Afcon 2021Q: Ten players report on first Black Stars training ahead of Sudan clash

Ghana captain Andre Ayew was joined by nine other players on the first day of training as the Black Stars of Ghana commenced preparations for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sudan, Thursday. 

The players include returnee Afriyie Acquah, Saudi based Samuel Owusu, Crystal Palace striker Jordan Ayew, Tarique Fosu of Brentford, John Antwi and Ashantigold defender Kwadwo Amoako. Others were Razak Abalora, Nicholas Opoku and Emmanuel Lomotey.

Other players are expected to arrive this evening with the rest on Tuesday.

The team is currently training at the La McDan Park.

The Black Stars, who sit top of group C, will play as hosts to Sudan in Ghana for the first-leg before travelling for the second-leg five days later in Omdurman.

Coach C. K Akonnor has updated his initial 23-man squad with seven additions to his squad ahead of Ghana’s doubleheader against Sudan due to injuries and some clubs feeling reluctant to release players.

The players include Andrew Kyere Yiadom (Reading FC), Majeed Ashimeru (Red Bull Salzburg), Joseph Attamah Larweh (Keyserispor), Afriyie Acquah (Yeni Malatyaspor) and Clifford Aboagye (Tijuana FC).

Meanwhile, Thomas Partey doubtful after picking up a knock over the weekend in Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

The game is scheduled to take place in Cape Coast on Thursday.

AshantiGold SC have been drawn giants West African neighbours Salitas FC in CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round after Monday’s draw.

The Miners play at home in the first leg before travelling to Burkina Faso for the second leg.

The winner of this tie will tackle the winner between Sudanese side Alamal Atbara and KVZ Sports Club of Zanzibar in the first round of the competition.

Salitas FC

Salitas were the very first club from Burkina Faso to make the group stages of CAF interclubs competition in the 2018/2019 campaign.

The first leg comes off 27 – 29 November 2020.

The second leg is scheduled for 4 – 6 December 2020.

Salitas won the Burkina Faso Cup and Super Cup in 2018.

Over 30 officials, players of Hearts of Oak test positive for COVID-19

Hearts of Oak have been hit by the Coronavirus pandemic with Oyerepa FM reporting that over 30 personnel including officials and players have tested positive.

Ahead of the opening weekend of the 2020/2021 Ghana Premier League season, the Phobians have been putting things in place to ensure everybody is safe.

Following a routine Coronavirus testing, reports according to the Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM has revealed that 31 Persons comprising of Players, technical Team, and Secretariat staff have tested positive.

This comes as a big blow for the Ghanaian giants who are preparing to travel to Dormaa to face off with Aduana Stars in the Ghana Premier League in the upcoming weekend.

It is now understood that the Hearts of Oak Secretariat has been closed down with persons who have tested positive for the virus under isolation per the health guidelines.

Caf CL Draw: Asante Kotoko to face FC Nouadhibou in prelims

The Porcupine Warriors have been paired with the reigning Mauritanian Premier League Champions in the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

Asante Kotoko will be battling out with FC Nouadhibou in the CAF Champions League this month. The Ghanaian giants were drawn alongside the Mauritanian club during a draw for the competition on Monday. 

Winner of the two-legged fixture will face either Al Hilal of Sudan or Ugandan giants Vipers FC FC Nouadhibou is the most successful club in Mauritania Football, winning their top-flight league eight times. 

They have emerged as champions for three consecutive season since 2017/18 season. FC Nouadhibou was founded in 1999 

The club qualified for the group stage of the 2019-20 CAF Confederation Cup after defeating Triangle FC of Zimbabwe 4-3 on aggregate in the play-off round.

The Porcupine Warriors have released the official squad numbers of their players with five days left for the top-flight’s kick off across the country

Asante Kotoko have announced the squad numbers of their first team players ahead of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season and Brazilian midfielder Fabio Gama da Silver becomes the new poster boy.

The 28-year-old has been handed over the icon number 10 jersey previously worn by Songne Yacouba even before he touches down in Ghana.

Sulley Muniru, the younger brother of former Sulley Muntari, will also wear number 8 while Emmanuel Keyekeh who joined Kotoko from Karela United takes over the number 6 shirt.

Meanwhile, Kwame Poku who has netted six times in five pre-season games will be wearing number 9 but Augustine Okrah and Felix Annan will maintain jersey numbers 26 and 12 respectively.

Kotoko will play Eleven Wonders from Techiman on Matchday one at the Accra Sports Stadium before they travel to Golden City Park in Berekum to face Berekum Chelsea.

Frank Nelson promises Hearts players financial reward ahead of Aduana Stars clash

Accra Hearts Of Oak Board Member, Mr. Frank Nelson Nwokolo has promised a motivational financial package for the club’s playing body ahead of Saturday’s Ghana Premier League opener.

The 2020-21 Ghana Premier League is set to commence on November 14 and the Phobians will play as guests to Aduana Stars in Dormaa.

The fixture is expected to be intriguing as the Fire boys are strong at home and would be hoping to begin the season with a win.

According to Oyerepa FM, Mr. Frank Nelson Nwokolo has promised the playing body GHS 10,000 aside their winning bonus if they are able to beat Aduana Stars in the season’s Opener at their backyard.

The Rainbow Club has been impressive in the pre-season recording wins over Soccer Scientific Academy, Premier League side Elmina Sharks and others.

The game is scheduled to kick-off 15:00GMT and will be telecast live by Television right holder, StarTimes.

Besiktas midfielder Bernard Mensah quits Ghana national team

Turkey-based midfielder Bernard Mensah has announced that he is taking a temporary break from international football after a chequered five-year stint.

This comes days after the Besiktas star was excluded from a 24-man squad to face Sudan in a double-header of the  2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Mensah, 26, claims he wants to concentrate on club football.

A statement on his Twitter account read: ”I have decided to take a break from the national team until further notice .. I want to concentrate on my career for now .. thanks to all Ghanaians for their support.”

Last month (October), he was invited for the friendly matches against Mali and Qatar in Turkey but was handed limited game time against the African side.

Mensah has been a bit-part player of the Black Stars since scoring on his debut on 8 June, 2015 in the 1-0 win over Togo in an international friendly played in Accra.

He managed just four caps.

Mensah had his talent honed at Ghanaian academy side Feyenoord Fetteh (now WAFA SC) and was sold to Portuguese side Vitoria de Guimaraes in 2012.

He first joined the youth side before making his senior debut with the reserves in the 2012–13 campaign where he scored nine goals and helped them to gain promotion to the Segunda Liga.

In the 2014/15 season, he was on the wish lists of elite clubs in Europe after scoring five goals in 30 appearances for Guimaraes.

According to reports he was being scouted by Manchester United Juventus and Valencia.

During the summer transfer window, Mensah made a big move to Spanish side Atletico Madrid on a six-year deal and was immediately loaned out to fellow La Liga side Getafe for the 2015-16 season.

Mensah spent the 2018/19 season at Kayserispor on loan from Atletico Madrid with an option to buy.

He played a total of 28 games and scored four goals. Kayserispor redeemed Mensah’s buying option in May 2019.

Kwame Poku’s brace saves Kotoko against Samartex FC in pre-season friendly

The Porcupine Warriors could not make it two wins in a row as they buckled up against Samatex in a friendly on Sunday

Asante Kotoko recorded a 2-2 stalemate in their last pre-season friendly against Division One side Samatex on Sunday in Samraboi.


After the 6-1 annihilation of Achiken FC in midweek, Maxwell Konadu’s charges failed to replicate that feat in the Western region.

Kwame Poku gave Kotoko the lead by the 18th minute after a quick counterattack football from the Porcupine Warriors but Samartex made it even four minutes later. The hosts’ striker Benjamin Yorke connected a pass from his teammate and fired past goalkeeper Kwame Baah.

Kotoko’s woes in the first half compounded on the 28th minute when Kwame Baah committed a penalty after he brought down a Samatex player. George Amonoo stepped up and sent the ball beyond the reach of Baah to put Samatex in front for the first time in the game.

After the break, Evans Adomako and Patrick Asmah came on for Augustine Okrah and Imoro Ibrahim respectively and that substitutions lifted Kotoko’s play in attack.

On the 58th minute, Kwame Poku calmly controlled a pass from a teammate and scored his second goal of the day to make it 2-2. The goal means that Poku has scored four goals within four days for Kotoko and six in all pre-season games.

Kwame Baah made a wonderful save by the 68th minute after coming one-on-one with a Samatex player to prevent Kotoko from recording their first defeat in pre-season.

They will open their Ghana Premier League campaign with a home game against Techiman Eleven Wonders before a trip to Golden City Park to face Berekum Chelsea.
