The Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Nana Obiri Boahen has expressed shock over the $25,000 monthly salary of Black Stars coach CK Akonnor.

The former Asante Kotoko and Hearts Of Oak was named the Black Stars head coach in January this year in a two-year deal, replacing Kwasi Appiah, whose contract was not renewed after expiring in December 2019.

Akonnor’s predecessor James Kwasi Appiah was on a monthly salary of $35,000.

And, although Akonnor’s monthly salary is about 30 per cent less than what Appiah was receiving, the outspoken politician believes that something must be done about since football administrators are even struggling to maintain their clubs.

“CK Akonnor’s salary is very huge. The $25,000 is too much. I don’t know if it’s because I don’t have money but I feel it’s a big money. Even the total amount of salaries received by players of Asante Kotoko or Hearts may not be up to the $25,000,” Lawyer Obiti Boahen told Hello FM.

“Sometimes we should consider those running clubs in Ghana. How much does Agama of Bechem United and Nana Kwame of Berekum Chelsea get from their respective clubs every month? We need to be very fair looking at where we are coming from.

He continued, “Honestly, speaking that money is a big money. We need people who are bold. We must be bold to call a spade a spade Why are we even quoting his salary in dollars since we are told not to trade in the country in that currency?

“I think they are not being fair to us at all. A good number of people running football in Ghana are suffering, you can ask Grusah. I’m saying that even the likes of Kwame Kyei who have money will tell you how difficult it is to run the football here.

He also said it is against the laws of the land to pay the coach in dollars.

“It’s against the law to pay CK Akonnor in dollars, and secondly when you convert that $25,000 its big money and a good number of coaches will take that money.”

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah has confirmed that Akonnor has verbally agreed to a pay-cut due to the Coronavirus.

The Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) Nana Obiri Boahen has pleaded with the Ghana Football Association Executive Council to lift the ban placed on second-tier side Techiman City.

Techiman City Football Club on Friday, August 28, 2020, issued a Writ against the GFA and filed an Ex-parte Motion to place an interlocutory injunction on the recently held 26th Ordinary Congress of the Football Association.

As a result, the Executive Council of the Ghana FA in the exercise of its powers under Article 39(n) of the GFA Statutes 2019 suspended Techiman City Football Club provisionally until the next Congress of the football governing body for violating the Statutes of the Association.

Reacting to the issue, the Sunyani-based outspoken politician implored Ghana to rescind their decision due to the financial burden on the clubs as a result of the COVID-19 breakout.

According to the law luminary,  the Ghana FA, after freeing Techiman City should make it clear to the rest of the clubs that any member that violates the rules and regulations of the association will not be pardoned.

Speaking to Kumasi-based Hello FM, he said, “I’m not the lawyer for Techiman City but yesterday[Friday] I read the letter from the Ghana FA regarding their suspension.

“First of all, the content said that they had been suspended until the next Congress but did they[GFA] give them the opportunity to be heard? In law, there’s something called Audi alteram partem if you don’t give him the opportunity to be heard the person can also take you to court.

“But I think coming from COVID-19 and trying to reconcile to bring the game to a certain level, the Ghana FA should pardon Techiman for the offence committed and inform the other clubs to take a cue from it that the next offender will not be forgiven.

“The clubs have really struggled because of the COVID-19 and for Techiman City to stay away until the next Congress it will be difficult for them.

“I want to apologise on behalf of the Micky Charles and Techiman City. The GFA should forgive them and lift the ban, ” he concluded.

The Ghana Football Association has appointed Julius Ben Emunah as Club Licensing Manager.

The Takoradi based football administrator replaces Emmanuel Newton Dasoberi who resigned on September 14, 2020.

Emunah is currently the GFA’s Safety and Security Officer and Secretary to the Safety and Security Committee.

The former Secretary and administrative head of the Western Regional Football Association is also a CAF Safety and Security Officer. He was instrumental in the 2019/2020 CAF Inter-Club competitions handling matches in Nigeria.

He served as Deputy Administrative Manager for the National Sports Authority in the Central Region for about two years before moving to the Western Regional capital.

He holds a CAF Safety and Security Officers training workshop certificate and a CAF National Safety and Security officers training workshop certificate respectively.

Julius Ben Emunah read Environmental Science at the University of Cape Coast. He has also previously worked for Yes FM, Cape FM and the EIB Network’s Empire FM.

Black Stars trainer, CK Akonnor has verbally agreed to a salary cut due to the COVID–19 pandemic, Ghana’s Minister for Youth and Sports has disclosed.

The ex-international took charge of the senior national team  in January 2020 on a $25,000 monthly salary but has yet to be paid any money.

But Akonnor, who his yet to oversee his first game, has been informed that due to strained finances the government cannot remunerate him fully.

In an interview on Adam TV, Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah claims that after initial talks Akonnor is already on the same page with his outfit.

“Regarding the CK Akonnor situation the truth is we have already engaged the GFA on the matter.

“We are in the COVID period and can’t pay him the full amount of his salary. It is not possible.

“We are negotiating for a whether it will be a 40, 50 or 60 percent payment of the contract.

“When I first mentioned the matter to CK Akonnor he was receptive because he is a Ghanaian and knows the current situation. All that is left is for the GFA to agree a figure.

“CK Akonnor has told me that he understands the current state of affairs and has accepted the slash in salary.

“He has accepted that he cannot be paid in full,” Hon. Asiamah disclosed.

Meanwhile, Akonnor is expected to lead the Black Stars for his first game when they take on Mali in an international friendly scheduled for Turkey on October 9, 2020.
