Afcon 2025 qualifiers: Alexander Djiku ruled out Ghana’s games against Angola and Niger

Defender Alexander Djiku has been sidelined from Ghana’s upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers against Angola and Niger after sustaining an injury.

The 30-year-old Fenerbahce centre-back limped off during Friday night’s Turkish Super Lig match against Alanyaspor, picking up a thigh injury in the 61st minute.

Initial scans revealed a Grade One strain in the quadriceps of his right thigh, which will require 10 to 14 days of recovery, ruling him out of the qualifiers.

Djiku, who made his Ghana debut in October 2020 and has since earned 31 caps for the Black Stars, was named in Otto Addo’s 23-man squad for the crucial matches.

His absence brings the number of injury casualties in the squad to seven.

Before Thursday’s announcement, six other players were already ruled out due to various injuries: Patric Pfeiffer (hamstring), Abdul Samed Salis (muscle injury), Gideon Mensah (muscle tear), Ernest Nuamah (inflammation), Kamaldeen Sulemana (ankle injury), and Ibrahim Sulemana (twisted ankle).

Felix Afena-Gyan joins Juventus Next Gen on loan

Ghanaian striker Felix Afena-Gyan has secured a season-long loan move to Juventus Next Gen from Serie B side Cremonese.

The young attacker made the switch on transfer deadline day to Juventus Next Gen, the reserve team for Serie A giants Juventus, and will compete in the Serie C Group C.

Afena-Gyan first made headlines at AS Roma, where his impressive tally of six goals in five Primavera (U-19) matches caught the attention of then-manager José Mourinho.

He made his Serie A debut in October 2021 against Cagliari and further cemented his potential by scoring twice against Genoa.

His performances earned him a contract extension with Roma until 2026.

However, after transferring to Cremonese in August 2022, Afena-Gyan struggled to find consistent playing time, recording three goals and one assist in 36 appearances.

The loan to Juventus Next Gen, while a step down, offers Afena-Gyan the chance to regain his form and visibility, potentially marking the next chapter in his promising career.

As a Ghanaian international, Afena-Gyan will hope that this move helps him re-establish his place on the international stage, while also contributing to Juventus Next Gen’s ambitions in Serie C.

French club RC Lens has announced the loan transfer of Ghana international Salis Abdul Samed to AFC Sunderland in the English Championship until the end of the 2024/25 season.

The deal was finalized on transfer deadline day.

Abdul Samed, who played 39 matches across all competitions last season, including appearances in the Champions League and Europa League, had attracted interest from several French clubs, including FC Nantes, Stade Brestois, and AS Saint-Étienne. New Lens manager Will Still had placed Abdul Samed on the transfer list, prompting speculation about his future throughout the summer.

Despite multiple inquiries from Ligue 1 clubs, the 24-year-old chose to make the switch to Sunderland.

The loan agreement with Sunderland does not include an option for a permanent transfer, meaning Abdul Samed is expected to return to Lens at the end of the season.

Due to injury, Abdul Samed will not be available for Ghana during the upcoming international break. Black Stars coach Otto, on Thursday, confirmed his absence for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers against Angola and Niger.
