Black Satellites depart Ghana for Niger with 20 players for WAFU Cup

Head Coach of the Black Satellites (Male U-20), Karim Zito has named a 20-man squad to represent Ghana at the 2022 WAFU Zone B Cup of Nations to be played in Niamey, Niger.

The team departed Ghana earlier today for the competition which serves as qualifiers for the U-20 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In the squad are Premier League players; Gregory Sekyre (Berekum Chelsea), Nana Yeboah (Hearts of Oak), Vincent Anane (Legon Cities), Augustine Agyapong (Asante Kotoko), Collins Boah (Dreams FC), Kwabena Gogoe (Dreams), Zubeiru Ibrahim (King Faisal), Jonas Adjeitey (Berekum Chelsea), Emmanuel Annor (Bechem United).

Heart of Lions players Mustapha Yakubu and Razak Abdallah also made the squad. There’s also a place in the squad for Division One Zone One top scorer Mohammed Yahaya (Tamale City).

The Black Satellites had been in preparation for the WAFU for months in Prampram and were involved in high profile friendly games, beating Golden Kick 4-1, Tema Youth 2-1, Euro Africa 1-0 and Heart of Lions 2-0.

Satellites will go into the competition as defending champions having come from behind to beat Burkina Faso 2-1 at the Stade Charles De Gaulles in Porto Novo, Benin two years ago.

Ghana have been pitted in Group B and will open their campaign against Nigeria on Sunday, May 8, before playing Burkina Faso in the final group game on Saturday, May 14. Both games will be played at the Stade Général Seyni Kountché.

Host nation Niger were drawn in Group A with Togo, Cote D’ivoire and Benin.

The biennial tournament which serves as
qualifiers for the U-20 AFCON will be held in Niamey, Niger from Saturday, May 7 to Friday, May 20, 2022. 

The finalists will secure a place at the U-20 AFCON to be played in Egypt between 18 February to 12 March.

Ashantigold ready to cash in on red-hot Yaw Annor

The Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Premier League side AshantiGold SC says the club is ready to sell inform striker Yaw Annor but only for the right price.

Yaw Annor is the club’s top scorer at the moment with 16 goals in the Ghana Premier League.

Speaking in an interview, the Ashantigold SC CEO disclosed that the club is ready to do business with any club that has the right offer for their star player.

“We are ready to sell Yaw Annor and any other Player at a good price”, he told Akoma FM.

“I will be happy if my players get to play for Real Madrid or Chelsea and later Commend us for giving them the platform.

I’m in talks with couple of people (teams) so if they come and the numbers (money) are good we are ready to sell some players. If only the cash is really going to help the team”, he added.

Annor is currently two goals behind Asante Kotoko’s Franck Mbella with 18 goals as he scored four goals against Berekum Chelsea over the Weekend.

FIFA bans Agent of Latif Blessing and Ebenezer Ofori

Patrick Mork, the Intermediary of Ghanaian players Latif Blessing, Ebenezer Ofori and Kwame Kizito has been handed a one-year ban by FIFA that runs from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023.

FIFA made the decision following Mork’s breach of transfer rules involving the move of Nigerian winger Akinkunmi Amoo from Lagos based Sidos FC to Swedish club Hammarby IF.

Prior to the FIFA ban, Mork was handed a similar one-year ban by the Swedish Football Federation in March, 2022. However, the FIFA suspension means he can no longer register as an Intermediary in any part of the world to represent players or clubs in connection with negotiations.

Though some feel the suspension is a major blow to his career, Mork considers the ban as a joke. He believes the ban will not affect his business as his colleagues will perform the work that he cannot do during the period of the suspension of his license.

Mork has established himself as one of Sweden’s most established Intermediaries, with over 100 players signed up as clients of his Agency, Global Soccer Management.

Borussia Dortmund gives Otto Addo permission to coach Ghana at the World Cup

Otto Addo will coach Ghana at the 2022 World Cup. The talented coach of Borussia Dortmund made the announcement.

After helping the Black Stars qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup by defeating Nigeria in the final play-off round in March, Addo emerged as a favorite to take over as coach of the team.

He was named as a stop-gap coach, with Aston Villa U-19 coach George Boateng and Nordsjaelland’s Mas-ud Didi Dramani as his assistant coaches.

“We have now fortunately discussed it to the end. I have been given permission by Dortmund,” the 46-year-old revealed in a podcast of the “Hamburger Abendblatt”, confirming that he will coach Ghana at the World Cup in Qatar (21 November to 18 December).

Addo explained that BVB manager Sebastian Kehl did not want to spoil his dream of the World Cup – and that there was even the possibility that he could also “do the internationals in June and September under certain conditions”. However, he would “definitely” coach the team at the World Cup.

As a player, Addo played a total of 15 international matches for Ghana between 1999 and 2006 and most recently also served as co-coach for the West Africans. However, he did not play in the Africa Cup in January, where the “Black Stars” failed in the preliminary round for the first time since 2006 – BVB had not called him up for the tournament.

At the beginning of February, the Westphalians gave their okay for the Hamburg-born coach to take over as national coach on an interim basis.

Shortly afterwards, the 46-year-old led Ghana to the World Cup finals in the play-off duels against Nigeria and can now look forward to duels with Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.

CAF approves Cape Coast for 2023 AFCON qualifiers

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approved the Cape Coast Stadium to host the Black Stars’ 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, which kicks off in June, 2022, according to a report by Accra based Citi FM.

The 15,000-seater capacity stadium was considered by CAF after the GFA had submitted the facility before the deadline of April 25, as a replacement for the earlier rejected Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

The Black Stars will begin its chase for a 24th AFCON appearance in Cote d’Ivoire 2023 with opening qualifier against Madagascar in Cape Coast on June 1 at 7pm local time.

After honouring an away encounter at the Central African Republic on June 5, the four-times African champions return to the Cape Coast Stadium in September to host Angola in another qualifier.

Ghana has been drawn in Group E of the AFCON 2023 qualifiers alongside Madagascar, Angola and Central African Republic (CAR).

Asante Kotoko midfielder Richmond Lamptey has returned to training at Adako Jachie after recovering from a knee injury, according to an update on the Porcupine Warriors official Twitter handle.

The 25-year-old could be available for the Ghana Premier League match-day 28 fixture against Aduana Stars in Kumasi on Sunday, once he is cleared by the medical team.

The ex-Inter Allies man has been out of action for a month due to the injury, which forced him to miss five league games against King Faisal, Hearts of Oak, RTU, Legon Cities and WAFA.

Lamptey played his last game for Kotoko in the 1-1 draw against Karela on March 31. He has made 18 appearances for Kotoko in the GPL this season, scoring 3 goals.

Liverpool survived a scare against Villarreal to move into the Champions League final – and keep their hopes of winning an unprecedented quadruple alive.

The Reds had comfortably won 2-0 in the first leg but that advantage was wiped out after only 41 minutes at a noisy and passionate El Madrigal as the Spanish side pushed for a huge upset.

Boulaye Dia scored Villarreal’s first after only three minutes, converting Etienne Capoue’s pass, before ex-Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin headed in a second from another Capoue cross as the Reds looked rattled.

Liverpool had to improve in the second half and Fabinho put them back in front on aggregate with a shot that went through the legs of Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli in the 62nd minute.

Luis Diaz, whose introduction at half time changed the game after he replaced Diogo Jota, restored Liverpool’s two-goal aggregate advantage with a header at the back post.

Sadio Mane secured Liverpool’s place in their third Champions League final in five seasons with a third goal after taking the ball around Rulli. Villarreal ended the game with 10 men with Capoue sent off late on for two bookable offences.

The Reds will play either Manchester City or Real Madrid at the Stade de France in Paris on Saturday, 25 May.

No English side has ever won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup all in the same season, with Liverpool aiming to create history.

Hearts Of Oak youngster Salim Adams joins FC Cincinnati

FC Cincinnati have announced the acquisition of young midfielder Salim Adams on a season-long loan from Ghanaian giants Hearts of Oak.

Adams will spend the entire 2022 season at the MLS club with an option to purchase pending league and federation approval, in addition to ITC and work authorization.

Adams will immediately join Cincinnati 2 as a part of the relationships forged between FC Cincinnati, TSG Hoffenheim in the German Bundesliga, and the Ghana Premier League champions Hearts of Oak.

Adams is the first player to arrive from the Phobian side as a part of the Common Value Club Alliance.

“I’m excited to welcome Salim to FC Cincinnati,” said Tyrone Marshall, Head Coach of FC Cincinnati 2. “He’s a promising midfielder who will be an excellent addition to our group and to the environment we’re trying to create.”

The 19-year-old from Ghana has scored three goals in his 23 appearances in defensive midfield for Hearts of Oak, including a man-of-the-match performance in the 2022 President’s Cup victory against Asante Kotoko.

He joined Ghanaian giants at the beginning of the 2021-22 campaign from second-tier side New Edubiase United FC after a stellar stint.

Aduana Stars’ Bright Adjei named 2021/22 GPL Player of the Month for February

Aduana Stars forward Bright Adjei has emerged the best player of the Ghana Premier League for the month of February following an impressive form.

Adjei will receive a 43 inch television set from Electroland Ghana Limited (NASCO) for winning the monthly gong.

The 27-year old striker was announced as winner of the award live on the Ghana FA weekly news broadcast programme.

Adjei scored a total of five goals out of four matches played and was also MVP on three occasions to win February award beating off competition from Asante Kotoko striker Franck Mbella Etouga and Bechem United youngster Emmanuel Annor.

Adjei started the new month with another goal when Aduana were held to a 1-1 draw by Medeama SC on Monday at the Nana Agyeman Badu I Park in Dormaa Ahenkro.

He has 13 goals and four assists in 23 appearances so far this campaign.

The result sees the former Ghana Premier League champions drop to 5th on the league table with seven matches left to play.

Aduana Stars will travel to Kumasi to take on league leaders Asante Kotoko on match week 28 at the Baba Yara stadium on Sunday.
