Transfer Update: Esso lands in Accra to complete Hearts of Oak move

Ghana Premier League giant, Hearts of Oak is in an advanced talks to sign Eric Esso, brother of former Phobian Joseph Esso.

The Phobians were looking to snap up Olympics midfielder Razak Kassim but the Dade club aren’t willing to release the player to their rivals. However, the MTN FA Cup champions have identified Ashantigold’s Eric Esso as an alternative for their defensive midfield role.

Ahead of the start of the 2022/2023 Ghana Premier League season, Hearts of Oak is hoping for more success and has hence been making the necessary preparations in the last couple of weeks.

Baba Sadiq NOT interested in the Hearts of Oak Managing Director job anymore – [Here’s why]

Baba Sadiq, the Chief Executive Officer of 3Music has pulled out from the race to become the Hearts of Oak Managing Director.

Hearts of Oak have been without a managing director since the departure of Frederick Moore in November 2020.

Sadiq was touted as the man to lead the role but has surprisingly pulled out.

According to him, he has opted out of the race after the club showed little interest in engaging his highly sought-after services.

He added that he has decided to focus on other aspects of his career with politics being his next move.

“In fact I considered it. When they opened it, I also duly shared my CV. But unfortunately, the engagement hasn’t happened at the time I was expecting it to happen. So as of now for my part, it is off the books,” he told Accra based Asempa FM.

“Because of how I do my things, I expected that the engagement would have happened earlier than usual. Mind you, if I take the Hearts of Oak job, it would be at the expense of other career choices I would have made. I was keen on bringing in some magic and verve into the extensive work that has been done by the board. And, the Executive Chairman.

“For the period it was delayed, there were other considerations and as it stands now, I am looking to contest the primaries in Okaikwei Central for my party. And, I have already started work in that regard, pending the official opening of the process by my party,” he added.

Former Hearts of Oak striker, Abednego Tetteh is on the verge of joining King Faisal in the ongoing transfer window.

The 30-year-old will pen a one-year deal with the Inshallah lads should he pass his medical examination after parting ways with the Phobians before the start of last season.

Tetteh struggled to make an impact during his time with the Phobians, where he made only five appearances for Hearts who won the domestic double thus, the Ghana Premier League and the MTN FA Cup.

His contract with the Accra-based side was due to expire in 2023 but both parties reached an agreement to terminate the deal.

The Porcupine Warriors are on the verge of terminating their contract the Cameroonian defender following a new discovery

Asante Kotoko are contemplating on terminating the contract of Cameroonian defender Koualao Dane Djomian Thomas Pele after just five days at the club, according to former Communications director Obed Acheampong.

Rumours have been flying that the former Dragon de Youande star who penned a three-year deal on Saturday after perfectly passing the club’s medical processes is not fully fit.

Although, the club’s doctors initially cleared him of all injuries, it has been revealed that the player hid a chronic injury he sustained in the past and that has raised a lot of doubts about his fitness and the quality of job done by the medical team.

“Asante Kotoko complete the signing of Cameroonian defender Thomas Pele. The player joins the club on a three-year deal, ” the club wrote on social media last weekend.

However, according to former communication director Acheampong, Kotoko have already lined up Pele’s replacement as they believe he may have to leave.

Koualao Dane Djomian Thomas Pele is among the six players Kotoko have signed including goalkeeper Pouaty Moise D’assise from Cameroon and Ugandan striker Steven Mukwala, Zeze from Ivory Coast.

The club is also expected to announce the signing of Enoch Morrison from city rivals King Faisal this week after the player has been training with the first team.

Kotoko, who will begin their title defence on September 9 against debutants Nsoatreman FC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium before they play King Faisal and Hearts of Oak in Kumasi derby and Super Clash respectively.

Forward Isaac Mintah has joined Aduana Stars from Division One League side New Edubiase United.

The 23 year old signed a three-year contract with the ‘ Ogya boys’, having successfully passed his medicals on Tuesday.

The young talented player is expected to join his teammates on August 22 and continue preparations ahead of the Betpawa Premier League 2022-23 season

Mintah was in sizzling form for Edubiase, scoring 23 goals in 23 appearances in last season’s second tier competition.

The National Sports Authority have said that they have completed all renovation works that will make the Baba Yara sports stadium eligible to host CAF games.

CAF apparently notified both Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak that they will be unable to honor their respective African matches at their traditional home grounds due to the inability of the Ghana Football Association [GFA] to submit a report on the inspections done by the association at their venues.

For the Baba Yara stadium, as per the GFA inspection, the Stadium was still going under renovation works to meet the CAF standard.

Few days after the CAF communique, the management of the Baba Yara stadium say, all the needed works have been completed for the stadium to meet the CAF requirement and thus look forward to a late inspection by the CAF inspection team to approve the stadium for CAF games, particularly Asante Kotoko’s Champions League campaign.

Ex-sports minister not in support of Asamoah Gyan’s Black Stars return

Former Deputy Sports Minister Vincent Oppong Asamoah opposes Asamoah Gyan’s desire to return to the Black Stars for the 2022 World Cup.

Gyan, now 36, is aiming to return to the senior national team after being sidelined for three years.

He hasn’t been called up since playing against Tunisia at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

In addition, Gyan has been plagued by injuries and has not played in a competitive match since May 5, 2021.

“Talent wise, everything is there already, so I just have to prepare physically,” he told the BBC World Service.

“The World Cup is every footballer’s dream. I think I’ve got a bit of energy left in me to prove myself once again.

“I’ve been out for almost two years now due to injuries but I just need to get my body back in shape. It’s an eight-week programme and according to my physical instructor, I’m improving faster than he thought.

“Then I must see how my body reacts to playing competitive football.”

However, the former DORMAA WEST Constituency MP believes Gyan’s time with the Black Stars has come to an end.

“I believe he has done his job for the national team. He should know that he is a legend for Ghana but on the field of play, I believe he has finished paying his dues,” he told Onua Sports.

Ghana will face Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay in Qatar.

Ghana striker Augustine Okrah elated with debut goal for Simba SC in Tanzania league

Ghana forward, Augustine Okrah has expressed his delight after netting his debut goal in Simba SC’s 3-0 victory over Geita Gold on opening day of 2022/23 Tanzanian Premier League season.

The 28-year-old was named on the substitute bench but was introduced after Simba were forced to make a change early in the game.

Okrah opened the scoring with a nice free-kick from outside the box by the 36th minute before Moses Phiri added another goal on 61st minute to put Simba in the driving seat.

Okrah made the difference on the day when he was brought down n the Geita penalty area to earn the penalty for Simba SC on the 61st minute.

“It always feel good to announce your presence. I’m elated to have scored my debut goal and also win a penalty in my first-ever Premier League game for Simba SC in Tanzania. I’m hoping for more through Christ who strengthens man, ” Okrah Twitted on Thursday.

The former Ghana Premier League top scorer joined Simba ahead of the season from Bechem United.

“My departure is in the best interest of the club” — Prosper Narteh Ogum

Coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum has indicated in his goodbye message to Asante Kotoko that, his decision to resign was in the best interest of the club.

According to him, he acted with Kotoko’s best interests in mind the day he decided to move away from Baba Yara Stadium.

Ogum’s surprise resignation came just five weeks after he led Kotoko to win a record-extending 24th Ghana Premier League title, with a colourful coronation in their final home match against Elmina Sharks at the Baba Yara Stadium on June 12.

Reports emerged that the Coach’s decision to unilaterally end his contract with the Porcupine Warriors after only one season came as a surprise to both the club’s management members and the board following a disagreement over the recruitment of players for the forthcoming season.

Ogum officially resigned from the club last week after submitting his resignation letter to the club officials after a meeting.

Below is his farewell message to the club;

“My journey at Kotoko was short lived but the varied experience during this period will always remain dear. The passion, warmth and love I was welcomed with made me feel at home. Indeed, my dream of becoming a Kotoko coach, which I constantly told my students, had come to reality. Though enthused about joining one of the biggest clubs in Africa I knew I was brought there for a reason, the mission was to deliver,” Ogum said.

“Our journey, as a team, met some obstacles when we lost some matches and missed out on trophies, but we continually enjoyed the unflinching support of the fabulous family and soared. The backing of our supporters over memorable wins at Dormaa, Tarkwa and Sogakope made us feel like champions. Our efforts were crowned with winning the Ghana Premier League after eight (8) years making Kotoko the best club for the season.”

“Taking Kotoko to Africa and defending the league trophy was my aim, but it is regrettable that I must leave midstream. I believe my departure is in the best interest of the club.”

“I extend my warmest appreciation to His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Board and Management of the club for the opportunity, belief and trust reposed in me and my team and made my dream a reality. To the technical and Medical Team, the Legends as well as the Playing Body, I am most grateful for your support.”

To the supporters, I doff my hat to you. You truly stood with me and sincerely inspired me. I have always felt loved, cherished and valued. Your passion for the club was my inspiration. If any action of mine caused any pain, I am sorry.”

Kotoko have begun pre-season training under the direction of youth coach Abdul Gazele. They will travel to Turkey to continue their season preparations.

Coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum has sent a farewell message to Asante Kotoko’s board, management, players, technical team and fans following his departure from the club.

The sports psychologist tendered his resignation letter last week despite having one year left.

In his farewell message, Prosper Ogum revealed out his departure is for the good of the club.

He went further to thank Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the club faithful and the management for the love shown to him during his stay.

He indicated that he hopes to return to the club in the future.
