Ghana beat Cote D’Ivoire to progress to U-20 Girls Cup semis

Ghana scored three goals in either half to beat Cote D’Ivoire 3-1 in the ongoing WAFU Zone B U-20 Girls Cup of Nations in Kumasi.

The Black Princesses had a rough start to the game as the Ivorians were more confident and pushed for the opener.

But the team improved after the unimpressive opening 10 minutes as Mafia Nyame headed home from a well delivered corner kick by Wasima Mohammed in the 14th minute.

The goal changed the momentum of the game as the Princesses pushed to double their lead.

The Ivorians had a chance to restore parity but their effort was saved by Ghana goalkeeper Afi Amenyaku.

The Black Princesses doubled their lead in the 21st minute as Maafia Nyame whipped in a cross from the left-hand side for Stella Nyameke to score.

Right after recess, Helen Alormenu had a chance to extend Ghana’s lead but her effort was saved.

Deperou Digbeu reduced the deficit for Cote D’Ivoire in the 54th minute.

A neat one-two between Mary Amponsah and Maafia Nyame led to a low shot by the latter, to beat the goalkeeper for the third goal.

The game ended 3:1 in favor of the Black Princesses to go top of Group A with 6 points.

Ghana will play the second placed team in Group B in the semifinals of the U-20 Girls U-20 Cup of Nations.

Aduana Stars title ambitions crushed after defeat by Dreams FC

Aduana Stars’ aspirations of clinching the Ghana Premier League title were dealt a severe blow on Saturday as they suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Dreams FC in Dormaa.

With Medeama securing a comeback victory over King Faisal the previous day, opening up a four-point lead, Aduana knew that nothing less than a win would keep them in the title race. However, they encountered difficulties in breaking down a determined Dreams side.

Dreams FC claimed a significant triumph with a solitary goal from forward Ali Huzaf in the 54th minute. The goal proved to be the difference-maker, as Dreams held on to secure a crucial three points, extending their lead over the relegation zone to five points with just two matches remaining.

This defeat means that Aduana Stars, who had been leading the league for a significant portion of the season, will not be crowned champions for the third time, provided Medeama emerge victorious in their upcoming fixture against Samartex.

Aduana will undoubtedly be deeply disappointed with this turn of events, given their impressive performance throughout the campaign.

In another match on Saturday, Tamale City received a boost in their fight against relegation as Mohammed Yahaya scored the decisive goal, leading his team to a slender victory over Samartex at home. Bayern Munich sack CEO Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic

Salihamidzic was even in the stands at the RheinEnergieStadion as Bayern weathered a late scare to beat FC Koln 2-1 as Borussia Dortmund choked the chance to end their rival’s extended period of dominance.

Bayern were ahead at Koln in the first half to really up the pressure on leaders Dortmund, who found themselves 2-0 down in the first half on home soil against Mainz.

Sebastien Haller also missed a penalty during that time frame but Dortmund were eventually handed a lifeline when Koln levelled things up from the spot late in the day.

But Dortmund were unable to capitalise despite Niklas Sule’s late leveller after Jamal Musiala netted a dramatic winner for Bayern that etched their name on the famous trophy.

Yet there was an added twist for Bayern amid their jubilant title celebrations as the German media revealed that both Kahn and Salihamidzic had been sacked at full-time.

The Bosnian was watching on through his fingers in the stand above during the thriller and was even on the pitch celebrating passionately after Bayern had been crowned champions.

Jan Christian Dreesen is set to become Bayern’s new CEO, replacing Kahn.

There is no replacement for Salihamidzic at this moment in time meaning Tuchel, Dreesen, Uli Hoeness, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Herbert Hainer will be in charge of the squad and recruitment moving forward until an appointment is made.

Bayern fans have been frustrated by the work of Salihamidzic in recent times, particularly in the transfer market.

He has been working upstairs in Munich since 2017 before he was promoted to sporting director in 2020.

Sadio Mane has failed to prove a hit following his transfer from Liverpool last summer – a deal heavily backed by Salihamidzic – and the Senegal international could yet depart at the end of the season.

Joao Cancelo has also flopped after signing on loan from Manchester City in a shock move.

Meanwhile, legendary goalkeeper Kahn has been with the club since 2020 when he returned to the Allianz Arena.

Club officials cited ‘flu’ as the reason why the 55-year-old was not in attendance at the match.

Bundesliga: Bayern Munich champions after thrilling final day

Bayern Munich won an 11th consecutive Bundesliga title as they beat Cologne to overtake Borussia Dortmund on a thrilling final day.

Dortmund would have won their first title since 2011-12 had they beaten Mainz, but a 2-2 draw opened the door for Bayern.

They took advantage thank to Jamal Musiala’s 89th-minute winner.

A Cologne penalty had cancelled out Kingsley Coman’s earlier strike, but Musiala sent the away fans wild.

Dortmund’s players and fans were left dejected despite coming back from 2-0 down at the break, with Sebastian Haller also having a first-half penalty saved.

It looked like their title rivals had handed them the title when Cologne’s Dejan Ljubicic levelled from the penalty spot with just nine minutes remaining.

But Musiala curled home in the closing seconds to break the hearts of Dortmund, who equalised late on through Nicklas Sule.

It marked a successful end to the season for boss Thomas Tuchel, who replaced Julian Nagelsmann in March.

OKESS, St. Louis win 2023 Super Zonals; check full table for boys and girls divisions

Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School, affectionately known as ‘OKESS’, and arguably one of the best sports schools in Ghana, has won again the Super Zonal (SU-ZO) in the boys division in the just-ended 2023 Inter-Schools and Colleges Athletics competition of the Ashanti Region at the Baba Yara Stadium on Friday, May 26, 2023.

The competition began three weeks ago when the various schools competed on a zonal basis called inter-co to earn qualification into the Super Zonal.


The Super Zonal is the final stage of the athletic competition, and this is where the finest schools and athletes from the various zones compete.

OKESS

It started on Thursday, May 25, 2023, and ended on Friday, May 26, 2023.

The OKESS boys emerged as winners with an impressive 122 points.

In the girls division, St. Louis Senior High School won with 196 points.

This is OKESS’ third trophy in the competition after winning it in 1991 and 1992.

St. Louis, on the other hand, is winning it for the first time, breaking the dominance of the T.I. Amass girls.

Andre Ayew honoured for reaching 100 Premier League appearances

Black Stars captain Andre Ayew has been recognised for reaching a significant milestone in his football career, as he celebrates his century of appearances in the English Premier League.

Ayew made his Premier League debut on August 2015, for Swansea City after parting ways with Olympique Marseille against formidable opponents Chelsea FC. Since then, the hardworking forward has continued his Premier League journey, representing West Ham United before venturing outside of England.

Ayew later joined his current club Nottingham Forest as a free agent at the beginning of February adding to his impressive tally of Premier League appearances.

Throughout his Premier League career, Ayew has made a significant impact on the field. His journey includes 46 appearances for Swansea City, followed by 43 appearances for West Ham United, and 12 appearances for Nottingham Forest.

In addition to his remarkable Premier League milestone, Ayew recently achieved another significant feat by surpassing Asamoah Gyan as the player with the most appearances for the Ghana national team.

Prior to the World Cup, the Black Stars skipper set a new record, breaking Gyan’s 109 appearances. The 34-year-old forward is now Ghana’s most capped player, having accumulated an outstanding total of 113 appearances and contributed 24 goals to the national team.

Ayew’s exceptional skills, leadership qualities, and unwavering commitment have made him a prominent figure in Ghanaian football which stretches from his success in leading the Ghana U-20 team as captain to winning Africa’s first and only U-20 World Cup trophy.

GFA Disciplinary Committee release verdict of Olympics protest against Tamale City

The GFA Disciplinary Committee has dismissed Accra Great Olympics FC’s protest case against Tamale City FC in relation to their betPawa Premier League Matchday 27 game played at the WAFA Park in Sogakope.

According to the Disciplinary Committee, the violation in contention  is not sanctioned under the GFA Premier League Regulations but rather a fine in accordance with the provisions of the GFA Club Licensing Regulations and the GFA Club Licensing Book of Sanctions.

A fine of GHc20,000 has therefore been imposed on Tamale City FC for failing to appoint a Head Coach after being granted 30-day grace period given to the Club.

Tamale City FC has been asked to immediately appoint a Head Coach to replace Coach Walid Mohammed who travelled outside the country for medical reasons.

The decision has been communicated to all parties with aggrieved parties given within one day of being notified of the decision to appeal before the GFA Appeals Committee.

Match report: Medeama SC maintain top spot with King Faisal win

Medeama SC came from behind to behind to beat King Faisal 2-1 at the Akoon Park in Tarkwa on Friday. Nurudeen Abdulai and Joshua Agyemang scored in either half to give their side all the spoils having had an earlier setback in the 10th minute mark.

The mauves and yellows needed a win to keep hold of the top spot while King Faisal went into the game in search of the points to improve their placing in the log.

The visitors took the lead in the 10th minute through Captain Samuel Kusi who dove into the back of the net a sublime volley after seeing the goalkeeper off his lines.

The lead lasted for only 10 minutes as Nurudeen Abdulai came up with a towering header to nod home the equalizer in the 20th minute mark.

The game became more concentrated in the middle as both sides kept pushing for a goal but chances were far and few as the first half ended 1-1.

Medeama SC looked more determined in the opening 10 minutes of the second half and saw their efforts rewarded in the 67th minute when they increased the tally through Joshua Agyemang.

Agyemang had the easiest job on the pitch as he cleverly tapped in from close range to send the home fans into a frenzy.

The win keeps Medeama SC at the top of the betPawa Premier League table with 56 points – 4 points ahead of second placed Aduana FC who play Dreams FC on Saturday.

Cameroonian striker Albert Eonde reveals what he needs to start scoring goals for Hearts of Oak

Albert Diego Dieudonne Eonde, the forward for Hearts of Oak, has addressed his recent goal drought and expressed his determination to improve his performance on the field.

Eonde acknowledges that he has not been able to score goals since joining the Ghanaian club from the Zimbabwean league, but he takes responsibility for his performance and does not make excuses. “What I can say is that I won’t give any excuse. I’ve been scoring goals in my previous teams and I came here to do same job.

Eonde emphasizes that scoring goals without winning matches is meaningless and he is committed to working hard until he regains his scoring touch.

“Scoring without winning is unnecessary. I will keep on working until I get it right. I won’t make any promises, but when the breakthrough comes, it will change everything and boost my confidence level. I just need that one goal for the rest to flow,” Eonde explained.

Eonde is confident that once he breaks through with a goal, it will have a positive impact on his confidence and overall performance.

He understands the importance of that breakthrough and believes it will change everything for him. Despite his current goal drought, he remains unfazed and believes in his ability to rediscover his scoring form. He is focused on adapting to his new environment and maintaining a positive mindset.

Hearts of Oak, as a team, have also struggled in front of goal, experiencing four defeats in their last five games. They are currently aiming for a top-four finish in the Premier League standings.
