2023 AFCON final: Nigeria vs. Ivory Coast – Preview, prediction, team news, lineups

0

Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final between Nigeria and Ivory Coast at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium is a rematch of their Group A encounter.

Much has changed since the Super Eagles defeated the Elephants earlier in the tournament, with the hosts surmounting obstacles when hope seemed to be lost, and they now appear to have momentum heading into the decider in Abidjan.

The game will KickOff at 20:00 GMT (8pm)

Match preview

While fans of Ivory Coast felt making the decider was attainable before AFCON 2023 kicked off, it was different for the Super Eagles, who went from outsiders for the trophy to being the highest-ranked nation left in the competition after group-stage exits to Algeria and Tunisia and early elimination in the knockouts to Egypt, Morocco and defending champions Senegal.

Despite the three-time champions’ outstanding talent, reservations about Jose Peseiro‘s team fuelled doubts about this side, whose performances and results leading to the finals left much to be desired.

However, the West African side have shown a different version of themselves at the tournament proper, creating chances in their opener against Equatorial Guinea without winning, altering their approach to defeat Ivory Coast and demonstrating defensive astuteness through their journey in the knockout rounds to bring them within touching distance of a fourth crown.

While much has been made of Stanley Nwabali‘s impact between the sticks after his penalty-saving exploits against South Africa, the Chippa United goalkeeper’s assuredness has spread calm throughout a previously shaky backline.

The Super Eagles’ four-game run without conceding was halted in the semi-final, albeit by Teboho Mokoena‘s 90th-minute penalty, making Nwabali’s only open-play concession Iban Salvador‘s strike in the shot-stopper’s tournament debut.

More fascinating for Peseiro’s men is how they have made it this far despite Victor Osimhen not scoring since the 1-1 draw with Nzalang Nacional, even if the Napoli striker’s telling contributions are underscored by his tenacity without the ball, creating chances for teammates and causing panic for the opposition.

The current African Footballer of the Year has had several goals disallowed, typically due to his penchant for being caught offside, although he set up Ademola Lookman‘s first against Cameroon in the round of 16 and has won decisive spot kicks against Sunday’s opponents and in Wednesday’s semi-final.

With or without scoring, Osimhen’s capacity to influence games could aid the Super Eagles’ bid for a fourth African title.

After having first-hand experience of the Napoli striker, Ivory Coast should feel better prepared to take on the Nigeria superstar, with Peseiro’s men taking the Elephants by surprise with a switch to a back three — that turned into a five-player backline — when they met on January 18.

The jettisoned Jean-Louis Gasset could not react to turn the game with alterations, and the home side resorted to shooting from unfavourable positions when they could not unpick the Nigerian rearguard.

What followed was a 4-0 humiliation against Equatorial Guinea that many thought signalled the end of the Elephants at AFCON 2023, but the home side have raised their level significantly and have been buoyed by the intense support.

Emerse Fae was placed in temporary charge of the side before the Ivorians knew their qualification fate, and the ex-Ivory Coast international has taken the team past the threat of a dreaded Senegal team chasing back-to-back titles and defeating Mali in the quarter-finals despite playing the entire second half and an additional 30 minutes in extra time with 10 men.

An impressive aspect of this team has been the capacity to respond to setbacks in the knockout stage, having fallen behind in the round of 16 and quarter-final games against the Lions of Teranga and the Eagles, with the latter arguably trumping the former because they were short-handed.

After showing the mental fortitude to persevere, the hosts then halted their run of conceding first in the 1-0 victory over Congo DR — they let in opening goals against Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Senegal and Mali — courtesy of Sebastien Haller‘s unconventional finish that deceived Lionel M’Pasi to put them one game away from a third continental title.

The Borussia Dortmund striker was making his first start of the finals, supported by Brighton & Hove Albion attacker Simon Adingra, who netted the late leveller against Mali in the semis, and the pair could be difference makers in Sunday’s decider.

Having lost the previous two meetings with Nigeria at AFCON 2013, eventually won by the Super Eagles, and earlier at the ongoing finals, the Elephants seek to end their two-game Cup of Nations losing run in this West African rivalry to become the 12th hosts and first since Egypt in 2006 to claim the title on home soil.

Team News

Relative to the hosts, the mileage of several Nigerians means they are at a physical disadvantage, underscored by Semi Ajayi, Ola Aina, Osimhen and Frank Onyeka playing over 500 minutes, while the quintet comprising Calvin Bassey, William Troost-Ekong, Lookman, Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon have accumulated over 400 minutes.

Despite feeding off scraps against Bafana Bafana, Osimhen — who found ways to be decisive after overcoming abdominal discomfort to play in the semi-final — should be supported by Lookman and Simon up top.

Peseiro finally handed Terem Moffi and Kelechi Iheanacho long-awaited game time in the semis, and the pair were composed to dispatch their spot kicks in the shootout, with the Leicester City man converting the decisive penalty.

It remains to be seen if the previously erratic Zaidu Sanusi features at wing-back after his non-appearance in the semis, signifying that Bright Osayi-Samuel could be retained on the right with Aina filling in on the other flank.

Fae’s troops may have played extra time on two occasions before the final, but they are undoubtedly the fresher side, evidenced by only Evan Ndicka (600 minutes), Ghislain Konan (564), Seko Fofana (530) and Franck Kessie (527) accumulating worrisome mileage.

The next pair of Ibrahim Sangare (371) and Wilfried Singo (327) have played significantly fewer minutes than their opponents, with the Nottingham Forest midfielder not starting since the round of 16 and Singo not guaranteed a starting spot at right-back.

Speaking of right-backs, Fae’s pick on Sunday is uncertain owing to Serge Aurier‘s return from suspension after missing Wednesday’s semi-final win for accumulating yellow cards.

Oumar Diakite — match-winner against Mali — also returns from suspension, but the returnee could make do with a spot on the bench, with Haller and Adingra likely to play from the off and Nicolas Pepe expected to compete with Max Gradel for a spot in the XI.

Nigeria possible starting lineup:
Nwabali; Ajayi, Troost-Ekong, Bassey; Osayi-Samuel, Onyeka, Iwobi, Aina; Simon, Lookman; Osimhen

Ivory Coast possible starting lineup:
Fofana; Aurier, Boly, Ndicka, Konan; Kessie, Seri, Fofana; Pepe, Haller, Adingra

We say: Nigeria 0-1 Ivory Coast

Not only do the hosts have momentum heading into Sunday’s final, Ivory Coast also have the physical edge on the Super Eagles, pointing to a marginal win for the Elephants, who have much more in the tank for the decider.

2023 AFCON: Haller fires Cote d’Ivoire to final

0

Hosts Cote d’Ivoire are through to the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations final after beating DR Congo 1-0 thanks to Sebastien Haller’s goal.

The striker now prepares to face former club Nigeria as the Elephants chase AFCON glory on home soil.

Haller was the matchwinner in Wednesday’s semi-final, superbly flicking in Nicolas Pepe’s cross to break Congolese hearts.

His goal has thus knocked the Leopards out, setting up this fascinating clash in Sunday’s final.

For Haller, facing Nigeria with a trophy on the line represents a remarkable twist of fate. The Borussia Dortmund hitman has established himself in the Elephants after recovering from testicular cancer

Now the 29-year-old returns intent on breaking Nigerian hearts. Haller will spearhead the Cote d’Ivoire attack alongside Pepe as they target a historic triumph.

Victory would spark jubilation in Abidjan given this AFCON is on home soil. After struggling in their group, the Elephants have momentum despite unconvincing performances.

Against DR Congo they rode their luck, with Cedric Bakambu having a goal disallowed. But Haller’s quality shone through as he rifled home to book Cote d’Ivoire’s passage.

Nigeria will prove a sterner test, especially with Haller’s former teammates seeking vengeance. But in this form, the striker threatens to inspire Ivory Coast to their first AFCON crown since 2015.

Dr Bawumia outlines vision for Ghana sports ahead of 2024 election

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has unveiled a comprehensive vision for Ghana’s sports development, emphasising the establishment of the Ghana School Sports Secretariat and forging collaborations with international sports bodies.

Speaking at the UPSA Auditorium in the lead-up to the 2024 elections, Dr. Bawumia outlined his policies and commitment to transforming Ghana into a hub for emerging sports in Africa.

One of the key highlights of his vision is the creation of the Ghana School Sports Secretariat, an agency under the sports ministry, aimed at driving grassroots development through school-based initiatives. Dr. Bawumia emphasized collaboration with stakeholders such as the GES and sports federations to realize this ambitious project.

“My government, as part of a broad sports development vision, will establish the Ghana School Sports Secretariat, which will be an agency under the ministry responsible for sports, in collaboration with other stakeholders such as the GES and sports federations.”

“We have already tried this with the NFL, the governing body for American Football, which agreed to host in Ghana, in 2022, the first ever NFL Flag Football in Africa after my engagement with them. This paved the way for 10 young Ghanaians to be selected to the United States to represent Africa in a global NFL tournament last year.”

“Another set of young Ghanaians, who were picked after the 2nd NFL Africa Football was also held in Ghana last year, are currently in the United States to represent Africa.”

Addressing the challenge of inadequate funding hindering Ghana’s sports development, Dr. Bawumia proposed a shift towards a modern, sustainable funding model.

Dr. Bawumia’s multifaceted approach not only aims to elevate the status of sports within the education system but also positions Ghana as a global player in emerging sports.

2023 AFCON: Nigeria reach final after edging South Africa on penalties

0

Nigeria are through to the AFCON final after a dramatic penalty shootout win against South Africa with the Super Eagles prevailing 4-2 on penalties following a captivating 1-1 draw over 120 minutes.

At the Stade de la Paix in Bouake on Wednesday, this semi-final produced twists and turns fitting of any Nollywood thriller.

Nigeria looked to have won it when Victor Osimhen scored late on, only for VAR to instead award South Africa a lifeline penalty.

Bafana Bafana converted to force extra time before penalties ensued.

There, goalkeeping heroics from Stanley Nwabali gave Nigeria the edge in the shootout. His two saves booked the Super Eagles’ passage to Sunday’s final.

As Nwabali wheeled away in celebration, joy unconfined for Nigeria, this was agony for South Africa.

Bafana Bafana’s keeper Ronwen Williams – who saved four penalties last round – was inconsolable as his AFCON dream died.

Nigeria will face either Cote d’Ivoire DR Congo on Sunday, hoping to capture their fourth African crown.

Nigeria made the early running in a cagey first half. The lively Iwobi brought the best from Williams, whose reflex save kept things goalless. South Africa responded in kind, Evidence Makgopa curling just wide before Percy Tau was thwarted when clean through.

The tension ratcheted after the break as both keepers took center stage. Nwabali acrobatically denied Makgopa once more, while at the other end Williams stood firm to repel Osimhen.

That set the scene for high drama in the closing stages. Nigeria earned a 67th minute penalty when Osimhen was flattened, which Troost-Ekong converted emphatically.

Sensing blood, a frenzied Nigeria pressed for the killer second. They thought they had it through Osimhen, but VAR intervened to spot an earlier foul. South Africa were awarded a lifeline penalty instead, dispatched by Mokoena.

So to extra time, where fatigue stifled attacking fluency. With legs heavy and nerves jangling, a shootout felt inevitable. Williams and Nwabali then took the spotlight.

While Williams correctly guessed the direction of two Nigerian penalties, his hands couldn’t match his intuition. Nwabali showed no such mercy, diving to deny both Mokoena and Mayambela.

As Nigeria soak up the raptures of reaching the final, Williams is left inconsolable. Four days ago he was the hero, now South Africa’s brokenhearted goalkeeper.

Nigeria now stand one win away from a fourth African crown. Propelled by Nwabali’s shootout brilliance, Sunday’s final sees them as a strong contenders for the title.

Ghana captain Andre Ayew scores for Le Havre in French Cup tie

0

Ghana captain Andre Ayew continues to impress for Le Havre, scoring a stunning header in their French Cup match against Strasbourg on Wednesday night.

Despite ultimately losing 3-1, Ayew’s performance was a bright spot for the club, with a Sofascore rating of 7.4 and an impressive 92% accuracy rate in passing.

He also won four ground duels and was fouled three times, showcasing his skill and physicality on the field.

This goal follows two spectacular goals Ayew scored against Lorient two weeks ago, suggesting that he has regained his form and confidence after a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with Ghana.

Le Havre manager Luka Elsner praised Ayew’s leadership qualities and ability to lead the team, stating that he is “capable of leading the group” and has “real talent.”

Ayew’s performance for Le Havre is a positive sign for both the player and the club, and fans will be eagerly watching his progress in future matches.

“I want to win AFCON and World Cup” – Kurt Okraku

0

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has expressed his ambition to lead the country to victory in both the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the FIFA World Cup during his tenure.

Speaking to the media in Kumasi, Okraku emphasised his determination to ensure that the Black Stars win every competition they participate in, including the AFCON and the World Cup.

“I want to win the AFCON. I want to win the World Cup. I want to win every competition Ghana finds itself in,” Okraku declared.

“This is the collective belief and mindset of my fellow Executive Council members.”

Okraku’s statements come in the wake of the Black Stars’ disappointing performance at the ongoing 2023 AFCON tournament, where they were eliminated in the group stages for the second consecutive edition.

Despite this setback, Okraku remains optimistic about the team’s prospects.

Under Okraku’s leadership, the Black Stars have yet to win a game at the AFCON, having exited at the group stage in the last two tournaments.

Similarly, at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the team failed to advance beyond the group stage, earning just three points.

Nevertheless, Okraku remains confident that the team can overcome these challenges and achieve success under his guidance.

“It’s never true we have approached Amir Abdou for Black Stars job” – GFA

0

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has dismissed recent reports suggesting that an offer has been made to coach Amir Abdou for the position of coach of the Black Stars.

Contrary to circulating information, the GFA General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo, clarified in an interview with Akoma FM on Wednesday, February 7, that there has been no approach or offer made to Amir Abdou.

Reports had emerged claiming that the GFA offered Coach Amir Abdou a monthly salary of $45,000 to take charge of the national team.

However, Prosper Harrison Addo refuted these claims, stating, “It’s never true that Ghana has approached Amir Abdou for the Black Stars job. How much did we (Ghana) pay to Akwasi Appiah and Chris Hughton to think of paying Amir Abdou $45,000.”

Following the dismissal of Chris Hughton in the aftermath of Ghana’s disappointing campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the GFA is actively searching for a new head coach.

With reportedly over 600 coaches having applied for the vacant position, the association is in the process of reviewing applications and conducting interviews as part of the selection process.
