La Liga preview, 12-15 August 2022

Los Blancos manager Carlo Ancelotti has already identified Barcelona as likely title rivals this season and has urged his team not to rest on their laurels after a brilliant 2021-22 season in which they captured both La Liga and UEFA Champions League crowns.

“In football, I’m not surprised at all,” said the Italian tactician. “Barça are building a fantastic team, but I’m interested in my team. You always have to respect Barca.”

Barcelona’s continuing evolution under manager Xavi Hernandez, which has seen them bring in Andreas Christensen, Raphinha, Franck Kessie, Robert Lewandowski and Jules Kounde, will have its first competitive test when they face Rayo Vallecano at home on Saturday night.

“I want to have two starting players for every position,” said Xavi. “That is a good problem to have. Last year, we had a small squad. We’re happy to have a more complete squad now.”

Another team to watch this season is Sevilla, who couldn’t quite challenge for the title last season but remain a resourceful and ambitious club. Los Nervionenses will open the new La Liga season with a clash away to Osasuna on Friday night.

“We have to draw conclusions from our pre-season, we have had some tough games, but we were able to learn lessons that will be important for the start of the season,” said manager Julen Lopetegui.

The opening round also features Villarreal away to Real Valladolid, Valencia at home to Girona, Athletic Bilbao welcoming Mallorca to the Basque region, and Atlético Madrid with a derby clash away to Getafe at Coliseum Alfonso Perez on Monday evening.

Akatsi All Stars’ Isaac Selasi Vormawor has said that he will choose Asante Kotoko over Accra Hearts of Oak on any given day.

Selasi was incredible for Akatsi All Stars in the 2021/22 Division One League after 20 goals involvement. He scored 16 goals and made 4 assists in 25 appearances.

The former Liberty Professionals U-20 forward emerged as the best player for Akatsi All Stars following his exploits in the second tier.

There is the possibility of him moving away from the club ahead of the upcoming season.

He has said that, although he is a Hearts fan, he will choose Kotoko over their rivals Hearts of Oak due to the Porcupine Warrior’s style of play.

“Many clubs have shown interest and if the offer is good, it is likely I will leave,” he told Asempa FM.

“I am a Hearts of Oak fan, but I will choose Kotoko over Hearts. I have watched the two clubs, but I believe Kotoko will be the best option for me.

” Kotoko’s style of play suits me and I will choose them over Hearts on any day.”

Selasi, who used to be a goalkeeper, has had stints with Great Wonders, Bright Future FC, Sporting Mirren and Inter Allies.

Hearts of Oak have officially announced that midfielder Daniel Kordie has signed a new two-year contract ahead of the 2022 23 season.

The former club deputy captain has not played a single game for the team in the past three years due to injuries.

He signed a two-year contract with the team, and Hearts of Oak has confirmed that he has fully recovered from his injury and is prepared for the upcoming season.

“We are happy to announce that Daniel Kordie will be with the Phobia Family for the next 2 years. He has fully recovered.”, the club confirmed.

Na God FC defeat Port City to earn promotion to the Division One League

Great Accra Region-based side Na God Fc have secured promotion to the Division One League after beating Port City FC 2-1 in the second game of the three-way all-play-all league to determine the replacement of demoted Inter Allies in the Division One League.

Na God came into the game in high spirits after winning their first game of the playoff 3-0 against Volta Region-based Agbogba FC on Wednesday.

The Dome-based side earned the desired result as they came from a goal down to beat Port City 2-1.

The result means Na God emerge winners of the playoff with 6 points, irrespective of the result of the the final game of the playoff between Port City and Agbogba.

Na God will play in Zone One of the 2022/23 Division One League which will kick off on the weekend of Friday, September 30 to Monday, October 3, 2022 across the three Zones.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is expected to announce the fixtures of the new season next week.

BREAKING NEWS: CAS temporarily lift Richmond Lamptey’s ban

The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has lifted the ban on Asante Kotoko midfielder who was involved in the match-fixing scandal between Ashantigold and Inter Allies.

This means, Lamptey can register and play for the Porcupines for the upcoming season as CAS looks into the matter.

Twenty-one players were banned by the Ghana Football Association following the outcome of an investigations into the game between the Miners and the Eleven is to One boys at the end of the 2019/20 season.

In May, Lamptey was handed a 30-month ban from all football-related activities over his involvement in the Ashanti Gold vs Inter Allies match-fixing scandal in the 2020/21 season.

The 25-year-old was on the books of Inter Allies at the time and was part of the players who featured in the controversial 7-0 defeat to Ashanti Gold in that fixture.

A ruling by the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) Disciplinary Committee on the issue said Lamptey’s sanction will take effect from next season.

However, after an appeal by the club and its lawyer, Nino Effori, Lamptey has been cleared to play temporarily until the full merits of the case is determined.

Dear Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku. 

To borrow the cliché in our football fraternity, I bring you sporting compliments. I hope this letter finds you in good health. Regardless of your challenges, especially with Covid-19 a few months after assuming office, you’ve not been deterred. That’s good. 

It’s also good that under your leadership, we’ve completed, for the first time, an entire league season since #12 struck in June 2018. I further applaud your administration for sealing some decent sponsorships for the Ghana Premier League (GPL) and the Women’s Premier League recently. 

I know you want the growth of Ghana football. I recall your well-delivered speech at the 26th Ordinary Congress of the GFA in August 2020 – where you appealed to members to desist from badmouthing their product. You seemed indignant that a few people thwarted your efforts through negative commentaries. 

“There are a few of us who go out of this family and go out to the public space to malign your product, my product, your business…” you stated. “I go to corporate Ghana daily preaching Ghana football; yet some of us, just a few of us, damage the image of the product…We must say no to such people,” you added. 

You were right. I’ve held that no group of people disparage our football more than some of your own. At times, I wonder why you, who’ve invested so much in the game, would turn around either inadvertently or consciously to destroy it through your conduct – words, actions, inactions, etc. 

“We must say no to such people,” you said, Mr President. In this case, saying no means letting GPL fans know the outcome of the GFA’s summoning of Albert Commey on his allegation that there was multiple match-fixing on the final day of the 2021/22 season. 

Silence, not yours, Mr President, but the GFA’s silence for more than six weeks now does no good to the GPL. A respected member of the FA like Albert Commey can’t make such a damning claim, and months on, and indeed, a few weeks to the start of a new season, the GFA is still silent on the allegation. 

It’s nothing personal. It’s all in the interest of the game. What has become of Albert Commey’s allegation? Did his allegation has any substance? You punished coaches for certain remarks; would Albert Commey be punished? Was his allegation frivolous? Was it therefore dismissed? Is it being probed? GPL fans must know. 

In the spirit and letter of your 26th Ordinary Congress speech, which fervently prayed on your own to reject negative remarks on our football because of the damage it does, I humbly ask: What’s the status of Albert Commey’s multiple match-fixing allegations?

Former Ghana international, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu have reached an agreement to join Ghana Premier League side Accra Great Olympics FC.

The 31-year-old after passing his medical will pen one-year deal with the Dade Boys as he aims at re-launching his career and move back to Europe.

The former Asante Kotoko player has been without a club for one season and over since leaving Italian outfit Hellas Verona.

Olympics are keen on building a formidable side for the upcoming season and have replaced James Akaminko who left for Tanzanian Premier League side Azam FC with Badu.

Agyemang spent almost a decade at Udinese where he established himself as one of the club’s best midfielders.

He also had stints with Hellas Verona, Bursaspor, and other clubs.

With the Black Stars, Badu made 78 appearances and scored 11 goals.

GHALCA Top 6 tournament to kick-off next week at Accra Sports Stadium

The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) has revealed that the Top 6 tournament will take place at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The tournament which precedes the season has been scheduled for August 17, 2022.

The tournament is designed for the Top 6 clubs from the 2021-22 Ghana Premier League campaign but champions Asante Kotoko SC have opted out.

They have been replaced with Berekum Chelsea who finished 7th of the league standings.

The remaining teams for the pre-season tournament are Medeama SC, Bechem United, Karela United, Great Olympics and Hearts of Oak.

A press launch for the tournament will be held on August 12, 2022 at the Secretariat of GHALCA in Accra.

GHALCA G6 TOURNAMENT IN FULL DETAILS.

Ghana Premier League giants, Hearts of Oak have held talks with Amanda Akuokor Clinton over the vacant Chief Executive Officer [CEO] role.

The Phobian Club have been without a CEO following the sudden resignation of Frederick Moore.

With the new football season set to kick off in less than two months, the club will hope to settle on a new CEO.

3 Music boss, Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu was linked to the vacant job ahead of the new football season.

However, according to multiple reports in the local media, the leadership of the club have held talks with the renowned lawyer to take up the position, and remains favorite for the job.

Clinton is famously known for contesting the 2019 Ghana Football Association [GFA] presidential race.

However, Hearts of Oak will represent the country in the 2022/23 CAF Confederations Cup having won the FA Cup last season.

The 2020/21 Ghana Premier League champions will play either AS Douanes (Burkina Faso) or ASR Bamako (Mali) in the second preliminary round of the Confederation Cup.

Samuel Boadu and his charges will also begin their 2022/23 betPawa Ghana Premier League campaign with an away game against Aduana Stars at the Nana Agyemang Badu Park.

Transfer News: Asante Kotoko reach agreement to sign former midfielder

Ghana Premier League holders Asante Kotoko have reached an agreement to sign former midfielder Umar Bashiru from Karela United.

The talented midfielder has agreed to join the Porcupines on a two-year deal after successful negotiations, pending medicals and official announcement.

Umar Bashiru is making a return to Asante Kotoko after an unsuccessful spell in the 2018/19 season. The midfielder joined the Porcupine Warriors from WAFA in 2018.

However, his contract with the club was mutually terminated after he was deemed surplus requirement by then head coach Kjetil Zachariason.

Umar Bashiru signed for Karela United at the beginning of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season. The 25-year has gone to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in the country.

In the just ended season, he made 33 league appearances for the team, scored 15 goals, provided 4 assists and won 4 man of the match awards.
