Sulley Muntari leads Hearts of Oak’s 20-man travelling squad to face RTU

Coach Samuel Boadu has named a strong 22-man Hearts of Oak squad ahead of their matchday 1 clash against Legon Cities on Sunday.

The Ghana Premier League champions will visit the returnees at the Aliu Mahama Stadium at 15:00GMT.

The Phobians were beaten 1-0 by city rivals Accra Great Olympics in their match week 16 fixture at the Accra Sports Stadium last Sunday. The defending champions will be heading to Tamale to try and grab all three points to help their title defense.

New signings, Sulley Muntari and Dennis Korsah make the squad ahead of the former’s expected Hearts of Oak debut.

Africa U-20 best player Abdul Fatawu Issahaku joins Portuguese side Sporting CP

Highly-rated teenage sensation, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku has joined Portuguese outfit, Sporting Cp, to continue his development.

The versatile midfielder is expected to begin training with the club’s Under-23 side early next week, which could serve as the medium to work his way up into the senior side.

Fatawu Issahaku was a member of Ghana’s Under-20 side that won the Africa Cup of Nations last year, where he won the Most Valuable Player of the tournament while scoring twice for the Black Satellites en route to winning the title.

His stellar performances in the competition as well as his eye-catching displays for Division One side, Steadfast FC saw him secure a loan move to Dreams FC.

While playing in the Ghana Premier League for the first time this season, the 17-year-old found the back on the net six times for the Still Believe lads prior to making the Black Stars final squad for the just-ended AFCON in Cameroon.

The youngster started just one game at the continental showpiece in Cameroon, while making cameo appearances against Morocco and Gabon as Ghana exited the competition in the group stage.

Ghana’s Abdul Fatawu Issahaku joins Sporting Cp

Issahaku has previously been linked to some of Europe’s heavyweight clubs including but the nimble-footed attacking midfielder left the country last night to join the defending Portuguese champions.

Leaders Asante Kotoko will aim for the points as they take on Accra Lions on Match Day 17 of the Ghana Premier League at the Baba Yara Sports stadium on Saturday.

The Porcupine Warriors head into the game on the back of a 2-1 loss to bottom placed Elmina Sharks on Monday to suffer only their second defeat of the season. Asante Kotoko leads the table with 33 points – 4 points richer than second placed Bechem United and 14 points ahead of Accra Lions who are 14th in the League table with 19 points.

With one game – (though Asante Kotoko have fewer matches) to end the first round of the elite competition, the new boys have huffed and puffed in recent weeks having amassed only 19 points after 16 Premier League games (a possible 45) and sit in 14th place in the League log – needing a major recovery to save their season.

The defeat to Elmina Sharks ended Asante Kotoko’s eight match winning run bringing to an end their longest winning run in two seasons – reducing the point gap at the top of the table after 16 matches.

Accra Lions, who only qualified to the Premier League this season have won 5, lost 7 and drawn 4 of their matches and find themselves in the bottom half of the League table – one point above Legon Cities and 8 points ahead of Elmina Sharks who languish at the bottom with 11 points from 16 matches.
Fatawu Hamidu scored an absolute beauty on Saturday to help them to a 1-0 win against Medeama SC at the Accra Sports stadium as they coasted to their 5th win of the campaign.

They have won only twice in their last six outings following two defeats to AshantiGold (1-0) and Berekum Chelsea (3-1), a 1-0 win against Medeama SC and Legon Cities as well as two stalemates against WAFA (0-0) and Aduana FC (1-1).

Swedish club Helsingborgs IF announce the signing of Asante Kotoko youngster Joseph Amoako

Swedish side Helsingborgs IF have announced the signing of Asante Kotoko youngster Joseph Amoako on loan with a purchase option.

The 19-year-old Porcupine winger will be playing for the Swedish outfit for seven months in the 2022 Allsvenskan season which is scheduled to start April 9 and end in November.

The club announced on Saturday morning via their social media pages and the club’s official website.

Speaking to the club’s website, Joseph Amoako says he is happy to be with the Swedish side.

“It’s an honour to be here. I am happy and grateful to be a part of this family. Benjamin Acquah has told me that it is a family club, that everyone around the club is friendly and that everyone will take care of me as they did with him. I am a fast outfielder who likes to challenge and is good with both feet. Olympia is a great arena and I look forward to playing matches here, says the outer forward.”

Kotoko announced signing the talented teenager on October 7, 2021, before the commencement of the ongoing 2021/22 Ghana Premier League.

Amoako made his competitive debut on the opening day of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) with a start in their come-from-behind victory over Dreams FC at the Accra Sports Stadium.

He went on to play 52 minutes in the second match of the season – a 2-0 win over Bechem.
But a training ground injury after match-day 3 kept him out for a couple of weeks.
He has made the bench six times since returning to full fitness.

Amoako was spotted in the stands when Kotoko defeated Medeama SC in a GPL match-day 14 fixture on Sunday.

Asante Kotoko head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has named a 20-man squad list for their Ghana Premier League matchday 17 fixture against Accra Lions on Saturday afternoon.

The Porcupines will be hoping to return to winning ways after their eight-match unbeaten run came to an end last Monday against Elmina Sharks in Elmina.

Midfielder, Fabio Gama has been named in the squad for the first time since returning to the club. Mudasiru Salifu has been left out of the squad due to technical reasons.

Georges Mfegue and Ibrahim Imoro are out of the team due to the latter’s cards accumulation and the former’s red card against Sharks.

However, coach Ogum has named the following players for the all-important fixture which will kick off at 3pm at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Themba ‘Mshishi’ Zwane was at the heart of action on both ends, scoring the solo goal in the eight minute and making a goalline clearance 12 minutes to time as Mamelodi Sundowns beat Al Hilal 1-0 in their opening Group A clash of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League on Friday.

The hard earned victory saw Sundowns scale to the apex of the group after match day one.

Zwane struck the solo goal just eight minutes into the match when he perfectly read a Khidir Safour back pass as Hilal were trying to play their way out from the back.

The deadly forward set himself up inside the box before hitting the ball into the bottom right corner.

Hilal gave in a fight as they tried to get back into the game with Gerald Phiri and Eid Mugadam pressing the Sundowns backline, but they couldn’t crack for an equalizer.

In the second half, they stepped up with goalkeeper Dennis Onyango making a magnificent save from a Faris Abdallah freekick.

Late on, Hilal thought they had picked the equalizer when Safour tried to make amends for his bad pass that led to the goal with a header off a corner, but it was Zwane who was positioned at the posts who plucked the effort away.

The visitors threw everything in the final minutes of the game, but Sundowns held on for the maximum points.

Forward Kheiredine Merzougui missed a 93rd minute penalty as visitors CR Belouizdad failed to pick three precious points away from home in a 0-0 draw with Etoile du Sahel in their TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Group C opening match in Rades on Friday.

After holding their own for most of the match against the home team, they could not make maximum use of the golden opportunity in the third minute of added time.

Belouizdad’s best chance of the half fell on Karim Aribi, but he could not beat the keeper with a fine header inside the box.

Aribi had a golden opportunity to make amends in the second half, but he could not burry a one on one chance. On the other end, the home side came close but were denied by the post when Mohamed Naouali’s header came cracking under the woodwork.

While the Algerians soaked in the pressure and were hitting on the counter, they should have made the most of the best chance they got from the penalty but Merzougui saw his penalty saved by Mathlouthi in the Etoile goal.

Match report: Emmanuel Annor rescues point for high-flying Bechem United against Chelsea in Berekum

Bechem United almost lost three vital points to Berekum Chelsea on Friday afternoon but managed to show resilience at the end of 90 minutes to earn a 1-1 draw.

The Hunters played as a guest to the Blues today in a matchday 17 encounter of the ongoing 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season.

Despite playing well in the early parts of the game, Bechem United lost focus after the half-hour mark with Berekum Chelsea taking advantage to score through Kofi Owusu in the 31st minute.

Fortunately for the visitors, the team managed to put up a strong fight in the second half and restored parity in the 75th minute.

It was all thanks to Emmanuel Annor who scored with a brilliant effort to force the match to end in a stalemate.

Courtesy of the result, Berekum Chelsea are now 9th on the Ghana Premier League table with Bechem United staying in second.

Hearts of Oak will likely lose another big player in the coming days due to some unhappiness on the part of the player.

The Phobians, after their triumphant 2020/2021 season have let go some key members of the squad with some exhausting their contract and others calling for a mutual termination. Some key players who left the 21 time champions include Benjamin Afutu who left to join Egypt club, Al Sharkia Dokhan fc. His absence has sort of created shaping bile in Hearts of Oak’s defensive midfield department. Other key players to have exited are central defender, Nuru Sulley and midfielder, Emmanuel Nettey.

The former requested a mutual termination of contract after struggling for game time with the 2000 CAF Champions League winners. Sulley, despite being a member of the treble winning squad decided to leave on mutual consent and later joined Iraqi club, Duhok Sporting Club. Emmanuel Nettey on the other hand had his contract expired in December last year and decided against extending his stay with the 2001 CAF Super Cup winners. Congolese left back, Raddy Ovouka has also left the club but on loan to the United States. He has joined New Mexico FC on a season long loan deal with an option to make the move permanent. One player who also left the club is striker, Abednego Tetteh who was equally a member of the treble winning squad of last season.

Hearts of Oak have not done badly this season despite failing to churn out the needed performance on the field. They have managed to win six games, drawn as many as five and lost four times.

They sit 7th on the league table with 23 points from 16 matches and a week seven outstanding clash against arch rivals, Asante Kotoko on February 20. Their next opponent is Real Tamale United at the Aliu Mahama Stadium in week 17 to close the first round. The news however is, diminutive winger, Patrick Razak has told the club that he wants to leave due to lack of playing time. He has asked the club’s management to terminate his contract as he is not happy at the club.

Former Sports Minister blames poor domestic league on Ghana FA

Former Sports Minister, Enoch Teye Mensah has blamed the Ghana Football Association leadership for the poor standard of football in the domestic league.

Mensah insists the league lack quality as hoped for because of the improper management of the game by the football governing body.

He indicated that Ghana failed at the just-ended Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon because Ghana has a problem with structure from the juvenile to the top-flight.

“We were not ready for AFCON, we have a problem with our structure from the juvenile to the local league. Our local league is not strong because of the FA, ” he told Kumasi-based Akoma FM.

Mensah advised the hierarchy of the current FA to make consultations to ensure that the standard of football in the country will be improved.

“They can consult us to see how we did it and learn from it. We had a holistic approach to it. I worked hard to convert our amateur league to a professional one. You cannot ignore the basics and go and win. We need to go back to the drawing board.”

Ghana have not been able to win the Afcon since 1982.

In club football, the local clubs have failed on countless occasions to progress to the money zones of the Caf inter-club competitions
