GPL: Match Report – Kelvin Andoh bags brace as Karela United rally from behind to beat AshantiGold

Karela United came from behind to beat struggling AshantiGold 2-1 on match-day 19 of the Ghana Premier League at the Crosby Awuah Memorial Park in Ainyinase on Sunday afternoon.

After surprisingly losing hugely at home to Eleven Wonders last weekend, Ashanti Gold went into this game with the hope of snatching at least a point but despite their good start, they ended up losing.

Eric Esso put Ashanti Gold ahead by the 20th minute through a well-taken effort.

Karela piled pressure on the visitors and they got the equalizer by the 40th-minute mark after a defensive mixup by Ashanti Gold.

Andoh made it 2-1 after the break with a calmly taken shot to send the home fans into wild jubilations.

Although, Ashanti Gold laboured to find the equaliser, they could not find a breach in the hosts’ defence.

Karela have moved up to seventh on the log with 27 points while Ashanti Gold have dropped to 13th position with 22 points.

A win for Eleven Wonders in their game against Berekum Chelsea on Monday will see Ashanti Gold dropping into the relegation zone.

GPL: Match Report – Bright Adjei’s early strike hands Aduana Stars win over King Faisal

Aduana Stars secured revenge by beating King Faisal 1-0 on match-day 19 of the Ghana Premier League at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Dormaa-based club went into the encounter determined to win following their 3-1 loss at home to the same side in the first round of the league.

It was Bright Adjei who handed Aduana an early lead after King Faisal’s defenders were caught ball watching on the fifth minute.

Adjei went through the defenders and lobbed the ball over onrushing Frank Boateng.

On the 24th minute, Sam Adams sent a long-range effort but it was parried away by goalkeeper Boateng to deny the former Asante Kotoko midfielder.

King Faisal appealed for a penalty on the 28th minute after one of their players fell in the box but referee Daniel Laryea was not interested their appeals as he waved on.

Mawuli Wayo teamed up with Osman Ibrahim by the 55th minute but the latter’s effort could not beat Aduana goalkeeper.

Aduana have now moved second on the log with 33 points, seven points behind Asante Kotoko who have a game in hand against Bechem United on Tuesday.

Ghanaian football administrator wants Sulley Muntari invited to Black Stars team for Nigeria clash

Administrative Manager of the Ghana League Clubs Association, Mr Oduro Nyarko says Sulley Muntari needs to be in the Black Stars team for the World Cup qualifier against Nigeria.

Ghana hosts the Super Eagles on March 25, 2022 in the first-leg in Cape Coast before traveling to Abuja for the second leg in four days time.

Ahead of the crucial encounter, Mr Oduro Nyarko, who has been impressed with Muntari’s display in the domestic league is urging the technical team to invite the veteran midfielder.

“Sulley Muntari always give tailored measured passes and he needs to be in the Ghana’s squad which will face Nigeria in the upcoming World Cup Play offs,” he told Sikka FM.

Sulley Muntari has been decent since returning to the Ghana Premier League, playing four matches and providing an assist.

He won his first trophy with the Ghana giants after helping Hearts of Oak beat Kumasi Asante Kotoko to win the President Cup.

The 37-year-old put up a superb performance as the Phobians defeated their arch-rivals Asante Kotoko 2-1 to win the 2022 President’s Cup on Friday evening.

Muntari played 81 minutes of the game and was subbed off by Gladson Awako.

Goals from Daniel Afriyie Barnieh and substitute Patrick Razak rendered Samuel Boateng’s strike a consolation in a keenly contested match.

The Accra-based giants bagged their fourth title in a space of a year with their recent success against their sworn rivals.

In-form Daniel-Kofi Kyereh score twice in St. Pauli win

Ghana international, Daniel-Kofi Kyereh continued his newfound scoring form with a brace on Saturday as promotion-chasing FC St. Pauli thrashed Karlsruher SC 3-1 in a 2021/22 German 2. Bundesliga match-day 25 home fixture.

The 25-year-old attacking midfielder – after scoring in a German Cup defeat in mid-week – returned to scoring in the league after doing so last weekend with a stunning free-kick away to Ingolstadt – making it 4 goals in three games in a week.

Kyereh opened the scoring after 14 minutes at the Millerntor-Stadion with a left-footed shot inside the box.

He doubled the lead for St. Pauli in the 25th minute with a back-post finish before Simon Makienok made it three for the joint league leaders in the 34th minute.

Six minutes after the hour mark, Philipp Hofmann found a consolation for Karlsruher to finish the game 3-1.

Kyereh now has 9 goals and 10 assists in 22 league games so far for St. Pauli this season.

Capped five times by Ghana, Kyereh is expected to play a leading role for the Black Stars when they battle the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the 2022 Fifa World Cup playoffs on March 25 and 29.

Match Report: RTU extend winless run as they draw with 10-man Legon Cities in Tamale

It was a tale of a goal in either half as Real Tamale United (RTU) and 10-man Legon Cities settled for a 1-1 draw to open match-day 19 of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League (GPL) Saturday afternoon.

Playing in front of their vociferous home crowd, RTU came to the Aliu Mahama Stadium with revenge in mind having narrowly lost a five-goal thriller when the two sides met in the first round on November 6.

And the agenda of the Pride of the North looked much on course as on-loan Hearts of Oak striker Issah Kuka broke the deadlock in the 28th minute with his debut goal.

RTU took the 1-0 lead into recess.

Starting the second half, coach Maxwell Konadu called upon Suleiman Mohammed from the bench to replace midfielder Michel Otou.

And 11 minutes after restart, Suleiman delivered the equalizer with a powerful header.

Legon Cities were forced to play the final 10 minutes of the game with 10 men as goalkeeper William Essu got sent off for a second yellow card.

The Royals – who had exhausted their substitutions at the time – had striker Abdul Rahman switching positions to move in between the posts and they managed to hold on for a 1-1 stalemate.The result means RTU’s winless streak now stretches to five games, and they have 21 points from 19 games. Legon Cites, meanwhile, move to 23.

Ghanaian striker Kwame Peprah scores for Orlando Pirates against Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby

Ghanaian forward Kwame Peprah grabbed his fifth league goal of the season for Orlando Pirates FC against Kaizer Chiefs FC in the Soweto Derby in South Africa on Saturday.

The 21-year-old striker snatched the consolation goal for his side as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to their rivals.

Reeve Frosler gave the Yellow and Blacks the lead with a sweet finish in the first half after just 18 minutes of the match.

Nine minutes from the break, Peprah found the back of the net for the Black and Whites outfit with a tap in to draw the Confederation Cup side in the game.

With just nine minutes to the end of the match, Erick Mathoho scored the winning goal for Kaizer Chiefs FC to break Peprah and his teammates heart.

This is his first goal in the very decorated Soweto-Derby played between the two teams in the Premier Soccer League in South Africa.

The former King Faisal FC captain has five goals in the ongoing 2021-22 season in South Africa.

Hearts Of Oak wins first trophy of the season as they beat Asante Kotoko to lift the 2022 President’s Cup

Hearts of Oak have won the 2022 President’s Cup after beating Asante Kotoko 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday evening.

Substitute attacker Patrick Razak was the hero as he scored a late winner for the Phobians to win the trophy for the fifth time.

The game looked set to end in a stalemate after Samuel Boateng cancelled out Daniel Afriyie Barnieh’s early strike in the second half.

But Razak finished off a brilliant counter as he went round goalkeeper Danland Ibrahim before calmly slotting the ball into an empty net to send Hearts of Oak fans into raptures.

Friday’s meeting was the second between the two giants in the space of 12 days. The first, a Ghana Premier League clash, ended 0-0.

This one, organised by the Ghana League Clubs Association, was played in honour of sitting President Nana Akufo-Addo and he graced the occasion.
