0

Asante Kotoko defender, Christopher Nettey has touted the quality of the suspended 2019/20 Ghana Premier League season.

According to him, the season was competitive and that has brought the quality in most of the players.

The Ghanaian top-flight has been put on hold due to the novel COVID-19 pandemic.

The right-back tells Kotoko Express App that the season was ‘turning out to be the best in recent year’ before it was suspended indefinitely after the Covid-19 outbreak.

Christopher Nettey

“This season was proving to be the most competitive in recent years until it was suspended,” observes the Christopher Nettey.

“Unlike the past years where a club could have been leading the league by a wider margin at this stage of the competition, the build-up of this year’s is very close.

“The competition is very intense at the top, middle and even at the bottom and just one win or slip could change a lot.”

The points between the clubs were minimalbefore the season was put on hold on match-day 15.

Ashgold at 5th position have three points adrift leaders, Aduana Stars, only four points separate 6th place Medeama from 10th place, Great Olympics with just three points also separating 11th place, Inter Allies and 15th place, Legon Cities.

Moore explained that the deal involves a revenue share of all the sponsors that will be on the program.

Hearts officials with GTV management

He indicated that Hearts are not financially strong to cater for the production cost and that it gives them opportunity to channel their funds to other areas of the club that need development.

“I know that in the last week, there was a lot of debate about whether there was any money involved in the GTV deal,” he said on Oyerepa FM.

“If we had done it on our own without GTV Sports as partners, it would have cost us a lot of money so we are saving a huge amount of resources so we can use the resources in other areas.

“It involves a revenue share of all the sponsors and marketing on the program, so it’s not totally without money and it’s not a sponsorship but partnership with good share of the money.”

Hearts signed a three-year deal with GTV Sports Plus – a subsidiary of GTV to show exclusive contents of the club to its supporters around the world.

Former Asante Kotoko striker, Eric Kwabena Bekoe has thrown his support behind the club’s Executive Chairman, Kwame Kyei, noting that he is not God to see everything in the club.

The Kwame Kyei-led administration has been hugely criticized for lapses in their activities which have cost the club huge judgment debts.

Among them is the whooping fine of $240,000 which the club paid with regards to the wrongful registration of Emmanuel Clottey .

Again, the Porcupine Warriors have been fined $34,000 for dismissing former coach CK Akonnor without any tangible reasons.

Speaking in an interview with Vision FM, Bekoe noted that Mr. Kyei is not a god to see all shortfalls in the club.

“I have not taken money from Dr Kwame Kyei but whatever be the case we have to support him so he can accomplish he visions for the club,”he told Vision FM.

“Personally, I can’t blame him for recent Kotoko issues because he is a man that loves the club and has ordered people to take care of certain positions. The truth is that, he is not god to see everything and that is why he has delegated some of his powers to people.

“So if things are not going on well for the club, there should be an auditor to audit so we can know where exactly the problem is” he concluded.

Bekoe joined Kotoko prior to the 2007/08 season, winning the goal King award with 17 goals.

Onyango: “I want to retire at Sundowns”

0

Many football fans in South Africa, Africa and even the world at large wonder why Ugandan shotstopper Denis Onyango has not left the shores of Africa despite being touted as one of the finest the goalkeepers produced in the continent.

Onyango has stated emphatically that he’s loyal and focused on finishing his playing career at South Africa’s heavyweight Mamelodi Sundowns, though he has received on many occasions very good offers from the Middle East.

Onyango told IOL: “There has been an opportunity for me to go and play in Arab countries but I just declined the offer because I’m okay and happy at Sundowns.”

He added: “Here they’ve cared about me even when I wasn’t playing, they’ve helped and believed in me, I really can’t just abandon them because I’m going to get $2000 in Asia.”

Dennis Onyango has had a good spell at Mamelodi Sundowns where he joined in 2011 from Mpumalanga Black Aces.

Onyango, 34, has won the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title on four occasions, he has two Telcom Knockout Cups to his name, a Nedbank Cup and mostly recently, he and Mamelodi Sundowns conquered Africa to win the the CAF Champions League trophy.

“Am around people who believe in me, why can’t I just stay here and finish my career, other than flying out to start a new life altogether.” Onyango noted.

Onyango, who won the 2016 African Player Based in Africa has thanked Mamelodi Sundowns for the support the club has had on him during his difficult moments.

“When I lost my dad, the club has been with me, when I had issues with my wife and son, the club has been with me, the club has always showed me love and support during all these difficult moments in my career, why should I abandon and leave them now?”

“Relocating my wife and kids is going to be difficult, having been in South Africa for the past 14 years. It will be difficult to start afresh especially when I’m not going to stay long.”

“I don’t think anyone will give me a five-year contract – it might be two years. Why should I relocate because I want more money? I need my family to be comfortable as well,” Onyango highlighted.

The Uganda captain in February 2019 renewed his contract with reigning Champions in South Africa, Mamelodi Sundowns, where he put to paper a new four-year and a half contract extension.

Fingers crossed as to what the Cloorkop goalkeeper and inspirational leader will do in 2023 when he turn 37. Will he hand his gloves or prefer to follow in the footsteps of Legendary goalkeepers like Buffon, El-Hadary and others?

Former Asante Kotoko midfielder, Yusif Chibsah has revealed businessman Kwame Osei ‘Despite’ promised each player of the team a house if they had won the 2004 CAF Confederation Cup.

The Porcupine Warriors lost the trophy to their arch-rivals on penalties at home despite opening the scoring in both legs.

The first leg ended 1-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium, and after another 1-1 draw in the return tie at the Baba Yara Stadium, the Phobians won the inaugural edition of the competition 8-7 on penalties.

Reliving the moment on GTV Sports Plus on Sunday, Chibsah revealed he and his teammates were promised a house each to win the trophy.

”Do you know what we missed for failing to win the cup ? Despite promised each player a house and a 10 million (GHS 1,000) each,” Chibsah said on the Time With Our Captains Show.

”Looking back at the game we should have buried the game in the first half

Chibsah was joined on the panel by former teammate Charles Taylor while Hearts of Oak had Bernard Don Bortey, Lawrence Adjah Tetteh and Amankwah Mireku.

COVID-19: Adom Frimpong wants football season cancelled

0

Asante Kotoko midfielder, Kwame Adom Frimpong has called for the 2019/2020 Ghana football season in light of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic globally.

The novel disease has forced the suspension of the domestic top-flight as government has placed ban on social gatherings.

Adom Frimpong however, disagrees with those suggesting that the League should be played behind closed doors.

“We should declare the season null and void,” begs Adom Frimpong. “We are faced with a deadly virus and our focus must be on saving lives than football. It would be better to call off the season and wait until the pandemic is over before we start a new one than to play in an empty stadium,”he told Kotoko Express App.

“Here in Ghana, clubs find it very difficult to cope when made to play behind closed doors so holding the remaining games without the fans should not even be an option.”

“Football is nothing without the fans at the stadia,” Adom Frimpong continues. “The fans will not even go the stadia if authorities even decide to allow them because they will fear to contract the virus. We must focus on saving human lives and not put people at risk because of the game.”

With a careful assessment of how players have fared in the league since the 1993/1994 season (the maiden season of the Ghana Premier League), Coach Ibrahim Tanko has named his all-star team in an exclusive interview with Pulse Ghana.

READ MORE: Dong Bortey, Ishmael Addo left out of Coach J.E Sarpong’s all-time GPL XI

With the exception of Kofi Deblah and Shilla Illiasu the rest of the nine players in his team had stints with Hearts of Oak.

Notable among the list were the Hearts of Oak attacking quartet of Ishmael Addo, Emmanuel Osei Kuffour, Charles Taylor and Dong Bortey who dominated the Ghana Premier League for many years.

Below is the finest Ghana Premier League XI as announced by Ibrahim Tanko in an exclusive interview with Pulse Ghana

Sammy Adjei

He is one of the safest pair of hands the country has ever produced. He is a goalkeeper of great elasticity in post.

Sammy Adjei was very instrument as Hearts of Oak won the CAF Champions League in 2000. One of his best games in between the sticks was at Al Ahly in a one-all draw at Cairo. It was a game between Sammy Adjei and Al Ahly, yet he made several point-blank saves to salvage a crucial one point for the Phobians.

He was at his best throughout the Champions League campaign and they defeated Esperance in both the home and the away fixtures to become Africa champions for the first time. Hearts of Oak of Oak who had won the League and the FA Cup clinched a historic treble.

Sammy Adjei helped the Phobians to win three consecutive league titles and two FA Cups in addition to the CAF Champions League and the CAF Super Cup.

Sammy Adjei also became an integral part of the national team during the period.

Amankwa Mireku

Osofo as he was affectionately called by his playing mate, marshalled the left full-back position very well, despite being a right-footed player.

He combined both attacking and tracking back very effectively to offer more in attack as well as quickly drawing back to provide stability to the defence.

Amankwah Mieku won six league titles with Hearts of Oak and he was instrumental as the Phobians emerged as African Champions in 2000 in a year they won every single title they competed for.

Mireku again captained Hearts of Oak as they won the CAF Confederations Cup against their bitterest rivals Asante Kotoko in January 2005.

The former Hearts of Oak skipper’s performance and consistency earned him a call-up to the Black Stars and he became a key member of the team from 2000 to 2004.

Shilla Illiasu

Shilla Illiasu had a good reading of the ball and very difficult to beat, providing cover for the goalkeeper.

He had a successful career with King Faisal and he rose to prominence after he joined Asante Kotoko in 2005.

Illiasu helped Asante Kotoko to win the Ghana Premier League in 2005 and after establishing himself as a solid centre bak on the domestic scene he was handed an opportunity to join Black Stars.

In the 2006 FIFA World Cup whiles with the Porcupine Warriors he emerged as one of the stars of the tournament, combining very well with John Mensah as Ghana earned the results against Czech Republic and the USA, before losing in the quarter-finals against Brazil.

Agyemang Duah

Rambo, as he was nicknamed, was a solid centre back and very difficult one to beat.

Agyemang Duah won the Ghana Premier League title with AshGold and Hearts of Oak and before that he was part of the Kotoko team that won the 1993 league.

Agyemang Duah also played in three CAF Champions League final. He was at the losing end at Kotoko in 1993 and AshGold in 1997, but he finally clinched the trophy with Hearts of Oak in 2000.

Agyemang Duah was a regular member of the Black Stars in his prime in the Ghana Premier League, representing Ghana in the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In midfield, Ibrahim Tanko gave the nod to four ex-Hearts of Oak players: he paired Adjah Tetteh and Emmanuel Osei Kuffour in the central midfield, whereas he deployed Dong Bortey and Charles Taylor to the right and left midfield, respectively.

Adjah Tetteh

He was a workaholic midfielder for the Hearts of Oak. Tetteh was ball winner and his retention of the ball was superb.

Adjah Tetteh Tetteh’s presence always eased pressure on the centre backs by doing o a lot of interceptions in the heart of the midfield.

He joined Hearts of Oak from Dawu Youngsters and played a key role as the Phobians won the Ghanaian topflight league six times.

He played a crucial role as Hearts of Oak clinched a treble in 2000, winning the CAF Champions league, league and the FA Cup, before winning the Super Cup in 2001.

The central midfielder also won the CAF Confederations Cup with the Accra giants scoring the all-important late minute equalizer that threw the final into a penalty shootout against Asante Kotoko.

Charles Taylor

Charles Taylor was a delight to watch with his effective dribbles and runs. Many rates him as one of the best dribblers Ghana has produced in the past 20 years. He added goal scoring to his play emerging as joint GPL top scorer in 2002 with 18 goals.

After joining Hearts of Oak from Great Olympics, he won three Ghana Premier League titles, before moving to Kotoko in 2003. The mercurial midfielder helped the Kumasi giants to win their first Ghana Premier League in his debut season, following a controversial transfer which prolonged for some time before it went through for GHC 120,000 (Still a Ghanaian record for a transfer between two clubs on the domestic scene). He was part of the Hearts of Oak team that swept everything in 2000, winning the CAF Champions League, Ghana Premier League and the FA Cup, which was a historic treble.

Bernard Dong Bortey

Dong Bortey ‘the Serial killer’ was remarkable in the Ghana Premier League and the toast of most Hearts of Oak fans. He carved a niche for himself as a big-game player, especially his influence in Hearts games against their rivals Kotoko was second to none.

Dong Bortey joined the Phobians from Tema Ghapoha in 2001. He became key in the scheme of things of the Accra giants and helped them to win the league in 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006/2007 and 2008/2009.

Bortey also had a short stint with Aduana Stars.

Emmanuel Osei Kuffour

Emmanuel Osei Kuffour is arguably the greatest player in the Ghana Premier League history. He started playing in the GPL in the 1993/1994 with Dwarfs as a defender before he was converted into an attacking midfielder. He featured in the GPL until the 2007/2008 season when he won the league with Asante Kotoko, making him the longest-serving player in the professional league.

He won five league titles with Hearts of Oak and a league title with Asante Kotoko, making him one of the most decorated players in the GPL.

Kuffour’s leadership qualities were awesome and had the opportunity to captain the Black Stars during the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He was a schemer cum scorer as well. Hearts of Oak owe their 2000 CAF Champions League title to him – he scored 10 goals to win the top scorer of the competition.

Coach Tankoh settled on perhaps the two best goal scorers the Ghana Premier League has ever seen Kofi Deblah and Ishmael Addo.Ibrahim Tanko PHOTO CREDIT: via pulse.com.gh:Ibrahim Tanko

Kofi Deblah

He had eyes for goals and he possessed the abiliy to torment the opposing goal area.

Deblah was a key player of the Goldfields team that won the Ghana Premier League three consecutive times to open professional with such a great dominance- 1993/1994, 1994/1995 and 1995/1996.

He won the Ghana Premier League goal king in two consecutive seasons.

Kofi Deblah was a regular feature in the the Black Stars during his heydays at Goldfields now AshGold.

Ishmael Addo

He is the greatest scorer in the history of the Ghana Premier League (GPL). Ishmael Addo was a striker who was the ball playing type, but he had a good vision at goal and his positioning was second to none in the opponents’ goal area.

He won the Ghana Premier League top scorer in 1999 after being promoted from the junior side, bagging 16 goals.

Addo registered 19 goals the following season and in 2001 he recorded 22 goals which is the highest goal tally in a single GPL season.

He has paid his dues at the national team level. In 1999 during the FIFA U-17 World Cup he emerged as the top scorer as Ghana placed third and he was also had the opportunity to play for the Black Stars, but, he failed to translate his devastating form at club level to the national team.

Procedure

The Ghana Premier League all-time XI is a campaign by Pulse Ghana to settle on the finest players who have paid their dues to domestic football in the country since the inception of professional football on 19th December 1993.

Ghana Sports Historian and Statistician Thomas Freeman Yeboah in his research came up with about 50 players who have been outstanding in the Ghanaian topflight league from 1993 up to date.

The list was presented to Coaches, retired and current football administrators and journalists and other well-meaning sports enthusiasts to help the exercise.

They were, however, at liberty to include any player whom they consider worthy of a place in the team, though not captured in the pool of prospective players for the Ghana Premier League all-time

Criteria

(1) Players who have excelled during the period from 19 December 1993 to date were considered.

(2) Contribution to teamwork

(3) Individual brilliance

(4)Consistency

(5) Silverware won by the players

(6) Impact and influence

(7) National team assignment for the player during this period.

It should be noted that the views of about ten renowned coaches, journalists, football administrators have been taken into consideration in our quest to establish the Ghana Premier League finest XI of all-time.

The next Ghana Premier League all-time XI will come from coach erstwhile Technical Director of the Black Stars Oti Akenteng.
