Ex-Kotoko defender Eric Donkor joins King Faisal

Experienced defender, Eric Donkor has sealed a short-term move to Kumasi-based King Faisal ahead of the start of the second round of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League.

The 28-year-old left-back has been without a club since leaving AshantiGold following the expiration of his two-year deal in September last year.

Donkor has been training with the side for some time now, and after weeks of negotiations, he has penned down a deal with the relegation-threatened club – which will see him in the club until the end of the 2020/21 season in July.

He returns to Kumasi after leaving city rivals Asante Kotoko in May 2018.

Eric Donkor joins former Kotoko defender, Atta Kusi, Paul Aidoo and Seidu Salifu who have joined the club ahead of the start of the second round of the season.

Much is expected of them to aid Faisal’s survival in the League

Embassy of Japan outdoors Ebusua Dwarfs’ Japanese striker Jindo Morishita

His Excellency the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana Tsutomu Himeno officially welcomed their Japanese striker Jindo Morishita to the Ghana Premier League where he would be playing his trade for cape Coast Ebusua Dwarfs for the rest of the season.

The short ceremony saw former GFA boss and Dwarfs bankroller Nana Sam Brew Butler, officials of Cenpower, and Samuel Anim Addo, a representative of the Ghana Football Association in attendance.

In his short remarks, the physically fit Japanese forward promised to do his best to support Dwarfs to rise on the league sheet.

“I am not new to Ghana and I respect the Ghanaian culture. I like Ghanaian food very much especially fufu.” He stressed.

The 25-year-old forward expressed his appreciation to the Japanese Ambassador and the bankroller of Ebusua Dwarfs for their guidance and support.

Nana Sam Brew Butler thanked the media for patronising the ceremony and expatiated a bit on the relationship between Cenpower and Ebusua Dwarfs.

He was of the positive opinion that the partnership would go a long way to benefit the two.

The Japanese Embassy and the Japanese community have been very supportive of Japanese athletes who visit the country for diverse endeavours.

The bond of friendship between Japan and Ghana is greatly noticed in all areas of sports, economy, Health and trade.

AFCON qualifiers: The Black Satellites players who should get Black Stars call-ups

Ghana has over the years failed to properly transition top prospects through the various national teams. On the few occasions the transition has been well managed, especially at the under 20 level, the benefits have been evident in the Black Stars.

Case in point is the 2001 silver medal winning team at Argentina which formed the core of the team which secured Ghana’s first World Cup qualification.

The Black Satellites’ recent triumph in Mauritania has raised questions on whether some players are ready to make the jump to the senior team.

The current under 20 team is loaded with top talents, and with GFA vice president Mark Addo revealing some of the players will be transitioning to the Black Stars, Joy Sports explores which players can realistically make the cut on the basis of ability and availability of position within the team.

Samuel Abbey Ashie Quaye
The left back position has long been a problem since the retirement of Hans Adu Sarpei and the situation offers Samuel Abbey Quaye an opportunity.

The Great Olympics defender impressed as the Satellites won in Mauritania with his calmness and overlapping runs.

The case against Abbey Quaye would be his physique but the exploits of full back Harrison Afful instantly makes nonsense that notion.

Crucially the player has shown consistency over a respectable period to at least earn the opportunity.

Abdul Fatawu Issahaku
If Abbey Quaye can occupy the left back position then the tournament’s best player Abdul Fatawu Issahaku can pick up the position just ahead of him on the left flank.

The position has been occupied by skipper Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew or Mubarak Wakaso in the last couple of years .

All three players have also at various times occupied central positions and with Andre’s preference for the number 10 role and Wakaso utilization as a central midfielder, it leaves the position in need of option.

At 16, Fatawu has shown he has the right foundations to excel on the international stage.

Premier League Referees and Assistant referees train in Prampram ahead of second round

Premier League referees and Assistant referees are currently undergoing a refresher course in Prampram for the second round of the Premier League season.

The first batch ended their training on Friday, with the second batch set to commence training on Saturday, March 13.

The refresher course started on Wednesday, March 10, with the introduction of the new concept for Referees and Assistant Referees and also YOYO Endurance test which accesses their fitness levels.

The 2nd and 3rd days were designed for physical and practical training, emphasizing on positioning, reading and anticipation through gates 1&2 on the penalty area to analyse fouls (actions 1,2,3 & 4). The practical training ended today with Referees undertaking some high runs and engaging in open play situations to recognize the various gates and action points.

The Technical Instructors include Richard Attifu, Seidu Bomison, Christine Ziga and Thomas Nunoo. The physical instructors are, Anthony Tetteh-Opai, Augustina Fugah and Vivian Aggor. The course is under the supervision of GFA Referees Manager, Alexander Kotey.

Ghana Premier League Coaches end one day Technical review programme

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), on Wednesday, March 11, 2021 organized a one-day Technical review and coach engagement programme for Head Coaches of the 18 Premier League clubs at the GFA headquarters in Accra.

Technical Director, Bernhard Lippert led the session with assistance from Director of Coaching Education Professor Joseph Kwame Mintah.

German trainer Erich Ruthmoller who is in Ghana for a one-week technical advancement programme for national team Coaches was one of the speakers. The former German International, spoke on modern trends of football, player psychology, team preparation and tactical approach to games.

Coaches were given the opportunity to pour out their challenges, exchange ideas and come up with suggestions to improve the League especially in the second round.

Other speakers included Club Licensing Manager Ben Julius Emunah, Deputy General Secretary Alex Asante, Mark Addo of the Competitions department and Director of Communications, Henry Asante Twum.

GFA Executive Council member, Dr. Randy Abbey opened the course.

Emmanuel Sarkodie accepts criticism from Asante Kotoko fans

Asante Kotoko midfielder, Emmanuel Sarkodie has insisted that he has no problems with fans’ criticism of his recent form in matches he has played. 

The versatile midfielder believes he has a responsibility to get himself in top shape to help the club achieve its Premier League winning target.

The former Nkoranza Warriors man has enjoyed much playing time since Emmanuel Keyekeh suffered an injury.

A section of the Porcupine Warriors supporters offered scathing assessments of Sarkodie’s performances in the two CAF Confederations Cup games with ES Setif.

The assessments were in sharp contrast to previous views on Sarkodie’s form, and the player has indicated he is working hard to improve. 

“It is normal in football to hear people tell you what you are doing wrong,” admits Sarkodie in an interview with the club’s website.

“Criticisms are part of the game and I respect the fans’ opinion. Like most professionals, I also aspire to improve on my skill every day.

“The club wants to win the league and my colleagues and I have been brought here to help achieve that. I have to be in top form to contribute positively, and that is what I try to do every day.”

Aduana Stars have confirmed the signing of defender Nurudeen Abdulai on a free transfer.

The centre-back penned down a two-year deal with the two-time Ghana Premier League winners on Friday, March 12, 2021.

Nurudeen, despite making 10 appearances for leaders Karela United in the first round of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League, was not offered an extension following the expiration of his two-year contract.

Nurudeen 23, joined Karela United Football Club from AshantiGold Sporting Club in 2018.

DOL Zone Three Preview: Planners host Accra Lions, Weavers face Tema Youth, Heart of Lions square off with Amidaus

Okyeman Planners FC will host zone three leaders Accra Lions on match day 12 of the Division One League at Akyem Tafo on Sunday.

Planners FC will for the first time this season, honour their home game outside Accra following the decision of the Club Licensing Board to revoke the license of the Carl Reindorf park in Dansoman, their adopted home ground.

They are among the top five clubs in the Zone three table and will fight for all the points against a high-flying Accra Lions side. The league leaders are unbeaten in the ongoing season sitting at the top of the table with 27 points, six points richer than Planners FC.

Evans Etti is in an unstoppable shape, keeping defenders on red alert and scoring with ease. The former Karela United player has scored 7 goals after 11 games in the season, a performance that earned him a senior national team call up three weeks ago.

The diminutive attacker has yet to find the back of the net in his last three outing and will seek to end his goal drought against Planners FC on Sunday.

Elsewhere in the Habour City, Tema Youth will aim to return to winning ways against Agbozume Weavers after last week’s 1-1 draw with Accra City stars.

Evans Osei Wusu scored late to rescue a point for his side after going down to Clinton Osei’s first half strike. Tema Youth are currently occupying the second spot in zone three with 25 points, two behind Accra Lions FC.

Akosombo Krystal Palace will play at home against Danbort FC while Heart of Lions welcome Amidaus Professionals to the Kpando park.

DOL Zone Two Preview: Leaders Skyy FC entertain New Edubiase, Gold Stars battle Vipers, Proud United host Sekondi Hasaacas

Leaders Skyy FC will aim to maintain their position at the summit of the zone table when they host New Edubiase United on match day 12 of the Division One League.

The Daboase side will battle the former Premier League side on Sunday as they search of a win to extend their four-game unbeaten run.

Skyy FC last left it late to beat Star Madrid 3-2 on Sunday to stretch their lead to one point richer than second place Bibiani Gold Stars. They lead the table with 25 points from 11 matches with Gold Stars breathing down their neck with 24 points.

They have been absolutely magnificent in their last five outings both at home and on the road as they have picked more points (13) than any other side in the Zone.

On Sunday, they come face to face against one of the experienced sides in Zone two, New Edubiase United, who sit in 4th place with 18 points, 7 points adrift the leaders.

In other games, Gold Stars who are keeping incessant pressure on Skyy FC will host Venomous Vipers at Dun’s park at Bibiani.

Gold Stars have the zones leading scorer, Prince Owusu in their set up and his 10 goals have proved crucial in their fight for Premier League status. The lanky attacker has scored five goals in his last four outings including a brace against All Blacks in Swedru on Sunday.

Third placed Samartex have a tough test against Nzema Kotoko at Sameraboi. Bottom placed Proud United will lock horns with Hasaacas in the Sekondi derby at the Gyandu park.
