President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) and veteran commentator Kwabena Yeboah has warned clubs may ‘go extinct’ if the suspended Ghana Premier League season is completely annulled as proper by some club administrators.

The 2019/2020 football activities in the West African country have been frozen since March after a ban was placed on social media by government due to spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

But speaking on PM Express on May 20, 2020, Mr Yeboah echoed that the local clubs could crumble if the season is cancelled.

‘Even when the league was in full flight, the clubs suffered a great deal. Embarrassingly in Ghana, some of our players take home a poultry 100 dollars at the end of the month and you will just wonder how they will survive on that. If the league is cancelled, I bet you that quite a number of our teams could be extinct,” Mr Yeboah told Gary Al-Smith on PM Express.

The SWAG President also appealed to government to assist clubs with some stimulus package in order to lessen the financial package of the clubs in this COVID-19 pandemic period.

Kwabena Yeboah was on the show with sportscaster Robert Marawa and international commentators Peter Drury and Jon Champion.

French trainer Hervé Renard has claimed that Ghana’s all-time leading goalscorer, Asamoah Gyan, was lazy in training.

According to Renard, Gyan could have had a much better footballing career if he was dedicated and committed in training as he was during competitive matches.

Renard worked with Gyan when he was assistant coach of the Black Stars during the 2008 AFCON
which was held in Ghana under the tutelage of Claude Le Roy.

“The quality of Asamoah Gyan was amazing. I was always impressed with his timing of headers,” the Saudi Arabia coach said in an interview with TV3.

“He was a very good goalscorer, fantastic player, amazing player.

“But I have something to tell him. He was supposed to have a better career, but he was lazy,” Renard said while laughing.

“In training, he was lazy. He only likes the games. But he was the most important player but I know him and he didn’t like the training, he only likes the competition, the games,” he concluded.
