CK Akonnor reveals how he ditched Hearts of Oak to support Asante Kotoko

Former Ghana coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor has disclosed that his experience during his time as coach of Asante Kotoko was key as he switched to love the Porcupine Warriors despite being Hearts of Oak fan.

Akonnor was appointed as the head coach of Kotoko, replacing Paa Kwesi Fabin in 2018 on a two-year deal.

He served for nine months, helping them to win the 2019 GFA Normalisation Committee Special Competition and qualify for the 2019/20 CAF Champions League. In July 2019, he was sacked by Kotoko and replaced by Kjetil Zachariassen.

“To be honest with you I was Hearts of Oak supporter but I began to love Kotoko because of what I experienced when I went there. My house, my family were all Hearts supporters. My father is Hearts of Oak man,” he told Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana

“I was seen in more professional way. If am with Kotoko I want to beat Hearts and if am with Hearts I want to beat Kotoko. No doubt about it.”

Akonnor added, “So when you went to Hearts of Oak did you feel like you have come home? “I felt like I was working and I had to be professional, give all my best for the team. I don’t look at it on that fan perspective but as a job that has been given they pay me so I have to give my best to the club.”

2022/23 MTN FA Cup set to begin in November

The 2022/23 MTN FA Cup competition is set to kick off on Tuesday, November 1.

In all, a total of 111 clubs have subscribed to participate in this edition – with 45 drawn from playoffs held in 10 regions, 48 clubs in Division One (DOL) and 18 Premier League clubs.

The competition gets underway with the preliminary round involving the qualified teams from the various regions and the DOL sides

A live draw for the prelims has been scheduled for the Conference room of the GFA Secretariat in Accra on Tuesday, October 18.

This round will be played over a 10-day period – November 1-10 – with winners from the one-off encounters advancing to the Round of 64 in December which will see the Premier clubs joining the fray.

The FA Cup competition will then continue with the Round of 32 and 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and the grand finale on June 17, 2023.

Below is the calendar for the 2022/23 MTN FA Cup match days:

• Preliminary Round – November 1-10, 2022

• Round of 64 – December 20-29, 2022

• Round of 32 – January 20-23, 2023

• Round of 16 – February 24-27, 2023

• Quarterfinals – April 7-10, 2023

• Semifinals – May 13-14, 2023

• Final – June 17, 2023

Ex-Kotoko midfielder Umar Basiru joins Ethiopian Insurance FC

After rebuffing overtures from Ghana’s topmost clubs in the summer, free-agent Umar Basiru has signed for East African side Ethiopian Insurance FC. 

The move effectively rules the exciting lanky midfielder out of the reckoning for a place in Ghana’s final squad for the upcoming 2022 Championship of African Nations (CHAN)  tournament in Algeria early next year.

The January 13 to February 4, 2023 competition is – per design – reserved for players plying their trades in their home countries.

Umar played a key role in the Black Galaxies’ qualification for the first time since 2014 – after missing the last three editions.

But signing a one-year deal with the Ethiopian Premier League outfit on Thursday, October 13 means the 25-year-old cannot represent Ghana at CHAN 2022 unless there is a rule change by the Confederation of African Football (Caf) before the 18-team competition kicks off.

Umar – after scoring 13 goals in 33 appearances for Karela United in the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League – was courted by Asante Kotoko who wanted him for a second spell as well as rivals Hearts of Oak. But he turned both clubs down holding out for a move abroad.

Black Galaxies path

Ghana and holders Morocco will face off at the Algeria 2022 Championship of African Nations (CHAN) after being grouped together along with Sudan and Madagascar.

Coach Annor Walker’s charges find themselves in a tough Group C with Madagascar whom they kick-start their campaign against Madagascar on Sunday, January 15 before taking on Sudan in their second game four days later.

Ghana also face Morocco – winners of the last two editions – in their final group match on Monday, January 23.

Assistant and interim head coach of Accra Hearts of Oak, David Ocloo, is full of confidence ahead of the Phobian’s game against Real Bamako in the 2022/2023 CAF Confederation Cup.

Accra Hearts of Oak are hoping to overturn a 3-0 deficit against Real Bamako in the preliminary CAF Confederation Cup, but the Malians are also keen on qualifying after a huge victory in the first leg.

While many Phobians have already given up ahead of the return league, interim coach David Ocloo has stated that they will overturn the scoreline and qualify for the next phase of the competition.

“This is a no-match. I can confidently say we can turn this around. We played well. We created a lot of chances but no clinical. We are going to right the wrongs. They are beatable,” myjoyonline.com quoted David Ocloo.

Isaac Mensah scores twice as Hearts Of Oak beat GAP Academy 6-0 in a friendly

Hearts of Oak have thrashed lower tier side Gap Soccer Academy 6-0 in a friendly ahead of their second leg of their Confederation Cup tie against AS Bamako.

The Phobians are faced with the task of overturning a 3-0 first-leg defeat and therefore intensified their preparations with a friendly encounter ahead of the game on Sunday afternoon in Accra.

Acting head coach David Ocloo started Richmond Ayi in the posts. At the back were Samuel Inkoom, Dennis Korsah, Mohammed Alhassan, and Robert Addo Sowah.

In midfield, Gladson Awako, Gideon Asante, and Seidu Suraj started with Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, Salifu Ibrahim, and 
Isaac Mensah playing in attack.

A brace through Isaac Mensah and a goal each by Samuel Inkoom, Afriyie Barnieh, Gideon Asante and Fatawu Mohammed saw Hearts secure the impressive victory.

Following the suspension of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League due to a court injunction, Asante Kotoko engaged Techiman Liberty in a friendly game on Wednesday morning.

The Porcupine Warriors hit five past the Division Two League side at the Adako Jachie Sports Complex.

Coach Seydou Zerbo commenced the game with Frederick Asare in posts. The back line included Agyapong, Tedeku, Sherif, and Appau

In midfield, Boadu alongside Morrison, Zeze with Oppong, Amankona, and Mukwala leading the attack.

Zeze opened the scoring before Mukwala added the second for his fourth goal in three friendly games. Liberty pulled one back before Isaac Oppong netted Kotoko’s third before the break.

After recess, Kotoko introduced a different set of players including Justice Blay, Afoakwa, Sarkodie, Asmah, Dwamena etc.

The Reds continued from where they left off in the first half as Rocky Dwamena and Patrick Asmah scored two additional goals to make it 5-1.

Kotoko will continue with their preparation as they wait for the resumption of the league.

Fred Pappoe has stated that Hearts of Oak will find it difficult to put four goals into the net against ASR Bamako.

Pappoe explaining his statement said that it will be a tall order despite wishing the Phobians to scale past the Malian giants on Sunday.

The Phobians lost 3-0 in the first leg in Bamako last Sunday and will hope to overturn to scoreline in Accra on Sunday.

“Hearts have a lot of things to do if they really want to overturn the score line and qualify to the next stage”

“It’s really going to be a tough one, It is my wish that they qualify but let me be emphatic here that it is a very tall order and demands alot of hard work”

“I don’t even know if they are making a decision to appoint a substantive coach in a short time or as a club if they have sat down to conduct proper investigation into the reasons why they lost embarrassingly in Mali.”
