2020/21 GPL: Match Report: Asante Kotoko play out stalemate with Eleven Wonders

Asante Kotoko were held to a 1-1 draw by Techiman based Eleven Wonders in the Ghana Premier league second-round opener at the Nana Ameyaw Park in Techiman.

The Porcupine Warriors went ahead just 6 minutes after referee Rustum Senorgbe Ushered both sides into action through Brazilian Fabio Gama.

Coach Ignatius Osei Fosu’s side lifted their game afterwards to mount pressure on their guest with Samuel Boakye controlling affairs.

The Attacker made things hot for the Kotoko defenders who could not find answers to his several runs in their goal area until the 40th minute when Boakye jumped above them all to head home a sweet cross from Rashid Mohammed

With 3 former players Ashittey Ollenu, Amos Frimpong and Alex Asamoah all playing against them, Asante Kotoko held the forth to prevent the home side from causing havoc, as Coach Johnson Smith stood on the touchlines, while head coach Mariano Barreto looked on from the stands.

Kotoko coach Mariano Barreto names 18-man squad for Eleven Wonders Clash

Asante Kotoko head coach Mariano Barreto has announced his first 18-man squad for match-week 18 encounter against Eleven Wonders in Techiman.

The former Black Stars manager takes the Kotoko hot seat for the first time on Saturday for the visit to the Ohene Ameyaw Park, having been announced as Maxwell Konadu’s replacement on a week ago.

Young attacker Andy Kumi has been included in the team that will be travelling to Techiman as goalkeeper Felix Annan and striker Solomon Sarfo Taylor, Andrews Appau, Kwame Adom Frimpong and Evans Adomako failed to make a cut.

2020/21 GPL: Match Report: Great Olympics pip Medeama SC

Great Olympics started the second round of this season’s Ghana Premier League second round on a high note as they moved to the top of the table following a 1-0 win against Medeama at the Accra Sports Stadium on Easter Friday. 

Olympics won the tight encounter 1-0 courtesy of a first-half strike by Samuel Ashie-Quaye, with coach Annor Walker celebrating an important win over Yaw Preko, who was appointed as the capital-based club’s interim coach when Walker took a sick leave earlier this season.

Ashie-Quaye, a key member of Ghana’s U-20 squad that won the recent Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Mauritania, scored the winning goal in the 39th minute. The left-back pounced on a fine pass, outpaced his marker and beat goalkeeper Ofori Antwi with a low shot.

Medeama huffed and puffed but could not salvage anything from the game due to Olympics’ resolute defending.

Olympics, by virtue of the win, have overtaken Karela United at the top, however, the Aiyinase club have the chance to reclaim the position when they face AshantiGold at home on Sunday.

For Medeama, they can end matchday 18 outside the top four due to the defeat. They will hope to recover from the setback in their next game to remain in contention for the title.

Ghanaian winger Isaac Atanga signs for MLS side Cincinnati from Nordsjaelland

Ghanaian winger Isaac Atanga has signed a mouth-watering deal by joining MLS side FC Cincinnati from Danish top-flight side FC Nordsjælland.

The 20-year-old, who has excited football fans in the European country this season, signed the deal on Wednesday to move from the Danish Superliga club.

The move will quadruple the wages of the player and make him one of the highest earning young Ghanaian players any where in the world.

The talented player signed a three-year contract with an additional two option years which has delighted the American club.

“We have been working to add a winger that provides a different playing profile than the players that are currently on our roster,” FC Cincinnati General Manager Gerard Nijkamp said.

“Isaac is a player that attacks the opponent with pace and will create goal scoring opportunities by getting in behind the defense. We’re excited for Isaac to join our club and look forward to welcoming him to Cincinnati.”

Atanga will occupy an international roster spot and will be added to FC Cincinnati’s 2021 MLS roster upon the receipt of his P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate.

Atanga has made 19 appearances, including 10 starts, scoring five goals across all competitions in the current Danish Superliga season.

In his career, the winger has made 58 career appearances, scoring 12 goals and adding five assists, across all competitions in two professional seasons in Denmark with FC Nordsjælland.

The forward’s professional career began in 2019 when he made his first-team debut for Nordsjælland in the 2018-19 Danish Superliga Championship Round at just 18 years old.

He made two substitute appearances in both legs against Esbjerg fB.

In his first full season, Atanga registered 35 appearances, including 26 starts, scoring seven goals and adding five assists, across all competitions.

The winger got off to a hot start scoring a goal in each of Nordsjælland’s first three matches of the 2019-20 campaign.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA ) have announced that they have reversed the earlier decision taken on the return of fans at league venues ahead of the second round.

The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has suspended fan patronage at all football venues until further notice due to the rise of Coronavirus cases in the country.

The nation’s football governing EXCO members through the Association’s official portal revealed the directive on Wednesday, March 31, 2021.

This will give the FA enough time to put in place healthful measures to make the various stadia safe for fans and consumers of football in our bid to help the government in the fight against the pandemic.

Club licensing Board releases decision on Berekum Golden City Park and Nduom stadium

The Club Licensing Board at its sitting on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 considered the request of Berekum Arsenal and Berekum Chelsea for the re-reinstatement of their match venue licence for Berekum Golden City Park to host Division One and Premier League matches respectively.

The Board also considered the request by Elmina Sharks for the licence of Ndoum Stadium to be re-instated.

GOLDEN CITY PARK – BEREKUM

In respect of the Golden City Park, the Board observed that there has been a considerable improvement in the quality of the playing pitch and commended both Berekum Arsenal and Berekum Chelsea for the effort. The Board, however, observed that the pitch would require further constant watering, fertilization and rolling to allow the pitch to withstand the volume of activity expected on the pitch for both Division One and Premier League games henceforth. The Board also observed safety concerns relating to the construction of a stand for the water tank used to irrigate the pitch. The Board has therefore decided to schedule another inspection in two (2) weeks to make a final decision. In the meantime, no footballing activity (competitive, friendly or training) can take place at the venue.

NDUOM STADIUM – ELMINA

In respect of the Ndoum Park similar observations, as made in Berekum, were made in respect of the pitch, whilst safety concerns observed relates to insulation of electrical equipment used to support the irrigation of the pitch. The Board therefore decided that no football activity should take place at the venue whilst the club takes steps to constantly water, fertilize and firm up the pitch.  An inspection is scheduled in two weeks for a final decision to be made.

The Club Licensing Board is also reminding clubs which use the following venues, which were put on a watch list before the end of the first-round of the Premier League, to ensure that their facilities are properly maintained to desirable standards within the course of the 2nd Round:

  1. Nana Agyemang Badu Park – Dormaa
  2. Nana Ameyaw Park – Techiman
  3. Bechem Park – Bechem
  4. Accra Sports Stadium
  5. Dawu Park.

The Club Licensing Board shall commence spot-checks from the beginning of the 2nd round at these and other facilities to ensure compliance with club licensing standards.

Hasaacas Ladies to represent Ghana in Maiden CAF Women’s Champions league

Hasaacas Ladies FC have received the nod to represent Ghana in the maiden CAF Women’s Champions League.

The GFA settled on the Sekondi-based club after receiving a notification from the sub continental football governing body, the West African Football Union – B (WAFU B) on submission of name of the representing club by close of business, March 31, 2021.

Article 2 section 2.3 of the CAF Women’s Champions League 2021 Regulation permits the GFA Executive Council to decide on who represents Member Associations in the Champions League.

Hasaacas Ladies were champions of the GFA Normalization Special Competition, hence gaining the nod of the Association to play in the competition.

The club is expected to begin the campaign by participating in the qualifying phase, WAFU Regional championship coming up in June 2021 before progressing to the next stage.

The GFA has a deadline of Wednesday, March 31, 2021 to submit the name of Hasaacas Ladies FC to CAF for the maiden competition.

Wamanafo incident: GFA flies in referees for full medical care

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has flown into the capital, all four Referees who were assaulted during last Sunday’s Division One League game between Wamanafo Mighty Royals FC and Tano Bofoakwa FC.

Centre Referee Niatire Suntuo Aziz, Assistants Suleman Mohammed and Yakubu Abdul Rahman and Fourth Referee Hasim Yakubu who are based in Tamale and Kumasi respectively have arrived in Accra for extensive medical check-up and care.

This is in line with the GFA’s effort to ensure that the referees are given proper medical care following the incident.

In an earlier response to the incident, the GFA, through General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo, Esq. called the affected referees on phone to empathize with them while assuring them of full Medical support by the Association.

The General Secretary also assured other match officials of maximum protection at all times.

He further intimated that, an attack on match officials is indeed an attack on the entire sport of football and culprits shall be brought to book in strict compliance to the relevant regulations.

Following a Police Complaint lodged with the Berekum Police by the Referees, the Ghana Football Association would be working with the Ghana Police Service to ensure that the criminal justice system deals with the perpetrators of the assault.

CAF strongly condemns assault on referees in Ghana Division One League game

CAF has noted with shock the unacceptable news of the assault of match officials in Ghana during a First Division match between Might Royals and Tano Bofoakwa in Wamafo a few days ago.

CAF General Secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba strongly condemned the assault on the match officials and called for a full investigation on the matter.

“The image and integrity of football in Africa is very important. Part of this is the complete respect of match officials and the role they play in our football. It is important that match officials feel they are completely protected and are free to apply the FIFA Laws of the Game without fear or prejudice. The reports coming from Ghana where match official were assaulted are completely unacceptable. This behaviour has no place in our football and cannot be tolerated. CAF wishes the match officials a speedy recovery,” Mosengo-Omba said.

CAF is liaising with the Ghana Football Association to get a full report on what transpired on the way forward.

CAF is treating this matter with the seriousness and urgency it deserves.

CAF has appealed to all Member Associations to ensure that CAF Safety and Security Regulations are fully implemented in all matches.
