GPL Wk17 wrap-up: Hearts Of Oak drop points again, Kotoko beat Lions to extend lead as Gold Stars hold Ashgold

Hearts of Oak dropped points for the second weekend running after drawing goalless with Real Tamale United at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Sulley Muntari was handed his first start after a good showing in the Mantse derby against Great Olympics last weekend but the former AC Milan and Inter star could not inspire the Phobians to a win.

The draw means Hearts are winless in two games ahead of next Sunday’s Super Clash against Asante Kotoko in Accra.

Ahead of the game, the reigning champions are 12 points behind Kotoko who occupy the top spot in the league.

Meanwhile, their city rivals Great Olympics ended the first round on a winning note. They beat bottom-of-the-table Elmina Sharks in Accra.

Daniel Adjetey scored the only goal in the 91st minute.

In Dormaa, Bright Adjei scored a hat-trick in four minutes as Aduana Stars recorded a resounding 3-0 win against Eleven Wonders.

WAFA end the first round in the relegation zone after they were beaten at home by Karela United. Kelvin Andoh scored the only goal of the game in the 82nd minute.

AshantiGold played out a 2-2 draw with Bibiani Gold Stars while the clash between Medeama and Dreams FC was rained off.

Emmanuel Annor scored to rescue a point for Bechem United in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea in Berekum on Friday afternoon. Striker Kofi Owusu scored for the home side.

Asante Kotoko opened a six-point gap after thrashing Accra Lions 3-1 on Saturday in Kumasi. Frank Etouga Mbella grabbed a hat-trick with Kelvin Kyei snatching the equalizer for the visitors.

The match will be played on Monday at 10:00 am.

RTU announce signing two Hearts Of Oak players and others

Real Tamale United(RTU) have enhanced their squad with the acquisition of four players.

The Ghana Premier League returnees had a fantastic start to the ongoing 2021/22 season, but have had some poor runs recently after the captain of the side, David Abagna joined the Black Stars to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Hearts of Oak striker Victor Aidoo has joined the Pride of the North in a loan deal until the end of the season.

Aidoo, despite an impressive show last season for the Phobians, has struggled to get his name on the team sheet, hence the decision to join RTU for much playing time.

Coach Shaibu Tanko’s side has also secured the services of Medeama SC defender Rashid Alhasssn on a permanent deal.

Bismark Adu – a defender from Dreams FC’s youth side Still Believe has also joined RTU in a permanent deal.

They have also landed the services of Hearts Of Oak youngster Issah Kuka. The attacking midfielder also joins RTU on loan.

RTU are occupying the 12th position on the league log with 19 points.

A hat-trick from Cameroonian import Frank Etouga ensured that Asante Kotoko bounced back to winning ways after beating Accra Lions 3-1.

The Porcupine Warriors came into the game at the back of a 2-1 defeat to strugglers Elmina Sharks and were already on course to bounce back to winning ways after just 3 minutes against Accra Lions. Frank Etouga fired a shot from inside the box pass goalkeeper Fredrick Asare.

Accra Lions came close to leveling the score in the 17th minute. Kelvin Kyei failed to tap the ball into the net from close range after a good work by Daniel Awuni.

Minutes later, Accra Lions reduced the deficit from a spot-kick calmly converted by Kelvin Kyei.

At the start of the second half, both teams had the chance to score, Seidu Basit failed to connected perfectly with a good cross from Christopher Acheampong, whiles Ismail Ganiu saw his effort from a free-kick saved by the goalkeeper.

Minutes after seeing his effort cleared off the line, Frank Etouga scored in the 84th minute to grab his hat-trick and make it 3-1.

Accra Lions in the remaining minutes of the game had two good chances to score but they failed to take those chances.
