Ghana coach Akonnor impressed with Black Stars performance against Morocco

Black Stars coach, Charles Kwabla Akonnor, has indicated that he is satisfied with his team’s performance against Morocco despite losing 0-1 to the Atlas Lions in an international friendly in Rabat on Tuesday evening.

Goalkeeper Razak Abalora’s horrible howler in the 68th minute gifted the hosts a narrow victory in Rabat.

Akonnor’s charges are expected to make amends when they host neighbours Cote d’Ivoire at the Cape Coast Stadium on Saturday, June 12, 2021.

According to the former Kotoko coach, his side played collectively last Tuesday and he is hoping the team to repeat the same against the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire.

“The team played well and I am very happy about our performance today,” said Coach Akonnor after the match.

“I’m, however, not happy about our loss because we deserved something from the match.

“But this is football and things like these sometimes happen. So most importantly, I have to praise the team for their performance against one of the best teams on the continent,” he added.

The Black Stars played without influential players such as Thomas Partey and Mubarak Wakaso, but Coach Akonnor expects a full house in the Cote d’Ivoire encounter.

When asked what the return of these big names meant to his team on Saturday, Coach Akonnor explained that the duo’s arrival would help stabilise the side.

He explained that having all the experienced players in the team would provide him the opportunity to prepare well towards the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) early next year.

“With the way they played against Morocco, I expect the same momentum when two of our experienced players return ahead of the Cote d’Ivoire match.

“Thomas Partey and Mubarak Wakaso, together with Andre and Jordan, bring a lot to the team and seeing them play together help us a lot,” Coach Akonnor noted.

Black Stars head coach, CK Akonnor has offered his support to goalkeeper Razak Abalora after Abalora’s mistake cost Ghana a defeat in an international friendly in Rabat on Tuesday evening against Morocco.

The Asante Kotoko SC shot-stopper has been hugely criticised by a section of the Ghanaian media and supporters.

Abalora replaced Black Stars first choice, Richard Ofori in the clash against Morocco in Rabat, but unfortunately, he committed a terrible error that gifted the Atlas Lions a 1-0 win over the Black Stars.

A cross sent in was poorly dealt with by Abalora which allowed Jawad El Yamiq to head home for the only goal on the night.

But speaking after the game, Akonnor insisted that Abalora is a good goalkeeper and therefore people should measure their criticism.

He called on Ghanaians to encourage him to become a better goalkeeper.

“He made a mistake. He knows that himself but we are not in a position to kill him. We have to move on, we have to encourage him…He’s a good goalkeeper and there’s no doubt about that but we will not kill him. We have to encourage him to come good ”

Ghana will take on Ivory Coast in the second friendly encounter on Saturday, June 12, 2021, at the Cape Coast Stadium.

Kotoko goalie Kwame Baah backs teammate Razak Abalora after howler against Morocco

Goalkeeper Kwame Baah has offered his support to club teammate, Razak Abalora after the latter’s mistake cost Ghana a defeat in an international friendly in Rabat on Tuesday evening against Morocco.

The Asante Kotoko SC shot-stopper has backed his colleague following a huge backlash from a section of the Ghanaian media and supporters as.

According to Baah, mistakes are part of the game of football and should be pardoned by Ghanaians.

“Mistakes has always been part of the game, Just that sometimes we as keepers ours becomes visible because we are basically the last men standing and that shows the weight of responsibility we hold, the best part is we learn and bounce back harder”, he wrote on social media. 

Abalora made one error in the Ghana-Morocco game which was the cause of the team’s defeat.

He committed an error that resulted in a goal for Sao Tome and Principe during the Afcon qualifiers in Ghana.

Hearts of Oak file protest against city rivals Great Olympics over unqualified player

Hearts of Oak have filed a protest against regional rivals Great Olympics for fielding an unqualified Joshua Rhule in the Ghana Premier League clash on Sunday.

The two clubs locked horns in the Mantse derby at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday evening with the game ending in a 1-1 draw.

Emmanuel Nettey shot the Phobians into the lead before Maxwell Abbey-Quaye equalised for the Dade Boys.

However, Hearts claim the Dade boys’ left-back, Joshua Rhule was unqualified to feature in the match week 28 ties.

In 2019, the said player with the name Koomson Biney played for Dragon FC in Benin and moved to join Great Olympics in the second round of the Ghana Premier League.

Information gathered indicates that the 18-year-old then changed his name from Koomson Biney to Joshua Rhule so that he can be registered on the Transfer Matching System (TMS) to play for Great Olympics.

This means Rhule was registered without an International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

By the FA’s regulations, Great Olympics are to be notified in writing of Hearts’ protest following which the Dade Boys are to respond not later than three days after receipt of the notification.

If the protest succeeds, the offending team (Great Olympics) shall be considered as having lost the match and accordingly, three (3) points and three (3) goals shall be awarded in favour of Accra Hearts of Oak.

INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY: Morocco 1-0 Ghana – The Atlas Lions Wins 1-0 Over the Black Stars in Rabat

The Atlas Lions beat the Black Stars by 1-0 narrow margin at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat in an international friendly encounter this evening.

The Morocco Senior National team has emerged victorious after 1-0 win over Ghana’s Senior national team at the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium in Rabat this evening in the ongoing International Friendlies.

The two teams were poised for actions just the moment the center referee whistled for the game to begin.

The Atlas Lions dominated the first 20 minutes of the game, possessing and attacking to get an early goal, but the defensive set up of Andy Yiadom, Gideon Mensah, Daniel Amartey and Nicolas Opoku prevented any ball from reaching the back of the net.

The Black Stars had one advantage on the 16th minute on the break after Yiadom ran passed his foes to locate Jordan Ayew however, Jordan’s shot was blocked by his marker. Resultant corner went wasteful.

On the 19th minute, the Moroccans went attacking, after Goalkeeper Razak Abalora gave an opponent pass which saw Yiadom to be dispossessed after Baba Iddrissu intercepted from the initial opponent pass and won the ball for Yiadom, but Ghana were lucky Morocco’s attack went wasteful.

Skipper Romain Saiss came close to give Morocco the lead from a corner kick after the defender headed the ball which beat Goalkeeper Abalora unfortunately, ball missed the goalpost by inches on the 21st minute.

As the two teams didn’t allow any ball to enter their goalpost, the game subsequently went to the break.

Ghana came quickly on the 55th minute on a three-against-three situation through Samuel Owusu who located Jordan, Jordan took the ball to his marker, dummied the marker, fired to the goalpost however, Goalkeeper Bono saved the ball to the corner kick.

Goalkeeper Abalora had to save his side from Munir El Hadadi free kick on the 58th minute before the hosts took the lead on the 69th minute.

Midfielder Hackim Ziyech effected a free kick half way into Ghana’s half, Goalkeeper Abalora who tried to punch the ball missed the ball, and in the pool of players, Jawad El Yamiq headed home for the Atlas Lions.

On the 70th minute, the Black Stars came close as Mohammed Kudus fired a thunderbolt unfortunately goalkeeper Bono saved the ball from kissing the net.

Skipper André Ayew was substituted into the game to help Ghana get the equaliser however  Morocco managed the scoreline until the referee blew his final whistle.

The end results see Ghana loosing 1-0 to Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah in Rabat.

The Black Stars will travel to Ghana to play Ivory Coast on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at the Cale Coast stadium.

Pupuni takes lead in Asuogyaman Boys U-19 T20 Cricket League

Pupuni Community Cricket Club have their noses in front as the Asuogyaman Boys U-19 T20 Community Cricket League entered its week 2 matches on Saturday, June 5, 2021.

Pupuni, having beaten Senchi Master Batters by 7 runs in the first week, saw off Senchi Royal Batters by 8 wickets in the second game played at the Akosombo Presby Park in Zone 2.

Senchi Royal Batters scored 40 runs, all out in 9.3 overs after Pupuni won toss and elected to field first.

In the bowling figures, John Kwao, took 2 wickets, gave away 6 runs in 2 overs while Francis Kojo took 1 wicket, gave away 1 run in an over, with the rest of the wickets being Catches.

Michael Pobi of Senchi Royal Batters scored 10 runs, off 7 balls, and Kelvin Selase scored 7 runs, off 11 balls.
Pupuni ended the game early, scoring 45 runs, for 2 wickets in 7.2 overs.

Pupuni Head Coach, Belinda Asante was optimistic they will qualify for the Semifinals.

“We had a good game and our plan worked for us. It feels good when your players listen to your shouts at the edge of the Oval. We are happy to be on top of the table and we are very certain we will qualify for the semifinals. We have 3 more matches to play and we will keep training to improve on our performances.”

The first match of the day however saw Mangoase Hydro lose the bragging rights to their neighbours Abuakwa Super Kings.

Mangoase Hydro won the toss and wanted to chase and so elected to field first. Abuakwa Super Kings scored 56 runs, all out in 12.3 overs in the first innings.

Prince Homeku one of the life lines of Abuakwa Super Kings, scored 15runs, off 9 balls while 13 runs, off 15 balls.

All hopes were dashed for Mangoase Hydro in the second innings, as they could only manage 18 runs, all out in 13.3 overs.

Pupuni Community Cricket Club sit at the summit of Zone 2 with 4 points whereas Abuakwa Super Kings follows with 2 points after a match. Tortibo, who made headlines in week 1 lie 3rd also with 2 points after a match.

Senchi Royals, Senchi Master Batters and Mangoase Hydro follow in that order with no points.

Sadly, all players wore black armbands to mourn with the family of 17-year-old Francisca Kudavor whose funeral was ongoing at Akosombo-Abume. Francisca was part of the Girls U-17 League which ended in April this year and she played for Mangoase Hydro.

The Ghana Cricket Association, together with the Eastern Region Cricket Association donated an amount of cash to the bereaved family.

The League heads into another exciting fixture come Saturday, June 12, 2021.

BGC’s triumph over Salt n Pepper in the ‘President’s Invitational T20 League’, became the highlight of week 2, in the 4 matches played at the Achimota Cricket ovals on Sunday, June 6, 2021.

Organized by the Ghana Cricket Association (GCA), the 2021 edition of the single round-robin league saw BGC score 156/7 in the 1st innings on Oval A.

Salt n Pepper’s 2nd innings looked so possible for a win after the 10th over, as they kept getting more than 6 runs per over.

They had scored 106/3 in the 14th over, and 130/5 in the 17th over, with much effort from Kofi Bagabena, who recorded 5 boundaries 4’s.

Bagabena’s game was wrapped up with a score of 47/37, after his attempt for another boundary was caught by Karan Singh Bhatia, on the 20th over, a ball bowled by Hassan Ali Shah which could’ve given Salt n Pepper that famous victory.

It was all joy for BGC, as they managed to restrict Salt n Pepper to 154/7, thereby winning by 2 runs.

BGC’s Devender Signh Malik was adjudged Man of the Match with his impressive 60/38 balls (which included 2 4’s and 6 6’s), having spent 58 minutes in the game, with a striking rate of 157.89. He also took 2/36 in 4 overs with an economy rate of 9.00.

Also, in the morning and on Oval B, Ras Bingi Cricket Club couldn’t stand the prowers of CSK Cricket Club. CSK scored 221/6 in the first innings and won by 179 runs, as Ras Bingi could only manage 42/10 in 12.4 overs.

Sam Michael Merbin of CSK, was adjudged player of the Match. He scored 62 runs off 28 balls, with 7 4’s and 3 6’s and a striking rate of 221.43. He also took 1 wicket, gave away 7 runs in 4 overs, with 2 maidens and an economy rate of 1.75.

The afternoon matches also saw Supreme CC taking the lead on Oval B with 124/6 and winning by 32 runs after Karizma had scored 92/10 in 17.1 over. James Vifah won the Man of the Match Accolade with a score of 46/40. He took 4/20 in 4 overs as well.

Supreme CC are joint leaders with BGC with 4 points but with an NRR of 1.054 for the former, as both won their first week matches.

Defenders Cricket Club were 5 runs victors over MMG in the last match of the day, with 104/10 in 17.4 overs and 99/10 in 18.2 overs respectively.

Aziz Sualley won the Man of the Match, having taken 4 wickets, given away 26 balls in 4 overs. He also scored 18 runs, off 15 balls.

Week 3 matches come up on Sunday, June 13 at the Achimota Ovals in Accra.

International friendly – Akonnor names Black Stars starting line-up for Morocco clash

Our Coach Charles Akonnor has named Daniel Amartey in the starting line-up for Tuesday evening’s International friendly against Morocco. The Leicester City player brings to an end – a four year absence from International football due to an ankle injury.

He returns to the team after ending the season on a high as he played a key role in Leicester city’s English FA Cup winning feat – Amartey will partner Nicholas Opoku in central defence.

Also in the line-up is Russia based Joel Fameyeh. The former Asokwa Deportivo man will operate from the wings with Samuel Owusu. Ajax star Kudus Mohammed will play behind Jordan Ayew while Baba Idrissu and Emmanuel Lomotey sit in front of the back four.

Ghana will play the Atlas Lions of Morocco at the FAR Sportive stadium.

The two teams will use the game to prepare for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers that is set to take off in September.

The match is scheduled for 7pm kick off in Rabat, Morocco.
