Liberty Professionals striker Emmanuel Paga recovers from injury ahead of Legon Cities clash

Liberty Professionals striker, Emmanuel Paga has recovered from an injury he picked up a few weeks ago.

Paga sustained an injury after the Scientific Soccer Lads’ 1-1 stalemate with Eleven Wonders on match-day 3 of the 2020-21 Ghana Premier League at the Carl Reindolf Park.

But the striker has returned to full training after a short spell in the treatment room ahead of their week 7 league game against Legon Cities on Sunday, January 3, 2021.

Liberty Professionals secured the services of the youngster from lower-tier side Vision FC ahead of the ongoing season.

Although he is yet to score in the games he played before being injured, he assisted his side’s last-minute goal against Elmina Sharks which aided them to pick a point on the road.

Liberty Professionals occupy the 11th position on the 18-club league table after 6 games.

Ghana coach Akonnor receives two months of his unpaid salary

Coach CK Akonnor finally received the first two of his unpaid salary entitlement as head coach of the Ghana senior national team from the Ministry of Sports just before Christmas, it has emerged.

The Black Stars trainer had gone unpaid since assuming duties in January this year.

Earlier in September, Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah, in an interview, disclosed that the delay had been due to financial difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and went on to claim that “the coach has agreed in principle to accept a salary cut.”

But any action of payment delayed until December.

“CK [Akonnor] has been paid two months. He received it before Christmas and would have another two months next week [in the new year]. That’s what we’ve been told by the Sports Ministry.

“The Ministry had hoped to clear six months of the arrears but unfortunately it seems they were overstretched hence paying the two months for the time being,” Henry Asante, the Communications Director for the Ghana Football Association disclosed on Kessben FM Tuesday.

CK Akonnor is reportedly on a $25,000-a-month salary as Black Stars coach.

Marcus Rashford scored a later winner as Manchester United beat Wolves 1-0 on Tuesday night to move to second on the Premier League table.

Coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made six changes to the side that drew 2-2 away to Leicester on Boxing Day, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who missed the last to matches with fitness issues, recalled to the starting team.

Alex Telles was also given the nod on the other side, and there was a place for Nemanja Matic, who lined up alongside Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes in midfield.

Mason Greenwood also started, same as Edinson Cavani, who came off the bench to make an immediate impact against Leicester.

The visitors were the better side in the opening half and came close to finding the opener on a number of occasions.

First, Rashford lost the ball inside Wolves’ half in the 10th minute, and the visitors piled numbers forward as Traore managed to slip past a couple to feeds Neto on the left, but his right-footed shot was straight at De Gea.

Wolves came back in the 14th minute again as sloppy play led to a mix-up at the back as Bailly lost out, with an undecided De Gea rushing out before retreating, allowing Traore to cross for Neves on the edge of the box, but his fierce effort was beaten away by De Gea.

Wolves then hit the crossbar in the 34th minute as Moutinho’s deep free-kick from the right was headed goalwards by Saiss, but it unluckily bounced off the top of the bar.

United though had a chance of their own in the 35th minute and it fell to Bruno Fernandes, but he failed to beat the keeper from close range following a perfect ball from Mason Greenwood.

The second half was an evenly balanced affair with few clear-cut chances from both sides.

The talking point of the match however came in the 71st minute as Cavani put the ball in the back of the net, but it was ruled out for offside.

With the match seemingly headed for a draw, United managed to find a way through deep in added time.

Fernandes’ long ball over the top was collected by Rashford, who turned and drove into the penalty area and took aim at goal, with the shot taking a huge deflection off a Saiss and into the net for the winning goal.

The win meant United moved to second on the table with 32 points, two points off league leader Liverpool, who play on Wednesday night.

Akonnor vows to end Ghana’s Afcon trophy drought

Ghana’s senior national team head coach, Charles Kwablan Akonnor has asserted that his topmost priority is to end the team’s long Afcon title drought.

Ghana, four-time winners of the prestigious tournament, have not been able to clinch it since winning the 1982 edition in Libya.

However, the Africa powerhouse has been to the final three times since then losing twice to Côte d’Ivoire on penalties in 1992 and 2015 respectively as well as a defeat to Egypt by a lone goal in Angola in 2010.

But speaking to Kumasi-based Kessben FM, Akonnor vowed to end Ghana’s 38 years trophy drought.

“My aim and mission are to end the long trophy drought of the Black Stars and win the AFCON tournament for Ghana, ” he said.

The former Kumasi Asante Kotoko SC and Accra Hearts of Oak coach, called on Ghanaians to rally behind the team to help execute the set goals.

“Winning the Afcon won’t come easy at all and I, therefore, urge all Ghanaians to come on board and offer their endless support to the Black Stars in our quest to win the coveted Afcon trophy again.”

Ghana has nine points from four matches in the 2021 Afcon qualifiers and would secure a place in the finals if they avoid defeat in their last two games against South Africa and Sao Tome & Principe.

Asante Kotoko show interest in former midfielder Jackson Owusu

Asante Kotoko have been in touch with the representatives of former midfielder Jackson Owusu over a possible return to the club, according to Myfabulousonline.com.

The Reds already have a wealth of midfield options including Adom Frimpong, Muniru Sulley, Emmanuel Sarkodie, Emmanuel Keyekeh etc but have failed to gel after the departure of Justice Blay which has led to more calls from some fans to augment the defensive midfield role to give balance to the team.

However, the Porcupines have made a move to gauge the possibility of taking Jackson Owusu who has been a free agent since leaving Kenyan side Gor Mahia earlier this year on a short term deal when the January transfer window opens and have been in touch with his representatives.

Our sources around the player revealed that, his representatives have told Kotoko that they would have to inform the player whether he will be willing to return to the club and a response will be given the Reds in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the 32-year-old in June this year told Kotoko Express App that, he would welcome a return to the Porcupines should he be approached.

The defensive midfielder joined the Porcupines in 2015 and left in 2019. He commanded a regular role in the team, winning the FA Cup under Coach Steven Polack.

Legon Cities FC donate to Potters House Orphanage

Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities FC have donated hugely to Potters House Orphanage in the Greater Accra region as part of their good works in this festive season.

This is the second time the Dodowa-based orphanage are receiving donation from the football field having already gotten Christmas presents from Ghana youth international Najeeb Yakubu last week.

The Royals- represented by General Manager Mr. Martin Agboyo, Spokesperson Kwame Dwomoh-Agyemang and other club officials offered food and other items worth thousands of cedis to the kids.

This donation is presented mainly to help the needy, orphans and the less privilege to also smile, enjoy and have fun as the year draws closer to an end.

Having exhibited this great gesture, Legon Cities FC will very soon resume training and start preparing themselves for the rest of the matches having had a poor start of the season so far.

They travel to Dansoman on Sunday to take on Liberty Professionals in matchweek seven of the ongoing 2020/21 Ghana league season.

Manager of English Premier League side, Southampton, Ralph Hasenhuttl, has asserted Ghanaian defender, Mohammed Salisu, is the future of the club.

The 21-year-old defender joined the Premier League side in the summer transfer window from Spanish La Liga club, Real Valladolid.

But he is yet to feature in any game for the Saints since the move despite being named at the bench in their last five League games.

Hasenhuttl says he needed familiarity in his team to face Fulham on Saturday when an opportunity came for him to start Salisu in the absence of injured regular center-back, Jannik Vestergaard.

“For me, it was important [against Fulham] that I brought in a player who knew immediately what he was doing,” said Hasenhuttl.

“When you have three changes in the team, you need to have as much automatism as possible.

“I am sure Salisu could also play well, but it is important not to have too many changes and to keep our shape so that the players know exactly what they’re doing and I think we made the right decision.

“Salisu is the future of this club. It will take time. We know how long it takes for some players to step into the team,” he added as he chatted to HampshireLive.

“He has so much potential and [at Fulham] it was more important for me, as I said, not to unsettle the team. It would have been difficult, I think.

“I am ready happy that Sali is here, and he shows to me in every session that he can help up.”

Salisu had to deal with an injury setback at the start of the season since the £10.9m move and only featured in squads five match days ago.

Southampton boss, Ralph Hasenhuttl has mentioned that Mohammed Salisu could play his first game for the club in their FA Cup game against Shrewsbury Town next month.

The 21-year-old Ghanaian defender who completed a move to the Premier League in a deal reported to be around £10.9m is yet to make his debut for the club.

Salisu has been on the bench during the club’s last five Premier League games but was unused.

Salisu, meanwhile, watched on from the bench yet again but his chance will soon come, Hasenhuttl revealed, with the manager admitting that January’s visit of League One club Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup could be the perfect moment for the defender to introduce himself to Southampton supporters.

Cheetah FC become first Ghanaian club to own a club store

Abdul Hayye Yartey, president and owner of Cheetah FC, a division two club based in Kasoa on Sunday, December 27, 2020, received accolades from renowned football administrators during the official opening of the Cheetah Direct Store.

The Cheetah Direct Store will now see fans of Cheetah FC patronising the club’s replica jerseys, tracksuits, holes among other merchandise at the club’s office in Kasoa in the Central Region.

According to the president of the club, Cheetah Direct Store will also embark on delivery service across the country.

Cheetah FC becomes the first football club in Ghana to own a club store.

Mr Ashford Tettey Oku, former Ghana Premier League Board Chairman who also served as the Chairman for the event in his address commended Mr Yartey for his visionary role and the can-do spirit.

He also urged the leaders in the football business to emulate his branding skills.

“I’m very delighted to be here with you and I must also say that Mr Yartey through his Cheetah FC is taking Ghana football to the next level which needs serious attention. We need more of him to turn things around in the football world,” Mr Oku added

The Member of Parliament-elect for the Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui in her remarks pledged to collaborate with Cheetah FC to unearth more talents in her constituency.

“What I have seen today is commendable and I must collaborate with Mr Yartey and his Cheetah FC to nurture the hidden talents in the Awutu Senya West Constituency and I promise to make this laudable initiative happen in the first term in Parliament. Mr Yartey through his Cheetah FC is taking football to another level,” Madam Gizella stated.

On his part, Mr Robert Duncan, the Central Regional Football Association Chairman hailed the young football administrator Mr Abdul Hayye Yartey for setting the pace in the Central Region with his branding skills.

“It is a great honour to the Central Regional Football to have intellectuals like Mr Yartey who is always available to set a record as far as football is concerned. I will urge him to open his doors for others to tap into his branding skills so that together Central Regional football can be transformed”.

Mr Duncan further appealed to the MP-elect to join hands with stakeholders for the construction of more pitches in the region to help nurture talents.

Mr Abdul Hayye Yartey, bankroller and president of Cheetah FC in his remarks expressed his overwhelming gratitude to the President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt E.S Okraku and Ashford Tettey Oku for their unflinching support.

“As a Manchester United Fan, I planned to make this Cheetah Direct Shop Similar to Manchester United’s Shop in the UK. Everything about Cheetah FC will be available at the shop and all that you have to do is just a call and your request will be delivered to you as your doorsteps. It will also help us in data collection of our supporters. This project will draw the supporters closer to us,” Mr Yartey added.

Other dignitaries that graced the event were, veteran Coach J.E Sarpong; Ghanaian international Ishmael Yartey; SWAG General Secretary Charles Osei Assibey and representatives from Dreams FC.
