GPL Preview: Leaders Medeama SC lock horns with King Faisal Friday

Premier League leaders, Medeama SC will face King Faisal on Friday, May 26, in their Matchday 32 fixture at Akoon Park in Tarkwa.

The mauves and yellows who climbed to the top of the table after a 5-1 win over Accra Hearts of Oak on Sunday; will be hoping to maintain their top spot having made steady progress in the course of the campaign.

The Tarkwa lads have been through different spells this season – started with David Duncan, changed to Umar Rabi and now Evans Augustine Adotey following a top-turvy form that left them in 7th place two months ago. Adotey has led the side to an unprecedented run in the League since March 1, 2023 when they drew 1-1 with Real Tamale United at the Aliu Mahama stadium.

Medeama SC have lost three, drawn one and won eight of their last 12 League matches since the coming of Evans Adotey – a run that has lifted them from 7th to the top spot in the League table.

Vincent Atinga has been one of their high flying performers in the season as the defender has scored 11 times in this campaign with Jonathan Sowah, Captain Kwasi Donsu, Derrick Fordjuor and former Karela United goalkeeper Felix Kyei complimenting him.

King Faisal lost 2-0 to FC Samartex in their week 31 game at Dr. Kwame Kyei sports complex and have dropped to 17th in the table with three matches to end the season. Ignatius Osei-Fosu’s side need at least two wins from the three remaining matches to stand any chance to avoiding the drop as they sit in 17th place with 36 points – three points below the relegation zone.

Medeama SC have won three and lost two of their last five matches and sit at the top of the table with 53 points.

King Faisal are winless in their last five matches – lost 4 and drawn 1. Abdul Latif, Baba Yahaya, Suraj Ibrahim, Joseph Edu Dwomoh and Elia Elia are available for selection for King Faisal while Vincent Atinga Addae, Nurudeen Abdulai, Nana Kofi Babil, Jonathan Sowah, Darlington Gyan Fosu and Kwadwo Amoako aim to start for Medeama SC.

Medeama SC won the first round encounter 3-2 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on StarTimes Adepa channel 247 on Friday.

Salah ‘devastated’ at missing out on Champions League

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah said he is “devastated” the club have missed out on a spot in next season’s Champions League and added “there’s absolutely no excuse for this”.

Salah posted his comments on social media shortly after Liverpool’s failure to finish in the top four was confirmed by Manchester United beating Chelsea.

Liverpool will finish fifth and play in next season’s Europa League.

“We let you [fans] and ourselves down,” said Egypt international Salah, 30.

Liverpool won seven of their past eight games in a late push for fourth place but, ultimately, could not make up for their inconsistent form for much of the season before that run.

United only needed a point at home to Chelsea in the penultimate game of their season to confirm their Champions League place and join champions Manchester City, second-placed Arsenal and Newcastle United as England’s contingent in Europe’s top competition next season.

“We had everything we needed to make it to next year’s Champions League and we failed,” said Salah, who was part of the Liverpool team that won the tournament in 2018-19 and lost last year’s final to Real Madrid.

“We are Liverpool and qualifying to the competition is the bare minimum.

“I am sorry but it’s too soon for an uplifting or optimistic post.”

Liverpool started the campaign off promisingly by beating Manchester City in the Community Shield but then won only two of their opening eight Premier League games.

They struggled away from home in the top flight before their recent upturn in form, with three of their eight away defeats coming at relegation-battling Nottingham Forest, Wolves and Bournemouth, while they were only beaten by struggling Leeds United at home in the league.

Liverpool were comfortably beaten by Real Madrid in the last 16 of this season’s Champions League, while they went out at the fourth-round stage of both the FA Cup and League Cup to Brighton and Manchester City respectively.

Salah, who signed a lucrative new three-year contract with Liverpool last summer, has scored 19 league goals this season, with six coming in 14 games before the 2022 World Cup and 13 in 23 games following the tournament.

Asante Kotoko beat lower-tier side Sporting Time FC in friendly ahead of Karela Utd showdown

Asante Kotoko, the reigning champions of the Ghana Premier League, showcased their superiority with an impressive 4-1 victory over lower-tier team Sporting Time in a friendly match at Adako Jachie Park on Thursday.

The friendly fixture was organized to assist Coach Abdul Gazale’s team in their preparations for their upcoming league clash against Karela United FC in week 32 of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League. The highly anticipated match is scheduled to take place on Monday, May 29, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

From the opening whistle, Asante Kotoko displayed their attacking prowess and quickly took control of the game. Captain Richard Boadu, along with Enoch Morrison, Clinton Opoku, and Sarfo Taylor, all got on the scoresheet, highlighting the team’s dominance. The collective effort of the players secured a convincing victory for the Porcupine Warriors.

Although Sporting Time managed to score a consolation goal from a penalty in the dying stages of the match, it did not pose a significant challenge to Asante Kotoko’s overall dominant performance.

Following their strong 3-1 win over Kotoku Royals earlier in the week, Asante Kotoko has reclaimed the fourth position in the league standings, accumulating a total of 47 points from 31 games.

These consecutive victories will undoubtedly boost the team’s confidence as they prepare for the upcoming match against Karela United.

Laryea Kingston explains why Black Starlets concede despite scoring more goals

Laryea Kingston, the Assistant Head Coach of the Ghana U17 national team, has responded to criticism regarding the team’s vulnerable defense.

While acknowledging the concerns raised by Ghanaians, the deputy coach of the Black Starlets has assured that there is no need to worry.

Kingston explained that the team has been constructed in a manner that emphasizes attacking play, with the aim of outscoring their opponents.

“I fully accept the criticisms and concerns from the public. However, we need to understand our style of play. We are an attacking team. In our eight matches, we have scored 31 goals, with the lowest being three goals,” Kingston stated.

“People used to say that Ghana’s U17 team was a one-goal project, but now we are scoring goals. Naturally, our opponents will also have opportunities to score. Nevertheless, our focus is on securing victories and staying ahead of our opponents,” he added.

The Ghana U17 team impressed at the UEFA Development Tournament last month, defeating Spain, Serbia, and Switzerland in the process.

Promising Ghanaian youngster, Mathew Anim Cudjoe suffered the disappointment of relegation from the Scottish Premier League as his club Dundee United were defeated by Kilmarnock FC on Wednesday night.

Dundee United’s tenure in the top-tier Scottish league came to an end with a disheartening 3-0 loss to Kilmarnock in the relegation playoffs at Tannadice Park.

In the 14th minute, Kyle Vassell, a forward hailing from Northern Ireland, capitalized on poor defending to score the opening goal of the match.

Shortly before halftime, Vassell extended the lead for the visiting team by securing a second goal.

Kilmarnock sealed their victory and ensured their safety when Innes Cameron found the back of the net for the third goal of the encounter in the 83rd minute, during the penultimate fixture of the season.

Dundee United currently find themselves at the bottom of the league standings with 31 points from 37 games, with only one match remaining in the 2022-23 campaign.

They are three points away from safety and have a goal difference that is eight goals worse off. Their final fixture will be an away visit to Motherwell FC on Sunday.

Throughout the season, Anim Cudjoe has made 11 appearances for Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership. Additionally, he played one match in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers.

The 19-year-old also featured in the Scottish FA Cup and League Cup, participating in a total of four matches across both competitions.

Patrice Milazar to referee Madagascar vs. Ghana AFCON qualifier

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Patrice Milazar from Mauritius as referee for the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Madagascar and Ghana.

The 37-year old FIFA referee will be assisted by compatriots Ram Babajee (Assistant I), Jean Marc Jeff Pithia (Assistant II) and Ahmad Imtehaz Heeralall (Fourth Official). Sinon Philip Georges from Seychelles is the Match Commissioner. Rwanda’s Hudu Munyemana is the Referee Assessor with Helly Zafinimanga from Madagascar to work as Pre-match Ceremony Coordinator.

The match will take place at Stade Kianja Barea in Antananarivo on Sunday, June 18, 2023 at 17H00.

With two round of matches to play Ghana sit in first place in Group E with 8 points following two wins (Madagascar, Angola) and two draws (Central African Republic, Angola) in the first four matches of the qualifiers.

The Black Stars will travel to Madagascar in June before Central African Republic in September wrap up the qualifiers.

“Every Hearts of Oak player will start at any GPL club” – Alhaji Akanbi

Hearts of Oak board member, Alhaji Akanbi has insisted that the hierarchy of the club cannot be accused of doing bad recruitment prior to the start of the 2022/23 football season.

According to the football administrator, the Phobians have the best players in Ghanaian top-flight.

Responding to media suggestions that their players are non-Hearts standard, Akanbi claimed that every Hearts player will start at any Ghana Premier League club.

“Every player at Hearts of Oak will be a starter in any team in Ghana so no one can blame us that we had a bad recruitment,” Alhaji Akanbi said.


The board member asserts that the 5-1 defeat against Medeama does not confirm the claims that Hearts have low level players.

“I still can’t believe it and couldn’t believe it yesterday. As a board member, we have done everything needed of us and we are still doing everything the team needs.

“The players didn’t do well. I don’t know what happened but this is not how they play. To be honest with you, they did not play well.”

2023 Ashanti Regional SHS athletics Super Zonal (Su-Zo) to begin on Thursday; check qualified schools

The 2023 Ashanti Regional Schools and Colleges Sports Federation Athletics Competition Super Zonal is scheduled to begin tomorrow.

The two-day event for the second-cycle schools in the Ashanti Region will run from Thursday, May 25, 2023, to Friday, May 26, 2023, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

A total of 40 schools are expected to compete in both Boys’ and Girls’ divisions.

It will be recalled that Bonwire Secondary Technical lost their qualification after using unqualified athletes to compete for the school during the inter-zonal. They occupied 5th place with Konongo Odumasi, but since they tied with Konongo Odumasi SHS, seven schools would have been qualified from the zone (Zone Two); hence, no school replaced them.

Also, Our Lady of Grace Boys has been disqualified from competing in the boys’ division and has been replaced by the 7th-placed school, Bodwesango SHS.

Ghana Muslim Mission SHS has also been disqualified from competing in the Super Zonals in the girls category and has been replaced by Konongo Odumasi.
Again, Kumasi High School, Adventist SHS, Kumasi, St. Joseph Seminary, and Mampong have all been disqualified from competing in any interschool sports program for two years.

Kumasi Anglican SHS is the only school with the most points, with 246 points in the Girl’s division.
T. I. AMASS-Kumasi Boys’ 194 points are also the most.

Kumasi Anglican student Florence Agyemang, who won a gold in the U-18 200m race for Ghana during the Africa Youth Championship in Zambia last month, set two new records in the 200m and 400m in the competition.

Newly-promoted Ghana Premier League side Nations FC in talks with Maxwell Konadu to take over coaching role

Local reports indicate that Nations FC, a team in the Division One League, is in discussions with Maxwell Konadu to become their new head coach. The club, which has secured promotion to the Ghana Premier League, is looking to strengthen its technical team in preparation for its debut season in the top flight.

Nations FC sealed their qualification to the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over West African Football Academy (WAFA) at the Dr Kwame Keyi Sports Complex last Saturday, guided by former Asante Kotoko assistant coach Johnson Smith.

However, according to footy.ghpush.com/, the club's leadership is engaged in talks with former Black Stars coach Maxwell Konadu to assume the role of head coach. Johnson Smith, previously with Skyy FC, is expected to be appointed as the assistant coach of the team.

Maxwell Konadu, who is currently the head coach of Legon Cities, has faced significant scrutiny following his team’s defeat against Bechem United. He criticized the players for their lack of training ahead of the match, which took place at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park.

Konadu is a respected and experienced coach in the Ghana Premier League.
