Ghanaian giants Ampem Darkoa Ladies defeat USFA in Women’s Champions League qualifiers

Ghana’s representatives at the WAFU Zone B Champions League qualifiers, Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC defeated Burkina Faso side Union Sportive des Forces (USFA) Armees in the Group B opener on Sunday afternoon.

They inflicted a heavy 3-0 defeat on the Burkinabe side in their first match in Yamoussoukro – Ivory Coast

Ampem Darkoa Ladies started the game on the front foot and quickly broke the deadlock of the game in the 10th minute through Elizabeth Owusuaa.

The Ghanaian champions added the second goal in the 40th minute after Constance Serwaa’s low cross deflected off a defender from the opponent to make it 2-0.

They wrapped up the scoreline in the 88th minute of the game as Mavis Owusu added the third goal for Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC.

Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC will face Nigerian side Bayelsa Queens in their second Group B game on Wednesday.

Ampem Darkoa Ladies are in Group B alongside Union Sportive des forces Armees (Burkina Faso), Athleta FC(Togo) and Bayelsa Queens (Nigeria) with just one team set to represent West Africa at the Champions League.

Former Asante Kotoko coach, Dr Prosper Narteh Ogum, with the backing of the Board and Management, regardless of any pitfalls he had, distinguished himself. He took the path of some first-time Kotoko coaches to win the Ghana Premier League (GPL) with historic victories that wrapped the hearts of many Kotoko fans in joyfulness. 

New trainer Seydou Zerbo would not alone continue from where Ogum left but also write his history, hopefully, in indelible, fabulous ink. Anxiousness and disappointment filled supporters’ rank when Ogum quit. That disappointing news notwithstanding, there was every need to patiently wait for the naming of a new coach. 

With Ogum’s thanksgiving note arriving last week, it was inevitable that this week would birth his replacement, especially as the pre-season work enters the final lap. The team heads to Sudan, not Turkey, as earlier announced, chiefly because of complications with securing necessary travel documents to the European country. 

Sudan is equally good as it brings memories of the club’s trip to the North African state 14 years ago when there was a similar pre-season visit, which preceded our 2007/08 season league title triumph. It’s expected that all goes well and that our return would usher Coach Zerbo and his charges into a blissful season. 

A season where we would survive the usual odds, battle familiar foes to reaffirm our status as the best. A season where our sojourn in Africa would be prolonged, seeing us represent Ghana well in the CAF Champions League. A season in which fans would contribute meaningfully to every good work. A season where coaches and players would perform to achieve their targets.  

I welcome 59-year-old Coach Zerbo with the conviction that he’s here to add to our successes. The former Stallions coach might find this terrain new but not so different from his native Burkina Faso. He’s in the sub region. He must feel at home and deliver to satisfaction. As a former RC Kadiogo coach, our opponent in next month’s CAF Champions League qulifier, his coming is opportune.

Those who fear the language barrier shouldn’t be too apprehensive because no matter what, football has its distinct language. In fact, where necessary, Management would know how to mitigate English handicap he may have. We should be pleased that he’s French, and combined with any amount of English he speaks, neither our French players nor home-based players would be alienated.

It’s hoped that his knowledge and experience would impact the team, and results on the pitch would vindicate Management’s decision. Meanwhile, we must be reminded of this: For all football teams, big changes in the playing body and the technical team have their advantages, and they’ve their downsides too.

Whichever of the attendant developments associated with changing and chopping teams we expereince, and the time, exercising patience and rendering maximum support, will always be important. Let’s throw our weight behind the new coach and the team as we expect the best from everyone.

Asante Kotoko have arrived in Sudan for the second phase of their pre-season ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The reigning Ghanaian champions departed the West African country on Sunday afternoon to the North African country with a 22-man squad.

According to the club, Cameroon duo Georges Mfegue Omgba and Franck Mbella Etouga who was taken to hospital on Friday due to his ill health were left out of the travelling squad list to the North African country.

Also, Patrick Asmah, Charles Owusu, Maxwell Agyemang and striker Samuel Boateng were all excluded from the list despite recovering from injuries following caution from the club’s medical team.

Goalkeeper Ibrahim Danlad is on international duty with the Black Galaxies in Austria. 

Again, youngster Ibrahim Osman who returned from a season-long loan stint at King Faisal as well as Justice Blay and Mohammed Sheriff – who got injured in the course of last season – could not make the trip.

However, midfielder Richmond Lamptey and Ismail Ganiyu did not travel with the team to Sudan earlier on Sunday due their traveling documents. The duo are expected to join the team later in Sudan.

Kotoko are expected to spend 10 days for the pre-season in Sudan and will be playing a high-profile friendly game against Sudanese giants Al Hilal SC.

They were billed to travel to Turkey for the pre-season exercise but it fell through due to issue of delays in visa acquisition hence the decision to move to Sudan.

Asante Kotoko have revealed that nine players have been excluded from their contingent for the pre-season trip to Sudan due to injuries.

GHALCA G6: Hearts Of Oak suffer disappointing defeat in their first match against Medeama

FA Cup champions Hearts of Oak suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat in their first match of the ongoing pre-season competition, GHALCA G6, on Sunday.

The Phobians were defeated by a motivated Medeama side at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Medeama started the game on a high note, scoring two quick goals before the half-hour mark.

They took the lead in the 22nd minute when Darlington Gyan Fosu’s shot deflected off Hearts of Oak centre-back Emmanuel Tsawortey and into his own net.

Two minutes later, Medeama grabbed their second through Joshua Agyemang as the Mauves and Yellows ended the first half with a comfortable lead.

Medeama returned from the break with more firepower and they registered their third courtesy of Agyemang who scored his second of the day.

Hearts of Oak’s only goal came in the 63rd minute through Magnus Owusu.

Hearts of Oak will face Berekum Chelsea, who won their first game 2-0 against Medeama, in their final Group B game on Thursday.

Enoch Morrison reveals what influenced his decision to join Asante Kotoko from King Faisal

Newly-signed Asante Kotoko midfielder Enoch Morrison has expressed delight after joining Asante Kotoko and added it has always been his desire.

The 22 year old was earlier yesterday announced as the Porcupines eight arrival in the ongoing transfer window, having signed until 2025.

Morrison is rated among the best attacking midfielders in the Ghana Premier League following his exploits at King Faisal in the last two seasons.

He managed to score seven goals and provided two assists in his 21 outings for the ‘Insha Allah’ outfit during the 2021/22 season.

Speaking on Akoma FM, the ex- King Faisal playmaker has disclosed that, it has been his wish to join Kotoko and are one of the best in the country. He said;

“Kotoko is a very good team. Almost all the players are my friends. we play, live together and do other things together.”

“They are very good well organized club. One of the best in the country. I have received numerous calls when it was speculated that Kotoko were pursuing me.”

“I love the two top teams in the country (Kotoko and Hearts) but I prefer playing for Kotoko because it’s always been my heart desire.”

OFFICIAL: Asante Kotoko name Seydou Zerbo as new Head Coach

Asante Kotoko have confirmed the appointment of former Burkina Faso national team coach Seydou Zerbo until the end of the season.

Zerbo arrived in Ghana last night to conclude negotiations and other documentation.

The 59-year-old who is nicknamed “Krol” after a Dutch tactician is a replacement to Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum who recently resigned from his post.

Dr. Ogum guided the Ghanaian giants to clinch the Ghana Premier League title for the first time in eight years.

Zerbo’s last job was the handling of the Burkina Faso national team at the 2020 CHAN tournament in Cameroon. The Stallions exited at the group stages.

The highly-rated tactician begun his coaching career in the 2013-14 season when he was in charge of Rail Club du Kadiogo.

He later coached Bankuy Sports from 2014 to 2016 before heading to SONABEL and giants ASFA Yennenga.

Zerbo’s last team was Union Sportive des Forces Armées before he was handed the local national team job.

He is expected to guide the Fabulous team to defend their Ghana Premier League title, make an impact in the CAF Champions League and also in the Ghana FA Cup.

Kotoko will face Burkina Faso champions Rail Club du Kadiogo in the first preliminary round of the Champions League set to begin in September.
