Chris Hughton is unfit for Black Stars job, sack him – Mohammed Polo

Former Ghanaian international Mohammed Polo has been a vocal supporter of Chris Hughton’s dismissal as Black Stars coach.

With Ghana’s lackluster performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, pressure has mounted on the Irish-Ghanaian trainer.

Hughton’s coaching style has come under fire when the Black Stars narrowly lost to Comoros at the Moroni Stadium, despite winning 1-0 against Madagascar in the opening World Cup qualifying match.

Polo voiced his displeasure with the national team’s performance and called for a leadership change in an interview with Koforidua-based Bryt FM.

The 1978 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion feels that Hughton has overstayed his welcome and is unfit for the position, claiming the former manager of the Premier League is bad for Ghanaians.

“I think Chris Hughton has overstayed his welcome. To be frank, he does not fit the job. He is destroying our football; he is even making things worse for us. We must show him the exit door and appoint someone who can make things better for us,” Polo declared.

“As a legend of the game, I realised that Chris Hughton’s led technical team are not good and don’t even know what they are doing.”

The call for Hughton’s dismissal adds to the growing chorus of dissatisfaction among football enthusiasts in Ghana.

BREAKING: Bofoakwa Tano part ways with Frimpong Manso and his assistant

Ghana Premier League side Bofoakwa Tano have mutually parted ways with head coach Frimpong Manso after their latest draw at home over the weekend.

The football legend was recently hired at the start of the current season, as the club made a return to the league after 16 years.

However, the club on Thursday morning confirmed ending their contract with Manso as well as assistant coach of the side Isaac Kofi Sarfo.

Nsoatreman FC held the top-flight returnees to a goalless draw at the Sunyani Coronation Park in match week 11 of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League on Sunday.

The home side has now won just one of their last eight league matches, while the visitors have four wins from their last seven games.

The draw left Bofoakwa Tano in fifth place on the league table with 16 points, struggling for wins after their impressive start.

The drawn game resulted in fans of Bofoakwa Tano attacking Nsoatreman head coach Maxwell Konadu, leaving him unconscious. He was hospitalized for some time.

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has responded to a viral video of Ghanaian Member of Parliament Isaac Adongo apologising to him following his recent good run of form.

The MP for Bolgatanga Central rendered an unqualified apology to the England international in Parliament on Tuesday, November 21, for comparing him to Ghana’s Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia when he referred to them as poor performers.

Maguire, at the time of Adongo’s initial evaluation, was underperforming for the Red Devils and was even ‘scoring own goals’ to help the cause of opponents, prompting a comparison with Ghana’s Vice President and Head of Economic Management under whose watch the country’s economy has taken a beating.

Maguire has since turned the corner and gone on to become an important figure at Old Trafford, displacing Raphael Varane in Erik ten Hag’s starting line-up while Dr Bawumia is yet to turn Ghana’s economy around.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, Mr Adongo said “Will you prefer Mr Mahama’s economy where you were drinking your kalyppo for 50 pesewas, to your (era)… where you are buying that Kalyppo for GH₵6? Which do you prefer? You have inflated your revenue by over GH₵40 billion so that you can now project expenditure of GH₵226 billion so you can have GH₵40 billion cushion for reckless expenditure in an election year, that is all that you have done.”

Reacting to the video which has gone viral, the Man United central defender accepted the MP’s apology.

“MP Issac Adongo apology accepted. See you at Old Trafford soon,” Maguire responded to a post on ‘X’ regarding the video.

Maguire following England’s qualification to the 2024 European Championships is expected to return to club football with United when they face Everton over the weekend in the Premier League.

“Mr Speaker you remember that last year, I was very quick to compare my big brother, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to Harry Maguire. Mr Speaker, I am now apologising to Harry Maguire. Today Maguire has turned, he is a transformational footballer,” Adongo said.

“Harry Maguire is now scoring goals for Manchester United. Harry Maguire is now a key player for Manchester, as for our Maguire [Dr Bawumia], he is now roaming at the IMF with a cup in hand. As for our economic Maguire, he was able to get our pensioners to leave their homes and come and parade in the streets,” he added.

The first phase of the 2023–24 Ashanti Regional Inter-Schools and Colleges boys’ soccer competition will commence on Thursday, December 14, 2023, with group stage matches at the various centres.

The group stage games are scheduled to end on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, before the winners of each group progress to the round of 32, which has been tentatively scheduled to begin on Tuesday, January 9, 2024.

The Ashanti Sports and Colleges Federation is set to hold a Technical Meeting with all Physical Education tutors in the second cycle institutions within the region on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at the Anglican Senior High School.

The schools have been put in Pots 1, 2, 3, and 4 according to their respective positions at the last group stage soccer competition.

Schools in each pot will be grouped into 8 groups of 4, with each group winner advancing to the round of 32.

The balloting or draw is expected to be done before the Technical Meeting.

Defending Champions SIMMS Senior High School have been placed in Pot 1 alongside Aduman, Prempeh College, Kumasi High School, T.I. Amass-Kumasi, Opoku Ware School, and others.

2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Comoros defeat Ghana to go top of Group I

The Black Stars of Ghana suffered a shocking defeat against Comoros on matchday two of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday, November 21.

The Coelacanths claimed all three points at home to go top of Group I having already beaten Central African Republic in their first game.

Antoine Semenyo should have given Ghana the lead in the opening six minutes of the game but the Bournemouth forward’s effort went into the side net.

Jordan Ayew also came close to putting Ghana in front but his header from six yards out went just wide of the Comoros post.

Myziane Maolida went on a solo run after picking up the ball in the midfield before beating Richard Ofori in the penalty box to open the scoring.

The 43rd-minute strike gave the home side the advantage heading into the break.

After the recess, Chris Hughton introduced Mohammed Kudus who replaced Andre Ayew in the starting lineup.

Back-to-back chances for Semenyo and Inaki Williams in the early stages of the second still couldn’t find the back of the net.

Substitute Majeed Ashimeru tried his luck from a long way out to catch the goalkeeper by surprise but failed to get his attempt on target.

Inaki was handed a late chance at goal from an Abdul Fatawu Issahaku cross but his header failed to trouble the goalkeeper.

Despite their late fight to get the equaliser, Chris Hughton’s men were never going to draw level with the game going on to end in defeat for them.

The win sees Comoros go top of Group I after two wins in two games while Ghana stay on three points.

Raphael Amponsah’s late strike secured a hard-fought win for Hearts of Oak as they defeated neighbours Accra Lions 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium. 

The Phobians got off to a bright start after Hamza Issah opened the scoring five minutes into the game, but Absss Samari levelled for Lions before the break.

Hearts of Oak wasted no time in establishing their intentions after Issah rose high to head home from an Ibrahim Salifu cross.

The Rainbow Club came close a few minutes later through a set piece, but Lions warmed themselves into the game as they began to control possession.

Ali Mohammed and Baba Apiiga came close halfway through the game before Yahaya Mohammed saw his effort collected by Richmond Ayi.

Accra Lions made it count after a period of dominance when Abass Samari connected to a lovely cross from Apiiga in the 26th minute.

The host nearly took the lead at the stroke of half-time after Yahaya met a pass from Samari.

After the break, Lions controlled the game in terms of possession but struggled to create chances.

Deep into the game, Albert Eonde sent in a cross into the box before Issah controlled the ball and laid it on to Amposnah, who fired pass to Daniel Afful.

Hearts held to clinch victory against their neighbours.
