Asante Kotoko head coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum, has named a strong squad for their first Ghana Premier League second round fixture against visiting Dreams FC on Sunday afternoon.

The Porcupines will be hoping to return to winning ways after drawing goalless with rivals Hearts of Oak in the week 7 away game last weekend in Accra. 

Fabio Gama has returned to the squad after a long absence due to an injury he sustained. Andrews Appau is also back in the squad for tomorrow’s showdown at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. Youngsters

Isaac Oppong, Patrick Asmah and Stephen Amankona are reported to have had some knocks at training and are likely to be out of the game, although they are part of the players in camp.

The Phobians have now failed to pick a win after four games in Ghana Premier League after Legon Cities broke their hearts late on Saturday

Hearts of Oak shared the spoils 1-1 with city rivals Legon Cities as their ambition to kick start the second round of Ghana Premier League on a good note hit a snag.

Isaac Mensah scored in the first half for the Phobians with the Royals equalising in injury time through youngster Osman Amadu.

Hearts of Oak shared the spoils 1-1 with city rivals Legon Cities as their ambition to kick start the second round of Ghana Premier League on a good note hit a snag.

After losing to Great Olympics and sharing the spoils goalless against RTU and Asante Kotoko, Hearts were in dire need of a win and although Sulley Muntari proved why he is regarded as one of the reasons the Phobians may have an improved performance in the second half of the season, a late equaliser dashed their hopes.

The 37-year-old was handed his third start in a row and despite initially struggling to deal with the poor nature of the pitch, he was able to stamp his authority in midfield later.

After a slow start to the game, Hearts had their noses in front thanks to Muntari’s decisive assist to Isaac Mensah by the 16th minute.

The former Inter Milan and AC Milan midfielder sent in a tailor-measured cross from a corner kick which was met by Mensah by the eleventh minute.

However, Legon Cities left it late and pulled even late in additional time. A terrible mistake by Dennis Korsah who joined Hearts from Ebusua Dwarfs last month gave Osman Amadu the chance to score the equalizer.

Although, Hearts pressed harder and pushed everyone forward for a late winner, they could not break down the resilient defence of Legon again.

Hearts, before the game, were trailing Asante Kotoko by twelve points which has now been reduced to eleven. However, Kotoko can extend it too fourteen points on Sunday if they are able to defeat Dreams FC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Fabio Gama says his Asante Kotoko teammates must focus on doing their job in the Ghana Premier League title race after ending the first round with a 7-point lead.

The Porcupines sit on top of the league table with 37 points after first round of the campaign, winning 11 games, drawing four and lose just two games amassing 37 points in the process.

Gama, whose season has been plagued by injuries in an interview with eTV Ghana expressed optimism about his side’s chances of winning the 2021/22 league title.

Regardless of the Porcupines run of fine form, the 29-year-old demands more from his colleagues as he urged his side to maintain focus and improve on their previous matches.

“We have a long way to go but we are on the right track. Our performance was good but we need to keep it high”

“We are winning this season’s title and I hope we do. We’ve have done a great job in the first round. We just need to be focused, determined and keep the work up then at the end we will lift the trophy,” he said.

Kotoko resumes their second round on Sunday February 26, as they welcome Dreams FC to the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

Meanwhile, Fabio Gama who missed most matches in the first round is in contention to make the squad for this weeked’s game against Dreams FC.

WAFA’s troubles this season seem unending as they pipped 2-1 at home by King Faisal on matchday eighteen of Ghana Premier League at the Academy Park in Sogakope on Friday.

With the host coming into the game sitting 16th on the log with 18 points and fighting to avoid relegation after the first round of the season, a win was something they were looking for in earnest. However, things didn’t go as planned.

Faisal were the first to trouble their hosts as a quick counterattack almost resulted into a goal in the opening ten minutes.

After an end to end action in midfield, the two sides went into the break level pegging since chances were at the premium.

After the break, Faisal continued from where they left and pressed harder for the opener. Osman Ibrahim shot Faisal up in the game on 49th minute with a cool finish.

The Kotoko loanee latched on to a pass from Mawuli Wayo and sent in a low drive which was saved but he was at hand to tap in the rebound to fetch his sixth goal of the season.

WAFA nearly found the equaliser a minute later after Agyemang capitalised on a poor defending by Pius Baffour but his last ditch effort went wide.

However, WAFA were fortunate on 66th minute as skipper Konadu Yiadom got them the equaliser through a corner kick. The lanky centre back was left free in King Faisal’s box and although, goalkeeper Frank Boateng saved his initial header, Yaidom tapped in the rebound to silence the few away supporters present.

With four minutes remaining, Wayo capitalised on a poor defending and sent Faisal ahead and his goal went on to win the day for the visitors.

Faisal, after the victory, have moved three places up to third on the log with 29 points, eight points behind city rivals Asante Kotoko who are leading the pack.

Legon Cities have announced the signing of Patrick Yeboah, Youssifou Atte and Basit Anwar.

The trio join the Royals until the end of the season after successful negotiations and passing mandatory medicals.

Patrick Yeboah, 27, joins on a free transfer. The left-back who has previously played for Asante Kotoko, Karela United and Medeama is expected to bring his rich experience to the team.

Youssifou Atte, 25, also joins on free transfer following the expiration of his contract with WAFA last year. The Togolese international plays as a right back but can also be deployed as a left back.

Basit Anwar on the other hand joins from Hearts of Oak. The youngster mainly enjoys playing as an attacking midfielder but can be deployed in a variety of attacking positions.

The trio are expected to add quality and depth
to the Legon Cities squad that struggled in large parts of the first round of the ongoing season.

Legon Cities currently sit in 12th place on the league table with 21 points after 17 games. The Royals will commence the second round of the season with a home game against holders Hearts of Oak and the newly signed trio will be available for selection.
