Manchester United 3-0 West Ham: Hojlund and Garnacho help Man United brush aside Hammers

0

Rasmus Hojlund made it four Premier League goals in as many games and Alejandro Garnacho scored twice as Manchester United recorded their biggest home league win of the season to move back into the top six against West Ham at Old Trafford.

Hojlund provided the smart 23rd-minute finish to set the hosts on their way to victory.Garnacho’s deflected effort doubled their advantage less than a minute after West Ham full-back Emerson wasted a glorious chance to equalise. The Argentine added another near the end after Scott McTominay seized possession inside the West Ham half.

Remarkably, it was the first time Manchester United had won three successive games since October and only the second time they had managed it all season.

The victory came at a cost though as combative defender Lisandro Martinez, in only the fourth game of his comeback from foot surgery, seemed to injure his knee in a second-half tussle with Vladimir Coufal and, although he tried to continue, he had to be replaced shortly afterwards.

It was a case of what might have been for a West Ham side who drop to seventh. Emerson failed to take another chance after Garnacho’s goal and Diogo Dalot slid in to make a brilliant block shortly afterwards when Jarrod Bowen ran free onto a long ball that dropped over the head of Harry Maguire.

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana also made excellent first-half saves to deny Ben Johnson and Mohammed Kudus.

2023 AFCON: Heroic Williams saves South Africa on penalties to dump out Cape Verde

0

Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was the hero as South Africa beat Cape Verde 5-3 on penalties following a goalless 120 minutes to advance to the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

After a tense last eight clash ended 0-0 at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro on Saturday night, Williams remarkably saved four spot-kicks in the shootout to send Bafana Bafana through.

Both sides started brightly in an open first half, but stellar defending and top-class goalkeeping from Williams and Cape Verde’s Vozinha kept the game goalless at the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern as the teams traded blows in search of the breakthrough. But a combination of desperation and brilliant defending saw numerous chances go begging.

Cape Verde almost stole it in added time when Gelson Tavares pounced on a deep ball only to smash his shot off the bar with Williams getting a hand to it. 0-0 after 90 minutes meant extra time.

The additional 30 minutes brought more chances, with South Africa’s Fagrie Lakay forcing a superb save from Vozinha. But the deadlock remained to send the quarter-final into penalties.

After an impressive four penalty saves by Williams, Bafana Bafana secured their place in the semi-finals for the first time since 2000 where they will meet Nigeria.

2023 AFCON: Late drama as Cote d’Ivoire come back from behind to beat Mali

0

Tournament hosts Cote d’Ivoire pulled off an extraordinary comeback win despite being reduced to 10 men to beat Mali 2-1 after extra time and reach the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

In a dramatic quarter-final at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake, the Elephants were dealt an early blow when Odilon Kossounou conceded a penalty and was sent off in the first half for fouling Lassine Sinayoko.

However, keeper Yahia Fofana saved Adama Traore’s spot kick to keep the Elehpants level at the break.

Outnumbered, the hosts were eventually breached in the 71st minute when Mali substitute Nene Dorgeles fired in from the edge of the box to give the Eagles a deserved lead.

But the Ivorians showed tremendous spirit and equalised against the run of play through Simon Adingra, who pounced on a rebound after Seko Fofana’s long-range drive was parried.

The game went to extra time, where the heroics of keeper Fofana kept Mali at bay once more.

As penalties loomed, Oumar Diakete snatched a dramatic late winner for Ivory Coast with a clever backheel finish in the 119th minute.

In an epic encounter, the Elephants once again showed their fighting spirit to stun another big rival and keep their AFCON dream alive.

Cotê d’Ivoire will play DR Congo in the semi-finals at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan on Wednesday, 07 February.

MATCH FACTS

  • Côte d’Ivoire have won their first Africa Cup of Nations game that has gone to extra-time since the quarter-finals of the 1992 edition they eventually won (1-0 v Senegal, 11 penalty shoot-outs and one defeat between those wins).
  • Mali and Côte d’Ivoire have both scored eight goals via substitutes at the African Cup of Nations since 2010. Only Egypt have scored more via players coming off the bench over that period (10). Indeed, it’s the first AFCON game to see goals scored by three different substitutes since 2010.
  • Odilon Kossounou and Oumar Diakité are the first Côte d’Ivoire players to be sent off in the Africa Cup of Nations since Gervinho against Guinea in 2015.
  • Yahia Fofana is the first Côte d’Ivoire goalkeeper to save a penalty at the Africa Cup of Nations since 2010 – 8 faced over that period.
  • Mali’s Diadié Samassékou provided his second assist at the African Cup of Nations, doing so previously against Mauritania in his very first appearance in the competition back in 2019.
  • Côte d’Ivoire’s Oumar Diakité is the first player to score a goal in the 120th minute in the Africa Cup of Nations since Jaouad Zairi for Morocco against Algeria in the quarter-finals in 2004.

Kumasi High Court rules for Government, NSA and Ghana Police to pay Asante Kotoko supporter GHS1 million after he was shot in the eye at stadium

Asante Kotoko supporter who was shot in the eye four years ago at the Baba Yara stadium wins GHS 600,000 case against the Ghana Police, the Government and the National Sports Authority(NSA).

The Kumasi High court on Friday, February 2, 2024 finally ruled that the NSA, Ghana Police and the Government should settle Augustine Oppong with GHS600,000 plus other charges amounting to a total of GHS1million.

According to the lawyer of Augustine, Sarfo Duku Esq who spoke with Sir Joe Laka on Kessben FM, If the money is not paid within a stipulated period after all technicalities are concluded, the court would give them permit to sell any Government property worth the amount.

The incident occurred when the Porcupine Warriors were pipped by Berekum Chelsea at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

Background

For 31-year-old Augustine Opoku, Sunday, January 12, 2020, will always be remembered with deep sorrow, anguish and regret.

It’s a day that will for the rest of his life remind him of how he fell victim to a police officer’s inability to exercise discretion.

The day promised to be exciting. An impressive start to the league season had seen his darling club Asante Kotoko pick six points from two matches and were going to play Berekum Chelsea on matchday 3.

With his two eyes glued in their natural positions, he left his house full confidence to cheer Kotoko to victory over ‘The Blues’.

In the course of the game at the Baba Yara Stadium fans’ angry and unruly reaction to a ‘legitimate call’ by the referee resulted in a temporary stoppage of the match.

Cool heads will prevail and the game will resume only for the chaos to escalate after the match.

A police officer’s bid to control the angry crowd resulted in him shooting straight into the eye of Augustine Opoku who per eyewitness account had no hand in the disturbances.

A flurry of condemnation statements were issued by all stakeholders. From the Ghana Football Association to the supporter’s body of Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

All parties promised their cooperation to the Ghana Police to investigate the issue and punish the culprits.

The Police in their first move interdicted the police officer whose identity has been hidden from the public and assured to deal with the matter with the alacrity it deserves.

2023 AFCON: DR Congo power past Guinea to reach semi-finals

0

DR Congo are through to the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals after a dominant 3-1 victory over Guinea in Friday’s quarter-final.

The Leopards came from behind to book a ticket in the last four after defeating their opponents at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara.

The Congolese weathered early pressure from the Syli Nationale before taking control of the tie.

Guinea led through Mohamed Bayo’s 20th minute penalty after he was fouled in the box.

The Guineans were awarded a penalty after Mohamed Bayo fell in the penalty box following a touch from Chancel Mbemba.

A penalty was overlooked initially but after a VAR review, it was awarded. Mohamed Bayo converted calmly to put Guinea into the lead.

But DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba rose highest to power home an equaliser from a corner just seven minutes later.

After the break, the Leopards turned the screw. Cedric Bakambu should have put them ahead when he missed a golden chance before Sekou Sylla fired off target for Guinea.

The decisive moment came midway through the second half when lively substitute Silas was brought down in the area allowing Yoane Wissa to slot home from the penalty spot.

Guinea were deflated and DR Congo sealed the win late on when Arthur Masuaku fired in a stunning third goal.

It was a commanding performance from the two-time champions who will face either hosts Cote d’Ivoire or Mali in the semi-finals.

Despite defeat, Guinea can take pride from a run that saw them reach the last eight for only the third time in their history.

But DR Congo’s power and quality shone through as they edged closer to a first African crown since 1974.

MATCH FACTS

●       DR Congo have qualified for their sixth semi-final in their history at the Africa Cup of Nations, the second in the 21st century after 2015. The Leopards have won two of their last three quarter-finals in the competition (L1), having won just one of the first six (L5).

●       Guinea have lost for the fifth time in five quarter-finals at the Africa Cup of Nations, the nation with the most appearances at this stage losing each time, ahead of Angola, who lost for the third time in three QFs earlier this Friday.

●       DR Congo are the second nation to score at least 3 goals in an Africa Cup of Nations knockout match with 100% converted shots on target, after Burkina Faso in the edition 2021 (3 goals from 3 shots on target v Cameroon in the 3rd place game).

●       Two penalties were granted in a knockout game at the Africa Cup of Nations for only the second time since 2010, after Senegal-Tunisia in the semi-final of the 2019 edition (also 2).

●       DR Congo conceded just their third penalty in 22 games at the Africa Cup of Nations since 2010, the second at the 2023 edition. They have conceded their last two goals at the AFCON from a penalty (Mohamed v Egypt, Bayo tonight), as many times as in their previous 51.

●       Mohamed Bayo scored three of Guinea’s four goals at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, becoming the first Guinean goalscorer in a quarter-final of the tournament since Pascal Feindouno in 2006 (v Senegal). In the 21st century, only… Feindouno (4) has scored more goals in an AFCON edition for Guinea than Bayo (3).

●       Aged 29 years and 178 days, Chancel Mbemba has become DR Congo’s second oldest goalscorer in the Africa Cup of Nations, after Nicodème Kabamba in 1968 (31 years and 167 days v Congo). It is also only the Leopards’ second goal from a corner at the Africa Cup of Nations since 2010, after Mbemba’s goal in 2019 (v Madagascar).

Arthur Masuaku scored DR Congo’s first direct free-kick at the Africa Cup of Nations since Paul-José M’Poku in 2017 (v Togo). The Leopards have become the first team to score three goals from set-pieces in a knockout match at the AFCON since 2010.

2023 AFCON: Nigeria beat Angola to reach semi-finals

0

Nigeria secured their place in the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire on Friday after defeating Angola 1-0 in Abidjan, thanks to a first-half goal from Ademola Lookman.

The former England Under-21 winger emphatically converted a cut-back from Moses Simon four minutes before the break in Abidjan.

The 1-0 scoreline flattered Angola, who were second best for long periods of the game, and Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen had a 75th-minute header ruled out for offside by the video assistant referee (VAR).

Angola’s best chance fell to Zine, who rolled the ball against the base of the post when clean through on goal just before the hour mark.

Nigeria will now face the winner of Saturday’s quarter-final between Cape Verde and South Africa (20:00 GMT) in the last four next Wednesday.

If possible, the humidity inside the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium appeared to have gone up another notch from previous games at the finals but both sets of players gave their all despite the conditions to entertain what ended up being a near-capacity crowd.

Angola carved out the first chance of the game, as Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali tipped Mabululu’s effort away following Gilberto’s flick-on from a corner.

But the Palancas Negras showed little intention of over-attacking in the first period, preferring to sit deep and soak up pressure before launching counter-attacks.

The tactic worked well to limit their opponents until just before half-time, when Simon was the architect of Lookman’s goal.

The Nantes man timed his run well to win the ball ahead of the sliding Kialonda Gaspar and surged down the left flank before showing a cool head to look up and pick out his fellow winger’s late run into the area.

Lookman, who now has three goals in the knockout stage, applied the calm side-footed finish.

Nigeria celebrate a goal against Angola

Nigeria will face the winner of Saturday’s quarter-final match between Cape Verde and South Africa in the semi-finals scheduled to played on Wednesday.

Ghana trying to convince Man United youngster Kobbie Mainoo to switch allegiance – GFA ExCo member

0

The Ghana FA is trying to persuade Kobbie Mainoo to ditch England and represent the African nation instead.

Mainoo’s breakthrough season hit new heights on Thursday when he scored a stunning stoppage-time winner in Manchester United’s 4-3 victory away to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 18-year-old midfielder, described as a “generational talent” by his team-mate Rasmus Hojlund, also scored four days earlier in the 4-2 win over Newport County and has played 15 times for Erik ten Hag’s side.

Mainoo’s progression has not gone unnoticed in Ghana, the homeland of his parents, where Mainoo regularly visits during his time off. The midfielder has represented England at three different age groups, but the Ghana FA still thinks it has a chance of persuading him to play for them.

“The Ghana Football Association is interested in monitoring, attracting, and persuading all eligible talents for its various national teams,” Randy Abbey, a member of the executive council of Ghana FA, told The Times. “Kobbie is definitely one of such incredible talents, and the Association will love to work with him and many like him home and abroad.”

Ghana need a talisman after what Abbey described as a “disastrous” Africa Cup of Nations campaign in which they failed to qualify from their group.

Mainoo’s 97th minute winner at Molineux came after he slipped the ball between Max Kilman’s legs and curled the ball into the far corner. The midfielder described it as a “dream” scenario for him given that he has been at the club since the age of eight. “To start playing in the Premier League for my boyhood club has been amazing,” Mainoo said. “Now [I am] just trying to get a good run of games in, win more games and get real momentum going.”

Hojlund has grown close to Mainoo since the striker arrived from Atalanta last summer.

“We enjoy spending time outside [the pitch] together,” the 20-year-old Dane said. “Us young guys, we have a little group and we’re chatting to each other and it’s very cool to have other young players around the team and hopefully we can set an era for the club and be here many years together.

“Kobbie is so relaxed on the ball. Now he’s also starting to show that he has the scoring parts of his game as well. He’s a complete player.”

Ten Hag, meanwhile, has admitted that he will have to be “creative” with his team selection in the final stages of the season after the board were unable to sign the striker that he wanted.

Ten Hag said it was “no secret” that he wanted to buy a forward in the January transfer window, but he was told that United would risk breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

Mainoo has played for England at U17, U18 and U19 level

It has left Ten Hag with just five senior players — Marcus Rashford, Antony, Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony Martial — to fill three forward positions and Martial is out for the next ten weeks with a groin injury.

“I wanted a striker,” Ten Hag said. “With the injury to Martial we don’t really have the back-up. But it wasn’t possible because we have to match the FFP rules. We have Omari [Forson], we have Amad Diallo. Of course we have Rashford who can play there. But I think for the rest, all the positions are occupied. We have to be a little bit creative, it’s up to the No 9 position.”

Sofyan Amrabat and Victor Lindelof are expected to return for Sunday’s home match against West Ham United.

Long-term absentees Tyrell Malacia (knee) and Mason Mount (calf) are out and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (leg) is also a doubt.

Mount, a £60 million summer signing from Chelsea, has not played for the past three months but Ten Hag insists that he will feature for his team again this term.

“It is very frustrating for him and I really feel for him,” Ten Hag said of the 25-year-old England international.

“I am sure he is a very good player for us. But, first of all, what’s now important is we have to do it very secure to get him fit, secure in the process, step by step, don’t force it and then hopefully by the end of the season he can stay fit and fight his way into the team, or at least play a role in his team.”

Gabonese referee Pierre Ghislain Atcho sacked from AFCON 2023 over Senegal-Cote d’Ivoire match handling

0

Gabonese referee Pierre Ghislain Atcho, known for his officiating in the Senegal vs. Cote d’Ivoire match has been removed from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations officials following controversies.

The CAF Referees Committee, led by Ivorian Désiré Doué Noumandiez, made this decision.

Criticisms centred on Atcho’s handling of key moments, including not sending off Sadio Mané for a tackle, a missed penalty for the hosts Cote d’Ivoire, and an unawarded penalty for Senegal.

Despite his previous successful officiating in the Egypt-Ghana match, Atcho’s performance in the crucial Senegal-Cote d’Ivoire encounter in the Round of 16 led to his sidelining.

The decision has sparked debates, with the Senegalese and French press expressing satisfaction.

The failing use of VAR during the match also drew scrutiny. Atcho, a 31-year-old Gabonese referee, faced challenges in dealing with professional simulation.

While considered a sanction by some and sidelining by others, his removal from AFCON 2023 reflects the aftermath of a match deemed crucial in the tournament involving defending champions Senegal and the host country.

Former West Ham United coach Nikola Jurcevic submits CV for Black Stars coaching job

0

Former assistant coach of West Ham United, Nikola JurĄević, has formally submitted his resume to the Ghana Football Association, indicating his interest in being the next head coach of Ghana.

With more than 15 years of coaching expertise and a successful track record, JurìeviĄ‡ is sure of his abilities to take the Black Stars to the next level after Chris Hughton was fired following Ghana’s humiliating group stage loss from the AFCON 2023.

Jurčević initiated his coaching career in 2002 with NK Zagreb and swiftly ascended to the managerial role at Dinamo Zagreb, where he secured the Prva HNL and Croatian Cup in 2004. His coaching journey also includes stints with NK Slaven Belupo and serving as an assistant manager for the Croatia national team.

In 2015, Nikola joined West Ham United as an assistant manager under Slaven Bilić, eventually taking the helm at Dinamo Zagreb in 2018. His coaching experience extends to managing the Azerbaijan national team and the Lebanon national team, achieving a commendable 1-1 draw against Croatia in a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier.

Equipped with a wealth of experience and a commitment to developing young talent, JurÄević is enthusiastic about the prospect of working with the Black Stars, recognizing the need for substantial rebuilding within the team.

His agent, Vukoja Josip, asserts that Nikola’s extensive coaching background and proficiency in multiple languages position him as a strong candidate for the role.

Notably, JurÄević, a former attacking midfielder, scored 51 goals in over 200 career appearances for clubs such as Dinamo Zagreb, NK Zagreb, Royal Antwerp, Austria Salzburg, and SC Freiburg.

This playing experience provides him with a unique understanding of the demands of the game, and he is eager to impart his knowledge to the emerging generation of African stars.

According to his agent, Nikola JurÄević is a highly qualified and experienced coach, ready to embrace the challenge of leading the Ghanaian national team.

Ablakwa’s so-called AFCON expose: A dishonest rhetoric by a notorious political propagandist

0

I have read, unsurprisingly, a so-called investigative result, which claimed to have “uncovered” Ghana’s “hidden” budget for the Black Stars’ disappointing campaign in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in  Cote d’Ivoire.

In as much as I found the write-up, verbose and baseless, I was not surprised by the characteristic attempt by the author, Member of Parliament and former Minister of State in the erstwhile Mills/Mahama regimes, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to sensationalise, and create an erroneous impression of misappropriation and corruption, when the so-called evidence he presented on his Facebook page, is as gaping as anything hollow one can imagine.

After reading the supposed expose three times, I did not get exactly what the Member of Parliament was seeking to communicate to the Ghanaian public.

However, the more I read, the clearer it was that he was merely embarking on his usual social media political expeditions.

If I may ask, Mr. Ablakwa, what exactly was he seeking to communicate?

That Ghana prepared a budget of US$8.5 million for the Afcon?

That the Ministry of Youth and Sports requested an advance payment of US$5 million from the Ministry of Finance from the approved budget? That Ghana’s total budget of $8.5 million was more than the expected prize money for the World Cup?

There is nothing wrong or incriminating about all these three questions, if your answers to them are in the affirmative, which they are, based on the MPs own write up.

Merely publishing a letter, from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, to the Ministry of Finance, duly requesting for part payment of a total budget sum approved, and trying to suggest criminal conduct, is a lazy and a shameful approach by a Member of Parliament to soil the reputation of a public officer.

Was it procedurally wrong for the Ministry of Youth and Sports to have written to the Finance Ministry, requesting for the release of some of the approved money, in line with what has been duly approved?

If Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa has any reason to suspect criminal conduct over the disbursement of the US$5 million requested, or any money released, there are legal and acceptable avenues to get to the bottom of it. You don’t launch a hypocritical political propaganda, especially when the presentation is hollow, baseless and sensational.

Okudzeto Ablakwa’s attempt to impugn corruption on the part of the Minister of Sports, and a fellow MP in the August House, because a  budget of US$8.5 million, out of which US$5 million part payment was requested, is most unfortunate, to say the least.

As for his attempt to further impugn corruption because the total budget for the AFCON, is US$1.5 million more than the total prize money for the AFCON, is hypocritical, coming from a former Minister of State, whose government presented bigger budgets.

The management of a national football team, is not a matter of profit and loss, for the MP to make such ridiculous deductions and declare a loss. No one will fault him if he makes a case for financial prudence in the management of the Black Stars. But to simply make a blanket statement of a $1.5 million loss, because of excess budget over revenue, is to either expose his ignorance or hypocrisy, because this has been the usual practice, including by his own party and erstwhile government, especially for the African Cup of Nations.

In as much as I won’t fault any genuine call for prudent financial management, it is also important to note that in football, it is normal for teams, especially national teams, to spend far more than what a tournament offers as prize money (especially the Afcon), because when a team wins, there are more indirect and unquantifiable benefits, apart from the cash on offer. Countries normally spend more to qualify and prepare for the Afcon, and their total budgets, including what is approved for them for the main tournament, would normally be more than the Afcon prize money.

Does Okudzeto Ablakwa have an idea how the Ghanaian football ecosystem, tourism and the Ghanaian economy would be boosted if the Black Stars were to win the Afcon? The gains would surely be more valuable than the $7m prize money at stake.

For his information, the African Cup of Nations was not financially rewarding, until recently. There were no cash prizes on offer, yet countries, including Ghana, right from the days of our founding President, Kwame Nkrumah, did not opt out because there would be no profit. The country spent loads of money preparing.

The hypocrisy

During the 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015 Afcons, which were played when Okudzeto Ablakwa was a Minister in the governments of John Mills and John Mahama, the Black Stars budgets for these tournaments were far more than the prize money on offer, yet OkudzetoAblakwa kept quiet.

What hypocrisy!

In 2015, under the government of John Mahama, in which Ablakwa Okudzeto was a Minister, the government prepared a whopping budget of US$15 million for the tournament, which far exceeded the  meagre US$1.5 million prize money on offer.

Interestingly, the US$15 million budget for 2015 Afcon covered 6 rounds of matches, as the tournament had 16 teams, unlike now, which has 24 teams and  the 7 rounds of matches  which the budget covers. Again, for the same 2015 Afcon tournament, each member of the Black Stars was gifted a brand new Jeep, facilitated by the state, for placing second at the tournament.

My simple question is:  where was Okudzeto Ablakwa when his then government approved a budget of US$15 million against a prize money of US$1.5 million? Did he also calculate the total value of the cars in addition to the budget of the tournament, against the prize money for placing second? This is legendary political hypocrisy!

Another hypocritical line in Okudzeto Ablakwa’s sensational, but utterly baseless exposè, was that government is spending on football when there are other social issues to tackle!

This is shocking, especially coming from a former Minister of a government which subjected Ghana to global ridicule by flying US$3 million on an airplane to Brazil in 2014, at a time the entire country had been plunged into fuel and energy crisis!

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, if you have deliberately forgotten, and your cohorts be reminded that vehicles and the general public used to form long queues during the Brazil 2014 World Cup to buy fuel, and there was also ‘dumsor’ all over, during the 2012, 2013 and 2015 Afcons, yet the Mahama government, of which you were part of, and defended, spent millions, which required a Commission of Enquiry to unravel some mysteries and some outrageous expenses, including buying coconuts at exorbitant prices.

Did you not see all these then? Or you have just found your voice because it is politically expedient for you to do so now? Up you your game, and treat your audience with some level of respect.

Your claim of having uncovered the Black Stars budget is nothing but propaganda! The budget you keep referring to, cannot be a classified document and you ought to know better as a Member of Parliament.

A document which has gone through different layers of approval processes, in different public offices for approval, from the GFA, to the Ministry of Sports, Chief of Staff’s office and then to the Ministry of Finance, surely, cannot be a classified document, for you to uncover.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports may have, for their own reasons, decided not to have disclosed the budget before the tournament, which I disagree, considering the enormous public interest in a Black Stars budget. For the sake of public interest and the promotion of transparency, I am for full disclosure of football budgets BEFORE a tournament. But failure to disclose, does not mean the Minister, or the Ministry has misappropriated money, as you, an Hon. Member of Parliament sought to portray.

How can an experienced, three-term Member of Parliament not know that a simple paper in Parliament can compel a Minister of State to account, and give the nation all necessary information. You rather decided to shelve your parliamentary responsibility, instead, chose to engage in a hollow conjecture on social media and a sensational publicity stunt for your own political agenda.

Successive Ministers of State, including Ministers from your NDC party and governments, have always been invited to account in parliament. The most recent being after Ghana’s participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The Minister of Youth and Sports, himself a Member of Parliament  was summoned by Parliament to give a breakdown of the budget for the tournament and expenditure.

This is how responsible MPs should behave, not publishing a letter requesting for part payment of an approved budget, and creating baseless ‘hoo haa’ of criminal conduct without any evidence suggesting misappropriation.

Your so-called exposè, is nothing but cacophonous noise, laden with baseless conjecture and flowery words. It is merely political propaganda because if you check well, you will realise that you are pointing one finger at the present government, but the rest of your fingers are pointing at you and your erstwhile government.

What you did, by publishing a document that has already been exchanged between public offices, and presenting it as the result of some masterclass investigation, is akin to telling the world you have discovered that the sun will rise from the east tomorrow morning.

There is a difference between advocating for budget cuts for the Black Stars and being a hypocritical political propagandist, who only sees the “truth” because it is politically expedient to do so. What you are doing is the latter!
