The Nzema derby between Karela and Medeama turned bloody as players and fans of Medeama were attacked by fans of Karela.

The two teams faced off in the Round of 32 of the MTN FA Cup, with the game ending 2-1 in favour of Medeama.

Medeama opened the scoring in the first half through Prince Opoku Agyemang. The Mauve of Yellows doubled their lead through Ebenezer Ackahbi, before Diawisie Taylor scored to reduced the deficit.

However, the beauty of the game was marred by marauding attacks from the home fans.

According to reports from the Crosby Awuah Memorial (CAM) Park, Referee Philip Arthur-Forson was forced to delay the match on two occasions following the attacks from the home fans.

Medeama midfielder Eric Kwakwa midfielder was left bleeding profusely after he was hit with a missile from the irated fans of Karela.

Due to the uncivilized acts from the fans of the home team, the game was delayed for more than 30 minutes and some journalists were denied entry into the stadium.

According to a report from MOTV, bankroller of Medeama SC Moses Parker was also denied entry into the match center.

Further reports also indicates that the fans of Karela hurled stones and others objects at Medeama’s 52-seater bus, damaging the windows of the bus.

The referees were not also left out as they received their share of the beatings after the game. Videos that emerged on the internet after the game shows how the referees were chased by the berserk fans of Karela.

All these ugly incidents comes in just days after the leaders of the two teams held a meeting to squash out any issue between the two clubs.

The match commissioner is expected to make a report to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for swift action to be taken.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has banned the Crosby Awuah Memorial Park at Anyinase indefinitely with immediate effect.

This decision was taken following assaults on players and officials at Aiyinase resulting in injuries and damage to property and unsporting behaviour by the home supporters in the MTN FA Cup Round of 32 tie between Karela United FC and Medeama SC on Sunday, June 20, 2021.

Considering the fact the Association has a process for complaining about any alleged bad officiating and a redress through the Match Review Panel, the Executive Council of the Association see any attack on the Match Officials and opposing players as “an attack against the entire sport, it being, unwarranted and criminal”.

The Executive Council has accordingly exercised its powers under Articles 14(2) and 14(3) of the Ghana Premier League Regulations and has banned the venue indefinitely.

The Regulations empowers the GFA to order the closure of any league centre/venue where the safety of clubs, match officials and/or spectators cannot be guaranteed”.

The GFA Prosecutors have been tasked to proffer the appropriate Charges and for the Disciplinary Committee to sit on this matter expeditiously.

The Association has instructed the Competitions Department to fix the venues for the upcoming home matches of Karela United FC with due regards to the distance to be travelled by the away teams (note that matches can be fixed at the home of the away team, if required).

The GFA wishes to sound a strong note of caution to all members (especially all clubs) that the slightest harassment or attack on Match Officials (Referees, Match Commissioners, GFA Cameramen & Women, Venue Media Officers) and players shall be dealt with severely and swiftly.

The rround of 32 fixtures of the 2020/21 MTN FA Cup were honoured over the weekend.

Defending Champions Asante Kotoko ousted second division outfit Thunderbolt FC 3-1 to progress to the next stage, while record-holder’s Hearts Of Oak thrashed third-tier side Windy Professionals 4-1 in Accra.

Two time winners Medeama SC best Karela United 2-1 on the road to advance to the next stage.

WAFA were eliminated by Accra Young Wise 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 stalemate.

Third World FC vs Tema Youth FC

Hearts of Oak blew aside third-tier side Windy Professionals with a mammoth 4-1 win on Sunday, 20 June 2021 at the Accra Sports Stadium in their MTN FA Cup round of 32 tie. 

The scoreline could have been an annihilation but for the profligacy of the Phobians especially in the first half with Daniel Barnieh being the worst culprit.

Windy Professionals safest pair of hands Abubakar Sowah stretched his leg to stop a Daniel Barnieh shot at goal from inside the box.

The Ghana U20 captain was put through on goal by a lofty pass from Kwadwo Obeng Jnr.

The visitors were not quiet all afternoon. They also showed up after 17 minutes and took the game to the Phobians.

In one instance, skipper Ola Selorm got past Caleb Amankwah with a neat step-over but he got tucked by the defender for a free-kick. That set-piece went straight into the wall.

Barnieh could not punish Windy Professionals again after 20 minutes when goalkeeper Sumaila missed a clearance after coming out of his area.

The ball dropped in the path of the Hearts of Oak forward whose shot at goal was blocked by a sliding Adams Mohammed.

Then Adams followed up with neat tackle inside the box to deny Fatawu Mohammed who was about to pull the trigger.

Before the half hour mark, Barnieh missed another glorious opportunity after his connection to a Frederick Ansah Botchway low cross from the left.

Ten minutes before the break, Barnieh again side netted at the near post with a powerful shot.

Windy Professionals were awarded a free-kick at the edge of the box after Hearts of Oak gloves man Richard Attah- as the last man-fouled an attacker with a stud-high tackle.

But the third-tier side skied that effort with a delivery from Yusif Alhassan.

Five minutes into the second half, Hearts shot into the lead through Barnieh whose shot from inside the box-aided by a deflection- flew past the Windy Professionals goalkeeper.

This was after Obeng Jnr had raided the left flank and whipped in a cross to the forward.

Four minutes later, Barnieh turned provided when he beat the offside trap to square the ball to an unmarked Emmanuel Nettey to direct into the net.

Against the run of play, Windy Professionals pulled one back with a scrappy goal after Frank Okine forced the ball over the line.

But there was a comedy of errors by two Hearts defenders- first Fatawu Mohammed and then Caleb Amankwah- who failed to clear their lines.

After 69 minutes, Benjamin Afutu headed in a Fatawu Mohammed cross from the right side to restore Hearts’ two-goal cushion.

Substitute Manaf Umar sublimely connected home a low cross from Fatawu Mohammed to make it 4-1 for Hearts of Oak in the 77 minutes.

Asante Kotoko advanced to the next round of the 2020/21 MTN FA Cup after their 3-1 win over lower-tier side Thunderbolt FC in the round of 32 in Ejisu.

Evans Adomako opened the scoring but Philemon Kyei pulled parity shortly.

After recess, Adomako grabbed his second on the day before Emmanuel Gyamfi netted the 3rd goal in the 63rd minute.

Ghanaian heavyweight Asante Kotoko advanced to the next round of the ongoing FA Cup after posting a resounding 3-1 win over Division Two side Thunderbolt FC at the Okese Park in Ejisu on Saturday.

Coach Mariano Barreto ringed some changes in his usual lineups as he handed starting roles to players such as Felix Annan, Sarfo Taylor, Samuel Frimpong and Kwame Adom Frimpong.

The Porcupine Warriors scored first in the opening minutes through Evans Adomako in the fifth minute through a header.

Adomako jumped inside the box and headed home Taylor’s cross to make 1-0.

But five minutes Philemon Kyei snatched the equalizer for ThunderBolt FC from a corner kick.

The midfielder headed the ball into the net from a cross following a poor marking inside the box.

The Division Two side gained momentum after scoring, terrorizing the Kotoko goal area for more goals but failed to kiss the back of the net.

Felix Annan rescued Kotoko as he came up with a brilliant save to deny Thunderbolt the second goal in the 14th minute from an effort by Prince Anokye.

Thunderbolt FC captain Kojo Adarkwa Yiadom was a handful for the Kotoko defenders with his trickery and pace.

The first half ended 1-1.

After recess, Evans Adomako scored his second goal of the game from a nicely-hit first time shot inside the box.

The Porcupine Warriors dominated play as they tried to break the defense of Thunderbolt in search of more goals.

Emmdefenceyamfi made it 3-1 for Asante Kotoko with just a tap in from close range in the 63rd minute from a Fabio Gama cross.

Asante Kotoko dominated possession and held on to the two-goal lead to qualify for the next round of the competition.
