CHAN 2022: MVP winner David Abagna applauds Black Galaxies technical team after win over Sudan

David Sandan Abagna was voted the Player of the Match in Ghana’s 3-1 win over Sudan in the 2022 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The Black Galaxies midfielder key in Ghana’s midfield in Thursday’s game and dictated the Black Galaxies’ play throughout the game.

Abagna proved to be handful for the Sudanese side as he was instrumental in Ghana’s come-back after the team conceded in the 31st minute.

“When we conceded the goal, I told myself that we can’t go down and I also spoke to my teammates. We had to psych each other up. We had to push because it was a make-or-break situation”

Abagna told the media after the game Abagna also credited his coach and technical support stuff for the planning and approach to the win over the east Africans. 

“We came with a plan and needed to stay focused. It was very difficult, but we had to stay focused. Having this man of the match award makes me very happy. There is so much excitement for me right now. It was a good team effort win” said an elated Abagna.

The 2nd deputy Black Galaxies skipper received a special plaque for his award from CAF at the end of the match as the MVP.

Hearts of Oak clash with Dreams FC, Benab FC host Kotoko as clubs chase MTN FA Cup glory this weekend

Defending Champions Accra Hearts of Oak, giants Asante Kotoko SC, three-time Champions Accra Great Olympics and League leaders Aduana FC will go into action this weekend in search of a ticket to the Round of 16 of the 2022/23 MTN FA Cup.

Hearts of Oak will host Dreams FC at the Accra Sports stadium on Sunday, January 22, while giants Asante Kotoko, who have nine FA Cup titles to their credit lock horns with lower tier side Benab FC at the Baba Yara Sports stadium in Kumasi. The League Champions have yet to win a game in 2023 following four straight draws against Aduana FC, Accra Great Olympics, Tamale City and Bibiani Gold Stars since the beginning of the new year. The Porcupine Warriors are expected to field a strong team against the Division Two side as Coach Seydou Zerbo works around the clock to turn things around in their quest for the double.

In Accra – record Champions Accra Hearts of Oak head into a difficult test against Dreams FC at the Accra Sports stadium. Despite a 3-2 win over the Still Believe lads in the semifinal of  last season’s Cup competition, Hearts of Oak came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Dreams FC in the first round of the 2022/23 betPawa Premier League. The tie pits two of the best teams in the season against each other – this time at the Round of 32 of the MTN FA Cup. The Phobians have tasted one defeat, drawn two and won in their last four outings in the League going into the match against a Dreams FC side that have climbed up the League table following three wins and two draws in their last five outings.

Accra Great Olympics have won the FA Cup three times, (1975, 1983 and 1995) and will step onto the pitch looking for their first Cup triumph in 27-years. However, the Dade Boys have an uphill task against Premier League campaigners Legon Cities on Saturday.

Meanwhile League leaders Aduana FC will do battle against Tano Bofoakwa at the Sunyani Coronation Park in another cliffhanger for the Round of 32.

‘Welcome to the biggest club in Ghana’ – Kotoko captain Richard Boadu, Justice Blay to Rashid Nortey

Asante Kotoko captain Richard Boadu has welcomed his new teammate Rashid Nortey to the club after sealing a move to the Reds.

Nortey penned a two-and-a-half year deal with the Porcupines after ending his six-year stint with Medeama.

The 27-year-old joins the Reds with enormous quality and experience and will only improve the team’s quest to defend their league title.

At the Tarkwa-based side, Nortey made over 100 appearances for the club during his spell going on to wear the team’s armband in the process.

However, Richard Boadu who was his midfield partner at Medeama and now the captain of Kotoko has sent a big welcome message to Nortey as he joins ‘the biggest club in Ghana’.

Justice Blay who was also a teammate of Nortey at Medeama and now plays for Asante Kotoko took to Twitter to welcome Nortey to the ‘biggest football family.

Midfielder Rashid Nortey has signed for Asante Kotoko as a free player. 

Rashid has penned two and a half-deal after running down his contract with Medeama SC. 

Rashid comes with enormous quality and experience and is expected to improve Kotoko’s midfield to achieve their targets this season. 
 

Nortey will play alongside two of his former teammates at Medeama – Justice Blay and captain Richard Boadu

Kotoko have not been impressive in their last Ghana Premier League, having drawn all games.

They will play against Kotoku Royals on Sunday night at the Baba Yara Stadium in the next round of matches.

‘It was a human error’ – Referee Franklin Akumatey apologises to Kotoko fans after wrong penalty call in Goldstars draw

Franklin Akumatey, the referee who officiated the Bibiani Gold Stars vs Asante Kotoko in the BetPawa Ghana Premier League matchday 13 has apologized to the management and fans of Asante Kotoko.

The Referee speaking on Kessben FM’s Midfield Action rendered an apology to the Kotoko fraternity admitting that he got his penalty call against Kotoko wrong.

Akumatey noted that he did not get enough help to decide about the penalty decision from his assistant referees on the day.

“It was a human error, I did not see it well at that flash moment. The ball rather hit the hand of the Bibiani player, not the Kotoko player.

“It was after the game that I saw that. I got it wrong. It was a human error but not deliberate. I consulted my assistants and I did not get enough help so they told me to decide for myself. I wish had a VAR that afternoon” He said.

Transfer News: King Faisal SACK Abednego Tetteh after five months

Kumasi-based King Faisal have reportedly terminated the contract of striker Abednego Tetteh.

The 31-year-old sealed a two-year move to the Kumasi-based club on the transfer deadline day in August 2022 after he was released by Hearts of Oak.

Sources reveal that the striker failed to show up for training after their drawn game against Hearts of Oak few days ago.

It was further reveal that the management of the club aren’t impressed with his attitude at the club and has therefore decided to abrogate his contract after just 5 months at the club.

He has so far played 11 games for the Insha Allah lads and scored two goals in all competitions.

However, King Faisal has stormed Asante Kotoko asking for a loan move for Samuel Boateng till the end of the season.

Chief Executive Officer of Bibiani Goldstars John Kwasi Adu says Kotoko is too big to complain about officiating after sharing the spoils with his outfit.

The Porcupine Warriors were away to Gold Stars at Dun’s Park on Monday, January 16 2023, where the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

It was Kotoko’s fourth consecutive stalemate, having shared the spoils against Aduana Stars, Great Olympics, and Tamale City.

The reigning champions took the lead through Stephen Mukwala in stoppage time of the first half. Gold Stars equalized through a Yahaya Adraman spot kick at the start of the second half.

The Golden Boys blew the chance to claim all three points after Prince Owusu missed a penalty awarded his team in the 70th minute.

The Porcupine Warriors has raised concerns about officiating following their stalemate against Goldstars.

“Asante Kotoko is too big to complain about referee, if you are team, sometimes you don’t shift your problems to a third party who is innocent”

“Look at the infringement, the match was on camera so they should go back and watch the video. All two incident of penalties was right. How can a big club like Kotoko attribute your draw to officiating? He quizzed.

The champions have been far from clinical in front of goal having won just one of their last 7 games with 5 draws and a loss.

Former Asante Kotoko defender Richard Osei Agyemang says he has nothing to prove domestically and it is as a result why he has moved to India.

Osei Agyemang ended his ten-year stay in the Ghana Premier League after completing a move to the Indian outfit Real Kashmir FC this window.

The former Ashantigold captain penned one-year deal with his new outfit and is expected to play a huge role for the club.

According to him, his move to India is motivated by money having rejected offers from Ghanaian clubs.

“I decided not play the Ghana league again after several years. Some teams especially those who earned promotion to the GPL approached me for my services but I rejected their offers because I wanted to leave”

“I started playing in the GPL back in 2012 to 2022, I have paid my dues and made name for myself, so I thought it wise to go for money this time around because am growing” he said.

Medeama sign goalkeeper Felix Kyei on free transfer

Medeama SC have secured the services of free-agent goalkeeper Felix Kyei, the club announced Tuesday.

The 19-year-old signed a three-year contract with the Mauve and Yellow after passing his mandatory medical.

Kyei’s last club was Nzema rivals Karela United, where he ran the clock down to the end of his contract just over a week ago.

“This is a dream club for me and I’m happy to be here. I am here to compete and look forward to working with the goalkeeping group.

“We’ll support each other and work for the collective good of the club,” Kyei is quoted as saying by his new club.

“You can’t speak about big clubs in Ghana without mentioning Medeama. I believe this is the platform for me to continue my development.

“We have huge potential and we can achieve a lot if we work together as a loyal and loving unit,” the teenage shot-stopper added.

Last season, Kyei played well in goal for Karela United, making 30 league appearances. Having seized the number 1 spot, he continued to start in 10 of the opening 11 games of the ongoing 2022/23 campaign until his contract expired. His last game came in the 0-0 draw with RTU at CAM Park on January 8

No Partey as Mohammed Kudus makes IFFHS’ 2022 CAF team of the year – Check the full list

Globally recognized statistical firm International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) has announced its CAF team of the year 2022.

The statistical firm opted for 4-3-3 formation but surprisingly there was no room for Thomas Partey, Victor Osimhen and Édouard Mendy who were both fantastic in the year under review.

In post for the team of the year is Yassine Bounou who was nearly unplayable for Morocco in their run to the semifinal of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The back four is occupied by Senegal’s Kalidou Koulibaly, Ali Maaloul of Tunisia and Morocco duo, Achraf Hakimi and Romain Saiss.

In midfield, Mohammed Kudus who was a scorer of two goals for Ghana at the World Cup in Qatar was picked alongside Morocco’s Sofyan Amrabat and Azzedine Ounahi.

Current African best player Sadio Mane, Mohammed Salah and Vincent Aboubakar were selected upfront.
