Several reports emerged on Friday that the former Arsenal marksman had been slapped with a visa refusal, and the world governing body has issued a statement confirming that Partey will be unable to travel from Ghana’s base in Boston, USA, to Canada.

“FIFA can confirm that player Thomas Partey will be unable to travel from Ghana’s Team Base Camp in Boston, USA, to Canada for their first match against Panama on Wednesday, 17 June, as his visa application has been refused by the Canadian government.

“For any further questions, please contact the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) at [email protected].”

However, Partey will be available for selection in Ghana’s other Group L fixtures against England in Boston and Croatia in Philadelphia, as both matches are scheduled to take place in the United States.

Partey is currently facing criminal proceedings in the United Kingdom after he was charged with multiple counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. He has since denied all the charges through his legal team, and the case remains before the courts.

He is expected to play against England in Boston on June 23 and Croatia in Philadelphia on June 27, 2026.

Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz names 28-man squad for World Cup preparation camp

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has named a 28-man squad for the World Cup preparation camp and the international friendly against Wales in Cardiff. The team comprises five goalkeepers, nine defenders, seven midfielders, and seven forwards.

The team opened camp on Monday, May 25, 2026, and trained at the Dragon Park in Cardiff ahead of the friendly against Wales on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

Greece-based defender Baba Abdul Rahman returns to the team for the first time since September 2023, following consistent performances for PAOK. The former Chelsea left back has made 35 appearances this season, scoring three goals and providing three assists across all competitions.

Also returning is Olympique Lyon winger Ernest Nuamah, who has been absent for close to a year. He is back to full fitness after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury that sidelined him for more than 12 months.

Other notable returnees include Rayo Vallecano’s Abdul Mumin, who is back from a long layoff due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury; Saint-Étienne midfielder Augustine Boakye; and Stade Rennes defender Alidu Seidu.

Ajax Amsterdam youngster Paul Reverson has also been included. The 20-year-old has been called up for further assessment with a long-term view, having impressed for Ajax’s youth side in the Netherlands.

The squad will assemble in Cardiff on Monday, May 25, 2026, in preparation for the international friendly against Wales and the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Ghana will face Panama in the opening Group L match in Toronto before taking on England and Croatia in Boston and Philadelphia, respectively.

Ghana go down to Mexico in pre-World Cup friendly

Ghana lost 2-0 to Mexico in an international friendly in Puebla on Friday, conceding in either half as both nations continued preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June.

The match gave Desmond Ofei a closer look at his squad and provided new players a platform to stake a claim just days before Ghana’s final World Cup squad is announced.

Benjamin Asare kept his place in goal, marshalled by a back four of Jan Kwasi Gyamerah, Nathaniel Adjei, Oscar Oppong and Terry Yegbe. Emmanuel Agyei, captain Majeed Ashimeru, Ibrahim Osman and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi started in midfield, with Daniel Agyei and Felix Afena-Gyan leading the line in a 4-4-2 formation.

The hosts took an early lead through Brian Gutiérrez inside two minutes. Ghana recovered with a composed response, but Mexico looked comfortable on the ball and headed into the break 1-0 up after an impressive first-half display.

Guillermo Martínez doubled Mexico’s advantage in the 54th minute. Ofei responded with multiple second-half substitutions, but they were not enough to change the game.

Prince Amoako, Jerry Afriyie and Razak Simpson came on for Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, Daniel Agyei and Felix Afena-Gyan in the 66th minute. Majeed Ashimeru, Ibrahim Osman, Emmanuel Agyei and Benjamin Asare later made way for Abdul Aziz Issah, Joseph Opoku, Salim Adams and Solomon Agbasi.

The changes gave Ghana renewed impetus in the closing stages, but Mexico held on for the win.

The match served as a valuable test for Ghana ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

The team will now shift focus to the friendly against Wales in Cardiff on June 2, 2026.
