Europa League: Ten-man Frankfurt hold Barcelona, West Ham pegged back by Lyon

Barcelona settled for a 1-1 draw with ten-man Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals.

Barcelona almost took the lead early in the game as Torres’ 25-yard pile driver was saved by Trapp and went over the bar.

Frankfurt were in the driving seat and could have already scored two just before halftime. Barcelona had shown little apart from Torres’ early chance.

Minutes to halftime, Frankfurt were awarded a penalty after Busquests brought Borre down inside the danger zone. The centre referee pointed for the spot but Barcelona players were protesting and the referee had to go for a quick VAR check. After a brief check, the penalty was overturned.

The hosts picked from where they left and were pressing Barcelona in the early minutes of the second half. After some build-up, Barca cleared and the ball landed dearly to Knauff who volleyed a spinning ball past Ter-Stegen.

West Ham United – Olympique Lyonnais

It was a tight contest that saw the two teams head into halftime without a goal. However, West Ham were reduced to ten men as Cresswell was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Dembele.

The Hammers wanted a penalty after Antonio went down, but didn’t get the decision. Seconds later, the ball bobbled through into the path of Bowen, his shot then took a deflection too and it bounced over the goalkeeper and into the net.

Lyon got their equalizer through Tanguy Ndombele. The former Tottenham man had got the equaliser. Tete’s low cross into the box is parried out by Areola, straight into the path of Ndombele via a deflected off Fredericks. Simple finish and Lyon were back on terms.

Sulley Muntari, two other key Hearts of Oak players to miss Asante Kotoko clash on Sunday

Hearts of Oak will be without three key players when they take on Asante Kotoko in a Ghana Premier League match day 24 fixture.

The Phobians will trek to Kumasi to meet the league leaders at the Baba Yara Stadium in a reverse fixture. The first round match ended goalless in Accra.

However, star midfielder Sulley Muntari will miss the titanic clash against Asante Kotoko. The former Inter Milan star, according to Ghanasoccernet is currently out of the country for reasons yet to be disclosed by the club.

Sulley Muntari is currently in Italy for some personal-related issues. The 37-year-old did not train with the team this week at St. Thomas Aquinas Park.

Also, the club will be without Salifu Ibrahim who has recovered from his lengthy injury spell. Salifu will travel with the team to Kumasi but will not take part in the game, a close source tells footy.ghpush.com/.

Goalkeeper, Richmond Ayi will also miss the crucial game due to cards accumulations.

Asante Kotoko are currently on top of the table with 46 points and have opened a 13-point lead against arch-rivals Hearts of Oak.

Asante Kotoko legend, Samuel Opoko Nti has stated that their bitterest rivals Hearts of Oak cannot beat them back to back.

Opoku Nti speaking on Kessben TV’s Extra Time Sports show was optimistic that Asante Kotoko will retaliate for the defeat they suffered against Hearts of Oak last month.

The Porcupines lost by 2-1 to the Phobians in the presidential cup which was played at the Accra Sports stadium.

The league leaders are confident they will beat Hearts on Sunday at the Baba Yara stadium to cement their comfortable lead on the Ghana premier league.

After matchday 23 in the league, Kotoko comfortably sits at the top of the league with 49 points with Bechem United occupying the 2nd with 41 points.

Hearts of Oak occupies the 4th position with 36 points.

Thomas Partey suffered muscle damage during Arsenal’s 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Monday, the club has confirmed.

Partey was substituted in the second half with Sambi Lokonga being introduced minutes before Arsenal conceded the third goal. Mikel Arteta revealed the Ghanian injury didn’t look good but no the Gunners’ recent update does not suggest a quick return for the midfielder.

“Our No. 5 was substituted during Monday night’s game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park after aggravating his right thigh,” a statement from the medical team read.

“Thomas has since received further assessments, and a subsequent scan has shown muscle damage to his right thigh.”

“We will continue to assess Thomas in the coming weeks, during which time he will also receive further specialist consultations.”

It is yet again another blow for the north London side with news Kieran Tierney is set to miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury.

Berekum Chelsea displayed outstanding resilience on Thursday afternoon to defeat King Faisal 1-0 in the Ghana Premier League.

The two clubs today locked horns at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi to clear the matchday 21 outstanding game of the 2021/22 Ghanaian top-flight league campaign.

Following a bright start to the encounter, an early strike from Owusu Osei in the 6th minute of the game shot Berekum Chelsea into the lead.

Although King Faisal would come in strong to try to restore parity, the visitors proved too strong and held on to secure a narrow 1-0 win at the end of the tough contest.

Courtesy of the win today, Berekum Chelsea have climbed to 11th on the Ghana Premier League standings with King Faisal dropping to 11th on the log.

Today’s defeat means King Faisal have lost all of its last five matches in the Ghana Premier League.

Should the trend continue, the team could soon fall into the relegation zone.

Stephen Oduro picks Hans Dieter Schmidt as his best-ever Asante Kotoko coach

Former Asante Kotoko star Stephen Oduro has played under some big names during his illustrious playing career. Apart from Kotoko and RTU, he never played for any other club in Ghana before he called it a quit.

The 38-year-old was hugely regarded as the fans favourite following his unrivalled commitment to the club since his arrival from Real Tamale United in 2000. 

And in his days, the former Porcupine has had the chance to play under some massive managers such as the late Herbert Addo, Maxwell Konadu, Didi Dramani, Ernst Middendorp, Karim Abdul Razak all appear on his list of coaches he’s played under. But when asked about the best coach he has played under, Oduro named German tactician Hans Dieter Schmidt as his best ever.

Oduro played under Dieter Schmidt in the 2004/5 season during his 16-year stint with Asante Kotoko.

He described the German coach who was nicknamed ‘Abe nkwan’ as tactical and generous during his days in Kumasi.

“I will give my best coach to [Hans] Dieter Schmidt. He’s my best because he’s very tactical and also the only who can solve your financial issues at home for you if you are in need,” Oduro noted in an interview with Revolt Gh on Youtube.

“He doesn’t shout at players but ]Ernst] Middendorp too was good but very aggressive on his players and this is why I will choose Schmidt,” Oduro said.

Stephen Oduro who’s the club’s longest-serving player in history now lives in the USA.

Ghana defender Alexander Djiku’s strike against AS Monaco has been nominated for March’s goal of the month in the French Ligue 1.

It was Djiku’s second goal for the club since joining them three seasons ago from relegated Caen.

Ghana to defend WAFU Zone B Cup of Nations in Niger

WAFU Zone B has confirmed Niger as the host Nation for the 2022 U-20 Cup of Nations.

The biennial tournament which serves as qualifiers for the Totalenergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations will be held in Niamey – Niger from Saturday, May 7 to Friday, May 20, 2022.

Reigning champions Ghana will compete with Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Benin, Togo and host Niger for the trophy.

The Black Satellites came from behind to beat Burkina Faso 2-1 to win the 2022 Championship at the Stade Charles De Gaulles in Porto Novo, Benin.

Coach Abdul Karim Zito’s team are currently preparing for the 2022 tournament at the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence at Prampram.

Former Ghana and Berekum Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has reiterated his intention to return to Asante Kotoko to finish his business with the club.

Agyemang-Badu spent one season at Kotoko. He joined the club on loan in 2008 from Berekum Arsenal and won the Ghana Premier League title before leaving for Europe.

The 31-year-old missed a lot of games for Kotoko because he was strongly involved with the national U20 team that won the 2009 FIFA World Cup in Egypt.

“Even if Kotoko management doesn’t approach me, I will come down to Kumasi and contact them myself. If they fail to call me, they will see me with my stuff at their training ground. If the management, coach anyone fail to call me, I know the supporters will call me to come,” he told Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM.

Badu also debunked reports linking him with a move to Hearts of Oak, but stated that should a deal to rejoin Kotoko fail, he could join another local club.

“I’ve not spoken to any Hearts of Oak person, surprises may come which will cause me to play for any other club which might not be Kotoko but the respect I have for the club (Kotoko) is there so I will never jubilate when I score against them”

Badu urged the players and technical team to focus on accumulating points to end their trophy drought this season.

“The most important thing is concentrate on the league, Aduana Stars is closing up which is very dangerous for us so we should concentrate more and make sure our players are recovered because we need everyone one on board to help us win something for the club after so many years of starving the supporters”

The former Udinese midfielder further advised the fans to patronize Kotoko’s games for the management to raise funds to take care of the players if they want the club to keep their stars for long.

“It’s a very crucial moment for the club, the supporters should come to stadium because the CEO needs money to cater for the boys because we can’t do anything if after the season he decides to sell Mbella so we should all go and support, though times are hard these days but we should do our best to raise funds for the club”
