Five players nominated for 2020/21 Ghana Premier League Player of the season Award

Five players have been shortlisted as nominees for the NASCO Ghana Premier League (GPL) Player of the season for the 2020/21 league season.

Top scorer Diawisie Taylor, WAFA’s Augustine Boakye, Gladson Awako and Hearts of Oak duo Benjamin Afutu and Ibrahim Salifu have been shortlisted for the top award.

The GFA will announce a three-man shortlist before the winner is announced at the Head Office of Electroland Ghana Limited (NASCO) on Monday, August 30.

A brief presentation ceremony will be held on Monday at the office of Electroland Ghana at 6pm.

The winner of the prestigious award is expected to receive GHc5000 shopping voucher, an all expenses paid weekend stay at the Alisa Hotel and a personalized trophy.

Ghana FA nominate five coaches for GPL Coach of the Season Award

Great Olympics’ coach Annor Walker has been nominated alongside Mariano Baretto, Vladislav Viric, Prosper Narteh Ogum and League winner Samuel Boadu for the NASCO GPL Coach of the season award.

The winner will be announced at a brief presentation ceremony at the head office of Electroland Ghana Limited (NASCO) on Monday August 30 at 6pm.

The winner will receive a shopping voucher worth GHc8000 and a personalized trophy.

Men-die: Manchester City defender charged with rape and sexual assault

Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has been charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, Cheshire police have said.

Mendy, 27, is due to appear in court on Friday and has been suspended by City pending an investigation.

The force said the charges relate to three complainants, over the age of 16, and are alleged to have happened between October last year and this month.

France international Mendy has been remanded in custody ahead of his appearance at Chester Magistrates’ Court, police said.

A police spokesman said: “Cheshire Constabulary and the Crown Prosecution Service would like to remind everyone that criminal proceedings against Mendy are live and that he has a right to a fair trial.”

Mendy joined City from Monaco in 2017 and has since been part of three Premier League title-winning squads, as well as lifting the English League Cup twice.

In a statement, Manchester City said: “Manchester City can confirm that following his being charged by police today, Benjamin Mendy has been suspended pending an investigation.

“The matter is subject to a legal process and the club is therefore unable to make further comment until that process is complete.”

Since his arrival at City four years ago, injuries have limited his playing time, with the defender undergoing knee surgery in the 2018-19 season.

Mendy, who has played for France 10 times and won the World Cup in 2018, played against Tottenham on the opening weekend of the Premier League season but didn’t feature against Norwich last weekend.

City host Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday.

Astute Ghanaian football Administrator Adam Munkaila Nassam has been appointed by FIFA as Match Commissioner for the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar Group C qualifier between Nigeria and Liberia.

The former Chairman of the Northern Regional Football Association will lead a team of officials appointed for the crunch tie. Togolese referee Attiogbe Kouassi Attisso from is the Centre referee. He will be assisted by compatriots Adiwotso Komlan Domenyo (Assistant I), Kabasima Lima (Assistant II) and Bodjona Yelebodom (Fourth referee). El Achiri Abdella from Morocco is the Referee Assessor.

The Match which will be played on Friday, September 3, 2021 at the Teslim Balogun stadium in Lagos is scheduled for 17:00 Hrs. kick off.

CAF License A Refresher Course takes place on Sept 12

The Technical Directorate of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) will roll out the all-important Refresher courses for CAF License A, B and C holders which is a key requirement for Club Licensing this season.

These Refresher Courses are in line with the new CAF Coaching Convention which makes provision for refresher coaching courses for all licenses every two (2) years after obtaining the licenses without which the licence expires or becomes invalid.

The first course will take place at the Ghanaman Centre of Soccer Excellence at Prampram from September 12 -16 September 2021.

Director of Coaching Education Professor Joseph Kwame Mintah will lead the training with assistance and directives from Technical Director Bernhard Lippert and other CAF/FIFA Coaching Instructors.

Coaches are hereby informed that the training fee for the License A Refresher Course is Three Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC3,000) – while License B and C is pegged at Two Thousand Five Hundred (GHC2,500) and Two Thousand Cedis (GHC2,000) respectively.

The fee includes feeding for the five days, accommodation, T-shirts and other learning materials that will be provided during the course.

The CAF Licence “A” Refresher course will also be a prerequisite for the CAF Pro-Licence when it is officially opened by CAF.

Coaches are also to note that holders of the License B and C can only upgrade after undergoing the Refresher courses.

It is imperative for Coaches to take the refresher courses seriously as it will be the main Club Licensing criteria for the 2021/22 season since most of the licences were acquired over two years ago.

The GFA will announce dates for the Licence B and C Refresher Courses in the coming days.

Champions League draw: Manchester City to face PSG and Chelsea will meet Juventus [FULL DRAW]

Premier League champions Manchester City have been drawn to face Paris St-Germain, RB Leipzig and Club Bruges in the Champions League group stage.

Holders Chelsea come up against Serie A giants Juventus, Russian club Zenit St Petersburg and Swedish side Malmo.

Manchester United face Villarreal, who beat them in last season’s Europa League final, as well as Italian club Atalanta and Swiss side Young Boys.

Liverpool are in a tough group with Atletico Madrid, Porto and AC Milan.

This year’s Champions League final takes place at the St Petersburg Stadium in Russia on Saturday, 28 May.

Mixed draw for English clubs

Pep Guardiola’s City side, who were beaten by Chelsea last season in their maiden final in the competition, face a brace of tantalising Group A meetings with Lionel Messi’s new club PSG.

Those matches could see a reunion for Messi with old foe Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been heavily linked with a move to City from Juventus before transfer deadline day.

The two sides meet in the competition for the second consecutive season after last season’s semi-final showdown, which City won 4-1 on aggregate.

Bundesliga side RB Leipzig will also be a difficult proposition, having knocked out Manchester United in the group stage last season.

Jurgen Klopp’s six-time winners Liverpool are arguably in this season’s hardest group, along with La Liga champions Atletico Madrid, Portuguese club Porto – winners in 1987 and 2004 – and seven-time European champions AC Milan.

Liverpool beat Milan in the famous 2005 final in Istanbul, but the Italians gained revenge in Athens two years later.

The toughest task for Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea side will be negotiating home and away meetings with Juventus, while the defending champions should have few problems against Zenit and Malmo.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be much happier with Manchester United’s chances of progression from Group F, having been knocked out in the group stage last season.

The Red Devils will be aiming to take revenge on Unai Emery’s Villarreal, who beat them on penalties in the Europa League final last season.

Champions League stats

  • Chelsea only lost one of their 13 Champions League matches last season, their quarter-final second leg at home to Porto, which they lost 1-0. They remained unbeaten in their seven matches played away from Stamford Bridge (W6 D1).
  • In Champions League history, only one reigning champion has failed to progress from the initial group stage in the following season – that was Chelsea in 2012-13, who finished third in their group before lifting the Europa League that season.
  • Of the 25 managers to have taken charge of at least 50 Champions League matches, Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola has the best win percentage (63% – 86/136).

  • The four Champions League meetings between Manchester United and Villarreal have produced no goals, the most played fixture in the history of the competition to see no goals scored.

Gladson Awako holds first training session with Hearts Of Oak

Midfield dynamo Gladson Awako has been spotted in Hearts of Oak training for the first time since joining the club.

Awako reported for his first training on Thursday, three days after the club officially announced his signing.

The Phobians did not reveal details of the transfer in their announcement.

However, our outfit understands it is a two-year deal with Hearts compensating Great Olympics with $15,000.

The amount paid to Olympics was necessary because Awako’s contract was due to expire in October and Hearts needed to register him for CAF Champions League before the August 16 deadline.

Awako helped Great Olympics finish in a respectable sixth position in the 2020/21 season.

He scored seven goals and assisted six.  Also, he was awarded man of the match four times plus two players of the month awards.

Orlando Pirates announce the signing of striker Kwame Peprah

South African giants, Orlando Pirates have finally confirmed the signing of Ghanaian striker Kwame Peprah from King Faisal FC.

The 20-year-old sealed his switch to the Dstv Premiership side for $150,000 about a fortnight ago but his announcement was delayed by visa issues.

Earlier this week, it emerged that Peprah had first travelled to South Africa with a single entry visa and had been allowed to return to Ghana to reapply for an updated visa while also making the necessary additional arrangements for his relocation.

Finally, on Thursday, the Buccanneers unveiled Peprah as a new signing for the next three years alongside a Nigerian defender.

Asante Kotoko have agreed a deal to sign talented midfielder Richard Boadu from Medeama SC for an amount of GH¢100,000 ($16,583).

The sealed negotiations between the two Ghana Premier League giants include the potential for a further GH¢20,000 in add-ons to be paid by the buying club.

This extra amount depends on the player bagging 20 Premier League appearances and making 10 goals contributions only in his first season.

Kotoko will pay the guaranteed GH¢100,000 in two instalments – 60% first in mid-September and the remaining 40% at the end of January 2022.

Medeama SC will also be entitled to 30% of the net transfer fees of any future Boadu sale by Kotoko.

After spending four years with the Tarkwa-based club, Boadu made it clear it was time to seek a new challenge.

“I’ve engaged Moses Parker [owner of Medeama SC] on my future and I believe he understands my decision to seek a new challenge elsewhere after four years,” the player revealed in an interview in early August.

The 23-year-old giant central midfielder made 24 league appearances for Medeama in the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League with his only goal of the campaign coming in a 2-1 away win over Kotoko at Len Clay Stadium.

Should the Richard Boadu transfer be officially sealed, Asante Kotoko would be securing a player they first pursued in September last year.

Kotoko could further raid Medeama for two more players – midfielder and former loanee Justice Blay and right-back Samuel Appiah. Both players were also on the club’s radar last year.

Asante Kotoko defender Habib ‘Thuram’ Mohammed was invited to the Bono Regional Police Service headquarters on Wednesday to answer questions following altercations that happened between him and another person at a Pub-turned-night club in Sunyani called Groovys, AshesGyamera.com can exclusively reveal.

The 24-year-old, who is on holidays in Sunyani after Kotoko ended the season without a trophy, arrived at the scene on midnight of Saturday, August 21, together with some friends to have fun as they celebrated the birthday of one of the friends.

However, chaos broke out few minutes later at the VVIP section after Habib allegedly got furious because one of the other people around mistakenly popped a champagne and some of the liquid fell on him.Although, some of the people around together with the securities tried to calm down the tempers of Habib and his friends, the situation got out of hands later, as the Kotoko defender didn’t budge.

He allegedly started throwing bottles and metal chairs around to cause chaos. In the process, he destroyed a lot of things including bulbs, chairs as well as injuring the facility owner Eugene Osei Donkor in the process who was rushed to the Sunyani regional hospital for treatment.Owusu later made an official complaint at the Police station and gave an account of what transpired involving the Kotoko defender and his friends.
