Turkey-based duo Caleb Ekuban and Joseph Paintsil land late call-ups ahead of Black Stars friendly matches

Turkey-based striker Caleb Ekuban and JosephPaintsil have been handed an invite to the Ghana squad for the first time since the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament in Egypt.

On Sunday, Ekuban received the late call-up for the Black Stars international friendly matches against Mali and Qatar later this week as a result of the withdrawals of trio Richard Ofori (goalkeeper), Lumor Agbenyenu (left-back) and John Antwi (striker) who were denied travelling to Turkey for the match due to visa and work permit issues from their respective bases.

Ghana take on the Eagles and Maroons on October 9 and 12 respectively in the city of Antalya.

And it is understood that for proximity purposes, head coach CK Akonnor, in finding replacements for the trio, decided to look within the host country to invite other available Ghanaian players for the match.

The Trabzonspor striker thus fills in the void created by the unavailability of Egypt-based John Antwi.

Ekuban missed his kick in the penalty shootouts that saw Tunisia deny Ghana a place in the quarterfinal of the 2019 Afcon. He had since been overlooked for subsequent international duties.

Paintsil is on a season-long loan move at Ankaragucu from Belgian side Genk.

The former Tema Youth talisman has played three times for his new side in the Turkish Super Lig.

The Black Stars are expected to hold their first training session on Monday, October 5 – one which will also mark as the first under coach CK Akonnoer and his technical team since their appointment in January.

Ghana will be using the Mali and Qatar games as preparatory tests for their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations doubleheader with Sudan scheduled for November.

Goalkeeper Richard Ofori will miss Ghana’s friendly games against Mali and Qatar.

The South Africa based shot stopper who has been Ghana’s safest pair of hands since 2016, is been ruled out of the games because his work permit has expired and would require at least, two weeks for it to be renewed. Coach C.K Akonnor, now has two goalkeepers, Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Razak Abalora, available for selection.

John Antwi

The Pyramid’s FC top marksman is one of the players who wouldn’t make it to Turkey following difficulties to secure a visa to travel to Antalya. John’s work permit has also expired and would need not less than two weeks to secure a new one.

Lumor Agbebyenu

The Sporting Lisbon left back who played on loan at Real Mallorca last season could also not apply for visa due to work permit complications.

Kudus Mohammed

The Ajax Amsterdam midfielder is a doubt for the games, but the GFA is insisting that he travels to Turkey on Tuesday for assessment. The former Right to Dream Academy man was left out of the Ajax squad for Sunday’s Dutch League game against FC Groningen after sustaining an injury in training on Thursday.

Meanwhile Head Coach C.K Akonnor has handed late call ups to Turkey based duo, Caleb Ekuban (Trabzonspor) and Joseph Paintsil (Ankaragucu). Ekuban has been drafted in to replace John Antwi, while, Paintsil replaces Lumor Agbenyenu.

Yahaya Mohammed reveals season ambitions

The Ghana Premier League star wants to continue his impressive form from last season as he hopes to fulfil his aims for the season

Aduana Stars attacker, Yahaya Mohammed has disclosed a set of targets for the upcoming 2020-21 Ghana Premier League season.

The 32-year-old has been impressive since joining the Fire boys. The former Asante Kotoko striker placed second in the top scorers chart in the truncated 2019-20 Ghana Premier League season.

Prior to the commencement of the cancelled league, the lanky striker targeted 21 goals, but netted 11 goals in 15 games and earned a Black Stars’ call-up as well.

According to Yahsya Mohammed, his target for the new season slated for November 13, 2020 is unchanged.

“My target for the upcoming season is still unchanged. Last season, my aim was to win the goal King, win the league with Aduana Stars, earn a Black Stars call-up and if I get a lucrative deal outside I probably move, ” he told Hello FM.

“And by God’s grace, I nearly achieved all had it not been for the outbreak of the COVID-19.”

Football activities were frozen in mid-March due to the Coronavirus breakout.

However, during the 17th address on the deadly disease by H.E Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, the ban on football was lifted and was approved to restart in October 30.

The Ghana Football Association in consultation with stakeholders have tentatively set November 13,2020 to commence the new season.

Aduana Stars forward, Yahaya Mohammed has advised local football fans to eschew insult to motivate some old stars to return to the Ghana Premier League.

Some Ghanaian players who normally return to relaunch their career go through a lot. They are mostly accused of no tangible reasons.

It would be recalled that Laryea Kingston returned to the local top-flight after cancelling his contract with Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem.

He rejoined his former club Hearts of Oak in a two-and-half season but fell out with the club.

Kingston was handed an indefinite suspension for going AWOL and allegedly beating up the club’s accountant – a report he vehemently denied.

The likes of Nii Odartey Lamptey and Baffour Gyan got insulted on the field of play when they returned to play for Kotoko.

And, according to Yahaya Mohammed, the supporters need much education about the issue.

He explained that the presence of the old stars will assist the organizers of the domestic league to earn more sponsorship.

“It’ll help the Ghana league in diverse ways. Why can’t Gyan play in the local league if players like Kaka and Ronaldinho went home to play in the Brazilian league? Their presence will help in the acquisition of sponsorships, ” he told Hello.

“I can tell you that the day Asamoah Gyan will sign for a local club, the following week, we’ll get a huge sponsorship for the league.

“Look at where Gyan has reached in his football career but you will see someone insulting him. It’s time the supporters comport themselves.

“The insult should be in a professional way. We should educate the fans in order to have most of the old players in our league.

“It will make the league exciting and easy to get sponsorship as well. At the long round, everyone including the fans will benefit, ” he added.

Inter Allies star Victorien Adebayor joins HB Koge

We are excited to announce that our talismanic forward Victorien Adje Adebayor has joined HB Koge, which is part of Capelli Sport’s global network of clubs.

The Nigerien star man joins the Danish 1st Divison side on a three-year deal after completing his medical.

He left Ghana last night and arrived in Denmark today and is expected to immediately team up and integrate into the HB Koge team.

Adebayor’s match displays and goal returns were one of the highlights during his stay in the Ghana Premier League.

“We have high expectations for Victorien Adebayor. When we pick up such a high-profile player, we also believe that he can become a crucial figure with us.”

”Adebayor is an exceptional player who can cover all places in the offense. Both on the edges, centrally behind the front attacker and all the way in front.”

”He has speed in his feet and some technical skills that allow him to put his direct opponent, and then he has a strong left leg “, says HB Køge director Per Rud, who has been to Ghana and seen the new HB Køge player in action, just as there has also been good intelligence from Henrik Lehm. 

Henrik Lehm, who has a past as head coach at HB Køge, was earlier this year – until the corona shutdown in March – head coach at Inter Allies FC.

He will play alongside some familiar faces who are with the club, Abdul Nassiru Hamzah, Effiong Nsungusi Jnr, Kwabena Kyeremateng and recently, Frank Assinki.

Christopher Nettey returns to Asante Kotoko for preseason

The budding talented right-back has arrived in Kumasi to join his teammates for preseason.

Asante Kotoko defender Christopher Nettey who missed the club’s first phase of their preseason exercise has arrived to rejoin Coach Maxwell Konadu’s side. The 22-year-old missed the first phase of their preseason exercise due to contractual issues.

 Asante Kotoko has reportedly no paid his transfer fee to his former club, Attram De Visser Academy which they decided to block him from him to join the club ahead of the 2020/21 season campaign. He made 13 appearances for Asante Kotoko and won three NASCO man of the match awards in the 2019/20 Ghana Premier League season which was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Former Kumasi Asante Kotoko SC striker, Sogne Yacouba scored his first goal of the season for Young Africans SC in the Tanzanian Premier League on Saturday.

Angolan star Carlos Sténio Fernandes Guimarães do Carmo ‘Carlinho’ put the host 1-0 up in the second half on the 48th minutes after a goalless first 45 minutes of the match.

Haruna Niyonzima scored four minutes later to make it 2-0 for Yanga SC in front of the home supporters.

Four minutes after the hour mark, the former Kotoko Burkinabe star, Yacouba grabbed his first league goal and his team’s third to make the score 3-0 to his team.

Yanga won the game by 3-0 scoreline against Coastal Union as Yacouba nets his first league goal of the season in the Tanzanian Premier League.

OFFICIAL: Asante Kotoko sign Patrick Asmah from Italian club Atalanta

Record holders of the Ghana Premier League, Asante Kotoko have announced the signing of defender, Patrick Asmah.

Patrick Asmah, formerly of Italian Serie A side, Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio joins the Porcupine Warriors on a three-year deal. 

The 24-year-old after completing his mandatory medical exams joined Asante Kotoko after ending his three-year stay with Atalanta. 

After signing for the Serie A club in 2016, Patrick Asmah played his entire three-year contract on loan to US Avellino, US Salernitana and Slovakian Fortuna Liga club FK Senica. 

He becomes the third signing of the Porcupines after Yusif Mubarik and Emmanuel Keyeke.

The club took to Twitter to announce the signing of Patrick Asmah.

It has been a period of transition in many areas at Asante Kotoko SC. From the hierarchy to the management, all the way through the playing staff, there have been many comings and many goings at the club- but two notable movements include the arrival of Nana Yaw Amponsah as the Chief Executive Officer of the club and the departure of George Amoako.

With the playing staff, Matthew Kelvin Andoh, Richard Arthur, Augustine Sefa, Douglas Owusu Ansah and Abass Mohammed have been released and the likes of Emmanuel Sarkodie, Kwame Opoku, Mubarik Yusif have been signed on to strengthen the depth of Maxwell Konadu’s squad. 

They aren’t done though!  The Porcupine Warriors announced the capture of Karela FC midfielder Emmanuel Keyekeh after the player passed medical on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old arrives at the club following a spell in Anyinase which saw him emerge as the finest to strut their stuff down the CAM Park midfield since their promotion into the Ghanaian topflight division. 

The immense goalscoring exploits of his teammates often grabbed the headlines, but the platform from which they could achieve greatness was one crafted and assembled and revolutionised by the midfielder. He left his mark on the club in three long, but spellbindingly sweet seasons that brought with it levels of success that has since become to the norm in the country.

However, what can fans realistically expect from the midfielder? Let’s break it down, shall we?

Emmanuel Keyekeh is one of a kind. His style of play is graceful, he reads the game beautifully, and his lanky frame only works to enhance his outstanding talent and make him even more impossible to catch with the ball at his feet. With a formidable attack comprising; William Opoku Mensah, Charles Diawisie Taylor and Solomon Sarfo Taylor, it would not have flowed as smoothly without the engineering work of Keyekeh.

His contributions elevating the club into previously unknown heights. He didn’t score goals at the same rate as the aforementioned players, but yes, he did everything else. Except play in goal. For while the aforementioned players scored, Keyekeh just beat them. He wore them down. He sucked the life out of them.

His teammates laid the final straws that broke down the opposition, but the key was the million other straws that Keyekeh had laid underneath. The hundreds of tackles, passes, drops of the shoulder and headed clearances that sapped the life out of the opposition, and allowed his team to go on and win games. When you watch Emmanuel Keyekeh play, you will surely love him. 

Possessing an appreciable height and with an unusually neat technique for a player of his age, he is regarded as one of the best volantes in the country. His arrival at the club could be the reason why the Porcupine Warriors are dragging their feet with the acquisition of Justice Blay.

Keyekeh’s an edge of your seat footballer who you’d genuinely pay to watch even if he’s half-fit and can only muster a 15-minute cameo. His variation, unpredictability and immense ball-manipulation make him one of the most press-resistant and creative players around – assists don’t define creativity – while he’s able to penetrate defensive lines at will with crisp and perfectly weighted vertical passes as well as graceful but equally powerful driving runs. 

Whether Konadu deploys a 4-3-1-2 or 4-3-3, the man at the base of the midfield is crucial to the side as the player who dictates the tempo of the game- in Keyekeh, the gaffer has one of the best in the business.

Given Keyekeh’s tactical intelligence and work rate, there is no reason to doubt that he may enjoy a successful future at the club.
