Asante Kotoko confirms Abdul Gazale as new head coach

Asante Kotoko has appointed Abdul Gazale as new head coach, a statement on Ghana Football Association’s website confirmed.

Following the sacking of Maxwell Konadu in December due to poor performances, Asante Kotoko informed GFA that CAF License “A” holder Coach Abdul Gazale has been appointed in an Acting Head Coach capacity until a substantive one is appointed.

Under the Duty To Notify requirement by clubs and the Club Licensing Process, Asante Kotoko SC notified the GFA of the interim appointment of Abdul Gazale and Johnson Smith as head coach and assistant respectively for a 30 day period on December 22, 2020.

On Wednesday, January 20, 2021, the club was reminded of the expiry of the interim appointment and the need to confirm a substantive appointment on or before the January 22, 2021 by the Association or risk being sanctioned.

Accordingly, the club has confirmed the appointment of Abdul Gazale as the head coach for both their domestic and continental competitions for the remainder of the 2020/21 season.

The club has however been asked to furnish the GFA with the contractual documents of this appointment in line with the club licensing regulations.

Coach Abdul Gazele is expected to be on the touch line when Kotoko host Algerian side ES Setif in the first leg of the final qualifying round of the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Inter Allies sign Nigerian attacker Kingsley Fidelis Kuku

Inter Allies have announced that they have completed the signing of Nigerian attacker Kingsley Fidelis Kuku on a loan deal.

The young winger, who has been training with the team for some time now, put to pen to paper on an initial six-month loan deal until the end of the season.

He joins from Nigeria National League side FC One Rockets and will be available for selection when the second window opens next week.

Kuku’s inclusion is expected to add goals, speed, energy, power and a great mentality to the team.

Karela United slapped with stadium ban after Kotoko defeat

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has taken notice of the violations of the GFA Covid-19 Matchday protocols that took place at the CAM Park, Aiyinase during the Matchday 13 Ghana Premier League game between Karela United FC and Asante Kotoko SC.

The Club has been referred to the GFA Disciplinary Committee at its next sitting for breaching the GFA Covid-19 Matchday protocols.

In a letter sent to the club, the GFA informed the Club that till the Disciplinary Committee determines their case, all home matches of the Club should be played behind closed doors.

As such only Ten (10) Management Members of Karela FC will be allowed at the stadium and Ten (10) Management Members for Away clubs during matches at CAM Park, Aiyinase.

Below are the immediate actions taken by the GFA after Karela’s breach of the Covid 19 protocols:

The GFA condemns, without any reservations, the violations of the GFA Matchday Protocols – Lack of Social Distancing, Number of Spectators etc – that took place at the CAM Park, Aiyinase. 2. That Karela FC, the home club, is immediately referred to the Disciplinary Committee concerning the breaches of the provisions of the approved GFA Matchday Protocols. The Disciplinary Committee has been tasked to sit on this matter expeditiously. 3. That until the case is fully determined, Kerela United FC shall play their Home matches behind Closed Doors at the CAM Park, Aiyinase. 4. That in playing behind Closed Doors at the CAM Park, Aiyinase, only Ten (10) Management Members of Karela United FC will be allowed at the stadium and Ten (10) Management Members for Away clubs. Only Twenty (20) media persons shall be allowed (to be accredited by the GFA). No other person shall in attendance. 5. That further actions (including but not limited to stadium ban) may be taken should there be any further violations of the GFA Matchday Protocols by Karela United FC. 6. That all other clubs are to take note and comply strictly with the GFA COVID-19 Matchday Protocols. The GFA wishes to sound a note of caution to all members (especially Premier League clubs, Division One League clubs, Women’s Premier League clubs, lower league clubs) and stakeholders that the Association will not hesitate to take action(s) to ensure strict adherence to the national COVID-19 Protocols as well as its approved GFA Matchday Protocols. The GFA wishes to assure all Ghanaians that the Association will continue to support the national fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The Association has urged all clubs to continue with the education of all their supporters and the public on the COVID-19 protocols. The Association will continue its engagements with all relevant stakeholders for the safety of all. Let us all be good Ambassadors.

CHAN 2020: Morocco beat Mali to win second title

Morocco won the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) for the second time by overcoming Mali’s bold challenge 2-0 in a thrilling final at Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde on Sunday night.

Two second-half headers by Abdelmouna Boutouil and captain Ayoub El Kaabi sealed the victory for the Atlas Lions in the tournament in Cameroon to hand them the title.

The Atlas Lions repeated the success on home soil three years ago by a margin that hardly looked possible as the Eagles stood toe-to-toe with the favourites for over an hour.

Houcine Ammouta’s side became the first country to win a second successive title in the tournament designed exclusively for home-based players.

Mali also felt their luck deserted them, but ultimately Morocco ran out victorious to revive the memories of the 4-0 victory over Nigeria in the CHAN 2018 final in Casablanca.

In one of the most exciting CHAN finals of the modern era, played out to a soundtrack of African drums, Mali and Morocco delivered an enthralling spectacle that brought delight to football enthusiasts in the continent over the quality on display.

Little separated the two sides in a well-contested first 15 minutes which lacked attacking display before El Kaabi ‘s header from a free-kick flashed across the face of the Mali goal.

Mali goalkeeper Djugui Diarra partly saved a tricky free-kick taken by Soufiane Rahimi from the edge of the box before defender Yacouba Doumbia cleared the danger.

The West Africans were not overawed by the situation and took advantage of the large space on the right side of the Atlas Lions defence vacated by the marauding Omar Namsaoui.

The Eagles should have opened the scoring when Mousaa Kone beat the Moroccan offside trap from the right side of the Morocco defence in the 23rd minute but goalkeeper Anas Zniti was quick off his mark to prevent the Stade Malien striker.

Mali grew in confidence and moments later talented playmaker Demba Diallo broke free after dispossessing Namsaoui before firing over the bar from 20 yards as they continued to pile the pressure on the North Africans.

Goalkeeper Diarra was called into action to confidently save a beautiful cross from Hafidi before a Diallo header in the 36th minute from a cross from the right went just wide.

The Moroccans regained their control of the game but the central defensive pair of Doumbia and Barou Sanogo dealt effectively with their long aerial balls before the break.

The Atlas Lions returned from the break and restarted the match in a similar fashion as they did at the start of the game by piling the pressure on the Malians.

Their calls for a penalty kick following a tackle on Rahimi in the box were subjected to a VAR review before the appeal was rejected.

In the 56th Issaka Samake sweetly taken free-kick met the head of Sadio Kanoute and the ball hit the upright to save the blushes of the North Africans.

A long ball from midfield in the 63rd minute eluded both Morocco central defenders of Soufiane Bouftini and Abdelmouna Boutouil allowing striker Diallo to steal in and fire but goalkeeper Zniti produced another excellent save with his legs.

Boutouil made amends six minutes later when he jumped highest to deliver a powerful header from Namsaoui’s corner kick from the right that beat goalkeeper Diarra to break the deadlock.

The Moroccans extended their lead ten minutes later under similar circumstances when captain Ayoud El Kaabi dived to head in Mohammed Ali Bemammer’s header from a corner kick from the right to spark wild celebrations from the bench of the Atlas Lions.

There was enough time for hardworking defender Isssaka Samake to be sent off for his second yellow card of the match, sealing the fate of the Malians and sparking wild jubilations by the North Africans.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has received reports of assault on players and officials of Real Tamale United FC who have sustained various degrees of injuries.

This unfortunate and unacceptable incident took place after their Matchday 6 Division One Zone One game played between Nsuatreman FC and Real Tamale United FC on Sunday, February 7, 2021 at the Twumasi Sports Complex at Nsuatre in the Bono Region.

The leadership of the Ghana Football Association is appalled and shocked at the behavior of the home fans.

The GFA condemns unconditionally the non-football behaviour and conduct of fans of the home team.

The Executive Council of the GFA has therefore decided to ban the venue indefinitely, as the Association continue to corporate with the Police to bring the perpetrators of this barbaric act to book.

Also, the GFA Prosecutor will review all the reports and press charges against the club and bring the matter before the Disciplinary Committee at its next sitting on Thursday, February 11, 2021.

In a related development, Wassaman Football Club has also been banned from playing at the Ejisu Okese Park.

This was after officials and fans of Wassaman FC held the referee’s hostage following the abrupt end of their match against Star Madrid FC.

As a result, Wassaman FC have been banned indefinitely from hosting matches at Ejisu. In both cases, the Competition Department is mandated to decide where the two clubs will host their home matches until further advised.

The Association wishes to send a strong warning to all clubs to abide by the Rules and Regulations of the GFA or risk deterrent sanctions.

Women’s League Week 4 wrap-up: Hasaacas Ladies pip Soccer Intellectuals as Berry Ladies maintain unbeaten run, Ashtown Ladies sink Fabulous Ladies

The Ghana Women’s Premier League is gradually gathering storm with Berry Ladies continuing their winning ways after 4 weeks of entertaining clashes.

Berry Ladies managed to defeat Police Ladies at their door step by 2 – 1.

A header from Faustina Akpo put Berry Ladies ahead but Victoria Williams Teye cancelled the lead before the break.

Berry Ladies kept breaking into the defence of Police Ladies and were awarded a penalty which was converted by Thelma Baffour Awuah to ensure their 4^th consecutive win as league leaders.

Hasaacas Ladies travelled to Ajumako Asassan Park to snatch all 3 points from Soccer Intellectuals kind courtesy a Milot Pokua’s late strike. They sit 2^nd on the league log with 10 points.

Thunder Queens welcomed Immigration Ladies to the Tema Community 8 Park to record a 1-1 draw, both teams are without a win after 4 matches.

The home side had the opener through in-form Elizabeth Oppong in the 46th minute but failed to defend the lead as Ruminatu Tahiru’s 56^th minute strike brought Immigration Ladies at par.

Elizabeth Oppong was named PoTM, taking her tally to 3 in 4 league games.

Kumasi Sports Academy lost 1-0 to visitors, Prisons Ladies, thanks to Abigail Tutuwaah’s 59^th-minute strike.
