Ghanaian clubs miss out on maiden African Football League

Africa’s highest ranked football clubs will compete in the exciting new ‘Super’ competition, the Inaugural African Football League (AFL) which is designed to showcase the best of African club football and provide football fans in Africa and around the world, the opportunity to see and enjoy the very best of the beautiful game on the African Continent.

The AFL is a partnership between CAF and FIFA. The Inaugural edition of the AFL will feature 8 of Africa’s most famous and successful teams from the 3 African Regional Blocks which are: the North Region, the Central-West Region and the South-East Region.

Egyptian giants Al Ahly Football Club, Tunisia’s Espérance Sportive de Tunis and Wydad Athletic Club from Morocco are the football clubs from the North Region.

The clubs from the Central-West Region are: Nigeria’s Enyimba Football Club and the DRC’s Tout Puissant Mazembe.

Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club from South Africa, Angola’s Atlético Petróleos de Luanda and Tanzania’s Simba Sports Club are the football clubs from the South-East Region.

The draw for the Inaugural AFL competition will be held in Cairo, Egypt, on 2 September 2023, at 19H00, Cairo Time and will be streamed live on the AFL website and televised by CAF’s broadcast partners.

The fixtures of the Inaugural AFL competition are structured on a home and away basis. The competition starts with knock-out quarter finals and will be followed by the semi-finals and the final; all of which are played over two legs.

This historic Inaugural edition of the AFL will take place over four weeks, kicking off with the Opening Ceremony and the first match on 20 October 2023 in Dar es Salam, Tanzania.

The semi-finals will take place between 29 October and 1 November.

The final matches which will determine the winner of the Inaugural AFL competition will take place on 5 and 11 November 2023.

The Inaugural AFL is a precursor to the fully-fledged AFL competition which will feature the 24 highest ranked football clubs on the African Continent and will commence during the 2024/2025 football season.

Fans of football around the world can keep up to date with the latest news and information on the most exciting club football competition in Africa via the AFL website, as well as social media platforms Facebook, Instagram and X (Twitter).

The AFL website will also offer live Over-The-Top (“OTT”) access to the draw and all AFL matches as well as supporting feature content to keep fans engaged throughout the entire competition from 3 September 2023 onwards.

GFA announce prize money for 2023/24 Ghana Premier League winner up to 10th position

The hierarchy of the Ghana Football Association(GRA), has revealed the prize money for the winner of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League.

The winner will earn GHS 500,000 as prize money when the season comes to a close.

This was made known by President Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 during the launch of the football season at the Eastern Premier Hotel in Koforidua.

The League winner will take home a trophy and 40 gold medals while the 1st and 2nd runner-ups receive GHS 200,000, 40 silver medals and GHS 100,000, 40 Bronze medals respectively.

He also confirmed the GFA will reward clubs from the first to the tenth position in order to increase competitiveness of the League.

“To increase the competitiveness of the league, the Ghana Football Association will reward from the first to the 10th place in the 2023/24 betPawa Premier League.”

The 2023/24 Ghana Premier League is set to kick off on Friday, September 15, 2023.

5 players to return to Chris Hughton’s squad for 2023 Afcon qualifier against CAR; check out the list

Five players are set to return to the Black Stars squad ahead of their clash against the Central African Republic (CAR) in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

In their previous match against Madagascar, coach Hughton was without some key players who missed out due to injury for the crucial encounter which ended scoreless delaying Ghana’s qualification to their 24th AFCON tournament to be held in Ivory Coast next year.

However, the 64-year-old gaffer could be getting a good number of key players who have recuperated successfully and resumed actively.

Antoine Semenyo

The 23-year-old came off the bench to give the Black Stars an invaluable victory over Angola in Kumasi, scoring Ghana’s first goal under Hughton. However, an injury in May prevented him from reporting for the following call-up. Given his recent performance for Bournemouth in the Premier League, which included scoring an outstanding goal against Liverpool in their second game of the season, Semenyo has successfully recovered and is poised to reclaim his place in the team.

Inaki Williams

Williams was another notable omission from Hughton’s squad against Madagascar since he had to withdraw in order to concentrate on getting treatment for a persistent pain that he had been playing with toward the end of the previous season. Ransford-Yeboah Konigsdorffer was consequently brought in to take the position of the 29-year-old.

To ensure that Williams had enough time to heal for the upcoming season, he had to be left out of Athletic Bibao’s initial pre-season squad. Fortunately, the forward is in excellent condition again and has had a strong start to the 2023/24 La Liga season, scoring in the second game and providing an assist in the third for his team.

Baba Rahman

After the 2022 World Cup, Baba Rahman had been battling with injuries which saw him missing all three matches after the tournament while being kept on the sidelines for many games for Reading FC last season.

After the season, he ended his contract with Chelsea and secured a transfer to PAOK in Greece, where he has excelled during his brief presence. With Chris Hughton in charge, the 29-year-old left-back is set to get his first call-up and compete for a spot in the squad as they get ready for the pivotal match against CAR.

Alexander Djiku

Like Inaki Williams, Djiku was named in the squad for the game against Madagascar but had to be replaced by Kasim Nuhu Adams due to an ankle injury sustained in French Ligue 1.

The defender has subsequently switched clubs and looks set to return to the team and assume his vital role as centre-back alongside Daniel Amartey.

Gideon Mensah

Mensah also withdrew from the squad for the Madagascar clash after further evaluation determined that his condition was more severe than initially anticipated.

Thankfully the 25-year-old has returned from injury and is playing actively for his club Auxerre in the French Ligue 2. He lasted the full throttle in their last game against Grenoble and helped his team keep a clean sheet despite being left out in the previous two games.

Asante Kotoko striker Georges Mfuege has praised new signing Yussif Mohammed Nurudeen for his impressive qualities describing him as Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk.

The defender joined the Porcupine Warriors in the ongoing transfer window after ending his stay with Real Tamale United at the end of last season.

Mfuege who has already spent two seasons with Kotoko shared his experience while playing against the centre-back highlighting the difficulties he encountered due to his immense qualities.

According to Mfuege, it is even good news to have Nurudeen in his team reducing the challenges he would encounter in the upcoming season.

“He plays like Van Dijk. He has everything. Good in the air and on the ground physically and technically [He’s is good]

“Sure [I’m happy he won’t be my opponent anymore]. I don’t like it when defenders push me and chase me with so many tackles so if he is in my team now, I am very happy about that.”

Nurudeen has joined his teammates in Beposo for their pre-season training as they continue to prepare for the new Ghana Premier League.

They will lock horns with Heart of Lions in their first match of the season.

2023 GFA Elections put on hold

The Ghana Football Association has decided to put the 2023 GFA Election Timetable on hold.

This follows a Motion filed at the High Court by King Faisal FC, a Division One League Zone 2 club.

The GFA therefore wishes to inform all its members and stakeholders (especially Applicants who have filed their Nomination Forms for various positions) of the suspension of the 2023 GFA Elections process until the hearing of the motion on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.

The announcement of the Decision by the Elections Committee following the Vetting of the Applicants has therefore been put on hold.

The Association wishes to urge all members, clubs and applicants to remain calm. The Association will endeavour to seek appropriate legal redress for the prompt return to the 2023 Election Timetable and ensure that the calendar is not further disrupted.

Former Ghana President, John Dramani Mahama has rescued former Black Queens goalkeeper, Memunatu Sulemana.

Sulemana in an interview with Accra-based Original FM revealed that she has been living in a makeshift house at Kaneshie in Accra.

Sulemana’s revelation comes as a shock to the football world having had an inspiring football career.

According to a report by the Daily Post, ex-President John Dramani Mahama has taken the bold step to rescue a veteran Ghanaian goalkeeper after learning of the terrible state she currently finds herself in.

Mahama gave Memunatu Sulemana a fully furnished one-bedroom apartment in the Accra suburb of Dansoman on Monday, August 28, 2023.

Additionally, John Mahama provided Memunatu Sulemana with a financial donation through friends and colleagues to help her get started and make sure she finds a new road to success.

The 45-year-old played for Ghana at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and played over 30 matches for Ghana’s women’s national team in a career that spanned over a decade.

Sulemana was part of the national team that made its debut at the FIFA World Cup in 1999, hosted by the United States.

She was also featured at the 2003 and 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments in the United States and China, respectively.

Her club career included stints with Post Ladies in Ghana and Pelican Stars in Nigeria’s Women’s Premier League.

Sulemana said despite her decorated career, she earned very little while playing football, which has led her to her current situation.

In 2018, she was invited by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to assist with the draw for that year’s Women’s African Cup of Nations hosted in Ghana.

Two years later, she was also named as a member of the technical team of Ghana’s U17 female national team, the Black Maidens.

Sulemana was appointed as the team’s goalkeepers’ trainer and later occupied the same role for the Black Queens.

Oyerepa Sports has gathered that Kurt Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has officially filed a formal complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in response to alleged threats on his life made by Wilfred Osei Palmer, a former GFA presidential contender.

Subsequently, Wilfred Osei Palmer, accompanied by his legal counsel Kwesi Nyantakyi, a former GFA President, attended an invitation extended by the CID department last Thursday.

During their appearance, Osei Palmer and his legal representative sought to present their viewpoint on the matter and cooperate with the ongoing investigative proceedings.

Additional details indicate that an individual identified as David purportedly reached out to Kurt Okraku, informing him of an alleged scheme by Osei Palmer to cause him harm. Allegedly, Palmer had reportedly promised financial compensation to David in exchange for carrying out the harm against the GFA president.

As per the provided report, David expressed a favorable opinion of Kurt Okraku and thus chose to communicate the alleged threat to him. Furthermore, it is claimed that David sought monetary compensation from the FA boss.

Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Richard Senanu completes move to Legon Cities

After successful negotiations, former Asante Kotoko midfielder Richard Senanu has officially joined Legon Cities FC.

The skillful midfielder has inked a two-year contract with Legon Cities FC, with the agreement subject to a medical examination.

Senanu’s move to Legon Cities FC comes after departing from Nations FC, a team that earned promotion to the 2023/24 season of the Ghana Premier League.

His journey to Legon Cities FC follows his stint with Nations FC, formerly known as Bekwai Youth Club, which he joined in January 2022 after his release from Asante Kotoko.

Senanu’s time at Asante Kotoko came to an end due to being deemed surplus to requirements, stemming from his recovery from a career-threatening injury.

The 27-year-old midfielder will find familiarity at Legon Cities FC as he reunites with his former coach from Asante Kotoko, Paa Kwesi Fabin.

In 2018, Senanu faced a setback when he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during a CAF Confederation Cup qualifier against Cameroonian giants Coton Sport. He subsequently underwent surgery in Germany and underwent nearly two years of recovery.

Following his recovery, he regained full fitness and was included in Mariano Barreto’s squad for the recently concluded season, although he was unable to participate in competitive matches.

Senanu played a pivotal role in helping Nations FC secure promotion to the top-tier league in the previous season.

Ampem Darkoa Ladies, the Ghanaian champions, have secured a place in the final of the ongoing WAFU Zone B Women’s Champions League qualifiers.

They achieved this by defeating their Beninese counterparts, Sam Nelly FC, with an impressive score of 6-1 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Monday evening.

From the outset, the ‘Nanamma’ team applied intense pressure on their opponents, resulting in an early goal just one minute into the match, courtesy of Tracey Twum.

Ophelia Amponsah came close to doubling the lead on the 10th minute, but her close-range tap-in narrowly missed the target.

Within minutes of that missed opportunity, Tracey Twum scored again with a brave header, securing her second goal of the match.

In the 18th minute, the Ghanaian champions found the back of the net once more, this time with Mary Amponsah connecting a Nancy Amoh free kick to notch her eighth goal in the competition.

Just before half-time, Ophelia Amponsah scored another header, extending Ampem Darkoa’s lead to four goals.

After the break, Sam Nelly managed to pull one goal back nine minutes into the second half.

On the 63rd minute, the Blue and Whites reestablished their four-goal lead with a stunning long-range goal from Nancy Amoh. Three minutes later, Tracey Twum completed her hat-trick, sealing the final score at 6-1.

Ampem Darkoa Ladies have advanced to the final and will face the Nigerian side Delta Queens. They must secure victory at all costs to earn a place in the third edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League.
