AS Roma youngster Felix Afena-Gyan donates to his SHS Coach

Felix Afena Ohene-Gyan has donated to his former coach at the Senior High School, Gyabaa Kofi.

Gyan, who has risen to stardom in the shortest possible time, gifted his SHS trainer ten quality footballs and some jerseys for his personal use and also to aid the training program of his former school, Berekum Presbyterian Senior High School.

The AS Roma youngster was spotted by Samuel Mintah, based in Sunyani, who is a scout for famed FIFA licensed agent Oliver Arthur, while representing his school at the Bono Ahafo Regional Inter-schools football competition under the tutelage of Gyabaa Kofi in 2019. 

Gyan wins Most promising player award

Afena-Gyan was quickly signed to Oliver Arthur’s Eurafrica FC where he stayed with the juvenile team for about three months before travelling to Italy in January 2021.

He had trials with AS Roma and was scheduled to have trials with other Italian powerhouses like AC Milan and Inter Milan, but the capital club were impressed and gave Afena-Gyan a contract right away. He then joined their junior team, Primavera.

He was selected to start as the Black Stars’ attacking line against Nigeria in the 2022 Fifa World Cup Playoff first leg in Kumasi leg.

Kotoko coach Ogum eulogizes Hearts of Oak trio

Asante Kotoko head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has praised Hearts of Oak trio after the just ended season.

Ogum in an interview with ATL Radio in Cape Coast was asked about the players who impressed him so much in the 2021-22 football season.

The Kotoko gaffer who was named coach of the year in yesterday’s Ghana Football Awards was quick to mention Hearts of Oak’s deputy captain Mohammed Alhassan, youngster Suraj Seidu and Daniel Afriyie Barnieh.

“Mohammed Alhassan is a super player, outstanding and Suraj Seidu, very good player, fantastic on and off the pitch, super player and Afriyie Barnieh, I don’t need to talk much about him because we all know his capablities,” he said.

2023 CHAN Q: Hearts of Oak keeper Richard Attah, Dreams FC duo dropped from Black Galaxies squad ahead of Benin clash

Hearts of Oak goalkeeper, Richard Attah has been dropped from Black Galaxies squad for the upcoming CHAN qualifier against Benin.

Attah was among 35 players who were called to camp ahead of the game by head coach Annor Walker.

Annor Walker will settle on Asante Kotoko goalie Ibrahim Danlad, Bechem United’s Abdulai Iddrisu and Great Olympics’ Stephen Kwaku as goalkeepers for the qualifier.

Other players who have been dropped are Dreams FC duo Maxwell Arthur and Abdalah Ibrahim. Walker is expected to drop more players in the coming days.

However, Hearts of Oak midfielder Gladson Awako has earned a late-call up to join the team and has made the final squad.

The Black Galaxies will play Benin in the preliminary stage of the qualifiers in search of a ticket to the biennial competition scheduled for Algeria in January 2023.

Ghana have failed to qualify for the tournament in the last three editions and will hope to make another appearance this time around. The Black Stars ‘B’ finished 2nd in 2009 and in 2014.

Ghana FA to start five aside football competition next season

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is delighted to announce that beginning next season, five aside football will commence in full force.

A pilot program will be held in Accra and likely extended to the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi before going nationwide.

Regulations for the season will soon be available for stakeholders. The GFA is committed to the development of all competitions under its umbrella including five aside football.

Ivorian referee Frederic Francois to officiate Ghana’s CHAN qualifier against Benin

Kouassi Frederic Francois Biro from Côte D’Ivoire has been appointed by the Confederation of African Football as the Centre referee for the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) Algeria 2022 first round qualifier between Ghana and Benin.

The 37- year old will be assisted by compatriots Ashumu Hermann Arthur Melaine Aguie (Assistant I), Kalilou Bamba (Assistant II) and Patrick Tanguy Jean Philippe Vlei (Fourth Referee) while Joseph Zangreyanogho from Burkina Faso works as Match Commissioner. Ghana’s Christiana Baah has been handed the role of a COVID-19 officer for the match.

The match between the Black Galaxies and Benin will take place at the Cape Coast stadium on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at 16H00 with the 2nd leg set for Cotonou on Saturday, July 30, 2022.

The winner of the two legs will play Nigeria in the final round of qualifiers for a ticket to the tournament in Algeria.

Hearts star Afriyie Barnieh reveals toughest defender he played against in 2021/22 GPL season

Daniel Afriyie Barnieh’s toughest defender to play against in the 2022/23 football season is Medeama centre-back Vincent Atinga.

The Phobian star had a fruitful campaign, leading his side to the MTN FA Cup title by netting the winner in the final.

Hearts beat Bechem United 2-1 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on June 26.

But interestingly, Afriyie Barnieh’s toughest defender he faced was not in the FA Cup, it was against Medeama’s Vincent Atingah who he faced twice in the Ghana Premier League.

“He’s an experienced defender and he has played in foreign leagues and met good players.

“Atinga plays with a lot of calmness and he seemed to know all our key moves and mine as well,” he told Asempa FM.

“Whenever I play against him, we both struggle and that’s because he’s experienced and understands the local game too.”

Vincent Atinga was at Hearts of Oak under Scottish coach Frank Nuttal in a team that built one of the best attacks in recent years.

With Winful Cobbinah, Thomas Abbey, Kwame Kizito and Patrick Razak, the Phobians reached the MTN FA Cup finals for the first time after 17 years.

But the Phobians were slaughtered by rivals Asante Kotoko in Tamale 3-1 after three first half goals from Saddick Adams.

Thomas Abbey got the consolation for Hearts.

CAF moves 2023 Africa Cup of Nations to 2024

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations will take place in2024, as approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

This was revealed by CAF President Patrice Motsepe at a media briefing in Morocco following the Executive Committee meeting.

The tournament was initially scheduled to take place in June-July 2023, during the height of the rainy season in Ivory Coast.

“We cannot take the risk,” the South African said in the Moroccan capital Rabat.

This means the tournament’s continent’s flagship competition will be held in January and February for the second year in a row after 2021 edition took place in Cameroon earlier this year.


Caf announced in 2017 that the finals would be moved from their traditional January-February slot to June-July to avoid repeated disputes with European clubs forced to release players in the middle of the season.

“January is not the ideal time because of the European clubs, but it is the only choice we have,” Motsepe added.

Meet Herbert Adika – The man who discovered Ghana legend Abedi Pele in 1975

Former Black Stars skipper and African football great, Abedi Ayew Pele, would not have been who he became but for one man.

The man is Herbert Adika.

He was the man who spotted and nurtured Pele’s talent at the juvinille level decades ago.


Abedi played for Mr Adika’s side, Great Falcos as an up and coming player and showed glimpses of what he was made up of when he won the 1978 SWAG Colts Player of the Year.

He went on to become an oustanding player, rising through the ranks with his club football and eventually traveling out of the country and living his mark on the senior national team, the Black Stars.

In a 2010 interview on state broadcaster GBC, whiles Abedi Pele was narrating his journey through the sport, he was asked, “do you remember a name called Herbert Adika?”

His response was: “Yes, of course, we call him chief but if I am sitting here today, he made me who I am.”

Mr. Adika who suffers from visual impairment responded “it is also a privilege for me to see (meet) him too,” when he was ushered into the studio to meet Abedi.


Well, I wouldn’t say I saw him personally but it was through one of our colleague who lived at Dong and they had a rice mill there, so he introduced him to me that he has seen some devilish player at Dong and he will like him to play for Great Falcos.

So we invited him, the first question we put to Abedi Pele was, ‘we have a very strong and dangerous defender here and if you are able to beat him, you will be a good player.

And he proved himself and we saw that this is not a player we will play with. So we quickly signed him on (no payment at the time) we attracted him into your fold and we started.

“He never missed training,” he said of Abedi’s tenacity as he commuted between Dome and Avenor to train. “Whenever he was late (misses the train) he has to sleep at New Town,” he recounted.

Pele played for Great Falcos for about four years and was doing wonders, he said, adding that he excelled in every match and he was generously compensated by the fans financially.


He said he took interest in Pele and would go watch him playing, “and I wasn’t surprised when in 1978, he was voted the Colts Player of the Year, in that ceremonial match, it was so wonderful. I can remember as if it was yesterday,” he stressed.

Mr. Adika was awarded at the 4th Ghana Football Awards event that took place on July 2, 2022 in Accra.

Asante Kotoko pick five top awards at 2022 Ghana Football Awards

The fourth edition of the Ghana Football Awards was successfully held at the Grand Arena, Accra International Conference Center (AICC) on Saturday 2rd July, 2022.

Ghanaian giants and current league champions, Asante Kotoko picked three top awards at the colourful ceremony which was graced by some high profile dignitaries like Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, Fred Pappoe, John Paintsil, Asamoah Gyan, Tony Baffoe, Nii Odartey Lamptey and others.

Asante Kotoko were named the best male club of the year at the award ceremony held in Accra.

The Porcupines scooped the prestigious award from Samartex and Bechem United.

The trainer of the side, Prosper Narteh Ogum was also adjudged as the best Male Coach of the year ahead of Bechem United coach Kasim Mingle and Samartex coach, Henry Wellington.

Porcupine Tertiary also won the supporters group of the year award.

Nana Yaw Amponsah for the second time running also won the CEO of the year award.

Asante Kotoko also beat Hearts of Oak, Bechem United, Dreams FC, Cheetah FC and Legon Cities to win the Most vibrant club on social media.
