Kotoko Communications Director David Obeng defends under fire head coach Seydou Zerbo

David Obeng Nyarko, the Communications Director of Asante Kotoko, has come to the defense of their head coach, Seydou Zerbo, who has been under fire lately.

Nyarko believes that the club’s performance in the league has been hindered by bad officiating. He went on to cite several games where they could have earned more points and been in a better position in the league.

This season, the defending champions of the Ghana Premier League have been at the center of numerous controversial refereeing decisions. Some officials have even received bans due to their involvement in the club’s games.

“We have several issues with officiating. As we talk, some referees have been banned because of some decisions they have taken against Asante Kotaku,” he told Oyerepa FM.

“If you look at the points difference between us and the top team, it is seven points against our team. We conceded a clear offside goal at RTU. At half time, a lot of things went behind the scenes.

“These are some of the things the coach has suffered in the Ghana Premier league.

“Against Dreams FC, a player was fouled inside the box and the referee decided not to award a penalty. Nobody has the confidence to even go into the box again. A wrong penalty was given against us at Karela.”

Bechem Utd coach Kassim Mingle aware of Kotoko threat ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash

According to Kassim Mingle, the coach of Bechem United, Asante Kotoko will approach their Ghana Premier League round 19 match with the mentality of “wounded tigers”.

The game, scheduled for Wednesday, will determine which team will secure the second position in the league.

Asante Kotoko faced a difficult week after being eliminated from the MTN FA Cup by Aduana and will be eager to bounce back in the upcoming match. Nevertheless, Mingle is confident that his team will not be a walkover for the visitors.

Speaking to Oyerepa FM, Mingle said, “We are approaching it like any other league game. I do not want to put any pressure on my boys by doing any extraordinary preparation.”

He added, “It will be a very tough match. Kotoko will come like wounded tigers because they have lost two games on a row but they are meeting a team called Bechem United.

“It is going to be very tough for them. You can’t just walk over Bechem United like that. They will not get it on a silver platter, the better side with luck will win.”

Bechem United are currently in second place in the Ghana Premier League, while Asante Kotoko are in third.

Takyi Arhin, the General Manager of Aduana Stars, holds the belief that Asante Kotoko cannot retain their Ghana Premier League title under the leadership of Seydou Zerbo as head coach due to their inconsistent performance in the ongoing season.

The Porcupine Warriors suffered a 1-0 defeat against Aduana in the Round of 16 games of the MTN FA Cup on Sunday, leading the veteran football administrator to suggest that Kotoko should focus on the upcoming season.

Arhin opines that the team is feeble and lacks a competent coach to defend their title.

“Asante Kotoko need to prepare for next season because this current team is not good to win the Premier League,” he told Kumasi-based Otec FM.

“They don’t have a good coach looking at their performances of late.

“Seydou Zerbo needs to learn more and stop the unnecessary talks about officiating,” he added.

Asante Kotoko will hope ti return to winning ways when they host Bechem United in the matchday 19 games at the Baba Yara Stadium in the ongoing 2022/23 Ghana Premier League season.

Hearts, Kotoko first to pay for Ghana Premier League Limited shares

Premier League giants Accra Hearts of Oak SC and Asante Kotoko SC have paid their Stakeholder subscription fees for the establishment of the Ghana Premier League Limited Company.

As part of the requirements for the registration of the Autonomous Premier League as Company, all Premier League Clubs agreed to pay an amount of GHc100,000 as subscription fees for the shares.

The two most-decorated Premier League sides have shown their commitment towards the registration process by depositing their share subscription fees.

Other Clubs are expected to submit their subscriptions before the deadline on agreed between all the Premier League clubs and the Autonomous League Implementation Committee.

The Autonomous League Implementation Committee met Representatives of all 18 Premier League Clubs at the World Trade Centre in Accra on Tuesday, February 23, 2023, to update them on the progress made so far.

Aside the registration process, clubs were updated on the opening of the Company’s Bank Account, Representation of Clubs on the Autonomous League Board, and steps towards commencement of the League.

The meeting also discussed plans for stakeholder engagements with the Sports Ministry, Institutions, Sponsors, partners, media right holders, supporters, the media, referees, match Commissioners and Coordinators, stadium or facility owners,  and the general public.

The media engagement will also include an education drive to update supporters and the public on the nature, form and rules of the new organisation of the Premier League under the new company.

GFA get attachment program for five Women’s football Coaches in Netherlands

Five Women’s football Coaches, namely, Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo, Charles Anokye Frimpong, Joyce Boatey-Agyei, Anita Wiredu and Edna Quagraine have arrived in the Netherlands for the second phase of the Coach education program put together by the Technical Directorate of the Ghana Football Association.

The quintet have been receiving training via online platforms since Monday, January 2, 2023 as the first step to acquire knowledge and experience at different levels of Women’s football and the entire football eco-system.

The five Coaches will be attached with Clubs such as Ajax Amsterdam, Feyenoord Rotterdam, PSV Eindhoven and PEC Zwolle.

Whiles in the Netherlands, they will be taken through topics such as Match analysis, Physical Development of players, Scouting, Tactical training, Team preparation and training, Training of Amateur players, Developing playing style among others.

In a similar vein, the GFA sent Yussif Basigi and Baba Nuhu to Germany for a one-month attachment with Bundesliga side TSG Hoffeinheim having announced in July last year that the Technical Directorate has brokered a deal with some top European Clubs for attachment opportunities for Ghanaian Coaches.

The capacity building program is part of efforts by the Technical Directorate of the Ghana Football Association to improve the technical capacity of our Coaches to come to terms with the modern trends in football.

The Ghana Football Association is fully funding this attachment opportunity for the five coaches. This training is spearheaded by UEFA Coaching instructor Hesterine de Reus and experts from some top football clubs in the Netherlands.

Hearts of Oak vs. Asante Kotoko League match to be played in honour of President

The Ghana Football Association has granted approval for the betPawa Premier League MatchDay 20 fixture between Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko to be played in honour of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as part of the 66th Independence Day anniversary.

This follows a fruitful discussion between the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Accra Hearts of Oak SC, Asante Kotoko SC and the National Sports Authority on Friday, February 24, 2023.

The annual President’s Cup which is played in honour of the sitting President is played on the eve of Ghana’s Independence Day celebration. This year’s edition will take place at the Accra Sports stadium on Sunday, March 5, 2023 at 4pm.

Stakeholders are to note that the winner of the match will be awarded the three points in the betPawa Premier League by the GFA and also presented with medals and a Trophy by the Ghana League Clubs Association.

The game will proceed to penalty shootouts to determine the winner if it ends in a draw.

The leadership of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) has met with Youth and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif (Hon.) to brief him about the concept and other arrangements for the day.

Black Meteors to resume camping with 24 players ahead of U-23 Afcon qualifiers

Coach of the Black Meteors Ibrahim Tanko has invited Twenty-four players for camping at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence at Prampram to begin preparation for the last round of the 2023 TotalEnergies U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Ghana will play the winner of the match between Ethiopia and Algeria following the disqualification of DR Congo by the CAF Disciplinary Board. The Congolese lost the slot after fielding an unqualified player in matches against Ethiopia and Algeria in the 1st and 2nd round stages of the qualifiers.

The invited players are to report to the Ghanaman soccer Centre of Excellence at 2pm on Monday, February 27, 2023.

The next edition of the TotalEnergies U-23 Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Morocco.

Same as previous editions, the tournament served as African qualifying for the Olympic football tournament with the top three teams of the tournament qualifying for the 2024 Summer Olympic men’s football tournament in Paris the fourth place team will play the AFC-CAF playoffs to decide the final slot to the Olympics.

Egypt are the defending champions.

FA Cup: Aduana Stars defeat Kotoko to progress to quarterfinals

Aduana Stars secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the MTN FA Cup on Sunday after defeating Asante Kotoko 1-0.

The match, which took place at the Agyemang Badu Park, was a tightly contested affair, with both sides looking to gain the upper hand.

In the first half, neither team managed to break the deadlock despite some good chances. Aduana Stars were the more dominant side, but they failed to capitalise on their opportunities. Asante Kotoko, on the other hand, were content to sit back and play on the counter-attack.

The second half saw Aduana Stars continue to push forward, and they were finally rewarded in the 56th minute when Sam Adams converted a penalty to give them the lead.

Asante Kotoko tried to mount a comeback, but Aduana Stars held firm to secure the victory and progress to the next round of the competition.

Overall, it was a hard-fought victory for Aduana Stars, who will be looking to continue their impressive form in both competitions. They will now face another tough test in the quarterfinals, but they will be confident of their chances after this impressive performance.
