Otto Addo sets new record with Ghana after World Cup 2022 qualification

Interim Black Stars coach, Otto Addo has set a new record with the Ghana national team after his World Cup 2022 qualification.

Otto Addo masterminded Ghana’s qualification to the 2022 World Cup which will come on in Qatar in November this year after eliminating Nigeria at the Mashood Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Tuesday night.

The Black Stars secures a historic 4th FIFA World Cup tournament having participated in 2006, 2010 and 2014 in Germany, South Africa and Brazil respectively.

The Ghana Football Association appointed Otto Addo in an interim basis for the 2022 World Cup playoffs after the dismissal of Serbian trainer Milovan Rajevac right after the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.

Otto Addo who has about 13 years of coaching experience that dates back to 2009 when he first took up the job of an Assistant Coach at Hamburger SV has now become the only person in Ghana’s history to feature at the World Cup (as aplayer) and subsequently qualify the team to the global football fiesta (as a coach).

Otto Addo also becomes the second ingenious coach to take Ghana to the World Cup after Kwasi Appiah did it in 2014.

The former Dortmund star was a key member of the Black Stars at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, when what was a very young team advanced to the round of 16, where they lost 3-0 at the hands of Brazil – the country’s first-ever appearance at the Mundial.

Addo represented Ghana at the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations and went on to win 15 caps for the Black Stars.

Berekum Chelsea fires warning to Hearts of Oak ahead of today’s Premier League clash

Berekum Chelsea has fired the first salvo ahead of their Premier League home game with Hearts of Oak on Wednesday.

The Bibires will welcome the Phobians to the Golden City Park in Berekum in a Ghana Premier League Matchday 22 encounter as the league returns with midweek encounters.

And, Chelsea has sounded the early warning, informing the Phobians to forget about the three points on their visit to Berekum.

A club spokesperson told the local media that: “There is no way Hearts will escape defeat in this fixture,” insisting that they have prepared well enough to silence the GPL champions on Wednesday.

Berekum Chelsea are enjoying a good run of form at the moment and, they will hope to build on this performance as they host the league champions.

They have been very formidable at home this season and, perhaps this is what they are basing their hopes on to beat Hearts of Oak in this encounter.

A win for Chelsea on Wednesday afternoon, could them them sixth on the table from their present eighth position if other results favour them and, this according to their spokesperson is what they will be going for.

Hearts of Oak are sixth on the table with 32 points and are seeking to defend the title they won last season.

They will not go down at Berekum without a fight and, this sets up an uncompromising encounter for fans in Berekum this Wednesday afternoon.

The game will be shown live on StarTimes Adepa TV channel with kick-off time set for 3:00pm.

Black Stars touch down in Ghana after edging Nigeria to Qatar 2022 World Cup ticket

The Black Stars have arrived safely in Ghana after their triumphant 2022 World Cup qualification after ousting Nigeria in the play-off on Tuesday evening.

Ghana held the Super Eagles to a 1-1 draw which secured them a spot at the Mundial in Qatar this year’s after qualifying with 1-1 aggregate.

Arsenal star Thomas Partey opened the scoring of the decisive game after after 10 minutes at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

Partey’s shot from close range beats goalkeeper Francis Uzoho to end the 60,000 people at the stadium into silence.

Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong converted a penalty to draw the Super Eagles level after a VAR decision in the 22nd minute.

The Black Stars landed at the Kotoka International Airport at around 1:30am and were met by some fans, media and other personalities.

The Sports Minister Hon. Mustapha Ussif and his entourage were also at the airport to welcome the shining stars back from Nigeria.

The entire team is expected to meet the President HE Nana Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House on Wednesday morning.

CAF Official dies after violence broke at the end of Ghana’s victory over Nigeria in Abuja 

The Confederation of African Football’s Doping Officer for the game between Ghana and Nigeria, Dr Joseph Kabungo, has died after violence erupted at the end of the match in Abuja.

Dr Joseph Kabungo, a Zambian medical practitioner, is reported that have lost consciousness after he was beaten and stepped on as fans try to make their way out of the stadium due to a stampede.

In a post on Twitter by British-Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, his death was confirmed after he was rushed to the hospital.

“Sad news: I understand that an official for the Super Eagles of Nigeria v Ghana Black Stars match (not a referee or assistant referee) died in Abuja today,” he wrote in an early tweet.

He then added: “Update: His name is Dr Joseph Kabungo from Zambia. He was on duty as a Doping officer. He collapsed suddenly and died. Cause of death not confirmed yet. His family, the Zambia FA and the government of Zambia have been duly informed.”

A Ghanaian sports journalist, Collins Atta Poku, who was at the venue also gave a vivid account of the sad incident.

“They beat him, he fell and they threaded on him. He lost consciousness was rushed to an ambulance closer to the Ghana dressing for CPR. The entire Ghanaian contingent watched on as resuscitation attempts were made with an oxygen mask. He was taken to hospital later and now this. Sad,” he replied Osasu’s tweet.

CAF is yet to release an official statement but it is understood the family of the office have been noted.

Nigeria on Tuesday night, 29 March, missed the chance to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as the away goal rules helped the Black Stars to pick their ticket for the prestigious tournament.

The Super Eagles played a goalless draw with the Black Stars of Ghana in the first leg in Kumasi with the hopes that they would do something great in the return leg, but they were unable to win.

The German-born central defender, who is of Ghanaian parentage, reconnected to his roots on the back of Ghana’s incredible feat in Abuja.

Ghana booked their fourth appearance at the FIFA World Cup at the expense of sworn rivals Nigeria in a nerve-shredding encounter staged at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

Ghana will be making their fourth appearance at the perennial competition in Qatar.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is slated to kick-start on November 21.

Cameroon had to go to extra time to deny Algeria a chance in the 2022 World Cup following their 2-1 win (Agg 2-) on Tuesday night.

Hosts Algeria who had come into the game with a one-goal advantage thought they had booked their place in Qatar later this year when Touba towered above the Cameroon defence to head home with two minutes remaining on the clock.

The header came in the dying minutes of extra time after Choupo Moting had headed Cameroon into a 22nd-minute lead. With the goal, Algeria had a 2-1 lead on aggregate but Cameroon saved the best for the last when Toko Ekambi scored from close range in the fourth added minute to make the tie even and see his side qualify for the World Cup on the away goal rule.

Earlier, Morocco overcame DR Congo 4-1 thanks to an Azzedine Ounahi double and goals from Achraf Hakimi and Tarik Tissoudali. Tunisia held Mali to a goalless draw but went through 1-0 on aggregate for their second successive World Cup.

The Black Stars of Ghana booked their place for the World Cup in Qatar on Tuesday evening after a 1-1 draw with the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

The first leg of the encounter ended 0-0 last week Friday in packed Baba Yara Stadium.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were the favourites to go through but the Black Stars of Ghana secured their ticket on away goals.

FIFA will provide the Black Stars with $2 million for training ahead of the global tournament, as well as an additional $10 million as a participation fee in the group stage.

The Black Stars have qualified for three FIFA World Cup tournaments; 2006, 2010, and 2014.

In 2006, Ghana was the only African side to advance to the second round of the World Cup in Germany, and was the sixth nation in a row from Africa to progress beyond the group stages of the World Cup.

In the 2010 World Cup, Ghana progressed beyond the group stages of the World Cup in South Africa, and reached the quarter-finals where they were eliminated by Uruguay.

Ghana was drawn in Group G with Germany, the United States, and Portugal in 2014

The Black Stars of Ghana missed the 2018 edition but are back among the best after the doubleheader against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Bruno Fernandes grabbed a brace as Portugal beat North Macedonia on Tuesday night to book their place in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Macedonia who had shocked Italy in the previous round thought they would repeat the same heroics but they found themselves a goal down after 32 minutes when Fernandes combined with his Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo to open the scoring proceedings.

Bruno was to double his and Portugal’s lead five minutes after the hour mark after he got on the end of a Diogo Jota cross and volleyed home from close range.

In another qualifier of the night, Victor Lindelof and his Sweden team will have to watch the World Cup showpiece from home following their 2-0 loss to Poland.

After a goalless first half, Robert Lewandowski grabbed the oper from the penalty spot after Gregorz Krychowiak was fouled inside the area. And the hosts doubled their advantage in 73 minutes as Piotr Zielinski capitalized on a defensive error and finished brilliantly.

The next World Cup slot reserved for Wales v Scotland or Ukraine will take place during the next international break in June.

The Flagstaff House in Accra was sent into frenzy after the Black Stars of Ghana eliminated Nigeria to qualify to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year.

Ghana will be making a fourth appearance in the FIFA World Cup following a 1-1 draw with Nigeria on Tuesday night.

Ghana went into the game knowing that an away goal is all they needed to make it book a place in Qatar later this year following a goalless stalemate at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Friday, March 25.

The visitors took the lead after just eleven minutes through captain of the day, Thomas Partey but that lead was canceled eleven minutes later by Troost-Ekong via a penalty spot much to the delight of the home fans.

After the game, the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E Nana Akufo-Addo who was celebrating his birthday today was joined by the staff at the Flagstaff House to celebrate the nation’s qualification to the Mundial which starts on November 2022 in a heated jama session.

Angry fans of the Super Green Eagles of Nigeria invaded the Mashod Abiola Stadium pitch in Abuja after their 2022 FIFA World Cup playoff game against Ghana on Tuesday night.

The Black Stars qualified on the away goals after the first leg in Kumasi last Friday ended goalless.

Arsenal star Thomas Partey put the Black Stars ahead before William Troost-Ekong scored from the penalty spot to make it 1-1.

It is a return to the World Cup for the Ghanaians after missing out of the 2018 edition.

After the game, angry Nigerian fans at the stadium invaded the pitch, threw tear gas, chased the Black Stars players to their dressing room and attacked some Ghanaian fans.
