Black Stars’ Qatar 2022 World Cup qualification hopes suffer major setback after Ethiopia draw

Ghana were held to a 1-1 draw by the Walias of Ethiopia in the penultimate 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

The Black Stars started the game on the front foot and nearly stung gold in the opening minutes of the game, goalkeeper Teklemariam Shanko pulled off two great saves to deny Andre Ayew and Richmond Boakye-Yiadom.

Ghana continued to control the game and were rewarded with the first goal in the 22nd minute, Andre Ayew curled in a free-kick from just outside the box.

Minutes later, Ghana nearly doubled their lead through Kamaldeen Sulemana, the French Ligue player of the month for October danced his way into the Ethiopia defense but his final effort was a bit high.

The Ethiopians controlled the remaining minutes of the first half, forcing the Ghana midfield and back line into making mistakes. However, they failed to capitalize those mistakes.

Ghana continued to make mistakes in the opening minutes of the second half and were nearly pegged back in the 57th minute, Shemeles Bekele struck the post after robbing Mohammed Kudus off the ball.

The Black Stars were pegged back in the 72nd minute. The Ethiopians this time capitalized on an error by Joseph Aidoo to score through Getaneh Kebede.

Ghana in the remaining minutes made changes with the hope of getting the winner but to no avail.

The great Steven Gerrard is back in the English Premier League. The legend has been appointed as Aston Villa’s new manager.

“Aston Villa Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Steven Gerrard as our new Head Coach,” the club announced on Thursday.

This news follows after the Villians parted ways with Dean Smith on Monday 8 November. Smith left as a club legend after lifting the club from the championship in the 2019/20 season. He was, unfortunately, let go after an alarming string of five straight defeats.

Meanwhile, Gerrard arrives after proving his immense quality in Scotland with giants Rangers.

“Gerrard guided Glasgow Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title last season, finishing the campaign undefeated in the league,” Villa’s statement said.

“The 41-year-old has attracted many admirers in the game for his work in transforming the fortunes of the Glasgow giants while also implementing an attractive, attacking style of football.

“Gerrard, who enjoyed a glittering playing career with Liverpool and England, joined Rangers in 2018 following a spell as an Academy Coach at Liverpool.”

Meanwhile, Gerrard is set to make his debut as a Premier League manager at home to Brighton & Hove Albion after the FIFA break.

GFA Technical Directorate develops structure for national team coaches

0

The Technical Directorate of the Ghana Football Association has developed a structure for all national team Coaches (Male and Female).

The structure which is aimed at improving Technical analysis, data keeping and player development will run from the junior national teams to the Home based senior side (Black Stars B).

Head Coaches of the Black Starlets, Maidens, Princesses, Satellites, Meteors, Queens and the Home based senior side are to use this perfect template to build a data base for the teams, analyse and asses players and also to monitor their progress and development. The Directorate also intends to monitor tactical reports from Coaches before, during and after matches.

The three thematic areas that are of importance to the Directorate are as follows:

  • Scouting Report

The Technical department requires individual reports of players in other to be able to monitor these players scouted, therefore we require the Coaches to provide us with initial information of the players to monitor and access their growth.

  • Pre match Technical report:

This is to inform the Technical Directorate about the layout plan for each match and how a coach would like to approach the match. Each coach is required to furnish the Directorate with details before every match.

  • Technical Report

This is a post-match report and the Directorate requires that each coach furnishes the office with a similar format after each match. This will assist the Technical Director in giving advice and recommendations to the Coaches.

The move also forms part of the general effort to put together a comprehensive data for all national teams and to equip the Coaches with the right Technical information and approach to International games.

Dani Alves set for sensational return to Barcelona

0

Dani Alves is set to meet with Barcelona’s senior executives to discuss a possible comeback to the club in the January transfer window.

The 38-year-old is not yet retired, but he departed Sao Paulo in September amid an unpaid image rights dispute. He left Barça in 2016, but the club has struggled to fully replace him since then.

Since Alves’ departure, Sergi Roberto has frequently filled in at right-back, while Sergino Dest and Oscar Mingueza have also played there recently.

According to UOL, the Brazilian is expected to sign a contract with the LaLiga giants in the coming days.

Spanish publication AS also reports that Dest could benefit from the move, with Alves serving as one of the best possible mentors for the young American.

The salary and terms of the contract will be addressed, with Alves aiming for a World Cup swan song with Brazil in 2022. He continues to play for the Selecao, most recently in a 2-0 World Cup qualification win over Peru in September. After making his debut in 2006, he now has 119 caps for his country.

Xavi, the new Barça manager, would also have to approve the transfer. During the Catalan team’s better years, when they were consistently winning league titles and challenging for the Champions League, the two played together.

President Joan Laporta recently commented on the possibility of a return for Alves, stating: “Dani Alves is helping the club in many ways, and he also offered us his help from a sporting perspective. With [Carles] Puyol there is a very direct relationship. They can help if Xavi needs them.”

Xavi’s first game as head coach will be a local derby against Espanyol.
