0

Newly-promoted Ghana Premier League outfit, FC Samartex 1996 have announced the signing of defender Larry Sumaila.

The right-back joined the side on a three-year from Ghanaian giants Hearts of Oak on a free transfer.

Sumaila failed to command a first-team position as he faced a stiff opposition from Samuel Inkoom and Fatawu Mohammed, hence deciding against extending his contract with the Phobians.

He is expected to use his experience to help the new side as coach Annor Walker will be aiming to maintain their status at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

” We are excited to announce the signing of experienced right-back, Larry Sumaila on a permanent deal.

“Sumaila who joins us on a free transfer last played for Hearts of Oak in the most recent season,” a statement on the club’s official Twitter handle read.

Kotoku Royals new coach Seth Ablade targets top six finish

New head coach of Kotoku Royals FC, Seth Ablade, has promised to ensure the club finishes in the first six positions on the betPawa Premier League table at the end of their debut season in the Ghana topflight.

Ablade, who signed a two-year contract with the club on August 1, was previously the Technical Director of Medeama SC but parted ways with the Tarkwa-based club after seven months.

He will be assisted by former Asante Kotoko and Togo international, Raphael Akakpo Patron, who joined the club last week.

Ablade, who holds a UEFA Pro License certificate in coaching and certificate in sports science, told the Daily Graphic on the sidelines of a justify-your-inclusion exercise by the club in Koforidua that he would build a side that would be one of the most feared in the league in the coming season.

He is currently observing about 70 new and old players available to him and plans to select between 25 and 30 players at the end of the trials for registration ahead of the 2022/23 betPawa Premier League season which starts next month.

“We are in the process of building a strong team for the upcoming Premier League, one which our opponents will dread to play against.”

“I can promise them [opponents] that Kotoku Royals will turn the Oda Sports Stadium, our home grounds, into a waterloo for visiting clubs and ensure we collect maximum points in our home matches,” Coach Ablade said.

He expressed his gratitude to the management, players and supporters of Kotoku Royals for their support and promised to prove equal to the task ahead.

Coach Ablade, 39, previously managed Finnish third tier side, FC Jazz and Rotuaarin Pallo after acquiring his coaching license.

A member of the Black Starlets team that won bronze at the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Cup in New Zealand, he spent the best part of his playing career with premier division clubs in Poland, Albania and Finland where he lived for nearly two decades.

‘Reserve players of our days were better than the starters of today’ – Kotoko legend, Ntow Gyan

Asante Kotoko and Black Stars player, Kofi Ntow Gyan has described the current generation of footballers, especially in Ghana are lazy.

The Kotoko legend asserted that the bench team of their heydays are relatively better than the first team players of the current generation of players.

Speaking on Kessben TV, Ntow Gyan noted that the current generation of players does not train enough to possess the requisite qualities of a good footballer.

“The current generation of footballers do not train well. The players who were on the bench during our time are far better than this current crop of footballers.”

If you watch them play, you see they don’t have the requisite stamina and energy to play. This situation is so because most of them are very lazy”

“The coaches should somehow be blamed. They can’t transform a player. You may be having about 30 players but there will be no striker, as a coach you should be able to transform some of the players to forwards” He said.

Premier League: Blues, Spurs set for early season thriller

0

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to a classic Premier League rivalry, as Chelsea welcomes Tottenham Hotspur to Stamford Bridge on the evening of Sunday 14 August 2022.

DStv and GOtv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.

Both the Blues and Spurs are hoping to step up their games and challenge Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the log, making this clash a real six-pointer and a chance to send a statement early in the campaign.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel will be hoping that new signings Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly can make a major impact in this clash against Tottenham.

“[Sterling] had chances, very heavily involved in other chances, it was a good performance,” the German said of the player signed for £47.5m from Man City. On Koulibaly, Tuchel added: “He is a very, very good signing. A strong personality, a strong player. I am happy that he could play minutes now. He’s getting fitter and fitter which is very important for us for the start of the season.”

Tottenham’s Antonio Conte, meanwhile, says he will be happy to extend his time with the London club if they continue on their path of building towards success: “I have to be honest. In my career the contract was never important. I didn’t need to sign contracts for one, two or three years. For the club it could also be a weight,” he explained.

“I’m happy, I’m happy. We’re working really well together. It’s not that one year on the contract more or less can change the situation. For sure we want to continue to improve, to build something important for this club. If the idea continues to be in this way, there will be zero problems to continue my life in Tottenham because I stay well and I like this group of players.”

Key players

Raheem Sterling – The English forward was a big-money signing from Manchester City and is looking to endear himself to Chelsea fans – there would be no better way to do exactly that than to score in a win over their hated rivals Tottenham at Stamford Bridge.

Harry Kane – Tottenham’s captain and key player will be hoping that this season brings success in terms of challenging for silverware. If Spurs can claim Chelsea’s scalp away from home, it will send a major statement of intent.

Head-to-head stats

In head-to-head stats, Chelsea and Tottenham have met in 173 matches across all competitions since 1909. The Blues have claimed 77 wins compared to 55 for Spurs, while 41 games have been drawn.

Chelsea won all four matches against Spurs last season, winning 3-0 away and 2-0 at home in the Premier League, as well as 2-0 at home and 1-0 away in the two legs of the Carabao Cup semifinal.

Battles to watch

Thomas Tuchel v Antonio Conte – Tuchel’s more reserved and considered demeanour contrasts sharply with Conte’s voracious sideline antics, but the two managers have similar tactical approaches.

Kalidou Koulibaly v Son Heung-min – Koulibaly has long been considered one of European football’s best defenders, but he will have to be at his best to quell the threat of Spurs’ mobile and intelligent Son.

N’Golo Kante v Yves Bissouma – Kante is the king of central midfielders, but Bissouma is a potential successor to that throne and could end up being one of the best signings of the season if he can settle quickly at Tottenham.

Serie A preview, 13-15 August 2022

0

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to Round 1 action from the 2022-23 Serie A, with matches scheduled to run from Saturday 13 to Monday 15 August 2022.

DStv and GOtv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.

The new Serie A season opens on the early evening of Saturday 13 August with defending champions AC Milan welcoming Udinese to the San Siro. The Rossoneri will be looking to get off to a flying start in the 2022-23 campaign.

Milan fullback Alessandro Florenzi, whose efforts on loan last season helped earn a permanent move from Roma, believes the team spirit and belief gained from winning the Scudetto will help the team in red and black.

“The coach [Stefano Pioli] told us something, ‘success changes people.’ We have to make sure that it doesn’t happen to us,” said Florenzi. “The coach is very good at this. The Scudetto magic is there, I feel it, however, it must be nurtured. Otherwise, it’ll go out.”

One of Milan’s main rivals for the title will be Internazionale, who will be away to Lecce later on Saturday night, while capital city clubs Roma and Lazio will be looking to make strong statements on Sunday with their matches against Salernitana (away) and Bologna (home) respectively.

Roma boast an exciting attacking line-up, with Tammy Abraham joined upfront by Paulo Dybala, who was signed as a free agent. Abraham believes his decision to join the Giallorossi a year ago was the best of his career thus far.

“The best decision of my life was coming here. No rush to get back into the Premier League. I want to score one more goal than last season,” said the English striker. “I hope I can beat my personal goal record. Without haste, however, because I don’t feel yet one hundred percent ready. On the other hand, at this point in pre-season, no one is.”

The opening round of Serie A wraps up on Monday with a pair of matches, as Verona host Napoli, before Juventus welcome Sassuolo to the Allianz Stadium in Turin. Bianconeri boss Massimiliano Allegri says his team has a “duty” to win back the title this term.

“Juventus, as always, want to achieve every objective,” the boss explained. “This summer has seen some top players arrive: some with experience, some young. Plus, it’s the second season so we are already starting from a good base. After a trophy-less season, for the first time in 10 years, we have a duty to win the Scudetto.”
