Chelsea players to wear black armbands this afternoon against Southampton in tribute to Christian Atsu

In memory of former Blues winger Christian Atsu, who has been confirmed as one of the numerous victims of the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria, the Chelsea players will be donning black armbands for today’s match against Southampton.

The former Ghana International passed on Saturday, February 18, 2023 after his body was recovered from the rubble of a collapsed building following the earthquake that struck Southern and Central Turkey on Monday, February 6, 2023.

Christian Atsu’s former captain at Chelsea, John Terry, took it to Twitter to pay tribute to the late Ghana footballer, posting an image of Christian Atsu writing: “RIP my friend.”

While Chelsea called his death “enormous sadness”, Newcastle called him: “A talented player and a special person, he will always be fondly remembered by our players, staff and supporters.”

Bournemouth also joined the other two Premier League clubs in paying tribute to the player who spent the first half of the 2015-16 season on loan at. All three clubs will wear commemorative black armbands in their fixtures this week, while Chelsea will hold a minute’s applause before their meeting with Southampton. Newcastle and Liverpool will also hold a minute’s silence before their Saturday clash at Saint James Park.

Atsu joined Chelsea in 2013 but never made an appearance for the Blues. He played for Newcastle United between 2016 and 2021 before joining the Turkish club Hatayspor in 2022.

Asante Kotoko trainer, Seydou Zerbo has named his starting lineup for their Ghana Premier League encounter with Nsoatreman FC on Saturday.

Kotoko will be hoping to pick a winning following a 0-2 loss to Dreams FC last weekend.

New signing Mohammed Alhassan has been handed a starting berth. Frederick Asare has also returned to the posts after sitting out in the Dreams clash.

Hearts of Oak legend Dan Quaye endorses Mohammed Alhassan’s potential success at Asante Kotoko

Former Hearts of Oak defender and legend, Dan Quaye, has given his full backing to Mohammed Alhassan’s future success at Asante Kotoko.

Alhassan recently joined the Porcupine Warriors on a free transfer after being released by Hearts of Oak last month. During his four seasons with Hearts of Oak, he won a Ghana Premier League title and two MTN FA Cup trophies, and it is expected that his experience in the game will be a significant asset to Asante Kotoko in their defense of the league title.

Quaye criticized the management of Hearts of Oak for letting go of Alhassan, stating that he was a good player with experience that young players could learn from. He also expressed his disappointment in how the club has treated other key players, including Manaf at RTU.

Despite his criticism of Hearts of Oak, Quaye praised Alhassan’s decision to join Asante Kotoko and expressed confidence that the defender would be an essential addition to the club’s title contention efforts.

Ghanaian clubs to observe one minute of silence for Christian Atsu

All clubs have been granted permission by the Ghana Football Association to hold a minute’s silence in honor of Christian Atsu.

The upcoming Accra Lions versus Kotoku Royals match and the Nsoatreman versus Asante Kotoko encounter will observe a minute of silence.

After being trapped under rubble for over 11 days following an earthquake that claimed the lives of over 45,000 people, Atsu unfortunately passed away.

Just hours prior to the natural disaster, the Ghanaian had scored his first goal for Hatayaspor.

The Ghana FA’s official statement reads as follows:

“Notice is being served for a one minute silence at all GFA organized competitions in honour of Christian Atsu.

The former Ghana International passed on Saturday, February 18, 2023 after his body was recovered from the rubble of a collapsed building following the earthquake that struck Southern and Central Turkey on Monday, February 6, 2023.

The competitions include the betPawa Premier League, the Access Bank Division League, the Women’s FA Cup and all Regional Football Association League matches.

Stakeholders, especially, Match Commissioners and Referees are to take note and act accordingly”

CAF saddened by the tragic loss of Christian Atsu

CAF is saddened by the tragic passing of Ghana international, Christian Atsu following the earthquake in Turkey.

Atsu, who represented his country 65 times, played for a number of clubs including Everton, Chelsea, Newcastle in England and Porto. At the time of his tragic death, he was plying his trade in Turkey for Hatayspor.

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe and African Football Family conveys heartfelt condolences to his family and Ghanaian Football Family.

Christian Atsu was found deceased under the rubble following the devastating earthquake that occurred two weeks ago, according to a tweet by Turkey-based football agent Murat Uzunmehmet on Saturday morning.

The forward had been trapped for 11 days before being found to have passed away.

It is believed that Murat Uzunmehmet had a close relationship with Christian Atsu, and some credit him for his involvement in the forward’s transfer to Hatayaspor.

Several sources in Turkey appear to support the announcement made by Uzunmehmet about Atsu’s passing.

Following the earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria, reports emerged on Monday, February 6 that Christian Atsu was among those trapped under rubble. This led to calls for prayers for his safe recovery, with both current president Nana Akufo-Addo and former president John Mahama involved.

The next day, Atsu’s club confirmed that he had been rescued with only an injured foot. However, Hatayaspor later clarified that it was a case of mistaken identity and Atsu had not been found.

The circulation of videos showing people being rescued strengthened the hope and faith of people that Atsu would also be found alive.

Atsu’s wife Marie-Claire Rupio, who lives in Newcastle with their two children, made a public appeal for more support from authorities to find her husband. Rupio confirmed that Nana Sechere, Atsu’s agent, had arrived in Turkey to assist in the search.

In a series of tweets earlier this week, Sechere gave a heartbreaking update, revealing that Atsu’s shoes had been found but the player was still missing.

This was the last update before the announcement on Saturday of Atsu’s passing.

Ghanaians have taken to social media to pay tribute to Atsu, who played 65 matches between 2012 and 2019, including an outstanding performance at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, where he was named player of the tournament.

Atsu played for various European clubs, such as Chelsea, FC Porto, Newcastle United, Everton, and Bournemouth.

Atsu joined Hatayaspor in September of last year, and just hours before the natural disaster that has claimed over 45,000 lives, he scored his first goal for the club on Sunday, February 5.

2022/23 GPL: Preview – Nsoatreman FC host champions Asante Kotoko

Premier League new boys Nsoatreman FC will host champions Asante Kotoko at Nana Konamansah Park on Saturday.

Their first leg encounter ended 2-1 in favor of Asante Kotoko with Stephen Amankona and Isaac Oppong scoring for the Porcupines while Philip Ofori netted for the visitors. Nsoatreman FC sits in 12th place in the log with 23 points and have won two, lost two and drawn one in their last five games.

Champions Asante Kotoko are third in the League table with 27 points having won two, lost two and drawn one in their last five matches.

The Porcupines have boosted their team with Matheus Medieros De Souza, Rashid Nortey and Mohammed Alhassan while Enock Morison, Steven Mukwala Desse, George Mfegue and Danlad Ibrahim are all available for selection.

Nsoatreman FC signed former AshantiGold forward Mark Agyekum to shore up their attack and he is expected to compliment the likes of Ushau Abu, Steven Diyou, Emmanuel Kotei, Walid Fuseini and Baba Mahama.

The League have yet to win a game in the Brong Ahafo Region thus far having drawn against Aduana FC and lost to Bechem United in the first round of the season. They head into the match fresh from a 2-0 loss to Dreams FC at the theatre of Dreams on Sunday.

The defeated further deepen the cracks in the team denting their title aspirations as they fell five points behind leaders Aduana FC. Nsoatreman FC are very strong at home despite losing 1-0 to Accra Hearts of Oak in the first round of the campaign.

Match report: Medeama open second round of GPL with victory over Legon Cities

Medeama recorded back-to-back wins over Legon Cities after a comfortable 2-0 win over the side at home on Friday.

Defender Nurudeen Abdulai scored his second goal of the season with a sublime finish in the 40th minute.

The powerful centre-back tip-toed on a cross from captain Kwasi Donsu to deliver a cracking shot to beat goalkeeper Sylvester Sackey to put the home side infront.

The Mauve and Yellows made their dominance count after striker Joshua Agyemang put the icing on the cake with a sleek finish on 70th minute to hand the side the maximum points at the Akoon Community Park.

Medeama enjoyed the chunk of possession with goalkeeper Felix Kyei on a virtual holiday as the two-time FA Cup winners bagged maximum points to move up the ladder.

This is the side’s fourth win at home in five games at home – with our only defeat to Hearts of Oak.

Medeama have now catapulted to 6th on the table after 18 matches.

They travel up north to battle Tamale City on Wednesday.

For Legon Cities, it has been back-to-back defeats in the Western region – losing to Samartex and now Medeama.

2022/23 Caf CL: Merreikh, Zamalek play to barren draw in Benghazi

Both sides started their campaign last weekend with identical 1-0 losses, but they managed to get one each on board after match day two.

On a hot afternoon in Benghazi, it was a closely contested tie, with Merreikh looking to make the most of their ‘home advantage”.

Zamalek defended well in the face of a spirited attack from Merreikh.

Goalkeeper Mohamed Awad had to be hawk-eyed and he made a neat save to deny Masinho in the 27th minute with a close opportunity, ensuring the spoils remained shared at the break.

In the second half, Merreikh kept their attacking front and Awad made another good save to deny Alex Da Silva 10 minutes after the restart.

Late on in the game, with 12 minutes left on the clock, Awad made another brilliant save, putting a strong right palm to punch away an overhead kick from Ajab Ramadan.

None of the two sides could land a goal as they shared a barren stalemate, a result that leaves them occupying the bottom two slots in the group.
