Medeama remain in contention for a trophy this season after advancing to the last eight of the MTN FA Cup. 

The Mauves and Yellows, who have won the competition twice in the last five editions, edged out fellow Ghana Premier League side Great Olympics in the round of 16 on Wednesday.

They won 5-3 on penalties with Prince Opoku Agyemang scoring the winning penalty at the Akoon Park.

Both teams failed to find a way past each other in regulation time. Thus, the winner had to be decided on penalties.

They both scored their first three penalties, but when Medeama scored their fourth, Olympics fumbled.

It presented Agyemang with the opportunity to win it for Medeama and made absolutely no mistake.

Medeama, who came into the season targeting league title, would be delighted to win the cup competition as it guarantees them Africa football next season.

They won the competition for the first time in 2013 and two years later beat the same opponent, Kotoko for their second.

AshantiGold avoided a second straight defeat to Aduana Stars as they beat the Fire boys to advance to the last eight of this year’s MTN FA Cup.

The Miners who have been struggling in the season are through to the 2020/21 MTN FA Cup quarter-finals at the expense of Aduana Stars following a thrilling clash in Dormaa on Wednesday afternoon.

The Obuasi-based club won 4-2 to join big boys Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko and Medeama in the last eight of the competition.

Ashgold took the lead through youngster Gordon Brokelyn after just seven minutes before two quick goals from Mark Agyekum and David Abagna minutes after the halftime break.

Aduana pulled one back but Agyekum got his brace to extend the lead before the final goal of the game was scored by Emmanuel Baffour for the home side through the spot.

The result puts Ashgold in the next round of the MTN FA Cup while Aduana Stars would have to channel their energy in the last two games of the Ghana Premier League to try and secure a top-four place.

With the Ghana Premier League title within their reach, the Phobians are focused on achieving the double by winning the cup competition.

Accra Young Wise had an explosive start in the contest and they nearly snatched the lead early in the game but Ben Mensah quickly interfered to guide the ball to goal kick.

But Hearts quickly responded creating some decent chances but they failed to open the scoring.

On the 65th minute, Hearts of Oak were awarded a penalty after goalkeeper Bright Annor brought down Daniel Afriyie in the box.

Barnieh elected himself for the kick and nicely converted calmly to put his side in front.

The Phobians hold on tightly for the victory which sees them join Asante Kotoko in the last eight.
