Preview: Tamale City vs Steadfast FC derby headlines match day 12 fixtures in Zone One

Zone One leaders Steadfast FC have a stern test against rivals Tamale City on match day 12 of the National Division One League.

The derby which will take place at the Aliu Mahama stadium on Saturday will see two of the best teams in the Zone facing off. Steadfast FC moved to the top of the zone one table on Sunday following a 2-1 win against Young Apostles with Halibu Alhassan scoring a brace for the Tamale lads.

Steadfast FC share the top spot with Wamanafo Mighty Royals on 22 points but with superior goal difference. Black Satellites midfielder Issahaku Abdul Fatawu is expected to feature for them on Saturday, fresh from his heroics at the just ended Total U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Mauritania.

The 16-year-old who was adjudged the overall best player of the tournament is a key figure in the team and would add a lot of bite to the side if he features.

Fatawu scored three goals for the club before joining his Black Satellites team mates for the AFCON tournament.

Another player who is stealing headlines in the Zone is 20-year-old Alhassan Siisu. Siisu has scored 7 goals in the ongoing campaign, making him one of the fearful strikers in the Zone.

Tamale City are two points adrift of the top, sitting in 6th place with 20 points from 11 games. They may not be rated as favourites, but have one of the best strike pair in the zone. Sam Otis (six goals) and Isaac Mensah (4 goals) have 10 goals between them, a deadly duo in zone one.

Second placed Wamanafo Mighty Royals have a date with Nsoatreman at the Coronation park in Sunyani. Thirds placed Real Tamale United will play B.A United at the Aliu Mahama stadium on Sunday. RTU have 21 points while B.A United sit in 9th place with 16 points.

Kotoko to appoint ex-Black Stars coach Mariano Bareto as new head coach

Asante Kotoko is set to appoint Mariano Bareto as the club’s new head coach, sources have confirmed to Happy Sports.

Management has been in contact with the representatives of the Portuguese manager and talks are far advanced for a deal to be reached.

The former Black Stars coach is reported to have agreed to become the next coach of the Ghana Premier League giants.

Asante Kotoko after parting ways with head coach Maxwell Konadu, named Abdul Gazale as the interim coach.

Nigerien star Victorien Adebayor has disclosed the reason for swerving local giants, Hearts of Oak to sign for Legon Cities.

According to the former Inter Allies player, he loves the challenge at struggling clubs as it helps him to also carve his name in their history.

Snippets of information gathered indicated that the Phobians were interested securing the services of in the striker.

There were reports in the media that Hearts has succeeded in signing him.

However, Adebayor opted for the big-spending Legin Cities who are just two points above relegation.

“Hearts and Kotoko are big clubs and I don’t like big teams, I like smaller teams and I’m ready for challenges like that and that helps my career too,” he said at his unveiling.

“They are down in the league and Legon Cities know why they came for me and so my target is to help the team as much as I can,” added the striker.

Adebayor is joking the Royals on loan from Danish outfit HB Koge till the rest of the season, with the club having the option of extending the deal.

The 24-year-old was top scorer in the league before it was cancelled due to COVID-19.

German Bundesliga club RB Leipzig sign Ghanaian-born Dutch striker Brian Brobbey

Ghanaian-born Dutch striker, Brian Brobbey has agreed to join RB Leipzig as a free agent this summer, the German Bundesliga club announced Friday.

Weeks ago, Ajax confirmed that the 19-year-old would leave the club at the end of the season after refusing to renew his contract.

Brobbey has since been tipped to join Leipzig.

And after scoring in Ajax’s 3-0 win over Young Boys in the Europa League Thursday night, the Bundesliga side have now confirmed that the youngster has an agreement on a four-year deal and will join the club in the summer once his contract with Ajax expires.

Portions of a club statement read: “Brian Brobbey will join RB Leipzig from Dutch record champions Ajax on 1 July 2021. The 19-year-old has signed a four-year deal until 2025.

“His preferred position is as a centre forward, but he can be used anywhere across the attacking line.”

Brobbey also stated:

“RB Leipzig is a great club and is going through a great season. Julian Nagelsmann is a young and very good coach, from whom I can learn a lot.

“The team is stable and has a strong sense of unity. I look forward to joining the team and of course, I want to help the club to be as successful as possible.”

So far in the 2020/21 season, Brian Brobbey has made 11 appearances for Ajax, scoring four goals and adding two assists.

South African Dr. Patrice Motsepe elected CAF President

Dr. Patrice Motsepe has been elected as the new President of the Confederation of African Football (Caf).

The South African – who becomes the seventh (7th) person to occupy the position – begins his four-year term after being elected unopposed by Member Associations at the 43rd Caf General Assembly in Rabat on Friday, March 12.

Going to the General Assembly, Africa adopted a unity stance which saw other three candidates, namely Augustin Senghor, Ahmed Yahya and Jacques Anouma withdraw from the race to be President.

Fifa President Gianni Infantino, who was in attendance in Rabat, in his remarks in the General Assembly commended the African Member Associates for the unity they have displayed in the last few weeks.

Dr. Motsepe, 59, is an accomplished South African businessman and philanthropist and no stranger to football. For almost two decades, he has been the President of a South African club, Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Phobians have added to their setup former Aduana Stars full-back ahead of the start of the GPL second round

Former Aduana Stars defender Caleb Amankwah has joined Hearts of Oak in a two-and-half-a-season deal as a free agent in an undisclosed fee.

The defender completed his contract with Aduana last season and opted not to renew his stay before the start of the 2020/21 season.

He was initially linked with a move to an unnamed club in Europe but despite much publicity around that move, it eventually fell through.

Amankwah will join his new teammates hopefully this weekend as Hearts prepare for the start of the second half of the campaign.

The Phobians are seeking to strengthen their defence in their ambition to end a run without major trophy since 2009.

Veteran striker Alex Asamoah eyes goal king with Eleven Wonders

Eleven Wonders returnee, Alex Asamoah has set sight on joining the goal king race soon ahead of the start of the second round of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League.

The former Asante Kotoko and Aduana Stars striker Alex Asamoah rejoined Ghana Premier League side Techiman-based club on Thursday, March 11, 2021, signing a one-year deal.

Asamoah first joined the Techiman-based club in 2018 on a free transfer after ending his stay with Burkinabé side Rail Club du Kadiogo but the two parties mutually parted ways the following year.

Asamoah has a rich experience in Ghana’s elite division having also featured for the likes of Berekum Arsenals and Ashanti Gold.

The 35-year-old won the golden boot with Kotoko in 2009 and has assured the supporters of Eleven Wonders to keep calm.

Speaking to Kumasi based OTEC FM, Alex Asamoah assured the Techiman based outfit of taking them to the promise land.

“I’ve done it before, not only in Ghana and I still believe in myself that I will be in the Goal King race. Give me 10 chances and I will score 8,” Alex Asamoah told OTEC FM.

“The so-called old players (Yahaya Mohammed, Gladson Awako, Hans Kwoffie, etc) are still playing well in our league which some lead the Goal King so I will continue what I normally do when the league resumes” He concluded.

He has also played for Algerian Club ES Sétif as well as Gyeongnam FC In South Korea.

Karela United forward Diawisie Taylor leads the goal king race with 12 goals.

Niger star Victorien Adebayor lands in Accra to complete Legon Cities switch

Niger star Victorien Adebayor has arrived in Ghana to start his loan career with Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities FC.

The club on Thursday, 11 March 2021, posted photos of the 24-year-old’s arrival at the Kotoka International Airport.

Last month, Danish club HB Koge confirmed the former Inter Allies talisman was making a return to the Ghana top-flight on a short term deal.

He will spend the rest of the 2020/2021 season with the relegation .

Adebayor joined the Danish second-tier side from Ghana Premier League outfit Inter Allies FC in October 2020.

He scored 12 goals in 13 matches in the Ghanaian top-flight in the 2019/2020 season before leaving for Denmark.

Cities are keen on finishing at the top half of the Ghana Premier League at the end of the season hence the signing of the prolific attacker.

Adebayor joins Richmond Antwi, Hans Kwofie and Justice Anane as the latest additions to the Royals squad in the second transfer window.

GFA President Kurt Okraku withdraws from CAF ExCo Elections

Effective Thursday, March 11, 2021, the President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has withdrawn his candidacy from the CAF Executive Committee elections.

Mr. Simeon-Okraku told a meeting of Executives of WAFU Zone B on Thursday in Rabat that he was withdrawing from the race to help foster unity in the zonal body.

His withdrawal was announced in the WAFU Zone B Executive Committee meeting held on the side-lines of the CAF General Assembly in Rabat, Morocco.

A letter to this effect has been sent to the CAF.

The GFA President informed his colleagues that in the spirit of unity and togetherness he has withdrawn and will rather support the current WAFU Zone B President whole heartedly with all the ideas for the development of football on the continent.

“I wish the remaining candidates the best of luck and pray that CAF comes out stronger than ever after these elections,” the Ghana FA President said to a wild applause of the delegates.

“I plan to continue to offer CAF my very best of developmental ideas. I will continue to support the good works and look forward to serving at the highest level in future. Thank you for all your support during this time,” Mr Simeon-Okraku added.

The CAF elections take place at the CAF General and Elective Assembly at 10am at Sofitel Hotel & Resort in Rabat, Morocco tomorrow, March 12, 2021.

Djibrilla Hima Hamidou, the WAFU Zone B and Niger Football Federation President, will therefore be the sole candidate for the particular election.
