It’s a dying, not a dead Ghana Premier League (GPL) that’s seriously bleeding for deep thinking into its administration. The GPL needs that else it has no real future. And it’s better the bitter truth is accepted so an end is found to the institutionalised corruption in our league.  

Otherwise, we’ll continue to sink into nothingness when calls for the continent’s club competition are made. What’s sad, it doesn’t seem to me that, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has a voracious appetite to address the fundamental problems with discipline, management and organisation regarding the GPL.  

It’s why I weep for the GPL. I’ve no GPL investment aside my emotion which unlike financial investment, could easily be withdrawn anytime I so wish. This explains why club owners and administrators making various investments in the GPL ought to be deeply concerned about how the competition is managed. 

Anything is possible in the GPL. This creates integrity problems. If you’ve got money, time or valuable resources in the GPL, you’ve to rethink. There’s sanctioned corruption emanating from careless management of the competition, and because the FA, whose members are mostly in a conflict of interest position benefits from the embarrassing, substandard decisions of the GPL managers, no one wants the problems fixed. 

It’s why I weep for the GPL. If not, how does a player of a club, demoted as a result of match-fixing, ends up as goal king? In which league does this happen? Again, this is why I weep for the GPL, and I’ll cry out, because Ashantigold had no business being allowed to play to the end of the competition if the GPL has serious managers. 

We like cosmetic approaches to dealing with problems otherwise, it should’ve been known that, fairness and the competitiveness of the league were shot and fatally wounded when Ashgold were sent to Division Two for match-fixing yet permitted to compete in the GPL to the end. Which serious league is run like that? 

We wail over lack sponsorship but conveniently forget that corporate entities we seek financial and logistical support from, see the mismanagement of issues and events in the GPL and would thus drag their feet when it comes to sponsoring the competition for the simple reason that they handle their business well and wouldn’t want to associate with a competition whose integrity the people in it wouldn’t vouch for. 

This is why I weep for the GPL. How does anyone justify Ashantigold’s stay in the league till the end with Yaw Annor crowned as goal king? Wherein lies fairness? Where’s the genuineness of competition? This is why I weep for the GPL. 

We can remain deluded but there’s a competitions management problem. The GPL will continue to lose its attractiveness to the inherently corrupt management systems if those investing in the competition stay asleep. That’s if they don’t wake up to the façade and deal with the deluge of deceit brought upon themselves through incompetent, substandard management.

Real Tamale United were able to celebrate their Ghana Premier League survival after producing a stunning performance to defeat Hearts of Oak 4-1 in Accra on Sunday.

The Northern giants knew that a win would be enough to keep them from being relegated, and they delivered by far their best performance of the season to stun the Phobians at Accra Sports Stadium.

RTU got off to a shaky start, falling behind after nine minutes when Hearts of Oak’s Seidu Suraj put them ahead, but it took them ten minutes to respond, with Ronald Frimpong equalising in the 19th minute.

In the 30th minute, David Abagna converted from the penalty spot to give RTU the lead, and by halftime, they were up 3-1 thanks to Frimpong’s second.

They came back from the break to score the fourth goal, sealing a famous win and their safety. It is their first victory over Hearts of Oak since 2011.

Hearts finish the league season outside of the top four, but they have a trophy to fight for next week when they face Bechem United in the MTN FA Cup final.

Eleven Wonders did their job, defeating Aduana Stars at home, but since RTU won, the Techiman-based club have been relegated.

WAFA’s relegation was confirmed on Sunday with a 1-0 loss to Karela United, who finished the season in fourth place.

Wonders and WAFA join Elmina Sharks as the relegated teams this season.

With a final-day brace against Bibiani GoldStars, AshantiGold forward Yaw Annor snatched the golden boot from Asante Kotoko’s Mbella Etouga.

Annor scored his 21st and 22nd goals of the season in a 2-2 draw to surpass Etouga and tie Ishmael Addo’s record for most goals in a single season. Addo set the record in 2002 when he scored 22 goals for Hearts of Oak.

Bechem United and Berekum Chelsea played out a 1-1 draw, Dreams FC beat Medeama 2-0, Elmina Sharks fought back to draw 2-2 with Great Olympics and King Faisal beat Legon Cities 2-1 in Kumasi.

Netherlands international of Ghanaian descent Memphis Depay has tonight visited the Asante Kotoko team at the Tang Palace Hotel in Accra.

The footballer led by Asante Kotoko management member Dentaa Amoateng congratulated the Porcupines for their 2021-22 Premier League triumph.

The 28-year-old seemed very excited by the reception he got from the team and used the opportunity to advise the playing body and answered some questions from the media.

Depay was born to a Ghanaian father and a Dutch mother in the city of Moordrecht.

He’s currently in Ghana for holidays and will visit the life patron of Asante Kotoko, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Monday in Kumasi.

Asante Kotoko will wrap up their 2021-22 Ghana Premier League campaign with an away game against Accra Lions.

The Porcupines will clash with the debutants in a matchday 34 clash at the Accra Sports Stadium in a 3:00 PM kckoff time.

However, head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has named his men for the job this afternoon as he made no changes in the squad that defeated Elmina Sharks last weekend.

Kwame Baah has remained in the goal post for the third consecutive time, being supported in the defense by Christopher Nettey and Maxwell Agyemang.

Etouga who will be eyeing to break Ishmael Addo’s record in the league will lead the attack this afternoon with support from Fabio Gama and Samuel Boateng upfront.

Asante Kotoko coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum has endorsed his 21 man list for their final game of the season against Accra Lions on Saturday afternoon.

The Porcupines are champions of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League- winning for a record 25th time and received the trophy last Sunday in Kumasi after beating Elmina Sharks 3-0.

The club will officially bring to an end a sucessful 2021-22 season at the Accra Sports Stadium against Lions at 3:00 pm.

The team touched down in Accra on Wednesday to embark on a Thank You tour on their Sponsors. The team include unfit players such as captain Abdul Ganiyu, Mubarik Yusif, Amankona, Isaac Oppong.

Medeama SC defender Vincent Atingah has reacted to transfer reports linking him to Asante Kotoko SC.

The Porcupines according to media reports are in advanced talks with the former Hearts of Oak man to bolster their defense ahead of the CAF Champions League campaign.

The reports went on to state that the Reds are in advanced talks with his club for his services and a deal could be struck soon.

However, Atingah who joined Medeama before the start of the current season in an interview with Accra-based Original TV debunked the reports, stating that he still has a running contract with his club.

“I saw it on Social Media. I am a professional player and no one has approached me. I can’t tell now whether I will play in Africa or not”

“For now, I’ve not taken any decision on my future.

He was quizzed whether he’d fancy a move to the Porcupines, he said;

“Well, for that aspect when we get to the bridge we will cross it. For now, I don’t want any external issues. I want to finalize with Medeama before”

The highly-rated defender 2017 left Hearts of Oak to join Albanian giants KF Tirana.

After impressing in the league, he attracted interest from a host of clubs and subsequently joined Kuwait’s top-flight club Al Qadsia.

Vincent Atinga, 28, last played for Al-Shabab in Kuwait before returning to Ghana last year to join Medeama SC.

The former Hearts of Oak central defender is currently rated as one of the best-performing players in the Ghana Premier League.

Sammi Awuku, the NLA’s director general, has warned that if Hearts of Oak don’t place in the top three of the Ghana Premier League, the NLA may end its contract with them.

NLA struck a one million cedis cooperation arrangement with the club before the start of the 2021/22 football season.

Last season’s Phobians, who won the domestic triple, have struggled thus far this season.

Awuku congratulated Asante Kotoko on their Premier League victory at a ceremony conducted at the NLA offices following their visit.

“For every team, we decide to sponsor moving forward if you are not part of the top three at the end of the season, we will not consider you again.

“For the sake of keeping your association with us going strong, you must consistently rank in the top three or be accompanied by trophy winners,” he said.

NLA may not be able to sponsor every club again next season, but Kotoko have proven themselves worthy, and we will consider sponsoring them.” “he stated.

On Sunday, Hearts of Oak face RTU at the Accra Sports Stadium in their final match of the season, and they are set to miss out on a place in the top four.
