We can’t relax against Central African Republic – Otto Addo

Black Stars coach Otto Addo emphasized the need for focus and caution ahead of their crucial World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic (CAR).

After securing their first win in eight games against Mali, the team’s focus has shifted to their upcoming match against CAR on Monday evening at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Despite the unexpected victory over the Eagles on Thursday, which has raised fans’ hopes, CAR is considered a weaker opponent. However, Addo is not underestimating the challenge.

“One thing is for sure, it’s going to be a very difficult game. For everyone who thinks it’s going to be easy, we hope it goes like that, but it’s really a difficult game. We can’t relax now,” Addo told the media on Sunday evening.

The coach, grateful for the support from Kumasi fans, is calling for extra support in this crucial match.

“I was really overwhelmed the last time we came here. To be honest, I didn’t expect that, especially given our performance in Afcon, yet they cheered us on in numbers. That’s why I love Kumasi fans. I love coming here; we need their support from the start to the end of the game.”

Addo believes Ghana has the quality to face Mali. Ghana previously secured a 2-1 victory over the Wild Beasts to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, aiming to replicate that result on Monday.

Meanwhile, CAR is also optimistic, having secured their first win of the qualifying series against Chad a few days ago.

Madagascar currently leads Group I with six points, followed by Comoros and Ghana, who are tied with the same points. A win for Ghana will see them move to the top of the group for the first time as they pursue their fifth World Cup appearance.

2026 World Cup Qualifier: Jordan Ayew strikes late to give Ghana victory over Mali in Bamako [+VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS]

Jordan Ayew came off the bench to score a dramatic winner for Ghana as they beat Mali in Bamako on Thursday evening.

The Black Stars recorded a 1-2 win over the Eagles to move joint-top of Group I of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers as they earned their first win in six games.

Ernest Nuamah scored for Ghana after the break to make it 1-1 before Jordan netted the winner late in added time.

Mali started the game on the strong foot chasing an early goal but Lawrence Ati-Zigi pulled off brilliant saves to deny the Eagles.

The goalkeeper first came up big in the fifth minute of the game after a left-footed shot from a Malian attacker before pushing away an effort from a corner.

Ghana’s first shot in the game came in the 16th minute but Mohammed Kudus’ strike went over the crossbar.

Ghana grew into the game from there and had a couple of chances but Kudus, for the second time, shot wide before Antoine Semenyo’s shot across goal beat everyone.

Just when the game seemed to be heading for a draw at the break, Mali found the opener.

Kamory Doubia made contact with the ball after it deflected off Alexander Djiku from his earlier strike to give Mali the lead in added minutes.

The game went into break with the Eagles in the lead.

The Black Stars almost got an equaliser just after the recess but Antoine Semenyo couldn’t get enough of Tariq Lamptey’s low cross.

However, there was no denying Ernest Nuamah in the 58th minute.

The Olympique Lyon forward rose highest to head home Salis Abdul Samed’s brilliant cross to draw Ghana level.

Thomas Partey should have grabbed the winning goal for Otto Addo’s side just before added time but the Arsenal midfielder’s effort from a one-on-one situation was saved by the Malian goalkeeper.

With just minutes away from full time, Ghana surged forward chasing their second goal of the game.

The ball fell to Jordan who fired past the Malian defence to snatch all three points for the Black Stars.

The win means Ghana now has six points from three games and find themselves behind Comoros, who lead due to goal superiority.

The Black Stars will face Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium on matchday four of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series.

Young Apostles FC secures historic promotion to Ghana Premier League

In a dramatic playoff match at Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, Young Apostles FC secured a place in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) by defeating Techiman Heroes FC on penalties (4-3).

Both teams had topped their respective groups in Zone 1 of Ghana’s second-tier league after the regular season, setting up a playoff to determine who would advance to the top division next season.

Young Apostles took the lead in the 8th minute, but Techiman Heroes equalized, leading the match to be decided by penalties.

With this victory, Young Apostles earned promotion to the Ghanaian top-flight, becoming the fifth team from the Bono Ahafo region to join the league, alongside Nsoatreman FC, Aduana Stars, Berekum Chelsea, and Bechem United.

This achievement is a significant milestone for Young Apostles, who will now compete with the top teams in Ghana’s premier division.

The 2024-25 GPL season will also include Vision FC from Zone 3 and Holy Stars FC from Zone 2, who have already secured their promotions.

Conversely, Bofoakwa Tano has been relegated from the Ghana Premier League following a poor season.

Young Apostles’ historic promotion reflects their hard work and dedication, and they aim to make a notable impact in the Ghana Premier League.

Samartex win maiden Ghana Premier League title

FC Samartex secured the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League title after defeating Bibiani GoldStars on Sunday, June 2, at the Nsenkyire Sports Complex.

The Timber giants achieved this milestone just a season after being promoted to Ghana’s top league.

Abdulai Nurudeen’s team clinched the league title with two games remaining, thanks to defeats suffered by Aduana and Medeama SC over the weekend.

Emmanuel Mamah scored the decisive goal just before halftime, giving his team a crucial lead that defined the match.

Heavy rain caused delays and made the pitch unplayable, but after extensive efforts and inspections, the game resumed, and the entire second half was played.

The Nsenkyire Stadium was filled with jubilant fans celebrating the historic victory.

Samartex’s triumph is notable in the Ghana Premier League, as no team has defended their title since Asante Kotoko in 2014.

They now join the elite group of Western Region clubs that have won the Ghana Premier League, alongside Sekondi Eleven Wise, Hasaacas, and Medeama SC, who won last season.

Throughout 32 matches, Samartex achieved 18 wins, four draws, and 10 losses, leading them to their success.

Vision FC secure historic promotion to Ghana Premier League

Vision FC has secured their first-ever promotion to Ghana’s top-flight league after a challenging victory over Uncle T FC on Sunday afternoon.

The ‘Ewo Keke’ team will compete in the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season, having clinched the Division One League Zone III title with a game to spare.

Needing a win to ensure their historic promotion, Vision FC triumphed with a 2-1 win over the Prampram-based club at the Nii Adjei Kraku Sports Complex.

Talented winger Gideon Offei Ofori scored the first goal with a powerful header in the 41st minute. The visitors equalized an hour into the match, temporarily putting Vision FC’s qualification in doubt.

The decisive moment came in the 83rd minute when substitute Frank Duku successfully converted a penalty, securing the win and confirming Vision FC’s promotion to the Ghana Premier League.

With one game left in the season, Vision FC leads with 55 points, followed by Hohoe United with 51 points after their 2-0 win over Susubribi United FC.

Coach Hamza Obeng’s team will finish their season with an away game against already-relegated Susubribi United FC in the Eastern Region next weekend.

GPL: Kotoko suffer home defeat, Lions beat Medeama, Nsoatreman held at home

Steven Mukwala, who was hailed as the hero for Asante Kotoko in the Super Clash last weekend after scoring a brace to beat Hearts of Oak 2-0, found himself in the villain’s role during their clash with Great Olympics on Sunday.

Great Olympics emerged victorious with a 1-0 win at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex, boosting their chances of escaping the relegation battle.

Due to the closure of the Baba Yara Stadium for the Black Stars’ 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Porcupine Warriors had to play at the alternate venue. However, facing a historic club like Great Olympics meant they did not have a full home advantage.

Oly Dade, precariously lying in the drop zone before the match, secured a vital victory to aid their fight for survival. Raymond Grippman stole the show with the only goal in the 43rd minute, punishing Kotoko for their wastefulness. Earlier in the game, Steven Mukwala missed a crucial opportunity to put Kotoko ahead by failing to convert a penalty in the 16th minute.

Despite the win, Great Olympics remain 16th on the league table but have an outstanding match that could prove pivotal in determining their fate in the top flight. With the win, they keep their hopes alive for staying in the league.

As for Kotoko, they sit 10th on the table with 43 points, and the defeat dashes their hopes of finishing in the top four.

In other matches, Berekum Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory over bottom-placed Real Tamale United, who must now win their remaining three games to ensure survival in the Ghana Premier League. Dreams FC beat Karela United 1-0, and

Accra Lions were held to a 1-1 draw against Nsoatreman. Medeama SC lost at home to Heart of Lions.

The next few matchdays will be critical for both the top and bottom of the table as teams fight to achieve their season goals, whether it’s securing the title, a top-four finish, or avoiding relegation.

Otto Addo promises Ghanaians of good football ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Mali & CAR

Ghana coach Otto Addo promises that the Black Stars will deliver high-quality football as they gear up for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic.

Addo has returned to lead the team after Chris Hughton’s departure, with the goal of securing Ghana’s spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, having previously succeeded in qualifying for the 2022 edition in Qatar.

At the announcement of a 26-man squad for the June matches, Addo expressed his excitement about rejoining the Ghana Football Association and taking on the role again.

“I’m really excited and happy to be back. It was not easy, but the GFA had good talks with Dortmund. I’m excited and looking forward to the next match,” he said.

He highlighted that his goal is to have the team play attractive football, though he acknowledged that victories cannot be guaranteed.

“I can’t promise victories, but I can promise you that we will play good football. I want to bring back the joy of watching us play. My players will not be afraid of the ball,” he explained

Ghana currently sits fourth in the qualifying group with three points. The team needs to win both upcoming matches: against Mali in Bamako on June 6 and against the Central African Republic in Kumasi on June 10.
