It will only take smart players to adapt to Seydou Zerbo’s system at Kotoko – Eric Bekoe

Former Asante Kotoko forward Eric Bekoe has opened up on the appointment of Burkinabe coach Seydou Zerbo as the club’s new coach.

The Porcupine Warriors appointed the former Burkina Faso gaffer last month to replace Prosper Narteh Ogum who resigned at the end of the 2021/22 season.

The 59-year-old signed a one-year contract with the Porcupine Warriors with an option for another year.

Speaking to Sunyani-based Union FM, Bekoe admitted the departure of Ogum will have a negative impact on Kotoko, saying it will take smart players to adapt to the style of the new trainer.

“On paper, it will have a negative impact on the players, if Seidu Seydou is bringing a new system, it will take smart players to adapt to his system,” he said.

The Porcupine Warriors will hope to see off Burkinabe side RC Kadiogo to qualify to the next stage of the CAF Champions League campaign after beating the Burkinabe side 1-0 in Benin on Monday evening with the return fixture scheduled for September 18 at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Manchester United Supporters Union of Ghana gave their former left-back a memorable welcome at the Kotoka International Airport with singing and dancing.

Evra who was amazed by the fans took pictures with the fans before leaving the airport for his hotel.

The former France international is expected to tour parts of Ghana as part of his four days stay in the Motherland.

The UEFA Champions League winner will also visit his hometown, Dakar, in Senegal, Ivory Coast and Nigeria as part of his tour.

Match Report: Berekum Chelsea secure impressive victory against King Faisal

Berekum Chelsea were off to a flying start as they scored in each half to beat King Faisal 2-0 on Match Day One of the betPawa Premier League at the Agyemang Badu Park at Dormaa.

The former League Champions took the lead in the 10th minute through Mezack Afriyie as he got on the end of Dramani Awuah’s flick on before slotting home. The Chelsea attack took full advantage of a defensive error in the King Faisal half before smashing home for the opener.

Thirteen minutes into the second half Berekum Chelsea increased the tally after Dramani Awuah again took on two players in the King Faisal defence before planting the ball at the back of the net in the 58th minute.

The visitors didn’t pose much threat to the home side as Chelsea held on to win 2-0 – their first match of the season at the Nana Agyemang Badu Park at Dormaa.

Match Report: Isaac Oppong scores in injury-time as Kotoko pip RC Kadiogo in Champions League

Isaac Oppong produced a brilliant stoppage-time winner against RC Kadiogo in the first leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary round to give Kotoko a rare moment of cheer at after so many wasted chances in the game.

Oppong scored two minutes into stoppage time, weaving his way through the Kadiogo defense to slot home with his left foot to secure a 1-0 win.

The narrow win goes in favour of Asante Kotoko especially as the club will have home advantage for the reverse fixture.

That game is scheduled to be played on Sunday, September 18, 2022.

As already announced by the club, Asante Kotoko will host RC Kadiogo at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Asante Kotoko are expected to arrive in Ghana on Tuesday. The team will immediately return to training to prepare for the crucial second-leg clash against the Burkinabe opponent.

Coach Seydou Zerbo has named Asante Kotoko’s starting XI for their Caf Champions League preliminary round first leg tie against RC Kadiogo of Burkina Faso in Benin.

Kickoff is 4pm.

The Porcupines would want to record a win over the Burkinabe champions to boost their confidence ahead of the return leg next week in Kumasi.

Several key players are out of the game. Yet Zerbo does have capable men to get the job done. Justice Blay, Franck Mbella, Amankona, Sheriff Mohammed, etc players could not make the squad for this game.

Seven players have been handed debuts in African Club-competition matches.

Goalkeeper Danlad is in posts and will be flanked by Nettry, Sheriff, Mubarik and Tedeku at the back.
