dwarfs.

Others are Rashid Nortey and Justice Blay of Medeama, Salifu Moro of Bechem United, Michelle Otou of Great Olympics, Ebusua Dwarf’s George Asamoah and Ben Acquah, Yaw Arnol of Ashgold and Salifu Ibrahim of Eleven Wonders.

Maxwell Abbey and Gladson Awako were also not left out of the squad, Augustine Boakye of WAFA, Michael Agbekornu and Joseph Esso of Dreams FC, Kwame Peprah of King Faisal, Karela United forward Diawisie Taylor, Andy Kumi Francis of lower tier-side UniStar Academy, Etti Evans of Accra Lions and Welbeck Takyi of Tano Bofoakwa.

They are expected to form the core of the Black Stars squad to prepare for the upcoming assignments sith the AFCON qualifiers on top of the agenda.

The three players have played key roles in getting Asante Kotoko to the top of the Ghana Premier league table, having kept an unbeaten away record so far.

Ghana will face South Africa on March 22, 2021, before facing off Sao Tome and Principe before the month ends.
