VIDEO: Kwame Opoku passes USM Alger medicals, set to be unveiled

Striker Kwame Ooku has passed his medical tests at Algerian giants, USM Alger a day after touching down in the country.

He is set to be unveiled on Tuesday following the successful mandatory medical examination.

The Ghana international will teaming up with his new teammates after the Reds and Blacks announced his signing on 15 March from Ghanaian top-flight side Asante Kotoko.

Opoku had a successful half-season stint with the Porcupine Warriors in his first year, scoring 9 goals in 16 matches.

Opoku will sign a four-and-a-half year contract in a deal reported to be around US$ 500,000.

He joined Kotoko from second-tier side Nkoranza Warriors before the commencement of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League.

The 21-year-old made his Black Stars debut in the 1-1 draw with South Africa in Johannesburg in a penultimate 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Berekum Chelsea head coach, Seth Hoffman was left fuming with his side after ”two gifts” saw them lose 2-0 to Asante Kotoko on Sunday.

Seth Hoffman’s side failed to make it two wins in a row after last week’s 2-1 victory over Legon Cities as Kotoko beat them at the Len Clay Stadium.

Chelsea in the first round held the Porcupines to a 1-1 draw at the Berekum Golden City Park after Emmanuel Clottey’s last-minute kick cancelled out Kwame Opoku’s opener.

However, in the reverse fixture on Sunday, Kotoko scored two goals courtesy Andy Kumi and Godfred Asiamah in either half to condemn Berekum Chelsea to defeat on matchday 19 of the Ghana Premier League.

Speaking after the game, the former Hearts of Oak coach, Hoffman said Chelsea made it too easy for the Porcupines. He believed his team at a point deserved an equalizer.

“It was a great game and tactically we started well, we got chances but we didn’t utilize them and they caught us by surprise by taking the lead. We did our best to level the score but unfortunately, we missed a crucial chance through the penalty spot.

“My boys lost a bit of concentration … I congratulate Kotoko but we gave them the goals” he said.

Meanwhile, the Porcupine Warriors are now the league leaders with 34 points after the win over Berekum Chelsea.

Uganda goalkeeper Denis Onyango retires from international football

Uganda captain Denis Onyango has announced his retirement from international football with immediate effect.

The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper confirmed on Monday evening.

Following the failure of The Cranes not qualifying for the upcoming 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after being kicked out by Malawi on the final day of qualification, Onyango has now decided to hang up his gloves.

The 35-year-old, considered as one of the best players to have played for the national team aided Uganda to qualify for the Afcon 2019.

Onyango issued his immediate retirement to the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) today which was accepted before he confirmed the news via social media.”It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my retirement from international football,” the Mamelodi Sundowns keeper said.

“After much consideration, my family, managers and I, decided it was in my best interest to hang my gloves on my beloved Cranes. Big thanks to every Ugandan over the years.”

Onyango amassed 80 caps for the East African nation since making his senior international debut against Cape Verde in June 2005.

Ghana International Frank Acheampong seals Shenzhen FC deal

Ghanaian winger Frank Acheampong has completed a bumper move to ambitious Chinese Super League side Shenzhen FC on a free transfer.

The 27-year joins on a four-year deal after leaving Tianjin Teda.

Acheampong will reunite with his international teammate Mubarak Wakaso – who has also joined the side.

The Ghana star spent three years at Tianin Teda where he impressed heavily, scoring 34 goals on 86 appearances.

He joined Tianjin on loan in 2017 from Belgian club Anderlecht before making the deal permanent later on.

The Ghana international played a huge role, scoring 17 goals in 26 appearances in all competition as Teda escaped relegation on the final day of the season in his first season

Ghanaian midfielder Mubarak Wakaso joins Chinese side Shenzhen FC

Ghanaian international Mubarak Wakaso has joined Chinese Super League outfit Shenzhen FC.

The 30-year old midfielder has joined the Shenzhen based club after a successful negotiations.

Details of the contract is not yet known but the former Deportivo Alaves midfielder has been announced by Shenzhen FC as their newest signing.

He has joined Shenzhen FC after leaving Jiangsu Sunning..

Wakaso joined Jiangsu Sunning in 2020 after leaving Spanish Laliga outfit Deportivo Alaves with 66 appearances for the club in his three years stay.

Mubarak Wakaso has formerly played for clubs like AshantiGold, Elche, Villarreal, Rubin Kazan, Espanyol, Celtic, Panathinaikos, Granada, Deportivo Alaves and Jiangsu Sunning.

He has capped 58 times for Ghana senior national team, Black Stars, scoring 12 goals since his debut in 2012.

Kotoko coach Mariano Barreto calls on Ghanaian Referees to protect skilful players on the field

Head coach of Asante Kotoko Mariano Barreto believes there is a need for referees to protect skilful players in the Ghana premier league. He reckons Ghana has players and they ought to be protected.

Asante Kotoko engaged Berekum Chelsea in week 19 Premier League action at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium. The Reds enjoyed most part for the game and sealed their heroic performance with two goals.

Sharing his observations of the game with the media, Asante Kotoko head coach Mariano Barreto states, there are skilful players abound in the league and those players deserve maximum protection from referees.

“The work of the referee is not only whistle, but he also has to protect the players. I have a national team player injury now and I don’t know how long, because there are some kind of foul that is not possible in Ghana, Burkina Faso, New Zealand or Australia. He has to protect the players because Ghana has skilful players and the referee has to protect skilful players.”

Even though Asante Kotoko saw off Berekum Chelsea, the former Black Stars coach admits his team commits too much mistake.

“We make too many mistakes and almost we are giving one ball and they could make a goal, but it is not because they create, we give the ball. We make a bad pass down and they failed to score.”

Asante Kotoko now sits top of the Ghana Premier League table with 34 points after 19 outings.

Starman Fabio Gama to miss Asante Kotoko next league game against Great Olympics

In-form Asante Kotoko attacking midfielder Fabio Gama Dos Santos will not be part of the team when they trek to battle Great Olympics in their Premier League game scheduled for Friday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

This is as a result of accumulated yellow cards he had in matches against Aduana Stars, Hearts of Oak and Berekum Chelsea in the ongoing Ghana Premier League.

This is in line with Article 28(1)(e) of the GFA Premier League Regulations (2019) which states that “An unqualified player is a player who has received a caution in three league matches’’.

The prodigy has been instrumental in attack for Mariano Barreto’s team since the start of the second round 2020/2021 Ghana premier league.

He has scored two goals and three assists in fourteen games for Asante Kotoko so far this season.

Head coach of Hearts Of Oak, Samuel Boadu says he was ‘shocked by the penalty that was awarded against his side in the defeat to AshantiGold on Saturday afternoon.

The Phobians suffered a slender 1-0 loss to the Miners in their match-day 19 Ghana Premier League game at the Len Clay Stadium.

Hearts were presented with an opportunity to take the lead through a penalty but Victor Aidoo’s spot-kick was saved by goalkeeper Kofi Mensah.

The Miners secured all three points in the 92nd minute when Amos Addai converted a penalty, beating Benjamin Mensah in posts for the visitors.

Hearts Of Oak defender Fatawu Mohammed was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area and referee Gabriel Opoku Arhin whistled for the penalty.

But Boadu who was seeking to win his third consecutive game since he took over the capital-based coaching job said he does not know why the referee took that decision.

“Football sometimes is unpredictable, why the referee took that decision l can never tell but we can all see what happened, ” Boadu said in the post-match interview.

“I have no comment about them. I am concentrating on my next match which is against Inter Allies, ” he added.

Hearts Of Oak drops to the 5th position after match-day 19 with 30 points, 4 less than leaders Asante Kotoko.

Legon Cities gaffer, Bashir Hayford has lavished praises on his players following the 2-0 win over city-rivals Great Olympics in their match-day 19 Ghana Premier League game on Sunday.

Two second-half goals by Nicholas Menssh and Jonah Attuquaye ensured that the quest of the Royals to beat the drop at the end of the season is on course.

Speaking after the game elated Bashir Hayford indicated that his charges were hungry for success on the afternoon.

“Fantastic victory for the team today. We showed hunger and determination to win. I am so happy for the boys. We need to keep up the momentum and grab few wins then hopefully climb up the table. Attention turns to the next game right away, ” Bashir Hayford told the press.

Legon Cities remain at 5th position with 22 points after 19 games .
