Match report: Kotoko fall at Samartex

FC Samartex continued their impressive home form with a 1-0 win against Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko. This marks the Sameraboi club’s fifth consecutive home victory in the season.

Samartex took control of the game from the start, with the first chance falling to Baba Hamadu Musah, who unfortunately couldn’t find the back of the net.

However, Emmanuel Keyekeye stepped up and scored a brilliant free kick in the 30th minute of the first half, securing his third goal of the season. The former Asante Kotoko and Karela United midfielder has been enjoying a fantastic season.

Despite a close call for Kotoko in the 37th minute due to a defensive error by Samartex’s Ebenezer Acquah, the ball was eventually cleared for a throw-in.

Samartex dominated the second half, coming close to doubling their lead in the 66th and 68th minutes. The home side displayed resilience in defense, thwarting any attempts by The Porcupine Warriors to make inroads at their home ground.

Asante Kotoko struggled to make an impact or pose a goal threat in the second half, leading to their second consecutive defeat under Coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum this season.

With this victory, Samartex climbed to second place on the league table with 16 points, while Asante Kotoko remains 15th with 10 points after week 10 of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League.

Ghana forward Raphael Dwamena passed on on Saturday afternoon during a league match in Albania.

Dwamena suffered a heart attack and died during KF Egnatia game against FK Partizani in the Albanian Super Cup.

The former Real Zaragoza attacker suffered a heart attack in the 24th minute of the game and subsequently passed on.

Dwamena died at the age of 28.

Black Stars forward Raphael Dwamena has passed away after collapsing on a football pitch today.

News of his passing came in the aftermath of the 28 year old suffering a cardiac arrest during a game between his Albanian side Egnatia Rrogozhine and Partizani.

The tragic incident happened in the 23rd minute of the Superliga Match Day 13 matchup that forced the game to be suspended.

Dwamena was diagnosed with a heart condition in 2017 and had an implantable cardioverter-defribillator (ICD) to monitor his heart rate in 2020 during his time with Spanish side Levante.

Despite this medical intervention, Dwamena suffered from a relapse in October, 2021 when he collapsed on the pitch in a game involving Blau-Weiss and Harterg in the Austrian League.

However, he survived after he was stabilized quickly and recovered in the hospital; the game was abandoned. He was later released by the club.

His heart condition was the main factor behind his move to Danish Superliga side Velje Boldklub falling through after a deal was agreed with the club’s sporting director expressing concern over Dwamena’s heart measurement.

Dwamena was part of a 30 man Black Stars squad called up for the 2017 AFCON competition but missed out on a spot in the 23 man squad selected for the biannual tournament.

He scored on his international debut in a 2017 AFCON qualifier against Ethiopia under Kwasi Appiah.

Ghana coach Chris Hughton has discussed his responsibilities as the leader of the Black Stars technical staff following widespread rumors of his impending dismissal.

In an interview with BBC News Africa, Hughton said he was given the responsibility of both improving the current Black Stars squad and producing positive outcomes.

The Irish-born of Ghanaian descent stated he will always give the Black Stars his all, but they won’t always prevail in games.

“My role as the coach of the Black Stars is to get the best results and the best performances from the team,” he told BBC Africa.
“You can’t always get that, but what you can always do, you can always learn from your previous experiences whether it is good or bad.
“And ultimately, I will work as hard as I always do to try to get things the best way that we can,” he added.

According to reports published in Ghanaian media on Thursday, the Ghana Football Association and the Ghanaian government are debating terminating the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager’s contract.

The nation’s football association, however, dismissed the rumors and unveiled a 25-man roster for this month’s 2026 FIFA World Cup against Madagascar and Comoros.

Following three victories and two draws in his opening five games, Hughton lost both of Ghana’s international friendlies in October—the team first lost 2-0 to Mexico and then was humiliated 4-0 by the United States.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) chose Hughton to replace Otto Addo, who left the position following the Black Stars’ elimination from the 2022 FIFA World Cup group stage.

Ali Mohammed late strike seals win for Accra Lions over Karela United

Mohammed Yahaya and Ali Mohammed scored in either half as Accra Lions claimed a 2-1 victory over Karela United in Accra.

Accra Lions were off to a bright start after scoring in the 3rd minute of the game though Mohammed Yahaya.

Ibrahim Tanko’s side went into the game looking for their second consecutive home win after a patchy run of form led to a four-game winless streak.

After a slim first half lead – Karela United equalised on the stroke of full time following a strike from Samuel Kumi in the 91st but his goal was short lived after Ali Mohammed restored Accra Lions lead inside 92nd minute.

The hosts sat back after the second goal and protected the lead until the full time whistle.

Accra Lions have now moved to the 8th spot with 13 points while Karela United drop to the 16th position with 9 points.

Bashir Hayford confirms talks with Hearts Of Oak

Former Asante Kotoko coach Bashir Hayford has confirmed Hearts of Oak have contacted him for their head coach position.

The Phobians are struggling in the ongoing Ghana Premier League just nine weeks into the season, despite high hopes prior to the start of the season. They currently have 10 points and are winless in their last fifteen away games, stretching from last year.

Many pundits as well as supporters of the Accra-based club have called for the sacking of current gaffer Martin Koopman following the poor performance of the club.

Reports emerged ahead of their tie against Bibiani GoldStars that Koopman was given a two-game ultimatum to save his job.

According to Hayford, the hierarchy of the club reached out to him, and he submitted his credentials, waiting for their call.

“Hearts of Oak contacted me, and I sent them my CV. The approach was made when they were going to play Gold Stars.

“If they think the current coach is underperforming and therefore my service is needed, I will be very happy to join them.”

The experienced gaffer has had stint with Legon Cities in the Ghana Premier League and the Black Queens of Ghana.

Chris Hughton names Black Stars squad for Madagascar, Comoros qualifiers

Kasim Adams, Daniel Amartey, Osman Bukari and KamalDeen Sulemana have returned to the Black Stars for this month’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Madagascar and Comoros.

The quartet have been named alongside Captain Andre Ayew, Denis Odoi, Majeed Ashimeru and Baba Idrissu in a 25-man squad for the double header.

Ghana will host Madagascar on Friday, November 17, 2023 at the Baba Yara Sports stadium before facing Comoros in Moroni on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.

Ghana midfielder Mohammed Kudus has won West Ham United’s Goal of the Month for October with his sensational strike against Newcastle United. 

The 23-year-old debut Premier League goal helped West secure a point against the Magpies at the London Olympic Stadium last month.

Kudus beat competition from teammate Lucas Paqueta, whose brace against Freiburg was nominated, and strikes from Roki Ueki of the women’s team and Gideon Kodua of the U21 side.

The Black Stars midfielder followed that goal against Newcastle United with two stunning strikes in November. Kudus was on target against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup before netting a bicycle kick against Brentford.

Both goals are expected to be nominated for the November Goal of the Month.

The Right to Dream Academy graduate has already scored five goals for the Hammers since his summer move to London in the summer transfer window.
