DOL Zone One match-day 20 Preview: Unity FC host Bofo, Tamale City to test strength of RTU in derby, Nsoatreman FC welcome Steadfast FC

Zone One leaders Real Tamale United will square off with city rivals Tamale City Football Club on match day 20 of the Division One League at the Aliu Mahama stadium.

Tamale will come alive on Sunday as the two sides come face to face against each other in the biggest clash in the Zone. RTU have been lively throughout the campaign with scintillating football that has caught the attention of football fans in Zone One.

They sit at the top of the League table with 40 points – and a win on Sunday will put them in a good position to challenge for a Premier League return. Tamale City started the season in an explosive manner but have imploded in the last four weeks to drop to fifth place – 5 points behind the leaders and a defeat to their rivals with push them further down the table.

In other matches, Techiman City will play host to second place Berekum Arsenals at the Kintampo Rawlings Park.  Nsoatreman City FC who sits in 12th place with 21 points will lock horns with second placed Steadfast FC at the Coronation Park in Sunyani. Strugglers Unity FC have a date with contenders Bofoakwa Tano at Kenyasi.

Security Showdown : Police FC host Ghana Army FC in friendly today

Police National Football Club have lined up a pre-season friendly showdown with Ghana Army Football Club to be played at Police Depot Tesano Park on Friday, May 7, 2021.

The game will kick- off at exactly 8:00 am in an all security showdown.

The exercise will serve as a preparation for both teams as they tighten their belts for the Greater Accra Division Two League.

Chairperson for Police Ladies, who doubles as the Greater Accra Regional Football Association (GARFA) Safety and Security Committee Chairperson, ACP Lydia Donkor, will do the kick-off before the game starts.

The ambitious Ghanaian second-tier side have been intensifying their pre-season ahead of the new season.

The police team has been tipped to stage a wonderful outing in the Greater Accra Division Two League when the season starts.

Board member of Asante Kotoko, Mr. Kwadwo Boateng Gemfi has refuted speculations of a purported rift between the board members and the club’s Chief Executive Officer, Nana Yaw Amponsah.

Reports and rumours were rife that there were problems between Nana Yaw Amponsah and some board members of the Ghanaian giants, leading to a threat by some directors and the CEO to resign.

The report further stated that the wrangling had derailed attempts to run the club smoothly as they envisaged.

But in an exclusive interview with Kumasi-based Hello FM, Mr. Kwadwo Boateng Gemfi rubbished those speculations, noting that there is a strong relationship between the CEO and all the members of the board.

“I can tell you there is a good relationship between the board and the Chief Executive Officer, ” Boateng Gemfi told Hello FM.

“There are no issues between the board and the management. They are all speculations. Sometimes I listen to some of your panellists and some other stations and it’s amazing the kind of stories you put out. They are so calculated.

“If you(media) love Kotoko then I think you shouldn’t do that. We should all support the team with a good heart. That kind of speculations won’t help Kotoko in any way. In fact, we’re doing our best, ” he added.

Board member of Asante Kotoko, Mr. Keadwo Boateng Gyemfi has charged the Ghanaian media to be accurate, factual and truthful in their reportage on the club’s issues.

According to him, most of the stories aired by the media are mere speculation and calculated attempt by some media houses to dent the images of the club.

Several reports in the local media have claimed that the current Board of Directors led by business mogul Dr. Kwame Kyei have been ‘fighting’ among themselves and the management team.

The reports suggested that the top hierarchy of the club has not been providing the necessary support because the club’s CEO, Nana Yaw Amponsah is ‘disrespectful’.

But according to Mr. Kwadwo Boateng Gemfi, those reports are false.

He indicated that there is the need that the media be responsible and truthful in their reportage on issues surrounding the club for the holistic development of the club.

“Kotoko is a big team and there is no denying fact that the spirit behind the team is great. Otumfour handed the team to us, we have not slept over it as reported, ” he told Hello FM in Kumasi.

“If I’m to tell you the amount of money the board members have given to support the club you’ll not believe it.

“We’re doing our best. We will complete all projects we have promised to put up before our time comes to an end.

“We will call on the media fraternity to support us. The speculations on the part of the media are too much. Some create stories that don’t exist and that’s worrying. We don’t know how you get that information. Some of them are untrue.

“Give us the peace of mind to work. Because we’re doing the work for Asanteman and everyone.

“It’s the media and the supporters who can assist us to be successful but always we hear about stories that are lies. Some even say the board of directors are fighting. They are all false and honestly, I don’t know where it’s coming from, ” he concluded.

Match Preview: Asante Kotoko face off with Dreams FC at Len Clay

Ibrahim Moro scored the winning goal for Asante Kotoko when they met Dreams FC at the theatre of Dreams, Dawu in December in a match day six encounter.

The left back is by far one of the most exciting players in the on-going League, churning out brilliant displays on weekly basis –leading to his call up into the senior national team, the Black Stars.

Asante Kotoko were knocked off the top spot two weeks ago following a 2-1 loss to Medeama SC at the Len Clay stadium in Obuasi – their second home loss of the season and a win against Dreams FC will boost their morale and put them in good stead for the title challenge.

The Porcupine Warriors lie 2nd in the table with 38 points – one point behind leaders Medeama SC who sit at the top of the Premier League table with 39 points.

They began the second half of the season on a strong – after a 2-0 win against Berekum Chelsea – but Great Olympics pulled the breaks on them – after holding them to a goalless draw in Accra. Asante Kotoko lost 2-1 to Medeama SC on match day 21 but recovered to beat Legon Cities 1-0 on match day 22.

The Warriors aim for a win on Saturday to move back to the top of the table for at least 24 hours before Medeama SC play Liberty Professionals on Sunday.

Dreams FC made headlines on Sunday after their heroics against Accra Hearts of Oak in Dawu. The Still Believe lads scored two brilliant second half goals to beat the Phobians 2-0 to move 5th in the table – 4 points adrift Asante Kotoko.

They certainly look good going into this tie with their shoulders held high having recorded such a famous victory against one of the best teams in the League. Dreams FC started the second round with a home draw against Inter Allies but defeats to Medeama SC and Great Olympics seem to have dashed their title charge until their recent upsurge. In the last three matches – they have drawn two and won one and look pretty good going into Saturday’s crucial encounter against Asante Kotoko.

They have not found a like for like replacement for the departed Joseph Esso – but Ibrahim Issah, Fahadu Suleman, Agyenim Boateng and Sylvester Simba have fitted in quite well since Esso was transferred to MC Alger of Algeria.

The Ghanaian International scored 11 goals before leaving the shores of Ghana.

The game is scheduled for 3pm kick off at the Len Clay stadium on Saturday and will be broadcasted live on StarTimes Adepa channel 247.

2020/21 GPL: Match Preview: WAFA chase first third straight win of season against Great Olympics

WAFA twice came from behind to beat Berekum Chelsea 3-2 on Friday to clinch their second away win of the season and to set up a nerve wracking encounter with Great Olympics on match day 23.

The Academy boys conceded in the first minute of the game in Berekum but recovered in time to beat the former Ghanaian Champions – to hand them their first home defeat since 2015/16 season.

The win gave them their second win on the spin and a win against Great Olympics at Sogakope will be their first third straight win of the season.

Abdul Basit Issah and Justus Torsutsey have added a great deal of experience and quality to the side since their inclusion in the second transfer window. Abdul Basit has scored two goals in the second with Torsutsey bagging two Man of the Match awards.

WAFA remains one of the few players who have not lost a game in the on-going campaign – won 7 and drawn 2 at home scoring 19 goals in the process. On team news, Eric Asamany and John Tedeku are still out due to injury.

Accra Great Olympics scored in either half to beat neighbours Liberty Professionals 2-0 on Sunday to move third in the League log with 37 points – two points behind leaders Medeama SC. They make a tricky trip to Sogakope to face a side who are ruthless at home.

Accra Great Olympics have lost two, drawn one and won one in the second round of the season – picking only three points from a possible 12.

Captain Gladson Awako, Maxwell Abbey Quaye and Samuel Ashie Quaye must put on their A – game to make a case at the Red Bull arena at Sogakope.

Great Olympics have not been bad performers on the road – won 4, drawn 1 and lost 4 in nine away matches.

CAF postpone 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers

The CAF Emergency Committee, in consultation with FIFA, decided to postpone the CAF qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™️ that were due to be played in June 2021 after taking into consideration the current challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the need to ensure the optimal playing conditions for all participating teams.

The qualifiers will now take place in the existing windows of September, October and November 2021, and March 2022.

CAF is reassessing its protocols and processes to enhance the implementation of COVID-related protocols, including specifically focusing on pre-match testing which had been the source of some challenges in previous windows.

Full details on the updated match schedule will be provided in due course.

Ghana FA demote two referees to the lowest level

Referee Abdul Ganiu Abdul Karim and Assistant 2 Paul Setsofia Kofi Deyegbe have been demoted to the lowest level for failing to interpret basic rules of the game. After watching a video recording of the Division One League match between Accra City Stars and Accra Lions, the Match Review Panel decided that the referee and his assistant referee exhibited a high level of incompetence.

The Match Review Panel found that the Referee disallowed a good goal in the 2nd half and awarded a penalty for a fair challenge by the defender on the attacker in the penalty area of Accra Lions FC.

Referee Edward Annan has also been banned for seven matches for awarding a bad penalty in the Division One League match between Star Madrid FC and Skyy FC.

The Committee has however exonerated Referee Emmanuel Baah after Nania FC’s petition on the referee’s performance in their Division One League match against Amidaus Professionals.
