CHAN 2022: ‘Expect different attitude from Black Galaxies on Thursday’ – Annor Walker

Coach Annor Walker is confident his team is determined to put up a different attitude when they come up against Sudan in their crucial TotalEnergies African Nations Championship(CHAN) second group C match on Thursday.

According to the Head Coach, the team is poised to put the defeat to Madagascar behind them and turn their focus on Thursday’s second group match.

The Black Galaxies lost the opening Group C game against Madagascar 2-1 at the Stade Chahid Hamlaoui.

Speaking with ghanafa.org a day after the match, Coach Walker said though he unhappy with the result on Sunday, he believes the team was poised to win against Sudan to secure a place in the next round of the competition.

“I wasn’t happy with my team especially in the first half. We did not ply the way we are used to. Our players were not mobile and after the changes in the second half we played better “ Annor Walker said.

“There were not a better side. We lost because we didn’t play the way we normally play. In the second half when we made our changes you see that we dominated the game but we failed to take our chances and that caused us”

He also refuted suggestions that the cold weather conditions in Constantine may have been affected his team.

He added that the team will now focus and approach Thursday’s game with all seriousness.

“The weather the was okay compared to the previous days since we arrived in Constantine. Though it was quite cold.”

“After the game, the players were really down because we lost the game. We have met as a team and I can see how focused they are for Thursday’s game. “

“They know what is at stake on Thursday. They are ready and their attitude will be different on Thursday”, he reiterated.

The game on Thursday will be played at the Stade Chahid Hamlaoui at 8pm(7pm GMT).

Ghana has been awarded three points for its final group match against Morocco which was scheduled for Monday, January 13 in the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), CAF has announced.

In its decision on the absence of the National Team of Morocco from Match #5 of Group C against Sudan, the Organizing Committee announced that Sudan, Ghana & Madagascar will earn 3 points each in their matches against Morocco by 3-0 goal margins.

Below is the decision of the Organizing Committee:

The Organizing Committee of the African Nations Championship in its meeting held in Algiers on the 16th of January 2023 noted with regret the absence of the National Team of Morocco from Match #5 of Group C between Morocco & Sudan in the frame of the group matches of the final tournament of CHAN2022.

The Committee reviewed the referee’s and commissioner’s reports and applied the following articles of the competition’s regulations, namely Articles 83 & 84.

The Committee decided that: • The Moroccan National team will lose all its matches by 3-0.

• Sudan, Ghana & Madagascar will earn 3 points each in their matches against Morocco.

• At the end of the phase of the group matches, the 1st and 2nd classified teams from Group C will qualify for the next round of the competition.

• Match #22: Sudan vs. Madagascar initially scheduled to be played in Oran has been moved to Constantine without any change in the date and kick-off time.

• To submit the case to CAF Disciplinary Committee for further examination.

The 2022/23 Ghana Premier League contained with match-day 13 fixtures over the weekend across the venues.

Aduana Stars suffered their first defeat of the year on Sunday, falling 1-0 to Karela United in Aiyinase.

Aduana were aiming for three points to extend their lead at the top, but fell short, with Karela producing a great performance to stop the league leaders at CAM Park.

Karela entered the game having gone seven games without a victory and were not considered favourites.

Nevertheless, they succeeded because of Evans Adomako’s goal in the 78th minute.

Paa Kwesi Fabin’s team fought valiantly for an equaliser, but the home team held firm and earned their first victory since November 6, 2022.

Aduana remain first, but have seen their lead cut to three points by Hearts of Oak, who were frustrated at home by Samartex.

Hearts of Oak and Samartex played to a scoreless tie. The second goalless draw in a row for the Phobians. They are still second in the table, but that could change on Monday when Kotoko, who are a point behind them, play Bibiani Gold Stars.

Great Olympics moved up to seventh after defeating Kotoku Royals 2-0 away. The victory is Great Olympics’ first in six games.
Dreams FC’s winning streak at home continued with a 3-1 victory over Real Tamale United, while King Faisal beat Tamale City by a lone goal and Nsoatreman drew 0-0 with Legon Cities.

Asante Kotoko on Monday played a 1-1 draw with GoldStars in Bibiani while Accra Lions defeated Berekum Chelsea 2-1.

Black Galaxies head coach Annor Walker has debunked the notion players on his team weren’t kitted with the right boots in the loss to Madagascar.

Ghana lost 1-2 to the island nation in Group C of the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) taking place in Constantine, Algeria.

Madagascar took a 2-0 lead in a first half that had Ghanaian players slip several times on the surface that got watered just before kickoff.

However, Malagasy players looked comfortable and were more stable playing on the surface in leading observers to question the quality of the Ghanaian players’ boots.

“My boys are wearing good boots; each and everyone has three boots at hand” he said and went to add the weather didn’t play a part in the loss stating, “the weather was better for me than when we came… so I see it (yesterday’s game) like normal weather.”

Ghana takes on Sudan in the next game on Thursday, at 20:00 GMT in a must win game for the Black Galaxies.

Premier League holders Asante Kotoko recorded a fourth consecutive draw after their game against Bibiani GoldStars at the Dun’s Park ended 1-1.

Asante Kotoko struck first in the dying embers of the first half, Steven Mukwala capitalized on an error by the Gold Stars defense to go round the goalkeeper and put the ball into the net.

Just five minutes into the second half, Bibiani GoldStars were awarded a bizarre penalty. Ibrabim Laar stepped up and took the kick but his effort was saved, before Yahaya Adramani pounced on the rebound to make it 1-1.

In the 70th minute, Bibiani GoldStars were awarded another spot-kick, Prince Owusu Kwabena took responsibility but his effort was kept out by Frederick Asare.

Both sides in the remaining minutes of the game pushed bodies forward for the winning goal but to no avail as it ended 1-1.

At the Accra Sports Stadium, Accra Lions returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory against Berekum Chelsea.

Seidu Bassit opened the scoring for Accra Lions in the 21st minute, before Mezack Afriyie scored to make it 1-1 in the 44th minute. In the 74th minute, Abass Samari Salifu scored the winner for Lions.

In other results, Accra Hearts of Oak were held to a scoreless draw by Samartex 1996 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Evans Adomako scored the only goal of the game to earn Karela United a 1-0 home win against League leaders Aduana, ending a run of 7 league games without a win.

At the Nana Kronmansah Park, Nsoatreman were held to a scoreless draw by a resilient Legon Cities side.

Dreams FC defeated Real Tamale United 3-1 to return to winning ways. Agyenim Boateng Mensah scored a brace and Ali Huzaif scored the other goal for dreams. Issah Kuka scored the consolation goal for RTU.

Samuel Ashie Quaye and Aryeetey Ayikwei scored in either half to earn Great Olympics a 2-0 win against Kotoku Royals at the Cape Coast Stadium.

In Kumasi, Samuel Adom Antwi goal in the dying minutes of the first half earned King Faisal a 1-0 win against Tamale City.

On Saturday, a late penalty converted by Kofi Agbesimah earned Bechem United a 1-0 win against Medeama at the Nana Gyeabor Park.

Match report: Gold Stars hold Asante Kotoko at home

Asante Kotoko remain third after they were held by Bibiani Gold Stars on Monday afternoon.

Kotoko took the lead through Steven Mukwala on the stroke of halftime but Gold Stars staged a fightback in the second half.

Mukwala was played through and he kept his composure by beating goalkeeper and slotting the ball into the net.

Mukwala’s goal put Kotoko in a position to secure a first win in four games. They were however pegged back, with Gold Stars profiting from contentious decision.

Gold Stars were awarded a penalty for a handball and they converted to draw level.

Gold Stars were awarded another penalty, but this time Frederick Asare saved.

The draw means Kotoko are three points behind league leaders Aduana Stars, while Gold Stars are four points adrift the top.

Seydou Zerbo names Asante Kotoko’s starting line-up for GoldStars clash

Coach Seydou Zerbo has made changes to his team as the Porcupine Warriors take on Bibiani Gold Stars this afternoon at Dun’s Park.

Georges Mfegue is back in the team’s set-up, joining Steven Mukwala and Stephen Amankona in attack as the club seeks their first win in 2023.

Kotoko has not lost in their last two meetings against Bibiani Gold Stars, having claimed back-to-back victories.

They have, though, are on a run of three consecutive draws, having held leaders Aduana Stars, Olympics and King Faisal but the Porcupine Warriors head into this game as favourites.

They have taken just six points from their last five games, with their only victory coming against Berekum Chelsea in Kumasi.

Coach Zeebo is expecting a proper fight today and capitalize on Aduana Stars’ slip-up to close the gap on the league table.

CHAN 2022: Annor Walker reveals why Black Galaxies lost to Madagascar

Head coach of the Black Galaxies Annor Walker says minor mistakes cost his outfit defeat against Madagascar in the 2023 Championship for African Nations (CHAN) tournament.

The home-based national team were stunned by debutants on Sunday night in Algeria.

Annor Walker’s team started the game as favourite but suffered a 2-1 defeat against the South Western country.

Madagascar opened the scoring after just 12 minutes into the encounter through Solomampionona Koloina.

They doubled their lead in the 61st minute mark through Tokinantenaina Olivier.

Substitute, Augustine Agyapong made his presence felt as he pulled one back for Ghana but could not inspire the Black Galaxies to come from behind to earn anything out of the clash.

“I think my boys disappointed me in the first half and I take it as one of those things that happen in football.

We were well prepared for this game but minor mistakes cost us the game,” the coach said.

At the moment, the Black Galaxies chances of qualifying to the knockout phase look slims due to the defeat in their first game. Ghana is without a point following the defeat to Madagascar.

Annor Walker’s side must beat Sudan at all cost and wait for the outcome of other group game between Madagascar and Sudan.

Ghana’s group opponent Morocco is out of the tournament due to political tension between them and Algeria.

At the moment, Group C consist of only three teams: Ghana, Madagascar, and Sudan, with two teams expected to advance to the next round.

Ghana must now prepare for the second Group C match against Sudan on January 19.

Asante Kotoko trainer, Seydou Zerbo has named his side’s travelling squad for the Ghana Premier League game against Gold Star’s.

The game is scheduled to come off Monday at the Dun’s Park at 3pm.

Sarfo Taylor, Justice Blay, Georges Mfegue and Isaac Oppong have all returned to the matchday squad while Eric Zeze did not make the trip.
