Ghana grab slim win over minnows Nicaragua in pre-World Cup friendly

Ghana made heavy work of beating minnow Nicaragua 1-0 in an international friendly to wrap up their September preparations for the upcoming 2022 Fifa World Cup set to take place in under two months’ time.

But Ghana could only manage a solitary goal victory despite a dominant performance at Estadio Francisco Artés Carrasco in Lorca, Spain.

Teenager Fatawu Issahaku netted the only goal of the game 10 minutes before halftime with a rasping left-footed shot from outside the penalty area.

The Black Stars, who will take on Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay in Group H at the World Cup finals, wasted a plethora of chances in an unconvincing performance against the central American nation, who are 79 places behind them in the Fifa rankings.

Ghana will have one more friendly before the World Cup, against Switzerland in Abu Dhabi on November 17, one week before their opening game against Portugal in Doha.

Otto Addo makes several changes as he names Ghana starting line-up for Nicaragua clash

The head coach of the Ghana national team, Otto Addo has named his starting eleven for the clash against Nicaragua this evening.

The Black Stars return to action today after suffering a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Brazil last Friday.

That game played in Le Havre, France, saw the North American side dominating Ghana throughout the 90 minutes.

After days of training to prepare for today’s contest against Nicaragua, Ghana coach Otto Addo and his technical team are hoping to see an improved competitive performance from the Black Stars.

Today’s pre-world cup friendly match for Ghana is being played in Lorca, Spain. Kick-off is at 18:00gmt.

While we build up to the encounter, Ghana head coach Otto Addo has named his starting eleven to play against the opponent.

The team is made up of a lot of changes from the first eleven that started the Brazil game last Friday.

Hearts of Oak U20 head Samuel Nii Noi has been appointed to take charge of the first team until a substantive head coach is hired, the club announced on Tuesday.

The Phobians parted company with head coach Samuel Boadu on Tuesday after a terrible start to the 2022-23 Ghana Premier League campaign.

Hearts have managed to pick only two points from three matches since the beginning of the season having tasted defeat on the opening to Aduana Stars and drawing against Great Olympics and Asante Kotoko SC.

Moreover, the Phobians have failed to register a single win in their last eight matches in the Ghanaian top-flight with three draws and five defeats.

Nii Noi who has been in the position on temporal basis before the appointment of Boadu in March 2021 takes charge again until a new coach is appointed.

The young tactician will be assisted by former Hearts goalkeeper Benjamin Mensah.

Reports on Tuesday suggest that Hearts are set to appoint Dutchman Erik Van der Meer as the next head coach of the club.

Van der Meer was present at the Babayara Stadium in Kumasi when the Rainbows drew 1-1 against bitterest rivals Kotoko in the Ghana league.

OFFICIAL: Hearts Of Oak part ways with coach Samuel Boadu and backroom staff

Ghanaian giants Hearts of Oak have parted ways with coach Samuel Boadu and his backroom staff to ‘chart a new direction’, the club announced on Tuesday.

Boadu, 36, and his entire backroom staff including assistant coach Hama Obeng and goalkeepers coach Eric Amponsah have have left the club in a dramatic turn of event.

The young gaffer left the job following a meeting with board chairman Togbe Afede on Tuesday amid a torrent of criticism over the side’s downward spiral.

“Accra Hearts of Oak has decided to part ways with the entire technical team of the senior team led by Coach Samuel Boadu with immediate effect. The club is of the opinion that there is the need for a new direction and the energy to ensure its broader objectives are achieved and it feels the time for that new direction is now,” a club statement read.

Nico Williams explains why he chose Spain over Ghana

Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams has explained why he chose to represent the Spanish national team ahead of Ghana.

Nico Williams, who’s the youngster brother of Inaki Williams is eligible to represent Ghana and Spain.

The youngster opted to play for Spain and made his debut in a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland in the Nations League on Saturday, while his senior brother also made his debut for Ghana in a 3-0 defeat to Brazil in a friendly encounter on Friday.

“It was a natural decision, everyone went their own way and made their decision carefully. I am very happy that my brother is in Ghana, I wish him things to go well, that he can have a great World Cup and achieve the highest goals,” said Nico Williams.

“I have always been clear that I wanted to be here and I am very happy that Luis Enrique has given me this opportunity, I hope to take advantage of it. As everyone knows, I want to be with the Spanish team and be better, show that I’m worth being here” he added.

Nico Williams went on to reveal that the trip to Ghana this summer played a major role in his brother’s decision to represent the Ghana national team.

“My brother thought a lot about that, about whether to go with the national team or with Ghana, but what marked him was the trip we made there in the summer.”

“Seeing all the people made him take the big step of opting for the Ghana national team, assuming that role in which I hope he will do well and score many goals” Nico Williams noted.

Nico Williams and Inaki Williams are likely to represent Spain and Ghana respectively at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Should that materialize, they’ll become the second brothers to represent two different countries at the World Cup.

Nicaragua game won’t be as tough as Brazil – Otto Addo

Ghana’s International friendly against Nicaragua, will not be as challenging as the game against Brazil, that’s according to head coach, Otto Addo.

The Black Stars face Nicaragua on Tuesday evening in Spain, after losing 3-0 to Brazil last Friday.

The games are part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2022 World Cup in Spain and Otto Addo is looking to use Tuesday’s game to try out different systems with the team.

“It’s another good test match for us, just to find each other the patterns, prime connections and we are happy to be here to play an opponent like Nicaragua.” Otto Addo said in his pre-match press conference.

“We hopefully can try a lot things. I don’t think it will be as tough as the match against Brazil but it’s a different tough opponent because they have proved in previous games that they can harm other teams so it’s going to be interesting,” He said.

The game against Nicaragua will kick-off at 18:00 GMT in Lorca, Spain.

The Black Stars of Ghana will come up against Nicaragua in an International friendly game at the Estadio Francisco Artés Carrasco based in Lorca on Tuesday, September 26.

Ghana are hoping to put their preparations for the 2022 World Cup on track after losing 3-0 to giants Brazil at the Stade Oceane in Le Harve on Friday night.

The Black Stars will head into the game without the services of Thomas Partey. The Arsenal midfielder was granted permission by the Ghana FA to travel back to London for further assessment after picking up a suspected knee injury in the warmup of the defeat to Brazil.

In spite of his absence, head coach Otto Addo has a decent team to outwit Nicaragua.

Otto Addo is expected to make numerous changes to the team that lost 3-0 to Brazil. The former Borussia Dortmund midfielder is expected to maintain the 3-4-3 formation that changed the dimension of the game in the second half against Brazil.

Goalkeeper Richard Ofori who hasn’t featured for the team since September 2021 against South Africa is expected to start to start in goal.

Mohammed Salisu who’s largely credited for Ghana’s decent display in the second half against Brazil is expected to start in defense, alongside Daniel Amartey and Alexander Djiku.

Tariq Lamptey is expected to earn his first start, starting at right wing back. Gideon Mensah is expected to occupy the left wing back position, while Baba Iddrisu and Daniel Kofi-Kyereh occupy the midfield positions.

The attack is expected to be led by Inaki Williams, Antoine Semenyo and Osman Bukari.

The game will kickoff at 6:00pm GMT and will be telecasted on Max TV, GFA App and Star Times Adepa channel.

In an extensive interview with Qatari based news outlet Al Jazeera, Black Stars Captain Andre Dede Ayew addressed several topics bordering on Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team’s participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

This year’s World Cup is set to take place in Qatar and is the last edition to have 32 nations compete in before the number of participating nation’s balloons to 48 beginning with the 2026 edition.

Responding to a question about the call up of players who recently switched their international commitment from European countries to Ghana, the former Swansea City forward said:

“The newcomers are talented, but we already have a strong team that qualified for the World Cup, so every position is competitive. Apart from senior players who may have an advantage, I believe no one is guaranteed a place in the squad just yet”.

Ghana plays Nicaragua on Tuesday, September 27 at 18:00 GMT in Spain after losing 0-3 to Brazil in friendly games ahead of the World Cup.

The Black Stars play Switzerland in the last of three friendly games before taking on Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay in Group H in Qatar.
